Hi Everyone,

I am looking forward to Halloween. I love decorating. Where do I decorate?

1. Fireplace mantle
2. Front door
3. Dining room
4. Living room – just a pumpkin here or there
5. The front yard – hard cardboard tombstones placed so I can hide scavenger hunt bags behind them

My 2nd dragon book is now slated for publication in 2026, which allows me more time to make it fantastic.

It is the continuing story of eighteen-year-old Lady Fallon, those close to her, her true love, and especially her number one bodyguard, Trulo. Great things can come from small packages! Remember that.

Something you don’t know about me!

I used to write movie reviews!

Recently, I saw “Bullet Train”. It was made in 2022 and starred Brad Pitt. It is considered a comedy action film. There is a lot of violence. Brad Pitt plays an assassin who has been trying to mellow out. He’s been called to work again to cover for an assassin who called in sick.

I love the intertwining action with several character storylines.

From a writer’s point of view, the script is a masterpiece of storylines, character arcs, evolving plots, and action with unexpected twists and moments of bizarre comedic events and pauses for wisdom. I love the perfection of its design.

It is rated R for violence, language, sexuality, etc. Not all great scripts have this rating.

Now I’m off to find some Halloween movies that are written for families.

Opinion: Saturday Sundries By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

Some of the trees are starting to change, but it’s not enough yet. Even though the foliage is not quite there, people have already started celebrating Halloween. Above is a book card for my YA and young-at-heart paranormal romance fantasy novels.

A note on AIs: I don’t use them to write my book. I use the free version of Grammarly to correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling, which is not considered by the publishing powers that be as an AI writing the book. I also look things up in The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation by Lester Kaufman and Jane Straus. I have the print edition, and I keep it handy when I write. It’s always best to double-check and not rely solely on one program.

I use Canva Pro for creating book cards for my novels. I don’t use their AI. I have been an artist since I was seven and a writer since I was eight. I enjoy putting things together myself and making my book cards unique. I am making some ebook covers with it.

I have been working with Atticus, which is not an AI. I type inside of Atticus and will use their formatting program to format my upcoming books.

You may ask me why I don’t use AI for writing.

1. I wish to continue being an authentic author. When you read my books, you will know that a human being wrote them.

2. I was asked to test one of the AIs by one of my writing organizations. I put in the first paragraph of a famous book, which is in the public domain. The AI rendition lacked the mystery of what was really going on, the setting was flat and lost its meaning, and it removed the author’s voice (the unique way each individual expresses themself). The AI deleted all those things that made the book famous. It erased repeated and partially repeated sentences, which were necessary clues. Note: If an author repeats something, it often means something.

3. An AI is only as good as its human programmer. So if you are trusting an AI not to make mistakes, please, don’t.

4. An AI does not know inference or building tension. It has no idea of subtleties. No one can program the vital processes of humanity into an AI to replicate what a human life feels like. It is not human. I could go on, but that is for another time.

I am still working on my editor’s notes for the upcoming dragon book. Life will give you setbacks. Don’t worry about that. Just get back on track as quickly as you can.

It is only September 2nd, and already I’ve learned a lot. I was in a costume shop yesterday, as I always dress up for Halloween. No, I didn’t choose the plague doctor. but there were a lot to choose from.

I also got up to speed on the celestial events for this month.

I found this in social media, but I don’t know who to attribute this to.

The Blood Moon is really a total lunar eclipse. The moon turns red as it enters shadow.

Sadly, the September 21st Solar Eclipse will only be visible from New Zealand and parts of Antarctica. If you happen to be going to New Zealand for that event, be sure to bring your certified solar glasses.

What is a Fall Equinox? In Latin, equinox means equal night. On that date, the day and night are of the same length. on that day! It is the official beginning of Fall, and sunset will arrive earlier each day afterward

Opinion: More Sundries & Such By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

Autumn will be here before we know it. Stores already have their Autumn and Halloween decor on the shelves. I find the coming season comforting with the harvest festivals, Halloween, many family birthdays and parties, and the changing colors of tree foliage. I enjoy the holiday celebrations, outside decorations, sweaters, boots, a variety of candy, pies, and costumes.

Of late, it feels like a whirlwind of change is happening.

Dear friends and family have departed for eternal life. Adored creatures have left, too. The air outside has the scent of change. The smell of pine trees, ocean spray, and a storm just on the edge. The air feels electrified. Time to go inside, of course.

We are still in hurricane season on the US East Coast, so watch the weather forecasts and the skies. Our skies are tricky. One moment the sky is blue and sunny, and the next it’s threatening with black and gray clouds. Thunder tells the story.

When I was a kid, lightning struck my house. Different outlets got singed and were unusable. The radio was on in the kitchen. Sparks flew out of it. I ran around the house and pulled out all the plugs on everything else. Fortunately, no one in the family was hurt. The damage was minimal and easily replaced. After that, my dad had the house grounded. Apparently, it wasn’t.

When I became an adult and had my first house, I made sure it was grounded.

I think being grounded is a good idea for everyone. With all the fast changes in our lives right now, find where or with whom you feel grounded. Let’s all have less stress in our lives. Avoid getting singed when you can.

Right now, on my desk, I have the editor’s notes for the 2nd dragon book and am working through them. My dreams have dragons flying. I’m also writing down the dreams that tell the next vampire book in the Arnhem Knights of New York series.

Remember! Cherish your life and those you love. Tonight is the Black Moon (a new moon). It will be black, so you won’t see it. Giggles. Enjoy the sweetness in life that the seasons bring us.

Opinion: In the Blink of an Eye By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

Life can change in the blink of an eye. As a person dies, another is born. Still, if you love the one leaving, it hurts. Even if you completely believe in an afterlife, it hurts. Why? Because they are not physically with you.

What do you do? Cherish them while you have them. Make your days bright by sharing time with family, friends, and pets. I have discovered (as others have too) that as you age, you know more things. One of those things is that life moves fast.

There are so many things in the world that distract us. Worrying about money, illness, and even the weather, drags our attention away from those we love.

Our busy corporate world has us believing that we live for our jobs, and our jobs should be the focus of our lives. If you have a job that makes you very happy, then you are one of the few, and that’s great. If you don’t, consider another line of work.

Truly, we live for the people and pets we love. Time is precious. You have an important life beyond the workplace.

Yesterday, I went to my grandson’s 7th birthday party. It was fun. The presents were mostly Spider-Man and Mario Bros. clothing and toys. I treat any event with my husband, children, and grandchildren as sacred.

I am still working on the edits of my 2nd Dragon book. If you haven’t read the first book, Lady Fallon’s Dragons, you will want to before the 2nd one comes out. If you love, love, love dragons, this is the book you’ll want in your collection. I am trying not to give the story away.

Opinion: Sundries & Such By Susan Hanniford Crowley

The Pumpkin Whisperer

Hi Everyone,

As you can see, there are many matters on my mind. After a scorching summer, I am happy to greet Autumn. The photo is of one of my granddaughters when she was very small. Do you remember the sheer delight of choosing a pumpkin when you were a little kid? I am already thinking of decorating for Halloween.

I am still working on the edits of my 2nd Dragon book. These things take time.

An important note to everyone: If you’re in a heat wave zone, take care with breathing and get shelter with a good fan or A/C. I know that there are also wildfires in many places with air quality warnings. Be safe and stay on top of the news.

I was reading that many celebrities this past week have announced their struggles with Lyme Disease. I was happy for their spreading Lyme Tick awareness. I’ve had Lyme Disease now for over 30 years. I find the exhaustion and pain increases, when we have a heat wave.

It’s important to keep up one’s spirits when life gives you pain and/or heat waves. To that end, I went out with one of my daughters and got the Wednesday meal from Wendy’s. Delicious! We are topping off the day by watching Season 2 of Wednesday.

So protect yourself from the ills of the world, relax into a fun movie, series, or read a book. If you feel the need for some autumn decor, go for it.

Opinion: The Season of Fairs By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

In the world I live in, there are country fairs all summer. You don’t have to go to them all, but it is a healthy exercise to attend a couple if you wish. Whenever, there is a lot of walking involved, always check with your physician.

A couple of notes about attending large outdoor events. If you have a gut feeling not to go, don’t. If the heat index is too high for you, don’t go. Do what you feel comfortable doing.

Every year, I look forward to a small nearby fair. There are particular booths I always visit to buy small items for myself or family members. I love going with my grandchildren. Here are some fun things we do together.

1. Get hot dogs and bottles of cold water.
2. Visit the booths of gift shops to buy beaded necklaces, whirly gigs, and cheap marionettes.
3. See the animals in the huge barn, see who won ribbons, and talk with the farmers
4. Visit the farm machine exhibits.
5. Sit and listen to the music acts on stage or the pageant
6. Play in the arcade. Try to win something.
7. Go on the rides.
8. Watch the fireworks.

Tips on having fun at a fair:
1. Wear walking shoes
2. Pace yourself.
3. Know where the restrooms are.
4. Keep your water bottle filled and drink when you need to.
5. Find shade to rest in.
6. Know when it’s time for you to go home. Set a time frame of how long you will be there.
7. Set a time and meeting place if you’re with family or friends.
8. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen!

I’ve reached the age where all these things are important. I love being with family and running into friends. But I also enjoy living life. When I reach the point where I am getting too tired or the heat is too much, I say my goodbyes. Even if you are leaving sooner than expected, respect the signals your body sends you.

At the small fair I love attending, there is a special spot for the fire department. The kids love it because they get to see a fire engine up close. The department also has its ambulance parked there and has set out lawn reclining chairs. They are for anyone who isn’t feeling quite right. I sat there once. I was feeling dizzy. An EMT rushed over to me with cold water and asked if I needed medical assistance. My husband found me, and we thanked them and said we were going home, which we did. If the fair you’re attending has this special spot, and you suddenly have a medical problem, go there.

The idea in life is to have fun, but not to burn yourself down or out. This is all just my opinion, of course.

Opinion: The Tranquil Heart By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

With the rapid changes to our world on so many levels, taking care of yourself is a priority. There are many ways to do that.

Go to your favorite calming place and sit for a while. (Example: a favorite view of nature)Do a calming activity. (Examples: knitting, crocheting, writing, painting, drawing)Redirect your attention by watching a favorite movie or reading a book.If you have children and/or pets, play with them. Play is very calming even though as adults we appear to forget that. Get out of your home and get your body moving. Walk, run, swim, or dance. Always confer with your doctor about the exercise program you choose.Listen to music you love. Go out with friends who also enjoy calming hobbies or events.

These are only some samples of calming activities.

The idea is to avoid, even for a little while, things that upset you. My doctor suggested I stop watching the news and violent movies. Being away from the troubles of the world makes me feel better and restores my tranquility.

Remember, take care of yourself.

More Things I Noticed in a Zone of Calm By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,

That is a cat toy in one of my shoes. I asked my kitten to bring it closer to me. We were playing an exciting game of fetch when she decided that bringing it closer meant putting it in my shoe. She’s napping now. I wore her out.

In a world of seemingly unending sadness, I collect bright spots. I have an account on Substack @ladyknightridesagain. The name is Susan Hanniford Crowley. The platform is sort of like Twitter. I have found that what I prefer doing there is to send the uplifting, inspiring, or interesting posts further by restacking. I have no interest in saying anything there myself. I don’t plan on posting about my books. (Not yet anyway.) I wanted to get the lay of the land.

I don’t restack (repost) political things or injustice things. If they are on my home page, I didn’t put them there. Enough people are doing that.

Besides, I want to restack lovely things, posts of courage, and gentle times and people. To see the things I have chosen there, click on my profile. I restacked from a gentleman in Ukraine, who says he is still there. I love his courage and hope! I reposted a video of a little girl singing to her cow. They are so sweet together. There was a funny video of a seagull stepping on a mat, getting into a store, and coming out with a bag of chips. He ripped it open and ate.

It leads me to my question: Are animals getting smarter? Let’s ponder that for a while.

I am working on my editor’s edits of my next dragon book. Okay, I will when I’m done with this post.
