For the Love of World Building By Artemis Crow

Oh, boy, do I love world building. I’m not talking about going full-on Tolkien and busting out a new language; that’s more than I wanted to do for my series. Most everything else was fair game though.

As a visually oriented person, I love photos and artwork, movies and television. When developing the Zodiac Assassins, I searched through images on Deviant Art and Pinterest and stock artwork sites looking for images that made me gasp with wonder. From those images I created new paranormal species, hoping to instill that same wonder in my readers.

Take, for example, the species Memoria Soul-Keeper. Years ago, when I subscribed to fashion magazines (not that I could ever wear or afford the clothes; I just love the pretty pretties and the photography), I saw a beautiful, towering, butterfly chapeau on the Alexander McQueen runway. Red, black and white faux monarchs mounted on individual wires that I could tell danced as the model walked. I tore out that photo and saved it. While creating the two dozen species, I knew I had to have one using that image so I began to ponder. Who are these women? What are the butterflies?

I came up with a list of words that I associated with the image and ran them through a translate program in Latin. That’s when I came across memoria (memory). From there I decided that the butterflies were the souls of the deceased from a single paranormal bloodline, and the soul-keepers protected those souls, collecting them at death. When the last member of a bloodline died, she would perform a ritual that released all the souls together.

I was able to get all that from a photo. My mom says my imagination is scary. If you agree, well, count yourself sensible.

The best part of all this is I was able to create a series Pinterest page, Artemis Crow Writes, with the images; not for myself, but for my readers. A way to connect them to the world I’ve created via the images that inspired it.

When I began creating my series, I knew I wanted to have it take place on earth, not in a fictional world, because I wanted to utilize our many mythologies. I wanted to have a hidden world, a place of darkness that would be exposed to the light of the human world, thus the subterranean world called the InBetween was born. From there I created an origin story for the InBetween, several unique species to inhabit it and the twelve Zodiac males the series would be centered around.

As you might imagine it took me a very long time to do all this, but it’s helped my series immensely going forward. The great thing about world building is it’s not just for fantasy anymore. Any genre, from sweet romance to thrillers to cozy mysteries, can benefit greatly from digging a little deeper to develop a world that readers can get lost in and cherish.

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

Giving Back

There are tons of addictions out there—many of which are not good for us. Still, we do what we do most of the time because it feels good to us. Sometimes it comes at very little cost and sometimes it comes at quite a hefty cost. As I write these words, a plethora of scenarios come to mind, some as innocent as a daily cup of coffee. In my case, I like Starbucks so this certainly can add up but the costs are different than some of those less innocent addictions out there.

What about good things we get addicted to? It’s hard to think of them but one that comes to mind for me is generosity and volunteering in the community. I recently volunteered with my kids at a mobile pantry near our home. I wanted to do this to introduce the idea of “giving back” to my kids and to be honest, there isn’t much out there that allows young children to participate in in volunteering. I had my doubts as well—it is almost impossible to keep their attention for much time. But, to my surprise, they loved it and really got into handing out the food. What’s more, they couldn’t stop talking about how good it made them feel and of course they had a ton of questions about the whole experience. Either way, it really got me thinking about how we can get a “feel good high” off of doing good as well. And these days, that is really hard to teach kids because we live in such an instant gratification world and as a parent, you want kids to understand life without having to live all of its hardships (at least if you can help it). So, lesson of today? Maybe we could make the world a bit of a better place if we were “addicted” to do things for others versus always thinking about what we want—or maybe, a little bit of balance goes a long way.

Happy writing this week!

Ah, Iceland! I Dream of You by Susan Hanniford Crowley

I went to Iceland in 2005 and still long to return there. There is so much folklore and research I’d love to do on that country. Being that it was a stopover on my way home from Scotland and the airlines was running a special with the Blue Lagoon, I only had a small amount of time to take in this luxurious experience.

This is a photo I took of the Blue Lagoon, which is a geothermal spa. I’ll tell you that I was in some pain when I went there and the waters melted it away. You do have to be careful of the sun. I used sunblock on the part of me that would be above the water. I made sure to put up my hair. I was told in advance that the water can really frizz your hair. I loved their conditioner. If you want to know more information about it, visit  https://www.bluelagoon.com/

It’s important to always check if you have a medical condition or need accommodations. You can always contact them as well. They have this page. https://www.bluelagoon.com/legal/safety-standards

When I’m in that part of the world again, Iceland is at the top of my list. I want to see the Northern Lights. What would you want to see?

Even sitting on the beach, I feel autumn coming near. When I think of the fall season, my mind turns to vampires. I love creating my sagas of vampire families and friends. They are so much fun in the writing and reading.

Vampire King of New York is the first book in my second series Arnhem Knights of New York.

Vampire King of New York, Arnhem Knights of New York, Book 1 is available in Kindle and Print!

Max Vander Meer is a modern day Viking, CEO of VMeer Industries, and a Vampire. He makes a plea to the Goddess Freya to find the only woman who can heal his heart, the woman haunting his dreams. But, the Goddess strikes a bargain with him. To find this special woman, Max must return to the city he helped build-New York, which is threatened by an ancient terror.

When he meets Evelyn, he is astounded. Could she be the one who inhabits his dreams? But Evelyn is haunted by loss and betrayal. How can Max win her love when she doesn’t trust him as a man, and she doesn’t want to be a vampire? If Max returns to Iceland without her, he will be encased in ice . . . forever!

Reading on the Beach with Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room by Susan Hanniford Crowley

Photo Courtesy by Jaap Straydog on Unsplash

I love dirigibles, blimps, and airships. Nothing is more fun than sitting on a beach and watching one float by.

Stepping again outside my vampire series today, I bring you Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room.

Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room is a steampunk/alternate history romance and is available in Kindle.

In this hot steampunk romance, the adventure begins in the sky over alternate history Victorian London, which is filled with dirigibles, but we focus on one, the infamous brothel within a lavender dirigible called Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room.

Euthalia has no choice but to work for Mrs. Bright. In walks handsome airship Captain Travers, the Queen’s spy. Sparks aren’t the only things flying with Travers, Euthalia’s first customer.

*

What is steampunk? Commonly, it is when history is altered in a story about the Wild West or Victorian England. There are usually machines and robots. So be prepared to go on an adventure with Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room.

Enjoy your day reading on the beach and be sure to use skin protection from the sun.

For the Love of Beginnings By Artemis Crow

Who doesn’t love beginnings? The giddy excitement of something new: a job, a marriage, the birth of a baby (maybe not the birth itself), or my personal favorite, a puppy. Okay, okay, for some, facing a beginning is gut wrenching.

Me? I love change…to a point. Moving is exciting, but exasperating. As a writer, starting a new book gives me the same tingle of a move, plus the where-is-the-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel fear. You know the starting point of the story, but you can’t imagine yet where the characters might take you, much less where the closest grocery stores, gas stations, or bookstores are located. See what I did there?

When the Nights of Passion blog put a call out for guest bloggers, I jumped at the chance. My plan is to post about a variety of topics from my two favorites: dogs and writing (plotting, worldbuilding, self-publishing, book signings), to what I’m reading, movies, television—pretty much whatever is on my mind at the time.

My name is Artemis Crow and I write a paranormal/fantasy with romantic elements series called the Zodiac Assassins. My series will be 25 books long, 13 novels and 12 novellas. Yikes! So far I have the first 4 books out, I’m finishing up book 5 and I’ve plotted book 6. Seriously, what was I thinking? I’m having a fun, for the most part—you know what I mean—and each book is a challenge, but there’s so much satisfaction when I type The End that it gives me the push I need to start that next book…and face the inevitable question: What am I supposed to do now?

I’m very excited and honored to be here for this new beginning. Tell me what’s on your mind so we can dish!!

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

Good Traits

Courtesy, respect, leadership, discipline, confidence, integrity—I’d say all of these are pretty good traits to have. These traits and more are some that my kids learn in their martial arts class. We teach them at home too, but to be honest sometimes I wonder if they just get lost in the blend and mile long list of things to learn. I know, no excuse.

Of course, as I write this blog, I am sitting outside my kids martial arts class and I can’t help but remark at how many people I interact with each day who are missing these traits. Or perhaps I’m thinking about the news articles I read each day.

When did we tend to lose grasp of these basics as a society? Years ago, disrespect or a knock to honor was duel worthy in some countries. Today we act without consequences in most cases. Courtesy is a luxury these days and respect even rarer. Integrity might be mistaken for some sort of antiquated word.

I get it, it’s hard. I don’t say this sarcastically but realistically as a parent trying to do a good job raising kids and as a person setting an example to other in the world. Do I make mistakes? Absolutely, I am human after all and I most certainly do not have the all the answers. Quite frankly, I won’t know until many years down the road as to whether my husband and I raised our kids well. We hope we do. In the meantime, I will ask this… Could it hurt to live our lives and include a bit more courtesy, respect, leadership, discipline, confidence and integrity? I don’t think so.

Happy writing this week!
