On Facebook, I’ve been posting the progress of the miniature rose bush on my desk. Here is how it looks now.
I’ve sent messages and emails to friends. I video chat with my grandchildren. They have more funny faces to put on than I do. I will have to find out what app they are using.

For The Love Of…Discovering The Writer In You

Maya Angelou is one of my favorite writers. The beauty of her poetry, the wisdom of her words speak to my heart as few others have. Perhaps I will never speak to others as she has to me, but I can take her words and clutch them to my heart as I write my stories in hopes they become transformative. So, borrowing Maya’s words (in bold), I want to write about discovering the writer in you.
With so many people in the country sheltering in place, you may find time on your hands. Have you ever desired to write a story? A poem? A memoir? Maya says:
There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.
If you have a story, why not write the outline, the story question that’s been stuck in your mind, coming to the fore occasionally, only to be jammed to the back again when home, work, family demands your time? Tell that untold story, or at least get the idea on paper for now so you can turn to it and show it a little love in the quiet times.
I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn.
Oh, boy, was this ever the case when I made the decision to write. So much to learn that I faltered a few times when my self-confidence tapped me on the shoulder and asked for a long time-out. Light at the end of the tunnel? Hah, that’s not just a saying. It felt very dauntingly real for months, even years as I studied craft and wrote two books that will never be released. But, one day, you will see the craft in the writing of your favorite authors. You’ll go, “Aha, that’s the inciting incident!”
We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
Let’s be perfectly frank here. Writing is hard. I know, I know. That’s one of those insufferable lines that people tell you, like “When it’s true love, you’ll just know.” Unfortunately, they were right about love, and I’m right about writing. Egads, there was so much to learn; I had no idea. That’s because the authors I loved were so good at writing, that it seemed seamless. I’ll be the first to admit, I actually told my husband, “I think I’ll write a book. It can’t be that hard.” Grimacing here. So trust me when I say, if you haven’t been writing, or have never written a book, gird your loins, there’s a lot to do and to learn to achieve the beauty and glory of your favorite authors. But you can do it!
If you’re always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.
I adore this quote so, so much, and it speaks to writing in a specific way…voice. Voice seems elusive, and it can take a while for you to find that unique way you have of telling a story. You will find it though and when you do, revel in it. Don’t try to write a passage exactly like another author. Each of us has a unique life experience, a unique way we see the people and things around us, a unique way that we interpret the social cues coming at us daily. Channel that uniqueness into your writing and you will be a long way toward becoming a writer that readers will recognize on the first page. Voice is to be celebrated!
You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.
Never more true than with writing. The more you write, the better you get at it. The Great American Novel is not going to spring out of you and onto the page without a lot of words before it. So write. Write poetry, short stories, micro-stories, novelettes, novellas. Write a sentence using refrigerator magnets, anything, just write. It will take time, it will take patience, so give yourself permission to suck, and I mean really suck at writing for a while. It will happen!
Whatever you want to do, if you want to be great at it, you have to love it and be able to make sacrifices for it.
You can’t force yourself to spend the time learning and writing if you don’t find something to love about it. It took me a while, but I grew to love it. Enough to carry me through the years it took to get better at writing and develop the world for my series. I’ve sacrificed time and money, I’ve sweated bullets over a whole group of scenes, only to delete them in the final editing. You have to be willing to put your ego aside, while at the same time, developing a thick skin when you finally release a book. And you must continue to do that with every book you put out.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.
There’s nothing I enjoy more than having a scene, a moment, steal my breath. As you write, strive for those moments in your stories. Take your own breath away, and you will surely steal that of your readers. Those moments are precious and lead me to Maya’s next saying that is so critical:
I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
For me, that is the ultimate goal in my writing. I want my readers to feelwhen they finish my books. When I read a book and go to review it, I delve less into the actual story, but how it made me feel. Isn’t that what a great story does? When you write the first draft, just get the story down. Don’t worry about perfection. That’s what the rewrites are for—finding the places where you can insert the scenes that will make your readers, laugh, cry, squirm (depending on your genre). Make it true to the story and characters, of course, but when it’s true your readers will feel it. A great way to know that you’ve succeeded even before the release of the book? The scene makes you feelevery time you read it!
If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities.
I think of all the measures of success I can envision, this is the big one for me. That I can take the seed of an idea, write it and touch people’s lives. I think that’s a goal for any artist. I know that Maya Angelou touched so many hearts and minds; I hope that by using her words to talk about writing, I have inspired you to give it a try. There’s little that feels as good as holding your book in your hands, making that first sale, getting your first rave review. So I encourage you to take that solitary fantasy, write it out, and transform a million realities!

Don’t Panic
Panic. If I could use one word to sum up a theme for the world over the past couple weeks, this would be the word. And of course my day job just happens to be I the Financial industry so there is no shortage of panic there either. I don’t want to belittle this latest coronavirus as I do see it as an issue, we, the world, need to take seriously, but I also realize we cannot control every possible variable.
I am a planner by nature. In fact, one of the only things I find it difficult to plan is my writing. I like control and I like contingency plans. I also know when I simply have to let go. I know we can prepare as best as possible in many situations but even then, we may miss something. As such, I am amazed to see how illogical some of the reactions are to this recent outbreak. From the evidence thus far, this virus is not the end of the world. Will it have some impact globally? Absolutely. But that doesn’t mean we need to cash out our life savings ( just think of how much you are losing to tax impact based on a couple weeks of speculation and no hard and true numbers) and it doesn’t mean we walk into our nearby Walmart and buy up there entire supply of disinfectant spray (true story that happened near me).
Moral of the story? We are an intelligent species and sometimes we need to let logic rule emotions—this being one of those times. Sure, build a bit if a cash cushion until the chaos blows over, especially if you are concerned about economic impact. Buy a few cleaning products, keep your hands out of your eyes, nose and mouth and when all else fails, wash your hands!

A Coronavirus Distraction: Hair? By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Coronavirus has changed so many lives. I truly hope it ends soon. I wish they would start putting up how many have recovered.
I was fortunate that my chemo for breast cancer ended before the coronavirus began. Right now my appointments are far apart. One of the things that might happen to a cancer patient, depending on which IV chemo drugs the doctors choose for the best possible treatment, is the loss of hair.
Just for fun. I’m giving you a pictorial view of my journey from hair, to no hair, then hair again.

There is me at a book signing at Priam Vineyards with my friend, Kim who has glorious pink hair. I had very long hair. It always went out of the picture. Actually, I’ve had long hair most of my life. On Dec. 24, 2018, I found the lump that would start the cancer journey.
My dearest friends and I discussed how traumatic losing my hair could be. In talking to my hairstylist Anne Laro at Hair Unique Salon we decided to cut it in half and then when it fell out more to buzz it. This was Feb. 2018.

I opted instead for wigs and scarfs. Above is the initial haircut. A week later this hair had fallen out. Completely gone. I didn’t take pictures of the buzz or the baldness. It was too demoralizing for me. I know some women embrace their baldness. I didn’t, and that’s okay too. It is okay to feel what you feel.

That was my first wig. It was given to me by an organization. I missed my long hair. This was April 2019 and one of the few times my white cell count was good enough that my doctor gave me the all-clear to see my grandkids. Most of the time I couldn’t see them due to a compromised immune system.

This is August 2019 a few days before surgery. I’m wearing my long wig. I was a little unsure of it staying in place, so I added my hippie headband. Here I’m at the Lions Lebanon Fair with the family.
August 12 – Single Mastectomy
In late August, I started to get very soft peach fuzz on my head. Some cancer drugs target fast-growing cells like cancer. Unfortunately, hair cells replicate fast too, that accounts for the hair loss.
It seemed to me that to grow hair back took a really long time. Laughs.

Here I am in October 2019 at the Fall in Love with New Hampshire Readers/Authors Conference. That link will take you to the Oct. 2020 conference. Reader registration is open. See how short my hair was. I started wearing a scarf but the first full day of the conference decided what the heck.

Here I am self-isolating in March 2020. That’s my hair so far. Every day it grows a tiny bit more and then sticks up strangely. Some days I feel like a Troll doll with my hair straight up. My eyebrows are still in process. Laughs.
It is a blessing to be alive!
Dear Readers,
Please, stay safe at home, if you can. Wash your hands. I still have a compromised immune system at times so if I have to go out, I wear a mask and gloves. I use the bank and drug store drive-throughs. I shop with a list at the supermarket and don’t get distracted. I keep my distance from people and leave as soon as possible. I know this is a horrible time for the world. Our heroes are out there providing medical, transportation, financial services, and groceries at great personal risk. Thank you, each and every one of you.
Today because we are all scared and worn out from watching the news on coronavirus. I hope to bring a distraction and a smile by telling you my hair story.

A Little Fun in the Times of Coronavirus By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I hope Dragon’s Lair Comics and Fantasy doesn’t mind me sharing their poster. They are superb as I’ve bought things from them in the past at conventions. It demonstrates a lot of happy ways to say hi and keeping your social distance.
More on the fun that is happening without people realizing it! It’s fun, light-hearted, and is lowering anxiety for at least 15 thousand people so far. It is the biggest science fiction/fantasy/cosplay/horror/steampunk con (short for convention) on Earth, and it’s all happening in a Facebook group. You just go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/concellation/ and join. You might want to scroll down and see what people are doing. Feel free to add your comment. You can even post on a topic and start a thread of discussion. It’s hilarious. Do try to stay out of the way of the penguins that keep showing up.
I try to spend some time every day at this fun convention. It makes me feel better somehow.

For the Love of…Kindness in the Time of Covid-19

I was going to continue my writing resources series of posts, but I can pick that up next time. Today I want to address what we’re all talking about, thinking about. Covid-19
We have entered unique and scary times, but there are things we can do to help mitigate the fear; for ourselves, for our families, and for the strangers we encounter as we seek to weather this storm of indeterminate length. I suggest that we keep our minds and hearts looking to kindness as the answer.
Be Kind to Your Mind
Fear, and the unknown that can generate it, are crippling. It’s easy to get your mind bogged down in “what ifs” that lead to fear then lead to panic until all you can think about is worse case scenarios until you’re paralyzed. So what to do?
Exercise Your Mind With Reading
This is a great time to load up your e-reader and let yourself enter the worlds awaiting you. So many of my writer friends are putting their ebooks on sale; buy them up and read the funny, sweet, sexy, fantastical, out-of-this-world stories available.
FYI: Lyon’s Roar Kindle is on sale for .99 right now, and I’m probably going to reduce the whole series to .99 per book while we all deal with this.

Exercise Your Mind With Games, Puzzles
Crossword, Sudoku, Mai-Jong. Whatever your predilection, brain-teasers are a fantastic way to work your mind and take a break from the news. Are your children home from school? There are so many games and crafts you can do with them, so many can be found online if your brain is exhausted from the NYT crossword puzzle you no undoubtedly did in record time, in ink. Right?

Be Kind To Your Body
As the stress builds, our bodies suffer. Self-care becomes critical.
Exercise Good Eating
Eating healthy will be one of the several defenses you can erect against the stress and potential exposure to Covid-19. Fruits and vegetables may be easily perishable, but most can be frozen and stored. If you’re struggling to find fresh, consider starting your own garden to provide the fresh food you and your family need. If you grow more than you need, share with a food bank or your neighbors. If gardening isn’t your thing, find local farmers, either through a farmer’s market (if they’re still holding them) or just pick up the computer and search them out.

If you’re having trouble buying meat, there are many non-meat sources of protein. You can research vegetarian or vegan websites to learn more about it.
Exercise Your Body
Can’t hit the gym? Many facilities have online classes starting up. Missing yoga? You can find subscriptions to yoga classes online or through your television. Have a bicycle? Hit the road and get that heart rate up while enjoying the coming spring. You can take your whole family on a walk through your neighborhood, on a walking trail, on a treadmill. Whatever you do, keep moving!

Exercise Your Pet
Ideally, you can play with your dog/s in your yard, or take them on your walk, but if the weather isn’t cooperating or the dog park is closed, there are so many brain games you can play with your dog/s. My favorite is “Find It”. I ask my dog to sit and stay while I go hide a toy or a treat (whatever gets your dog/s fired up the most). Then ask them to find it and celebrate when they do. If that’s no fun, there are a ton of games you can find online. Be Kind To Everyone You Encounter
Smile and Say Thank You
Of all the things you can do, being kind to those people you do encounter is most important. People are worried, people are scared; about their health and the health of their loved ones, about their jobs, and if they can pay their bills. Essential personnel like the folks at your grocery store, the pharmacist, doctors and nurses, your veterinarian; they are slammed. They have the same personal concerns you do, but they have to risk getting sick to meet our needs.
Your family members, your children, are facing a new unknown and a new routine. While I’m not advocating you be a Pollyanna, we need to find joy in the little things and share that with the world. I was able to get some toilet paper today. That was a joyous moment that I shared with everyone I passed in the big box store today. Every employee I saw, I gave them a big smile and said “thank you for being here”. The cashiers smiled back and thanked me for being kind and acknowledging the chaos they’re contending with every day.
So take the time to smile. Take the time to thank all of the people keeping the doors open and the lights on so we can get food and household items and dog food.

The Leprechaun Paranormal-Scope

Do you believe in four-leaf clovers? I thought they were imaginary until a woman I met gave me a jar of freshly cut four-leaf clovers. I gave half to a friend who also had never believed, and the other half I pressed in a book. I didn’t want to forget that something I thought to be part of a myth was actually real.
So I ask you, do you believe in leprechauns?
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

Leprechauns were believed to be small men who were shoemakers. They were paid in gold for their fine footwear. Consider going through your footwear, tossing some, and buying some new.
Taurus:
Leprechauns are thought to have a pot of gold. However those that find it, can’t seem to keep it. It disappears that fast. Beware of any new financial opportunities. If it’s too good to be true, it usually is.
Gemini:
Have you always wanted a wine cellar? Put off that dream until summer. Otherwise a leprechaun might find it and drink your prize collection dry.
Cancer:
If you catch a leprechaun, hold on tight. You get 3 wishes. Please, wish wisely.
Leo:
If you hear tap-tap-tap, a leprechaun may be near. This is your lucky week. Not all week, mind you, but enough.
Virgo:
Never chase a leprechaun, you could come to harm. The tale says that a man chasing a leprechaun jumped over the same wall but into an open grave. Be careful in movements this week.
Libra:
Leprechauns don’t always wear green. Sometimes they wear red. Wear green this week with pride, and good luck will smile on you.
Scorpio:
Some say that leprechauns become drunk and disorderly with too much partying. Remember to do everything in moderation. You have a good rep to protect. Too much of anything won’t help.
Sagittarius:
Leprechauns are dancing fools. They love to dance. No wonder they can walk for miles and whistle a happy tune.
Capricorn:
Leprechauns are the bankers of the faery and elven world. Not all the pots at the end of the rainbows belong to them. It’s time to review your accounts and save more.
Aquarius:
The Leprechauns of Carlingford in Ireland are a protected species under directive or the European Union. When the coronavirus dies down, it may be fun to travel to Ireland.
Pisces:
Leprechauns can be rude. Ignore those that are rude to you and others. Your luck is improving.

Love in the Time of Coronavirus By Susan Hanniford Crowley

When you love others, choices have to be made. Both myself and my husband are considered at-risk so what does that mean? We go out and get supplies, and then it is lockdown for us. We won’t go anywhere except maybe to a doctor’s appointment for weeks.
It means no visiting or visitors. I will miss seeing my grandchildren. They are very tech-savvy and will send videos and photos. My friends will too.
Not being sick at the moment other than the usual chemo side effects, it is time to write books, watch movies, and try to tidy my house. Okay, I’ll write books. Laughs.
