Book Launch & Contest: Celebrating The Vampire with a Blanket of Stars by Susan Hanniford Crowley

I’m excited with the arrival of my books for the book signing in October at the Fall in Love with New England Romance Readers and Authors Conference. Presenting The Vampire with a Blanket of Stars in Amazon Print and now in Kindle, too.

This novel is the 3rd in the Arnhem Knights of New York series and features Prince Răzvan, the eldest son of King Maximillion Vander Meer of New York. What is it about?

Night fell with the snow. Vampire Prince Răzvan stood at a crossroads in the Carpathian [image error]Mountains of Romania. On that cold wintry night in 1938, something unseen spoke to his heart, and he led his companions into the forest. A flash of silver in the dark! A whisper to his heart so soft it ached!

Then he saw the gypsy encampment in the deep woods and knew they would take refuge there for the rest of the night. At first, she hid behind the others. But when she peeked out, his heart was lost gazing into the exotic blue eyes of the raven-haired beauty. He felt the excitement rushing through her blood like wine, making her reckless and wild. She should have been afraid of him. His dark visions of the future should have terrified her. Still, she remained spellbound by his gaze and would not turn away.

While the others slept, two hearts stood in the snow hidden behind a tree, watched by the stars. But it would not stay night forever.

Save the Date: The book signing will be Saturday, October 19 from 2 pm – 5 pm at the Holiday Inn & Suites Nashua, NH.

The Contest: One lucky commenter will win their choice of  the signed print book or Kindle ebook of The Vampire with a Blanket of Stars. To enter type, “I want Prince Răzvan”, in the comment box.  If you can’t manage the accent on his name, that’s okay. The contest with for US residents only and ends at noon Eastern Time on Monday, Sept. 9, 2018 and is void where prohibited by law. Good luck.

For the Love of Dogs and Human Connection

Posted on September 5, 2019 by Artemis Crow

I have always loved animals. Horses, cats, dogs, hamsters, you name it and I love it. In light of that and in order to keep our home from becoming a complete zoo, my hubby and I restricted the species to Dobermans; our own, as well as a host of Dobermans we fostered for a North Carolina rescue we joined in 2005. Even after moving to New Hampshire, we have continued to foster one Dobie at a time for a local rescue. Over the years I’ve lost count of the number of dogs we’ve fostered, and the number of dogs we’ve had to let go to what rescuers call the Bridge.

Recently, we had to let our matriarch Dobie go, a dog we started fostering when she was 7 weeks old and adopted not long after that. It’s been a rough time, the pain and loss reflected not just in our human hearts, but also in the three puppy boys left behind.

Why bring this up in a blog post you ask? I write about our loss, not to depress you, but to illustrate how important this kind of pain is to our writing. My writing has been effected by her loss as I’m in the midst of pushing to meet the deadline for my next book. It sucks to not be able to curl into a ball and hide from the world, but I’ve realized that channeling my loss into my writing has been cathartic, and has helped me find the emotion that I sometimes struggle to express on the page.

Our characters can’t be like just us, and we don’t want them to be. As writers, we have to explore a range of emotions even those that make us uncomfortable or we struggle to understand. Only then can we more fully discover who our characters are and make them real to the readers so that they may see themselves in our stories. Touching the lives of our readers so that they feel seen, and heard, and understood should be the goal of every writer. By finding that level of connection we can better appreciate, not just the differences in the ways we experience the world, but when it comes to love and loss, how very much we are alike.

May Your Words Flow Freely,

Artemis

Labor Day Paranormal-Scope

Photo Courtesy by Henriette Welz on Unsplash

The lazy days of summer are coming to an end. Already stores are decorating for Halloween. My heart goes out to the lovely people of the Bahamas with Hurricane Dorian making a Category 5 landfall there. I know in Florida, areas were being evacuated. Wherever you all, please, be safe!

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:

Elves are endlessly creative. This week extend yourself. New opportunities and ideas are coming your way.

Taurus:

Shapeshifters embrace their hobbies. It will energize you to do the same.

Gemini:

Faeries are removing clutter from their homes. Do likewise. If you have a tag sale, look up beforehand what some of your items are worth.

Cancer:

Werewolves enjoy hanging out with old friends. Make some new ones, too. This can make a difference in your life.

Leo:

Mermaids watch the boats being taken away. They wave with laughter. Change is in the air. This can be a very exciting time for you.

Virgo:

Yetis are filled with joy. They love the briskness of fall. Plan a trip or take a course on something you’ve always wanted to know.

Libra:

Dragons love chatting with those close. This is the time to make those relationships stronger.

Scorpio:

Zombies are packing for a getaway. They won’t notice you as you walk by. It isn’t you. They are just excited. Talk to a trusted friend or a counselor on how increase your happiness.

Sagittarius:

Sirens sing of distant lands. Add to your music collection. Go to a concert. Put some jazz in your step and see the good things in life.

Capricorn:

Ghosts float up, but they don’t get you down. Plan an event for family or friends. Take a “me” trip to refresh yourself before that date.

Aquarius:

Pixies are all abuzz. There’s nothing like an end of summer bash. Plan on meeting everyone at a hotel or resort. You need to relax. Resting means not doing dishes.

Pisces:

The vampire looks at the past, present, and future like a river floating by. He thinks of all those people special to his heart. There is someone special to your heart. Spend time with them.

Reflecting on Life!

Life has been changing for me moment by moment.

I purposely stop myself to reflect on what I’ve learned and what remains a mystery.

There are people you meet, that you wish could stay forever; they are that much fun. Then they leave and their absence is like trying to fill the Grand Canyon. It reminds me to deeply love and appreciate those that are still here.

Science Fiction Author Chet Gottfried With Monster Selection Part 2

From science fiction writer Chet Gottfried, author of the hiliarious SF novel Into the Horsebutt Nebula.

An assassin bug (otherwise known as a wheel bug nymph (Arilus cristatus).

In my previous piece, I discussed various types of monsters, from dinosaurs to snapping turtles. Today’s piece takes a different direction: bugs.

When it comes down to alien and noxious species, bugs have excellent potential. Of course, there are bugs and bugs, although some choices are better than others. Ticks, for example, make a person twitch or scratch, which is hardly the mood any writer or artist wishes to promote. Mosquitoes aren’t much better. How could that incessant buzzing encourage anyone to relax with a story?

Kindly consider ticks and mosquitoes the exceptions, because there are some great bugs out there. For example, how about an assassin bug. There are various types of assassin bugs, and the one shown below is a wheel bug nymph (Arilus cristatus), the type of creature that should be good for nightmares. Its bright red proboscis (seen underneath its head, in a resting position) is used to stab a victim and suck its victim dry.

The wheel bug nymph is only about an inch and a half long, but it doesn’t take much imagination to enlarge the bug and have it stalk its victims.

Perhaps I’ll use the assassin bug in a story one day, but my problem is this: The wheel bug nymph isn’t particularly common, and most people will have never encountered one. A vivid description might do the bug justice, but there has been a trend against description. Modern taste and all that.

There are more alternative bugs that people are familiar with and which make fine monsters, such as a dragonfly. With excellent eyesight, flight, and ability to maneuver, a dragonfly could easily be a winged emissary of death. Moreover, dragonflies are visually impressive, with striking colors, huge eyes, and transparent wings. The one shown below is a male blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis).

An assassin bug A blue dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) dragonfly.

At present dragonflies aren’t particularly large, perhaps a few inches; however, back during the Carboniferous and Permian periods (in the Paleozoic era, long before dinosaurs), an early form of dragonfly had a wingspan of over 2 feet. Now we’re getting into real monster action.

Dragonflies themselves are friendly creatures, but with a wizard’s magic and the addition of new features, such as poison, I created weirdragons, oversize dragonfly-like insects that inhabit my fantasy novel The Gilded Basilisk. Monsters can be ever so much fun, especially when combined with a distinct purpose.

Silver Lining

Life is full of surprises. Sometimes they are good, or not so good. Sometimes they are just plain bad. I guess it is all a matter of your perspective in many cases. I recently got some of that blah news that I just can’t seem to turn into a good situation no matter how I look at it—and for those who have read my posts before, I’m a fairly optimistic person. Still, as bad as a situation can be, I will say that for many of them, they can also be learning experiences and perhaps that is the silver lining in this situation.

As my learning experience this time around, I’ll say that I’ve learned just how important it is to plan (there are a few exceptions to this and those rambling writing periods are instances where I’d say the plans can go out the window) for so many things in life. Additionally, I will say that it is important to realize no matter how wise we believe we are or how gullible we aren’t, never say never to almost anything. My recent gripe is about an older friend who was taken advantage of by a scammer. This person isn’t stupid, nor are they usually gullible—they are just at a time in their life where they want so badly for the scam to be true. Not to mention with their age, they just aren’t thinking and questioning on all cylinders like they used to.

Unfortunately, for all the good there is in the world, we also live in a world where many thrive on taking advantage of others. I still believe in good and I know tons of very generous people, but this particular experience is just another one to make me a bit more cautious and wary of the world. Sad really, but it is also a reality.

So lesson of today? I promise it isn’t to walk the world weary and cautious but more to just be aware and ask questions before just accepting what doesn’t make sense.

Happy writing and may this week be productive for you.

Explore Rare Supernaturals Paranormal-Scope

Photo Courtesy by Gautier Salles on Unsplash

Things are not always what they seem. Whether it is walking on a dock surrounded by fog or traveling down a country road at twilight as the shadows lengthen and the sun is lost in the tangle of trees. Our imagination can be the scariest place of all.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:

The Inuit have a murderous creature called the Adlet. It is half-human and half-dog. As Fall approaches, decorate your home to create a festive mood. Chase those negative or scary thoughts away.

Taurus:

The Acheri of Northern India brings illness to those who cross its path. It may be time for a wellness checkup with your doctor.

Gemini:

The Nuckelavee of Scotland has one enormous eye, a pig’s nose, and arms that scrape on the ground. It also brings illness. Re-evaluate your exercise program. Remember to confer with your physician first.

Cancer:

The Gulon of Sweden has a fox’s tail, a lion’s body, and a cat’s head. As an eater of the dead, it likes to dig up the past. Consider where your search for family history can take you.

Leo:

The Futakuchi-onna from Japan looks like a woman but beneath her hair at the back of her head is a very hungry mouth. She can’t stop eating. She usually appears to those who are being greedy. Share with others.

Virgo:

The Rompo eats anything dead. Its frightful appearance is made of the body parts from various other animals. It’s time to go through the wardrobe, toss the old, and get some new things.

Libra:

People on the Orkney Islands once talked about the magical Finfolk. They could live on land or in the ocean, but often came on shore to find a husband or wife. You will make a new friend. Smile a lot.

Scorpio:

In Australia, children are warned that if they play too close to the water, the green-furred Bunyip could drag them under. It’s the end of summer, and many people are not paying attention and want to do everything fast. Be careful of your surroundings.

Sagittarius:

Bokkenrijders from Dutch folklore tell us of powerful sorcerors that would ride in the sky on goats. Walk on the other side of the street to avoid mischief makers.

Capricorn:

The Matagot is from Southern France and can be either good or evil. If well-fed with chicken, it can bring wealth to the cook. Invite some friends over for a meal. Be sure to serve chicken.

Aquarius:

The Leeyak of Bali is a terrifying, blood drinking shapeshifter.  Be flexible with the changes coming your way for a better outcome.

Pisces:

The Manananggal is a vampiric creature from the Phillipines that actually splits itself to fly. Multitasking isn’t aways the best way to do things. By prioritizing and giving each project the time it deserves, your work may be less stressful.

Some Bare Essentials to a Great Book

Recently, I’ve been completely caught up in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I remember hearing about these books years ago when attending a writer’s conference, but I only recently began to watch the series and revisit the books in more detail. No surprise, but they are spectacular! And, as I get pulled into this series and into the lives of the characters that I have come to know and love, I can’t help but think about how and why I believe she has done such a incredible job in writing the books. For this reason, I want to go into more detail as to what are some essential  things that make a book or books so enjoyable.

First off, you’ve got to have great characters that make your readers feel. The ultimate tortured hero, the headstrong heroine, the villain you hate oh so much—Gabaldon does such a great job with this.

Second, you need a credible plot or at the very least realistic reactions to what is happening. In Outlander, Gabaldon’s main characters travel though time and while that sounds crazy, what makes it work is that the characters believe it crazy as well. Additionally, she doesn’t purely shine light on the good qualities of the time period or her characters but in fact also magnifies the flaws of individuals and the absurdities that the dealt with traveling to different times.

Finally. I will highlight how all of Galbaldon’s historical accuracy and detail truly made her series all the more fascinating and believable. Nothing pulls a reader out of a story faster than a book with huge gaps in logic or tons of errors when making historical references, unless the author makes it clear they have some reason for doing this and that it is part of the storyline.

Bottomline, a good book can take some effort but Gabaldon’s Outlander series is an example this paying off. Happy writing this week!

Explore Boggarts Paranormal-Scope

Photo Courtesy by Keith Williamson / Boggart Hole Clough Brook / CC BY-SA 2.0 on Wikipedia. Boggart Hole Clough Brook in England. This park, just north of Manchester city centre, contains some dramatic ravines. Local legend associates a boggart with this area. A boggart is a mischievous spirit mainly found in Lancashire and Yorkshire. they were thought to be responsible for poltergeist activity.

A boggart in English Folklore may inhabit a house but is more likely to be found in marshes or fields. Other names for the boggart is bogie, bugbear, or bogeyman. This is a week of mysterious things. Keep your eyes open.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:

Boggarts are not usually friendly. To protect one’s home, you can hang a horseshoe above the door. Take other measure, too, like checking the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Taurus:

Some boggarts live in caves. Time to redecorate for the coming season. Throw out things you don’t want anymore. If they’re in good shape, give them to charity.

Gemini:

In Norththumberland, England, brownies who are generally helpful household creatures can become a boggart is offended. Some people are offended easily. Focus on work and avoid lenthy conversations.

Cancer:

Boggarts can resemble humans sort of but be small or very large and have saucer eyes. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Remember to smile.

Leo:

The Grizlehurt Boggart in Lancashire is reported to have created mischief even though dead and buried. Never underestimate anyone.

Virgo:

Boggarts sometimes live under bridges. Prepare for your summer trip, but be sure to bring money for tolls.

Libra:

Boggarts are often blamed for potholes in roads. Be sure to check out your tires before going on a trip.

Scorpio:

On the moon, there is a crater called Bogie. Honor your folklore this week by reading a book of old tales.

Sagittarius:

Boggarts are walking down your street. Take another street and be aware of your surroundings.

Capricorn:

Many authors have had boggarts in their stories, each boggart being distinctive with a certain talent. You will meet a new friend with a different expertise.

Aquarius:

Slow down when you come to a sharp bend in the road. Boggarts like to hand out there. Take things slow this week, and enjoy your life.

Pisces:

Sometimes boggarts prefer to be invisible. Don’t be invisible to family or friends. Socialize more.
