Focus is Key

Life has been dizzying of late and I don’t think it is going to get any better. It is the speed at which many of us live and it just doesn’t slow. I remember when my oldest was younger and we spent many hours talking about his ability to focus. We tried lists, repetition, alarms, talked to doctors, etc. Today we are still working on this but my son has somewhat improved on his own.

When we got our family dog, it again became all about focus. Training him to listen and sit when told, come when called, or not to jump on visitors.

These days, with so much going on in the world, I’m finding it harder and harder Tryto focus on my day to day work. At times work seems trivial even if I know it isn’t. It is easy to lose track and feel purposeless, but that’s not the case. It is a matter of being mindful and purposeful with our attention.

How do we do this? Spend some time exercising, enjoy the fresh air as the weather starts to warm, carve out time for yourselves and spend it doing something else besides playing on your phone. Try to live a slower and more intentional life. It isn’t always easy, but it is worth it.

Happy writing this week!

Funny Paranormals Paranormal-Scope

If you listen closely, paranormal creatures say the funniest or weirdest things.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:
The were-crow caws, “Give me bling!” Get that bird out of her. Watch your budget this week. You may need to adjust for an unexpected cost like a repair.

Taurus:
The vampire knows you’re only as old as you feel. They are always after fresh blood. A new friend is right around the corner. Don’t get cozy too quickly. Could be a vamp!

Gemini:
What happens if you give a dragon a cookie? They want the whole box. Then they have heartburn! Try to moderate what you eat this week. Delicious doesn’t mean more.

Cancer:
What game does a ghost enjoy playing? Hide and Shriek! Get together with your close ones and plan a game night.

Leo:
What do you call two witches that share a home? Broom-mates! Okay, you’ve got me on that one, but it is Spring Cleaning time so grab that broom.

Virgo:
Who did the monster take to the party? His ghoul-friend. I bet that monster even opened the door for her. You have an opportunity to social climb, be considered of

Libra
What do sirens eat with their lunch? Potato ships! An unhealthy lunch is not advisable. You have many good things to do this week.

Scorpio:
What does a baby zombie want for his birthday? A deady bear! Do you have a person who is hard to buy for? Money is a good option. A deady bear? Not!

Sagittarius:
What do mummies enjoy dancing to? Wrap music. Why not invest in some new music for your collection!

Capricorn:
What did the Indomitable Snowman and the Vampiress call their baby? Frostbite! Collaborate at work if you can and think outside the box for new ideas.

Aquarius:
What would a skeleton order in a restaurant? Spare ribs! Consider getting some take-out to enjoy at home.

Pisces:
What do baby ghosts wear on their feet? Booties! Time to look at your shoes. Worn out. Throw them out and get new ones.

In my defense, I wrote this while being sick. Thank you for your good humor and stay safe.

Writing Tools: Life of A Pantser By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Book 1, in the Young Supernaturals of New York Series. Vampires, werewolves, oh my!

I write books out of my dream journal. So I’m a pantser, which means I write by the seat of my pants.

But I was thinking a while back that maybe I would take a page from the plotters. They write an outline and then copious notes for each chapter. Then they write the book. I have been to numerous workshops and talks on writing in this fashion.

So I tried it. I am currently writing EverNight, Book 2 in the Young Supernaturals of New York. I wrote out a series of index cards for my outline of what happens chapter by chapter.

Now, remember I dream my books. I thought I had everything nailed down because I had an outline and descriptions on each chapter as well as on each character.

My dreams begged to differ. One dream actually ruined the outline with a whole different view on the action. Two new characters also showed up in the book. Things I hadn’t expected to happen, transpired. Too much changed from the outline. Too much was unexpected.

What does that mean? It means my characters are in control, and I’m back to taking chapters out of my dream journal. Do I know how it will end? I do. Do I know how they get to the end? I finally do but dare not make another outline in case the dreams change again.

If you’re on the fence whether you are a plotter or a pantser, try them both. Then be true to yourself! There’s no one way to write a book.

All the best for a fun day!

Truly,

Springtime Blues?

This is usually a time of year that I love. Spring is full of new beginnings and of course there is Spring Break for vacation and the air is warming. People are looking forward to getting out and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Somehow this year feels different. With so much going on in the world it’s hard to pinpoint just why. I mean after all we have spent the last two years in a global pandemic which hasn’t completely disappeared. There is a history making, world changing war going on in Ukraine and let’s not forget about climate change because anybody who tells me all of this crazy weather is a fluke has to be insane. Oh and of course we are dealing with the terrible inflation (not being sarcastic here, these pricing increases are serious business).

Needless to say, I sound and feel like I am in a funk. I realize it doesn’t help me to wallow too long and I know it won’t last forever. and I guess this is my way of telling myself that it is OK to be in a funk. it is OK to not be happy with everything going on around us. And it is okay to seek a way out of this funk when ready. it is all about processing.

Happy writing this week!

An Assorted Sundries Sunday By Susan Hanniford Crowley

My cat Buffy is watching as I write today. Actually, I think it has more to do with where the sunny spots are. She’s a big fan of sunny spots.

The world keeps changing and I’m writing like a maniac. The goal is to get four books done and publish three this year. The fourth in 2023.

An author of military science fiction I knew believed very strongly that a writer must write 24/7 and never take a break.

I believe that an author must live life in order to write. People are different and that’s okay.

Friday, I was at Mystic Seaport Museum with my sweetheart. He loves ships and so do I.

Not only is Mystic Seaport Museum, the Museum of America and the Sea in Mystic, Connecticut, it’s the largest maritime museum in the United States. They are also the experts in historical ship repair. I saw something amazing while there that was being worked on.

Here’s the link to the history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Amistad This slave ship Amistad was captured and towed to New London, Connecticut. The rest is history. Like I said, they were repairing the ship so no one can go on it.

The other ship I saw under wraps for repairs was the Viking long ship, Draken. It’s going to take a while.

The whaling ship Charles W. Morgan is open to visitors.

*

I’m back to working on my next book after writing to you. My many books are listed below. Enjoy reading, life, and be safe out there!

For The Love Of…St. Patrick’s Day by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

I found this interesting list of facts about St. Patrick’s Day on World Strides! https://worldstrides.com/blog/2017/03/9-interesting-st-patricks-day-facts/

9 Interesting St. Patrick’s Day Facts

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Every March 17, countries around the world celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in observance of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland credited for bringing Christianity to the country. Initially a religious feast day in the 17th century, St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a day of celebrating Irish culture with parades, music, dancing, special foods, and of course, a lot of green.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, here are a few interesting St. Patrick’s Day facts!

Saint Patrick didn’t wear green. His color was “Saint Patrick’s blue.” The color green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day after it was linked to the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century.Despite his Irish notoriety, Saint Patrick was British. He was born to Roman parents in Scotland or Wales in the late fourth century.According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he was first introducing Christianity to Ireland.Saint Patrick is credited for driving the snakes out of Ireland, but according to the fossil record, Ireland has never been home to snakes as it was too cold to host reptiles during the Ice Age. The surrounding seas have kept snakes out since. There isn’t any corn in the traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal of corned beef and cabbage. The name is a reference to the large grains of salt historically used to cure meats, which were also known as “corns.”Saint Patrick was born “Maewyn Succat” but changed his name to “Patricius” after becoming a priest.Irish immigrants began observing St. Patrick’s Day in Boston in 1737 and the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in America was held in NewYork City in 1766.In Chicago, the Plumbers Local 110 union dyes the river Kelly green. The dye lasts for around five hours. On or around St. Patrick’s Day, the Irish taoiseach, or prime minister, presents the U.S. president with a crystal bowl of live shamrocks as a symbol of the close ties between the two countries.

Have a great and festive holiday everyone!

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

Find Our Voices

As we all go through our daily lives, it is easy to feel like you live in this monotonous routine. At times, we catch ourselves spacing out or losing track within a day. I speak from personal experience but I also see it happening in those all around me. It is a blah place to be – almost like one has lost their passion completely. Strangely, it seems to take big moments for us to find our voices.

this has been the case lately with the war in Ukraine. I’ve read tons of articles lately, seen graphic pictures and videos and heard terrified clips from those experiencing the trauma of war. These articles and videos and photo carry a message and it’s almost as if the emotion of the moment being captured is pulling us in. It is heartbreaking to say the least but it also highlights the power we can each have.

This passion to write and speak from experience happened with Covid as well. It is as if these experiences force us to leave the monotony behind. They force us to wake up and find our voice, to stand up for something we believe in. While the subjects are not always beautiful, the passion filled voices pulling us toward cause are. They are because they show we are alive and that we are living for a reason that we support and believe in.

Happy writing this week and for those speaking out for freedom, don’t give up!

Creatures of the Night Paranormal-Scope

[image error] Photo Courtesy by Josep Castells on Unsplash

Creatures of the night fill the nightmares of humanity. If you are afraid of the dark, there may be a reason. Otherwise, remember what J.K. Rowling said in her book, ““Happiness can be found in even the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” -Albus Dumbledore”

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:
A werewolf howls. There’s a lot of people howling out there. Don’t let it bring you down. Help where you can but continue with your life.

Taurus:
A Dullahan is a demonic faery that has lost his head and rides the night roads looking for those that owe a debt. This week go over your budget and see where you might be overspending.

Gemini:
The Rotting One likes to walk on dark stormy nights. It’s hungry. It’s best to stay in those nights and order delivery.

Cancer:
A lich is a powerful sorcerer who wanted immortality and became one of the undead. Having power is not all it’s cracked up to be, so take care what you wish for.

Leo:
The reaper is truly impartial, as they wait for someone to die and take them where they belong. Take care this week and try to remain neutral when people you know argue.

Virgo:
Oizys is the goddess of misery. There is one in every workplace. They always have endless tales of sadness that have befallen them. Maintain your balance. Be polite. Let them get it out.

Libra
Baba Yaga will help those that seek her guidance. But she has a duel nature and enslaves those lost in her woods. Not everyone is totally good. Be conscious of this.

Scorpio:
The Alp is a vampiric dream spirit that can shapeshift into a variety of animals. On the upside, it has to stay in the dream world. You can walk out. Being flexible will benefit you this week.

Sagittarius:
The Cereberus is the three-headed dog. He makes a great watch dog and loves music. Expand your music collection this week.

Capricorn:
A Golem is made from clay. Why not explore the arts this week and find something you would enjoy.

Aquarius:
The Loch Ness Monster enjoys quiet nights on the lake. Enjoy your evenings and if you get the chance to get out into nature this week, take it.

Pisces:
It is a fact that the Monster under the Bed is afraid of vaccums. Spring cleaning as arrived. Enjoy decluttering.

Thank you and stay safe.

If You Love An Author, Write A Review The Easy Way By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I found this list being passed around on Facebook. It originated from
the wonderful YA author Alethea Kontis aletheakonits.com

I’ve been asked how to write a review, and so I searched for the easiest way to do it. All you really need to know is listed above in the poster. It’s easy.

At the beginning of the review, if you were given the book by the author or publisher, all you need to say is one of the following: (Pick one of these three one-liners.)

I received a complimentary copy of this book for an objective review.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and chose to review it. This review is based on a complimentary book.

That’s all you need to write if you want to review a book!
