For the Love of…Writing Resources, Part 1

I am a serious book nerd. There, I said it. Whew, it’s good to have that out in the ether.

I have hundreds of fiction paperbacks in all kinds of genres. I probably have a hundred reference books about writing, encyclopedias about the spiritual world, mythology, and on and on. There’s a room in my basement filled to the brim, cabinets are nearly overflowing, plus every built-in in the house has books that belonged to my paternal grandmother. Even her complete set of Jane Austen books, such a treasure.

If you’re a writer, you have your special list of resources; books, articles, notes taken at a conference, an online class. We all do. What surprised me recently was some of my top go-to resources were unknown to two of my writer friends.

What? What?

So, I decided to write posts about resources I’ve used to help me write the Zodiac Assassins series books. I won’t overwhelm you, thus the part 1. All of these resources have equal weight with me, for varying reasons. As I go through these, I hope you’ll take a look for yourself. Perhaps one or more will help you as much, or more, than me.

Here we go!

Fav Resource for Creating Character Arcs

If, like me, you struggle to structure an organic character arc from beginning to ending, this book has been a life and story saver. It keeps me on track when I’m tempted to go off on a tangent that veers away from who my character is.

Fav Book That Inspired The Zodiac Assassins

Born on a Rotten Day by Hazel Dixon-Cooper

A hilarious take on the zodiac signs. After reading it, I applied the wonderful question from the TV series Leverage, “Sometime the bad guys are the only good guys you get”, to my series. So much fun!

Fav Online Class

Discovering Story Magic

DSM and its offshoot, Turning Points, is a wonderful method of ferreting out the plot outline of your story, as well as getting to the truth of your protagonist, antagonist and villain. Laura teaches a limited number of classes through Writer University, but you can buy the lesson packets from her at:

My next post will continue this dive into resources that inspire me, educate me, and generate questions that help me create. I hope these books and classes help you, but not all of them will. Check them out, but please use what will truly help you and discard the rest. Until part 2…

May your words flow freely,

Artemis
