Loving Life By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Denys Nevozhai on Unsplash
I’m a person that has survived cancer, though the doctors keep giving me tests to confirm this. Laughs. But that’s okay with me. I am just so glad to be alive. No matter whether it’s pain or pills or a really rough time, I am overjoyed just to be here. I get the privilege of being with family and friends. I love playing with my grandchildren. Through all this, circumstances made it imperative that I retire from my part-time day job. Now I’m a full-time writer. I’m psyched. And to think months ago with “chemo brain”, I couldn’t spell psyched.
I’m already working on my next two books. I have had so many requests from readers that I write a romance for teens, that’s what I’m doing. The dreams just keep coming and I’m writing as fast as I can.
Thank you if you have voted. If you haven’t, then perhaps you haven’t heard that my new novel The Vampire with a Blanket of Stars has been nominated in the categories of YA/NA book and YA/NA series. The book is a New Adult novel. Being nominated by the Paranormal Romance Guild is a big honor, and I would dearly love to win in their Reviewers Choice Awards 2019. The reviewer called it “a love story for the ages.” It is a long scroll down to find it on the ballot. Please, vote for my book in its two categories. The reviewer said she could not put it down. https://www.paranormalromanceguild.com/2019-prg-reviewers-choice-awards-ballot/ Thank you.

Stop Pushing Off
I listened to a podcast this week about a man in Germany who drove the use of solar panels in Germany. Bottomline, he pushed forth policy for feed-in tariffs that allowed those using solar energy to receive remuneration or a tariff above the retail rates of the energy (this can be used for solar, wind, hydropower, etc).
As I was listening to this podcast about this guy that now lives in what is described as a “hobbit” house, I can’t help but think, wow that sounds nice. Now I know it is never this simple. Years ago, he made an investment in solar energy and at that time, it really didn’t pay off. It was expensive and inefficient and as such, he asked the wonderful question as to how this could all be better and easier? Many of us care about a lot of issues but we are all pinched for time and resources and that leads us to put things off endlessly or at least until we get stuck and are forced to make a change. Only then, it is sometimes too little too late.
Now I know that there are a lot of things we can throw in this bucket. We hear about them every day—many of our programs such as social security and medicare, the climate and how it is changing the planet, endangered species… I can go on and on. And all of these things are very important—I am not denying this. That being said, I’m not going to address any one of them right now. What I will say is that one area that goes overlooked, is our own care. We push appointments off, we push our health off, we push breaks for sanity off, we work and work and work and this all compounded with not addressing other issues we want to address (those I mentioned before) lead to many, many issues. Some of them we can come back from and some of them we can’t.
So the lesson in today’s blog is really about pushing things off. It is a new year (a new decade!) and with it a new start. Stop pushing you off. Stop pushing stuff you want to do off and figure out a way to fit it in. It is all important if it leads to your well being and the well being of our world.
Have a wonderful week and happy writing!

How I Survive Migraine-Fried Brain By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Nader Arman on Unsplash
My doctor has told me that whenever there is a snowstorm or rain, his phone rings off the hook with calls for help from his migraine suffering patients. I know that I feel it in my head when the barometric pressure changes. Today before I could get out of bed, I took my migraine med and a pill for nausea.
If you suffer from migraines, there are times when you can survive the brain-fried feeling without going into reclusion. I’ve been in reclusion sitting in a dark bedroom with ice on my head and hoping the pain would soon fade. But I am doing better with the medications now. It’s important to know your triggers. For me, a weird scent can set off a migraine as well as strong light and sounds.
I will watch TV with captions if I know the sound to be too much for me that day. I draw curtains to soften the light. I also use a day-light or all-spectrum light bulb. If I wake with a migraine because of barometric pressure, I take my meds right away. Using all these techniques, I would go to work (when I had a day job), but now that I’m retired and a full-time writer, I just station myself on the sofa and decide I don’t need to go out this day. I am writing this blog post using my personal migraine relieving techniques.
My husband went out to pick up a few things and found the supermarket packed with people. We are expecting a snowstorm.
For writers and others on their computers a lot, you can find the things that will help you the most. I adjust the brightness and sound on my computer. If it’s still too tough on my eyes, I switch to a tablet. I think tablets have a different kind of screen. You can also adjust the brightness there. If I’ve been hit with a mega migraine, then I’m writing in a journal to type up at a later time.
I’m not a doctor, so I am not giving medical advice. I’m only saying what works for me in addition to those prescribed meds. For migraines, you will want to see a doctor to figure out what is best for you.
While I sit on the sofa typing away in soft light and sound, I want to mention that my new book The Vampire with a Blanket of Stars has been nominated by the Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewers Choice Awards 2019 for their award which is dear to my heart. I’ve always wanted to win. The reviewer called it “a love story for the ages.” On the ballot (which is a long scroll down), the book is in the categories of Young Adult/New Adult (YA/NA) book and YA/NA series. It is a New Adult. Please, vote for my book in its two categories. The reviewer said she could not put it down. https://www.paranormalromanceguild.com/2019-prg-reviewers-choice-awards-ballot/ Thank you.

For The Love Of…Helen Mirren And Being THAT Woman
For The Love Of…Helen Mirren And Being THAT Woman
Helen Mirren
Now before you roll your eyes, and say, “Of course, who doesn’t love Helen?”, let me add, “…and what she represents.”. In this photo I see a beautiful woman of a certain age. Do I look like her? Nope. Could I look like her? Nope, and I don’t want to.
Seeing beyond the beauty is part of what this post is about. Helen is a woman at the prime of her life, proud, confident, living her very best years right now because of all the strength she’s gained over the past decades. It radiates out of her and called to me like a beacon. This photo is what inspired this post.
The appreciation of wisdom and experience is beaten down by our obsession with surface beauty until its value is naught. Rather than revere the beauty of the years etched on the eldest of our society, we overlook them, discount them because youth is all that’s celebrated.
That is a real shame. For the women like me who are of a certain age, I call to you to give society the finger and embrace the individuality and insight inside you, reveling in it like swimming in a tub filled with the priciest unguents until we have Helen’s outer glow (or at least really soft skin).
So how do we do that? For me, it was writing. Though I spent years spinning stories in my mind, I never had the confidence to put them to paper, much less seek publication. But, finally, there came the moment when I realized I had to try. It took me years of studying craft and writing drivel, but today I have 5 books out and so many more to write.
What about you? Do you have a dream you haven’t yet pursued? Something daring, like rock climbing, or skydiving? Embracing your love of the ocean with surfing, or a beach vacation with your besties? Whatever your dream, I challenge you to take the first steps.
And what about the rest of the title? That’s the other part of this post and an idea I have embraced.
Being That Woman
I very much plan to be THAT woman. The woman of an advanced age who celebrates her individuality, who embraces all that makes her happy no matter if it’s a jumble of huge stone necklaces or wild hats or statement glasses or embroidered kimonos, preferably all of them at the same time. I want to be the woman who proudly struts around with a Mohawk…if that’s what speaks to me.
Because, why not? At this time in my life I have nothing to prove to anyone. At least, that’s the mindset I am working to embrace while shedding old perceptions. And I’m getting there. I already have the fun glasses and short hair. I wear what makes me comfortable (thank all that’s holy). I have a husband who is amused by my antics and that is a true blessing.
So what calls to you? What do you need to do to embrace all of who you are? What will it take for you to throw back your shoulders, raise your chin, and glow with confidence like Helen Mirren?
If you’re not sure yet, that’s fine. Just fill your glass with wine, your bathtub with unguents and go have a soak while you contemplate just how you plan to become THAT woman. And when you’re ready, we can go for a strut together, proud to show the world who we are. I’ll be the one in the dragon kimono with the contented smile a la Helen Mirren!

What I’ve Learned From the Koala By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo Courtesy by Laura Barry on Unsplash
The world is in a whole lot of hurt because of a lot of different things. The wildfires in Australia are just one reason. People are dying. Animals are dying. While are some are feeling helpless, others are stepping up and helping any way they can.
Last week I shared a story on Facebook about a mom Koala undergoing surgery. Her baby was holding onto her. Recently we have found out that mom and baby are doing well.
There are stories out of Australia about teenagers driving around rescuing Koala Bears. A woman walked up to one with a towel as it was clinging to a tree on fire. She was able to get the little guy to safety. There has been a Koala hospital helping the burned bears.
If you would like to donate to help, here is their website. The website tells a lot more about them than the news story. https://www.koalahospital.org.au/
What have I learned from the Koalas? They are sort of the symbol of love in Australia. You can see why. All of us at some point in our lives have to decide when we will step up to help someone else, even if that someone is a Koala Bear. This disaster has brought out the best in many people.

Happy New Year Dreams and Wishes By Susan Hanniford Crowley
[image error]Happy New Year, everyone! May it be a great year for all of us.
As usual for me, I’ve been dreaming. In my case, when I write down my dreams the next morning that will eventually become another book.
This week, I was at the hospital’s infusion center and met a lovely couple. The wife was starting on the journey with cancer that I went through. We talked about traveling and books. They spoke about Greece. We spoke about Ireland.
I know every time, I register for a test or procedure at the hospital. They ask if I have been out of the country in the last 30 days. I always say, “I wish.” They laugh. It appears to be a truth that patients tethered to a hospital for life-preserving care all wish to be traveling the world.
In April, I will be going to a science fiction and fantasy conference called Heliosphere on April 3-5 to Tarrytown, New York. It’s great fun. I don’t know yet what panels and other events I will be part of yet. I love that conveniently for me it’s not a long drive from home.
Amongst the conversations in the infusion center of travel and adventure, they always return to what is dearest to our hearts: family, friends, and to return to good health.

For the Love of…Time
I had big plans to write a New Year post filled with the joy and excitement and hope that starting fresh always gives me. A new year, a new book by a favorite author, a new work in progress of mine; there are so many beginnings we have a chance to experience in a lifetime.
I was going to wax on about how I like to choose a word of the year to inspire me instead of coming up with resolutions. 2020’s word was discipline, in case you were wondering. But New Years Eve slapped me upside the head and reminded me that time is precious.
My husband and I have been involved in Doberman rescue since 2005. We’ve had a parade of foster dogs come through, but over the years I developed a real love for the seniors, special needs, and hospice dogs. The throwaways who need more work and understanding than most people feel able to handle. Those are the dogs I bring home and love for as long as they grace us. Sometimes we get years, sometimes months, sometimes weeks, but every moment is precious.
About a year and a half ago, we adopted a biped Doberman puppy named Roo. Born with nubs for front legs and severely twisted shoulder blades, he was found in a paper bag, in a shopping center parking lot, in the dead of an Ohio winter. He ended up in rescue and from there we brought him home.
Roo turned out to be a force of nature, a dynamo, a lover, a power-snuggler, a dervish who could go from zooming around the house to giving out the sweetest kisses in seconds flat. He reveled in wrestling with our German Shepherd then cleaning his huge ears. We have laughed and smiled everyday since we adopted him.
Now, we have learned that our time with Roo will be limited to weeks, or months, if we’re lucky. To say we’re wrecked by the news is an understatement. It’s not that we’ve never been given devastating news before, it’s that Roo is only two years old and so full of life. How cruel can Fate be that a puppy born with such issues gets so few years? I have no answer for you, nor do I think I’ll ever have one for myself.
Deep sigh… So, now that I’ve thoroughly depressed you, I’ll finally get to the point.
Love while you can. Time isn’t guaranteed.
That is true for all the people and animals in your life. They are there for a reason but it’s easy to let that reason be obscured by work and the hurly-burly pace of your world. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the minutiae of each day, to let our phones ring and sing and vibrate our attention away. Open your computer and there’s a universe of distractions to get sucked into for hours at a time while the heartbeats around you wait for you to see them, hear them, wait for you to look up and just BE with them.
For me, the wonderful phrase in the movie Avatar, “I see you”, says it best. So instead of a single word to help me focus during 2020, I’ll use the phrase, “I’m with you.”
I’m with you each and every day.
I’m with you through the laughter.
I’m with you through the pain.
I’m with you to the end.
Be present. Be with. Be.
That is what we will do for Roo. That is what we will do for each other as we shepherd him through his last days. That is what we will do this year and the next and the next.
That is what I wish for you and your loved ones in 2020 and beyond.
May your words flow freely,
Artemis

Happy 2020
Happy New Year! Gosh, it shouldn’t surprise me that another year has flown by as I’m always talking about how fast time goes and how I feel I can almost never catch up. And this time around I feel caught off guard because I’ve had so little time, I don’t feel like I’ve planned well for the coming year as to what I want to accomplish.
I know, I’m sounding a bit compulsive on the planning side here but with how fast life flies, I literally feel as if I could blink my eyes and see decades pass without much happening. I’m by no means old but I’m definitely at an age where I’m questioning what I can contribute to and what I want to contribute to. Time is more meaningful now and I want to spend it doing something that is important to me, not wasting away checking boxes off a list. I want to experience life to the best of my ability – I know none of us know just how long we have—and I want to teach my kids to be good people.
I know it is just another year, but have you thought about what you want to do? What you want to accomplish? Is there a way to make 2020 more meaningful for you and if so, what would that take? It isn’t a bad exercise to contemplate and who knows, you just might have great results.
In the meantime, have a wonderful New Year and happy writing!
