A Japanese Paranormal-Scope

Japan has a wealth of paranormal creatures. I was amazed by the immense list. Visit with us a while and find out what goes bump in the night in Japan.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

Aries:

The Kitsune is a shapeshifter often appearing as a fox. They can be faithful guardians, but others say they can not be trusted. Get to know a new friend better before sharing secrets.

Taurus:

The Chochin Obake is a lantern ghost, who will roll eyes and laugh in order to scare others, but his eyes are sad. Someone you know may be hiding that they are sad.

Gemini:

The Jorogumo is a seductive woman who is really a spider and lures young men to their deaths. Just because something looks beautiful doesn’t always mean it is. Practice caution with people and deals that look too good.

Cancer:

The Kapa which sort of looks like a turtle but human-sized has a cucumber sushi roll named for him. He loves cucumbers and human intestines, so don’t go into the water alone.

Leo:

The Aka Manta is a masked red-caped ghost. He appears in public restrooms and asks if you would like red or blue toilet paper. Always say, “No, thank,” and run like heck out of there. Remember to be polite to others to avoid trouble.

Virgo:

The Amabie is a mermaid with three legs, which rises from the ocean to make predictions of an abundant harvest or epidemic. Be safe when going to the lake or ocean.

Libra:

The Ameonna is a creature that calls forth rain. Watch your forecasts before going out.

Scorpio:

Children in Japan call out to the strange creature Baku to come and eat my nightmares. Be kind to yourself. Do something good for yourself every day.

Sagittarius:

Chōchinbi is a ghost light that can appear on the walkways between rice fields. Fleeing it is one thing but overreacting and striking it will get you in trouble.  Keep your emotions in check this week.

Capricorn:

The Hibagon is a gorilla-like black creature with white hands and feet. It resides around Mount Hiba. He flees the company of humans. Enjoy some solitude. Read. Take a bubble bath.

Aquarius:

Issie is a lake monster that lives in Lake Ikeda. Go out and enjoy nature but remember social distancing.

Pisces:

Komainu are lionlike dogs that guard homes and temples. You are protected in many ways, but checking locks is always a good thing.

This was only a small glimpse into the strange creature that inhabits the mythology and storytelling tradition of Japan.

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Worth battling minus temperatures and icy wind to witness.”

I continue to dream about Iceland. That means a book. It helps that I’ve been there and have a deep longing to go back. Their mythology is rich with paranormal beings and an enticing dramatic landscape. I’ve seen the Northern Lights in Canada but would love to visit Iceland during the time of year where I can see them there as well.

To get further into the mood, I’ve been watching a detective series called “The Cliff.” It pulls you in like a good ghost story making it very different from the detective tales I’m used to. “The Cliff” is set and filmed in Iceland having been produced by Nordic TV. The language they’re speaking is Icelandic but it’s subtitled in English. It’s available on PBS Masterpiece.

A Stormy Weather Paranormal-Scope

Mermaids are swimming deep. This is a good time for reflection on your life. Focus on the things that gave you happiness.

Cancer:

Werewolves are a delight unless they’re shaking off the rain. The home needed some rearranging anyway.

Leo:

Nessie rises from the lock to stare at the people running from the rain. She laughs. Watch some funny movies to get in a good mood.

Virgo:

Shapeshifters have the wildest parties. They keep changing form to the beat of the music. Time to add to your music collection.

Libra:

Dragons love flying in the rain. Do you want to fly with them? You will receive an unexpected gift. It may not be obvious.

Scorpio:

Faeries are hiding under leaves to avoid the lightning. They have taken up the hobby of painting flowers, literarily. Indulge in a new hobby or one rediscovered.

Sagittarius:

Ghosts are moaning, but otherwise not saying much. Why not watch a ghostly movie and make popcorn.

Capricorn:

Elves are studying ancient tomes and recording their history to the dawn of time. History, where of the world or personal, can be a fun hobby.

Aquarius:

Big Foot walks barefoot because he can’t find his size shoes. Looks at the shoes in your closet and throw out the worn-out and consider how you want to replace them.

Pisces:

Pixies are diabolical. They love whispering in people’s ears as they sleep. So if you’re having weird dreams, chalk it up to your friendly-house pixie. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

For The Love Of…Listening

This will not be a long post, and the most important words will not be my own. They belong to others. I do this because we as a nation are experiencing a collective upheaval and there is one truth I think we needed to be reminded of.

We need to listen.

Humans love to talk; goodness knows I do. We communicate at the world through social media all day long, but it seems too often we don’t stop and listen to what’s being said. Instead, we are waiting and formulating a response that we immediately spit out the moment the other person takes a breath.

There is a lot of fear and pain and rage hitting us in wave after wave and there hasn’t been time to take a breath. The stress builds until we stop listening completely with an open mind and heart, and instead get defensive and employ what-about-isms to protect ourselves from truths too difficult to face. Especially those truths about ourselves.

We are not listening to one another. We are blindly defending what we believe, and who we think we are, and letting our egos rule our responses without the benefit of self-reflection, or often without even trying to understand the lives of those desperate for us to hear them.

I have challenged myself to go forward and listen deeply with love in my heart so that I may go beyond myself and have a meaningful, impactful relationship with all those I meet.

I hope you do the same.

Dreaming of Iceland Paranormal-Scope

The Yule Lads are pranksters and thieves. Take precautions and lock up your home and car.

The golden Vatnagedda has the appearance of half-pike, half furry flounder. It is poisonous to eat. Not everything that’s golden is good for you.

Dragons love great ice caves. Keep cool with fruit and cold drinks. Don’t overexert yourself in the sun.

Pisces:

The Icelandic Draugur (vampire but also translated as a ghost). To be pulled into the grave by a draugur makes the victim a draugur too. Don’t be pulled into any negativity from the past. It isn’t worth it.

The Garden Around Me By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I am one of those people who are still self-quarantined. Medical conditions put me on the Covid-19 hit list, so I do the best I can with daily tasks, and I write. My oldest daughter has filled my world with flowers.  Above are Lilacs.

This week the Lilac bush that was planted last year bloomed. I was very surprised and delighted.

Chives have flowers. I didn’t know that.

The Azaleas were all planted by my husband years ago.

The Rhododendrons are slow to bloom, especially the huge one in the yard. The ones near the house are started. This is the closest bloom I could find. It is taking its time to full bloom. Perhaps it’s waiting for everyone else to catch up. Did you know that it is Nepal’s national flower?

Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance in the United States of America. On this day, we remember the men and women who have fought and died in wars defending America’s freedom.

Years ago, my husband bought this sundial for me. It says, “Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.”  Change is coming, and we are all adjusting to get ready.

Elves spent time reading their ancient books, so they can pass the knowledge on to the small ones. Enjoy some good books.

Pixies are drinking tea. They have a tea ceremony but staying 6 feet away from each other. Remember to social distance.

Gemini:

Faeries are dancing deep in the woods, where no one can see. Solitude can be relaxing. Don’t stress. Relaxing is a gift you give yourself.

Cancer:

Mermaids are diving deep they swim to a ship and lay a wreath of seaweed and shells. Remember and honor those that fought and died on your behalf.

Leo:

Vampires are keeping to the shadows. Wearing a mask, no one will notice they are vampires. Another benefit of wearing a mask.

Virgo:

Werewolves enjoy sitting with the family and watching war movies all day. Tears flow but that is okay to honor our war dead and remember freedom comes at a cost.

Libra:

Shapeshifters take up walking miles. The air is warm and sweet and you can indulge in the art of deep thinking.

Scorpio:

Shapeshifters know they have to adapt to the changing world. Make a list of all your favorite things and how you can modify them to work now.

Sagittarius:

The Phoenix soars singing. Listen to some music today.

Capricorn:

Aslan walks the land. A new strength is growing. Open your eyes to what is happening around you. Keep a journal about your life and thoughts.

Aquarius:

Dragons fly high. They remember all the wars, as they live a long time. One engraves a stone with fire for a fallen comrade. A moment of silence can be observed today.

Pisces:

An angel lands near your home. You can feel it in the fresh air and the light. You’ve been given a gift. Use it.

Who is Behind the Mask?

While we try to protect ourselves and others with a mask,

and when appropriate also with gloves,

we all have been learning wonderful things.

Some embraced the masks, so much so that they made them for others.

They kept themselves safe and also thought beyond

to each person wearing a mask, to the heart beneath.

Some closed their eyes to talk to God, to reach as deep as Soul,

like leaping into a wonderful deep pool of golden light.

They did this for themselves and their family, not realizing

one gift from God benefits many.

Some worked tirelessly to care for the sick,

while others cleaned attempting to vanquish the hidden enemy of life.

The doctors, nurses, and all their staff won’t give up,

and neither should we.

Workers at all the necessary industries across the world

labored for themselves, their families,

and others they may never meet.

Aiding others to stay alive can’t be measured.

Whether we are working a job,

or are at home, we are more than we’ve ever been.

Taking online classes, taking care of family members,

playing with pets and children, teaching, reading,

gardening, knitting, crocheting, sewing,

creating art, singing songs, writing books,

reflecting on life, nature, and God …

At this moment, we are more!

When the time comes to give up the mask,

what will we be then?

The force that challenged and changed us creates a new world,

but how we live in it will be our invention.

Who is behind the mask?

Who will emerge when the masks are taken off?

Will we be ready for the challenges of a New World?
