When We Arrive
Where has time gone—I’m not seriously asking this question for an answer, but I write this as I feel like it is a reoccurring theme in my life. My 7 year old asks me why time is always moving so quickly and while I tell him to focus on the moment and enjoy it, I marvel as his insight at such a young age. As a child I remember being impatient to be older, to experience life. Now I am and I want it to slow down. What I really want to tell my son is I understand him and it is only going to move faster but I don’t think this admission helps any.
I hurt my foot a couple weeks or so ago and have since spent time limping around. Like others from my generation, I researched this foot issue on a plethora of websites and found it most closely resembled plantar fasciitis in description. And when I further researched plantar fasciitis, I found an article jokingly referencing the start of old age. This would be funny, only I just recently celebrated a birthday and my feelings of time flying only compounded the matter—somehow I’ve found myself in a time machine, speeding through time only to have occasional moments of clarity where I ask myself where the time went.
I imagine at some point or other we all step into this time machine. There is no other recourse in this life, despite the contrived efforts of creams and tonics or even the natural influence of diet and exercise. The clock ticks day in and day out. Either way, we will get where we are going. We may not be able to control that but we can control how we get there and who we want to be when we arrive.
Happy writing this week!

Preparing for Winter Paranormal-Scope
Photo Courtesy by Kacper Szczechla on Unsplash
Outside my home, snowflakes are fiercely flying. Winter has arrived with its bitter cold, the wish in all of us to stay home and be warm, and the crazy shopping spree. Remember as you travel, be cautious. So many are in the snow zone this week.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Yetis love building forts in the snow. Check over your home and make sure you have emergency supplies.
Taurus:
Mermaids dancing on the waves began to shiver and instead dove deep. You will find treasure when you dive deep into yourself. You’re an amazing person. Now go out with friends.
Gemini:
Sirens scream a warning but over the blizzard, no one hears them. Pay attention to the people around you to better assess a problem.
Cancer:
Shapeshifters wish they could be were pugs. Appreciate yourself. You are great just as you are. Don’t wish to be someone else. Dine with family and/or friends who believe in you.
Leo:
Werewolves are proof that being fur isn’t always great. They itch. Take care of your skin. Moisturize.
Virgo:
Elves get testy this time of year. Too much to do. Too much stress. Dedicate some time to breathing and enjoying your surrounding. Relax.
Libra:
Faeries are entranced by the decorations. Enjoy your world around you. Spend some time decorating your home.
Scorpio:
Pixies are light-fingered. They have been pilfering anything shiny they can find and hiding their treasures in tree hollows. You are going to find good things in unexpected places.
Sagittarius:
Faeries are known for their charms. Be aware that some people will try to use their charms on you. Do go in on any deals. Don’t take risks at this time.
Capricorn:
Dragons like to cuddle. Do you have a cuddle buddy? Time to invite that person over for egg nog and a movie.
Aquarius:
Vampires love winter nights. They stroll at their leisure and take in the sights. Every century is the same, yet every century is different. Enjoy the differences in others, but avoid the vampire on the corner.
Pisces:
Goblins love a good balance sheet. Make a list of what gifts you want to buy, but don’t overspend.

Love, Recovering from Cancer, and Writing By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Dominik Dombrowski on Unsplash
Life can look serene. There are moments when it is, and we take a deep breath to inhale the beauty, happiness, and tranquility. If only that moment could stay a bit longer or forever. But life changes, and we face new experiences every day. Still, we have that scene forever in our hearts.
Love is unlimited in its forms. For some. love is embodied in their mate. For others, their passion is their religion, business, art, or hobby. Some give their love to babies. Others give their love to fur babies. Families and friends can be fountains of love. Love has many forms and when it’s given as a gift, unconditionally, it fills our lives with wonder. I’ve seen that sparkle of childlike wonder and happiness when a person is in love.
I am grateful to know that experience.
Recently I filled out an author interview for a blog and they asked the question, “Who is your hero?” I wrote about my husband who has stuck with me through thick and thin. Not everyone goes through what I did. I had breast cancer on top of advanced Lyme disease, and I had an extremely hard time with the chemotherapy and surgery. I’m recovering from all of it, but it is slow going. My husband is always with me both in the hospital, in the infusion center, or at home. He is a father and grandfather and is the heart of the family. He is a great guy.
When I write a romance, I set my standards for the hero by my husband. I want my hero to be kind, funny at times, clever, and no matter what other qualities he has, to possess a true enduring love for the heroine. I am continuing to write more books for the Arnhem Knights of New York series. Each book is a stand-alone tale and focuses on a member of the Vander Meer family of vampires and their friends.[image error]
Recovering from cancer isn’t easy. My energy level is not back to normal yet. It’s also put me behind in my holiday shopping. If you are behind in yours, may I recommend books? The Vampire with a Blanket of Stars is available in Amazon Kindle and print.
Wishing you joy and love!

Thanksgiving is Here!
Thanksgiving is here and this is one of my favorite holidays of the year! It is one of the only holidays we are thinking very much about others and giving thanks for everything we are fortunate to have. It is a refreshing time of the year as folks are usually in a good mood and are most often willing to go the extra mile to help others out.
As I reflect upon this year, I have so much to be thankful for—family and good friends, health and my job. I know I’ve spent my time complaining this year about being overwhelmed at times but even still, I feel very lucky and thankful to have all I have.
As I do every year, I also want to extend a special thanks to all those who serve our country both domestically and abroad. While we certainly have our ups and downs with our own domestic turmoils, I still believe we are very fortunate to have a lot of the liberties we have (I have family and friends who are not as fortunate and my interactions with them are a reminder of our blessings). As such, I do want to end today’s blog just asking those reading it to reflect on what they are thankful for and to share it. I’ve started doing this more with my family and admittedly it is catching with the benefit of keeping one more positive and motivated.
Have a great week, Happy Thanksgiving and happy writing!

Thanksgiving Paranormal-Scope
Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving Courtesy Wikimedia Commons
On Thursday, the United States of America will be celebrating Thanksgiving usually with a meal of family and/or friends. It is a celebration of giving thanks for all we have.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Dragons love gathering with family and friends to share a toasty meal. Try out some new recipes to share with your loved ones.
Taurus:
Shapeshifters collaborate with others to get more work done before the holiday. Do the same. Be a team player.
Gemini:
Werewolves treat others with kindness. Keeping in the spirit of the holiday, say a few kind words to those you work with and meet. You will make someone’s day.
Cancer:
Vampires have very old friends and family, so they need a large place in which to celebrate. And a lot of food! Take a headcount when planning your feast and make extra.
Leo:
Zombies follow the scent of roast turkey. If they can’t have brains, they want turkey. On the bright side, they will be the first to fall asleep after eating. Don’t forget the cranberry sauce. Someone close to you loves it.
Virgo:
Goblins are meticulous with money. Before spending make a budget. Estimate how much you will spend on each gift. Try not to go over.
Libra:
Dragons are far-sighted. Gather with family and friends will relax you. Afterward set down your career goals and some steps you could take to make your dreams come true.
Scorpio:
Elves declutter their home before a feast. It gives more room in the house for the expected company and is a ceremony of letting go of the past before accepting the turkey and the potential of the future.
Sagittarius:
Faeries are known for their charms. Be aware that some people will try to use their charms on you. Do go in on any deals. Don’t take risks at this time.
Capricorn:
Yetis sometimes argue. It’s best to avoid them when they do. Do the same with those at the Thanksgiving meal. Don’t get involved in any argument. You don’t need that.
Aquarius:
Mermaids don’t follow what other mermaids do. They are so unique in following their own star. Don’t compare yourself with others. Follow your own path. Let glass ceilings shatter.
Pisces:
Sirens dive deep to protect their lives from dangerous surges. Your health comes first, and keep that in mind when dining on Thanksgiving.

Gratitude is an Attitude By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Melissa Van Gogh on Unsplash
In the United States, we are preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving. This means cooking a large turkey and additional side dishes: peas, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, and more. This doesn’t include desserts like pie, all kinds of pies. Then you watch a football game, where many of the watchers fall asleep because they ate too much. Turkey has amino acid tryptophan and it is often blamed for all this sleepiness. In reality, it is the combination of a huge meal with contains the amino acid tryptophan and lots of carbohydrates that can make you sleepy.
I know Thanksgiving looks like a foodie celebration. It is really a lot more. On my husband’s mother’s side of the family tree, there is an ancestor that came over on the Mayflower. For those early pilgrims, the New World they found was very harsh in winter and many died from disease and starvation. If it wasn’t for the Native American Squanto saving the day and teaching them how to plant food in this new world’s soil, the Plymouth Colony might have died out.
Thanksgiving was and is a celebration of gratitude, being grateful you’re alive, having food and shelter, having loved ones, and having a future.
Having gratitude is an attitude that gives you a clearer perspective on your life. With that thought in mind, several times a year, I write a Gratitude List. I feel tremendously better and stronger after writing it. Think what are you grateful for? Here is a part of mine for an example.
Gratitude List (I usually date it.) I don’t number it, because I’m not ranking anyone or anything.
I am grateful for:
-my life and to the doctors, nurses, and staff at my hospital
-my husband
-my children
-my son-in-law
-my grandchildren
-friends
-my pets
-my church
– a home
-food on the table
-my continued passion for writing
This is just a portion of my list. It goes on and on. Consider making a gratitude list of your own, to keep things in perspective of what is really important in your life.
Adding to my list is that I am grateful for my editor. Without her, The Vampire with a [image error]Blanket of Stars wouldn’t have been published.
Wishing you and yours a love-filled Thanksgiving!

For The Love Of…You Just Never Know
[image error]
My father was in the military and we traveled around a lot during my childhood. My mother, however, was born in the South and lived there until she married my father. When dad retired, we moved to Texas and there we stayed for the majority of my high school years and for college. Even after college I remained there, working and living for decades.
Those of you who have lived in the south understand what I’m about to say. My grandmother and mom never went out of the house without a “face” on. They had their hat, hair and heels in place, because you just never knew who you might encounter, or what might happen, and you had to be prepared.
Then there were the warnings: you better have clean underwear…just in case, makeup on and hair styled…just in case, dressed and pressed—until you were ready for a catalog photo shoot—even if you were only heading to the grocery store…just in case. Maybe because you were going to the store; goodness knows it was the hotspot of gossipy congregation.
When it came to being powder-puffed and perfect, my mom was up there with the best of them. She never seemed to sweat, her hair never flopped or frizzed; even her clothes refused to wrinkle as if to do so would be considered rude. I always envied my mother that because I didn’t inherit that gene. ‘You just never know’ didn’t stick, though I wanted it to. Instead, I’ve gone through life wrinkled and rumpled, and my hair and makeup never quite right.
But still, ‘you just never know’ did resonate with me. This past week I was reminded of the vagaries of life and why it’s important to be ready to say ‘yes’ when opportunities plow into you.
I was honored to be a guest on the You Tube show, “The Early Late Night Live Show” last Wednesday night, especially since we were encouraged to dress up for Halloween, which I adore. The show had a lovely lady for a guest host, and we talked afterward. When the topic of podcasts came up, I told her that as an author I was interested in doing podcasts to get my name in front of the public, and to my delight, this lady not only asked to interview me for an online community paper, but she helped me get an appearance on a local radio show.
Without hesitation, I said yes to both. I had experienced a ‘you just never know’ moment. The point is, when you have opportunities pop up like that, be ready to say ‘yes’ even if you feel uncomfortable or unsure, even at the risk of looking silly. There was a time when I was younger that I would have done most anything to not look silly, but I suppose when you have lived a few decades, humiliation becomes as fuzzy and muted as your vision.
Be willing to fail, be willing to laugh at yourself, be willing to walk through that open door rather than waiting for the next one to open. And if you need a boost in confidence, pack an extra pair of underwear…because you just never know.
May your words flow freely,

Cardinals Vs. Zombies Paranormal-Scope
Photo Courtesy by Carol Carpenter on Unsplash
Cardinals are very hardy birds. They choose to winter in the north where I live. What is lesser known is the effect cardinals have on zombies.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Cardinals don’t like how zombies stare. Zombies spotting cardinals usually turn and run or stagger fast. Cardinals will go after their eyes. Be aware that appearances can deceive.
Taurus:
Hanging red clothes on a clothesline will frighten zombies away. They have a dreaded fear of the little red birds. Don’t underestimate anyone. Not even someone small.
Gemini:
Cardinals will track zombies in the snow and sing to them. The zombies hold their heads in pain unappreciative of the music. Respect that everyone has different tastes.
Cancer:
Hanging a stained glass suncatcher of a cardinal in your window will protect your house. It’s the little things that can make a difference in decor. Red does brighten up the room.
Leo:
When a confused zombie goes after the birdseed in a feeder, he or she is in for a hard time. People like cardinals are territorial, especially at work. Don’t step on any toes this week.
Virgo:
When zombies sleep they make a gurgling sound, which can attract cardinals. When they wake they are surrounded by the little red birds which cause them to run in panic. Never panic! It may only be the birds. (Homage to Hitchcock.)
Libra:
One zombie made the terrible mistake of wearing a straw hat. Cardinals descended on that warm perch. Poor zombie. Wear simple seasonal clothes this week. Don’t make a fashion faux pas.
Scorpio:
Zombies have been known to avoid parks, where cardinals dwell. Enjoy nature and get outside more for walks.
Sagittarius:
Zombies visiting a garden center became transfixed by the many suncatchers with cardinals on them. Buy a new item to make your home shine. May I suggest a cardinal suncatcher?
Capricorn:
Zombies are confused by zombie statutes that have cardinals on their heads. They stare for hours. Time to visit an art show or museum. Staring is peaceful for the brain.
Aquarius:
One zombie watching cardinals at a feeder began hopping instead of staggering. Consider a new exercise, yoga, or dance class. As always ask your physician first.
Pisces:
A zombie surrounded by cardinals stood perfectly still hoping they would go away. More came to perch on the new zombie statute. Time heals wounds, so don’t worry.
Final Score: Cardinals 12 – Zombies 0

What is Your Inspiration? By Susan Hanniford Crowley
[image error]
I Everyone has an inspiration for the work you do. Whether you are a nurse or an author, it is life that moves you.
In my case, it is part of my recovery that I chase these three. They are my grandchildren. I never thought being a grandmother would be this much fun.
Inspiration can come through dreams, hobbies, adventures in life, travels, or meeting interesting people. It can also come through studying a time or place. Historical authors know their time period and place so well, they could live there. They know what they ate, how they made a living, how they slept, etc.
We are constantly given inspiration every single day. Inspiration can come through a song on the radio, the sunrise, sunset, walking on the beach, down a street, through a part.
Playing is something we forget as we get older. But enjoying the game again is simply inspiring. I’ve learned that if you build your tower of blocks tall enough, someone will come by to knock it down. What do you do when that happens? Laugh. Inspiration is the process.
What do inspired people do? The list is endless.
1. Cook great meals
2. Crochet or knit warm blankets
3. Make treasured toys
4. See the music in math
5. Code a website like you’re conducting a symphony
6. Landscape in a new way
7. Driving through the countryside
It goes on. The main thing is that the inspiring event starts the process of creation.
What inspires you?

Thank you to all the United States of America Veterans for your service. Photo Courtesy by Jp Valery on Unsplash.
Veterans Day honors the service of our living veterans. This day has been very important to me as I grew up in a military family.

Mermaids know where not to swim. Riptides can do terrible things to fins. You have budding relationships still in development. Tread water carefully.
Gemini:
Sirens scream due to broken contracts long ago by a particular sailor. Don’t get burned in the same way. Don’t sign until you’ve had any important document examine by legal counsel.
Cancer:
Pixies love to get together and party. This is a great week for you to do the same. Invite all those dear to your heart.
Leo:
Faeries cherish listening to the stories of the elder fae. Visit a family member or friend you are close to. Reminisce about old good times.

Vampires are good with details and tying up loose ends like in a book. Take time this week to look at the business in your life, set some goals, and finish the unfinished.
Aquarius:
Dragons enter into agreements that are watertight. They know which dragon is responsible to do what action. You might want to tighten up your life as well.
Pisces:
Big Foot leaves big footprints. Opportunities are coming your way. Investigate and get advice before deciding on one.
