41st Anniversary Paranormal-Scope
[image error]
Forty-one years ago, I loved a man so much that I married him. Not only was he my true love, but he was also my best friend. My dad was opening the door in the photo. Sadly, my dad passed away in 2017, but we are here, so are our children and grandchildren.
On the paranormal-scope today, we will look at the animals that mate for life. There must be some magic there.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
A howl at night is a form of communication. It means “let’s party” with friends. Wolves enjoy these parties as they look for someone to warm their heart for a lifetime. You’ve been invited.
Taurus:
Beavers are wild about decorating their abode and enjoy the fun of little beavers. It’s time to decorate your place for spring.
Gemini:
Coyotes are all about the group and a good sheep dinner. Go out to dinner with family and/or friends and enjoy the people who love you.
Cancer:
Swans glide in for a landing and enjoy the sweetness of the lake and the softness of the morning sun. They enjoy what they have. What are you grateful for?
Leo:
Barn Owls hoot at each for a while before making a commitment. Give yourself time to get to know people.
Virgo:
Sandhill cranes love to dance. It’s fun and good exercise. You might make a new friend this way. Consider dancing lessons.
Libra:
Gibbons love to sing to the one they love. Check out your music collection and add something that makes you feel happy.
Scorpio:
Macaroni penguins are very loyal and dependable. Don’t listen to the gossip at work. Stay loyal and dependable.
Sagittarius:
Bald eagles are all about the home and family. Plan a family and/or friend vacation.
Capricorn:
Seahorses love to dance and that is how they meet their mates. Except the next party invitation and dance. Socializing keeps us vital and alive.
Aquarius:
Halloween just became more fun. The Black Vulture mates for life and take turns watching the kids. Working as a team will get you ahead at work.
Pisces:
French Angelfish are fierce defenders of their territory. You may have to stand up for yourself. Stand strong!

Comfort TV When You’re Recovering From An Illness By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Paweł Czerwiński on Unsplash
I am still recovering from chemotherapy. Apparently, it’s not a fast thing. While I’m trying to live my life and write, sometimes my brain gets overloaded. Currently more than usual. So I write as much as I can. Yesterday I wrote 500 words on one book, 500 on another, and then edited a 3rd. I hit a confusing spot, marked it, and said, “I’m done for the day.” My brain was spinning.
What do I do when this happens? I try not to feel defeated. I used to be the person who could write all day. When I hit the pink chemo brain wall, I watch comfort tv which makes me happy.
I love “Corner Gas.” Both the older series and the new animated version makes me laugh when nothing else does. https://www.cornergas.com/sitcom/
The series on Amazon Prime that makes me giggle the most is “Good Omens,” from the book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Now I can’t wait until I have most of my books under my belt and done. As a reward to myself, I’ll read Good Omens (the book). https://www.amazon.com/Good-Omens-Season-1/dp/B07FMHTRFD
The other day I was delighted to watch the movie “Stardust.” That’s from the book by Neil Gaiman. If you haven’t seen it, you’ll want to. I was clicking through premium channels and just happened to find it.
To round out my comfort TV, I have to add “Bob’s Burgers” on Hulu. It is actually in several places. This is an animated sitcom.
May your Saturday be splendid and not blustery and cold.

For the Love of…Writing Resources, Part 2
Today, I continue my list of favorite writing resources. If you missed Part 1, here’s the link: https://nightsofpassion.wordpress.com/2020/02/20/for-the-love-ofwriting-resources-part-1/
Before I start, I want to reiterate that the books and classes and articles listed in this series of blog posts have been of huge benefit to me, but every writer is unique. Take what works for you and ignore the rest!
For Part 2, I’m focusing on one particular mentor and his writing books, because I’ve had so many a-ha moments while reading them. I will warn you that his books have so much information, that I’ve found it impossible to absorb it all in one reading. So several of my copies are wearing out!
Donald Maass is a fabulous and successful literary agent I had the pleasure of meeting in person at the Writer Unboxed Unconference. His books delve deep into story and how to write the best one you can. Below is a list of the books I can personally recommend:
Writing the Breakout Novel
Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook

The Fire in Fiction: Passion, Purpose and Techniques to Make Your Novel Great
Writing 21st Century Fiction: High Impact Techniques for Exceptional Storytelling
The Emotional Craft of Fiction: How to Write the Story Beneath the Surface

Incredibly Slow Zombie Paranormal-Scope
Photo Courtesy by Jen Theodore on Unsplash
If you bring up the subject of zombies, you always get this debate. Some people don’t think they are real except maybe in Haiti. Others firmly believe they are lurking everywhere.
Now the CDC which gives us medical warnings and procedures to keep safe has been busy with the coronavirus. If you can’t find a medical mask anywhere, you may want to read this: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html
They also have an interesting view on zombie preparedness. https://www.cdc.gov/cpr/zombie/index.htm
I can’t help but wonder if we’ve made the lists of fearful things too long. Maybe we could cross off one or two. Maybe skeletons? Maybe zombies?
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Tired zombies don’t seem to care about much. Make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep.
Taurus:
Slow zombies enjoy nature more. Stop and smell the new daisies as they arrive. Don’t miss out on your life.
Gemini:
Zombies don’t always get their household chores done, but then again they wander off and find a new house. Prioritize your time. Do the most important things first.
Cancer:
Zombies like to follow dogs. It’s good to share time with friends.
Leo:
Some zombies are entranced by movie theaters especially those showing films where the zombies run. They wonder why be in such a hurry with life. Are you missing out on wonderful things? Do them.
Virgo:
Zombies sway to good music. Add some new music to your collection of CDs or go out with friends. You don’t need a partner to dance.
Libra:
Zombies are superstitious and won’t step on cracks in the sidewalk. They can’t remember why. What superstitions can you get rid of?
Scorpio:
Zombies walk in all kinds of weather. Prepare your home with provisions.
Sagittarius:
One zombie is a stroll. Two are a conversation. Three or more is a parade. Enjoy the upcoming holidays with friends and/or family.
Capricorn:
Zombies have dreams where the world is kinder and there’s more time for fun. Work on making those dreams come true.
Aquarius:
Zombies do not understand eggs. They roll them in the grass and then can’t find them. This is the time to put eggs in a basket. Figure out what your assets are.
Pisces:
A zombie had a dream of being a person. He woke up and was. Set your heart on your dream and watch what happens.

What Are You Doing With Your Extra Day? By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Aljoscha Laschgari on Unsplash
Today is Saturday, February 29, 2020. According to Wikipedia and the Gregorian Calendar, “every year that is exactly divisible by four is a leap year, except for years that are exactly divisible by 100, but these centurial years are leap years if they are exactly divisible by 400. For example, the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 are not leap years, but the years 1600 and 2000 are.”
The morning is new and I haven’t decided yet what to do for the day. It depends on the weather. I will, of course, write. But as I go out the door, I’m thinking of a new adventure. I won’t be inside watching Hopalong Cassidy as I do every Saturday morning. (Well, maybe one episode for the road.)
Happy Trails on your Extra Day!

Uniquely Great
It’s funny. As my kids get older, I hear their little voices replaying a lot of what I felt as a kid—why can’t I grow up faster? Why can’t I be like this or less like that? Why does so and so seem to make it look so easy when I can’t? Oh and how I recall my parents telling me that it would come soon enough and to appreciate what I had. Man were they right and man does it grit on my nerves admitting so. Not because I have an issue with admitting my parents were right. This isn’t the first example of this occurring nor will it be the last. Still, I wish I could have trusted their words with the same degree of certainty then as I do now, especially having lived all the years in between. And realizing this, I also realize that my kids will probably do the exact same thing with any “sage” advice I give them.
Still, I’m going to write it for anyone out there reading this in hopes that they may take a bit of this advice and actually believe it in time to save themselves years of doubt. We are all unique and that is fine, more than fine in fact! We should embrace this! I don’t want to be callous and speak for those who do not have what they need. I have never truly experienced lacking something I absolutely need and therefore I cannot speak to what I don’t know. I’m talking less about need and more about want. We want to be many things but it is important to realize who we are and what we have, versus focusing on what we lack or could use. There is happiness in appreciating our uniqueness and variety. In understanding our diversity as a whole and our differences as individuals. So as you go through this week, I’m going to task you with one assignment or mind challenge. You don’t need to share, just challenge yourself to think about your differences in a different light. Any chance you can come up with something good about you?
Have a great week and happy writing!

Dog Tales Paranormal-Scope
[image error]
A few years back, Pete crossed the rainbow bridge, and there isn’t a day when we don’t miss him. He raised two abandoned kittens, frightened a herd of deer on a regular basis, and avoided chipmunks whenever possible. He, himself, had been raised by an orange tabby cat named Isis. He never knew what the word dog meant. He only knew all creatures by their family names: Mom, Dad, Pete, Isis, etc. Being with Pete was always a moment of hilarious joy.
Of all creatures, they are the least paranormal and the most mystical being a physical form of love.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Dogs love unconditionally. They never expect kindness back. Not all humans are like that, so be aware that some acts of kindness have strings attached.
Taurus:
Dogs love learning new games and seeing new places. Indulge in developing new skills. An opportunity is coming your way.
Gemini:
Dogs know what it is to be betrayed and let down. Watch your back. Someone doesn’t have your best interest at heart.
Cancer:
Dogs love spending time with those that show their love in actions and deeds. Hangout with those humans and make your life a hundred times better.
Leo:
Okay, dogs don’t really enjoy baths. But afterward, they love the cuddling and the new collar and the new toys. Know you have to get through some tough stuff, to be happier in the end.
Virgo:
Dogs listen to everyone regardless of age. Elders and young ones are equaled valued. Do the same.
Libra:
Dogs like people love makeovers. Go through the experience together and it will boost both your confidence in life and new adventures.
Scorpio:
Dogs love the comfortable things in life. Have you enjoyed that kind of pampering yourself? You should.
Sagittarius:
Dogs are naive little beings and sometimes believe in people they should not. Keep your ears open. Take caution in what you believe. Personal matters at home are the most important at this time.
Capricorn:
Dogs like to make friends. An old friend will re-enter your life and bring a new opportunity for you. It could change the way you live.
Aquarius:
Dogs are thoughtful and pay attention to the tiniest detail. Don’t be fooled in business. Be thoughtful and analyze those details.
Pisces:
Dogs have a cheerful attitude which is contagious. Catch it and spread it among your peers. You will feel better for it.

Finding Characters in Amazing Places By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Devonshire on Unsplash – Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center, Baltimore Pike, Gettysburg, PA, USA
When I wrote The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais, I found my hero in an unexpected place. David Hilliard was shot down during the Battle of Gettysburg and during the night with bodies strewn across the battlefield, he lay dying, his life’s blood seeping into the ground. He stared up and a chalky face with fangs stared down at him and took what was left of David’s life. He had been in the 14th New York Infantry.
My stories come from dreams, but then I go out into the world and do the research. If travel isn’t possible at that moment, I read books and go online and study maps and cemetery lists. On an early online cemetery record, I found that two Hilliards were killed at Gettysburg. I thought what if there was a third Hilliard brother? This is mixing fiction with the fact now.
About three years ago, I made another trip to Gettysburg. I’ve been there lots in my life because my husband is a Civil War buff. A new dream about the Civil War has been percolating in my brain. I decided to visit the graves of the two real brothers and pay my respects.
First off, the National Cemetery for Gettysburg is enormous. The New York State section is huge. I do very badly in heat and humidity but decided to chance it anyway. My husband followed me every step of the way. After hours we had to give up. Going to the drug store, I got cold packs for my legs and had to lay in air conditioning for hours before the pain and nausea passed away.
The next day we went back to the Visitor’s Center. I asked one of the rangers there, why would the name be on a list as killed at Gettysburg but not be buried in the National Cemetery here. He gave me two value causes. Being from New York, some families arranged to have their loved ones’ remained transported to the Civil War cemetery in Syracuse. Others took them home to their own family burial grounds.
I learned a valuable lesson. Always ask the archiving historian first before you hike for hours in the hot sun. Still, I was glad to have the on-foot experience and what I learned this time will go into another book.
All the best for another fun and exciting adventure in life.

For the Love of…Writing Resources, Part 1
I am a serious book nerd. There, I said it. Whew, it’s good to have that out in the ether.
I have hundreds of fiction paperbacks in all kinds of genres. I probably have a hundred reference books about writing, encyclopedias about the spiritual world, mythology, and on and on. There’s a room in my basement filled to the brim, cabinets are nearly overflowing, plus every built-in in the house has books that belonged to my paternal grandmother. Even her complete set of Jane Austen books, such a treasure.
If you’re a writer, you have your special list of resources; books, articles, notes taken at a conference, an online class. We all do. What surprised me recently was some of my top go-to resources were unknown to two of my writer friends.
What? What?
So, I decided to write posts about resources I’ve used to help me write the Zodiac Assassins series books. I won’t overwhelm you, thus the part 1. All of these resources have equal weight with me, for varying reasons. As I go through these, I hope you’ll take a look for yourself. Perhaps one or more will help you as much, or more, than me.
Here we go!
Fav Resource for Creating Character Arcs
If, like me, you struggle to structure an organic character arc from beginning to ending, this book has been a life and story saver. It keeps me on track when I’m tempted to go off on a tangent that veers away from who my character is.
Personality TypesUsing the Enneagram for Self-Discovery By Don Riso and Russ Hudson
Fav Book That Inspired The Zodiac Assassins
Born on a Rotten Day by Hazel Dixon-Cooper
A hilarious take on the zodiac signs. After reading it, I applied the wonderful question from the TV series Leverage, “Sometime the bad guys are the only good guys you get”, to my series. So much fun!
Fav Online Class
Discovering Story Magic
DSM and its offshoot, Turning Points, is a wonderful method of ferreting out the plot outline of your story, as well as getting to the truth of your protagonist, antagonist and villain. Laura teaches a limited number of classes through Writer University, but you can buy the lesson packets from her at:
Laura Baker – Fearless Writer
http://www.fearlesswriter.com/packets
My next post will continue this dive into resources that inspire me, educate me, and generate questions that help me create. I hope these books and classes help you, but not all of them will. Check them out, but please use what will truly help you and discard the rest. Until part 2…
May your words flow freely,
