National Free Comic Book Day and More By Susan Hanniford Crowley

What’s coming up:
National Free Comic Book Day is this Sat., May 7th at participating stores. I love comics and graphic novels. I usually look for superheroines and vampires! This year I am looking for Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn, and what’s good in graphic novels. I get a free comic book or two but always I buy things too. I want my local comic bookstore to stay! Support your local Comic Bookstore!
AJ’s Comics, 167 Lebanon Ave, Colchester, CT is a great store if you’re looking in Eastern Connecticut. They really know their comics. They are participating in National Free Comic Book Day! That’s a photo of me standing in their store.
Sunday, May 8th is Mother’s Day! I’ve already received flowers. I love spending time with family most of all. There’s still time to get your mother, mother-in-law, or grandmother flowers a gift. The best gift is sharing time with them. A visit, going out together, a call, or video chat are all treasured.
Friday, May 13 is my day at the Facebook Group I Love Romance Books! I will be there from 10-5. Be sure to join me for fun and giveaways. You do have to join the group to participate but joining is easy and you can leave afterward. It is a group to consider keeping as they are so much fun.
Truly,

For The Love Of…May 5th Snippets by Artemis Crow

May 5th is commonly known as Cinco de Mayo (Mexican food is a real fav in our house), but there are other historical happenings on this day. In particular, on this day in 1973, Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby is an exciting finish. “Big Red” as he was called, then went on to win the Triple Crown.

May 5th also includes the zodiac sign Taurus. Here’s an unedited passage about Taurus from my August release, book 9 in my Zodiac Assassins series, Aries On Fire.
“Go find Allie and Georgie,” Libra said. “And thank you for everything you’ve done, especially staying when you were dying to leave.”
Taur stopped and turned around, returning to Libra. He stuck out a hand and they shook. “I’ve never been prouder of what we’ve become than now, Li. Thank you, brother, for what you do each day. I love you, man.” He pulled Libra into his chest and gave him a bone-crushing hug.
“If you really love me, don’t break my ribs,” Libra managed to squeak out.
Taur dropped him and laughed.
Libra staggered back and rubbed his aching ribs. Then he snorted and pointed to the compound. “Go.”
Taur whooped and ran all the way to his home. He showered quickly, a real sacrifice with his love of water, then dressed and grabbed his packed bag. He headed downstairs whistling a sea shanty then came up short when he saw Taryn’s face.
Crap, what fresh hell is this?
“Is Libra still at the caves?”
Taur looked from her to the front door, longing to slip past the woman and run away from her tears and to Allie. But Taryn was a quivering mess, and he couldn’t abandon her. He took her arm and steered her to the front door. “Come on, I’ll drive you to him.”
He helped her into his truck and ran around the front. He threw his duffle bag into the second-row seat, climbed into the driver’s seat and started the engine. A fresh spat of crying started; he glance at her uneasily before putting the truck in gear and driving. “Did someone die?”
Taryn’s face screwed up and she wailed.
Stupid wrong thing to say.
He zipped it and drove as fast as he dared down the gravel road that would take her to Libra. They quickly reached the base of the foothills and slid to a stop, Taur honking his horn, desperate to pass off the blubbering female.
Libra appeared, he saw Taryn in the passenger seat, and started running down the hill.
Damn, the man’s going to break his neck.
“Taryn,” Taur said, pointing out the front windshield.
“Ahhh,” she wailed even louder when she saw Libra.
Taur escaped the truck, shaking his hands to get rid of the heebie-jeebies. “Hurry, Libra,” he yelled, not caring at this point if the man broke something, as long as he got the incoherent woman out of his truck. Damn it, there was something about a crying woman that tore him up. Serious flaw, that.
May your words, and the margaritas, flow freely,
Artemis

Free Your Mind
I consider myself a very blessed person. I’ve a good job, a wonderful family and my health—at least so far. That doesn’t always mean life is a breeze. The job can be demanding, children are a lot if work but rewarding nonetheless, and like many folks these days, I try my best to manage life’s stress.
I spend a lot of time speaking with folks about their future and what they want out of life. Most of them want to speed forward to the part of life when they don’t have so much responsibility and stress. It’s a nice thought but we’d miss a lot along the way, not to mention we can’t just skip around life to the parts we like even if we knew when they would happen. Life doesn’t work that way.
Instead, with life, we take the good and the bad. And those of us who move forward learn how to cope and manage the bad to a point it is bearable. So lesson to learn here? Teach yourself to deal, learn to manage the stress and free your mind to enjoy the good. Happy writing this week!

Let’s Get Real Interview with Author Michelle Miles! By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Welcome to let’s get real with Author Michelle Miles today!
Susan: Tell us a little about you, your background, and what is fun about you!
Michelle: Hi! First, thanks for having me! I’m excited to be here.
A little about me: I write fantasy, paranormal and urban fantasy all with an action/adventure twist. I’ve been writing for a couple of decades and published since 2006. I love to write series, so you will see a lot of them from me.
After many years of trying to write to the market, trying to break into the big publishers, trying to stay published with smaller publishers, I decided to go full indie. I have been writing what I want and what I love for a few years now. I love the entire process from start to finish (creation to publication).
I’m married and have a college-age son and a black cat named Sir Dexter.
I think what’s fun about me is I can remember movie lines better than what I did yesterday and love quoting them!
Question: What are your favorite color, food, and music?
Color: BLUE!
Food: Mexican or steak and potatoes
MUSIC: I love classic rock!
Susan: Tell us about your book. Where does your book take place? Why did you choose that time and location?

Michelle: My current book (releasing May 31) is the fourth book in my Dream Walker urban fantasy series. It takes place in the near future, all over the world, and is about a relic hunter searching for Holy Relics while trying to fight demons. I LOVE this book and this series. I didn’t really pick the setting or time period; my main character did.
Book 4 is called Smoke and Ashes and follows Anna, my dream walking main character, through her quest to find the Holy Grail. She is hunted by a gang of vampires, threatened by Lucifer, and tormented by her unresolved feelings of the love interest.
You can read each of these books as a standalone, but you really get a better sense of the story if you read them in order.
Here is the blurb for SMOKE AND ASHES, Book 4 in the Dream Walker series:
Anna begins her quest for the Holy Grail, the most sacred of the Holy Relics promising eternal life.
But as with all divine pursuits, nothing is ever easy for her. Lucifer has a score to settle with her and sends every weapon in his malevolent arsenal to impede her. He demands Anna hand over the Relics, including the grail cup, if she wants her adopted mother to live. To make matters worse, vampiric religious zealots track Anna down insisting she return their property, and she is branded an international cultural thief, hunted by Interpol.
With enemies old and new hot on her trail, she must place her faith in Kincade, the one and only person who can keep her out of the dark lord’s hands. Their quest forces the two of them to acknowledge the long-burning desire smoldering between them.
Kincade must use every power within him to keep her soul from Lucifer’s control. He enlists the help of an unlikely ally—a dream walker with the gift of foresight and divine power. But will it be enough to keep Anna alive or will she be lost to him forever?
Susan: What makes your hero/heroine fascinating so we can’t put the book down? Spoilers are not allowed.
Michelle: Anna is the main character. Kincade is the love interest that has been with her since book 1, almost page 1.
Anna is such a fun character to write. She tends to make bad decisions, but her heart is in the right place. Plus, she’s a bit of a mess. She’s sarcastic and cusses a lot. She has a lot of inner conflicts she has to overcome to become who she truly is. She’s faced a lot of loss, dealt with grief, and yet she still picks herself up and keeps going. She has a deep connection to Kincade, though she doesn’t know why or how, and yet rolls with it. She will put her life on the line for her friends; she will do whatever it takes to keep the people she loves safe and out of harm’s way. Sometimes she succeeds at that. Sometimes she doesn’t and she has to deal with the consequences of her choices.
I wrote Anna’s character arc knowing where I wanted to go from Book 1 to Book 5: from orphan and nothing to savior of mankind. She has really grown over the series.
Susan: What do you love most about your book? What was the toughest part?
Michelle: The part I love AND the toughest part is writing all the locations and figuring out her quests, the twists and turns for each book, where she will find the hidden relic. It involves a lot of research—geography, history, and archeology. It’s hard, because I want to make sure I get the details right but also not bombard the reader with too many details, info dump, or be preachy when it comes to the Christian overtones.
Susan: Please, share a two-paragraph sneak peek.
Michelle: I’ll share the opening paragraphs of the book. It will give you a sense of who Anna is.
I am not a particularly elegant person. I’m a mess on a good day. I’ve walked around in clothes soaked in black demon blood smelling like a sewer and looking like something the cat dragged in off the back porch. I’ve had blood crusted under my fingernails and never blinked an eyelash. I’ve been to Hell and back—literally. I’ve killed more demons with my jade-handled dagger than I can count.
The fact I was at a glitzy gala in Spain dressed in an elegant ball gown and upper length satin gloves with my black hair done in a fancy chignon and makeup on my face, well, it made me question a lot of things about my life.
Susan: Why did you write your book?
Michelle: This is a great question! I felt I had a calling to write this book. I got the idea in one flash one day. When the book first came to me—actually the character of Anna showed up and demanded attention—I wasn’t sure I could pull it off. I knew it would be a difficult series to write, and I wasn’t wrong. But the idea, and Anna, would not leave me alone. So, I wrote the first draft of the first book in a journal. I think I rewrote that book a dozen times before it finally felt right to me. I wouldn’t say this is the book of my heart, but I will say this is a series that I felt I needed to write.
Susan: What do you love to do when you’re not writing?
Michelle: Nothing. LOL! Seriously, though, I run an Etsy shop as well as write journals under a different pen name. I watch a lot of hockey during the winter and baseball during the spring/summer. Mostly, though, I don’t watch a lot of TV unless there is a show I can’t live without. I’m currently loving Picard on Paramount+. I also like to read when I have time.
Susan: What is next for you in writing? Sequel? Different book? Research? Traveling?
Michelle: My next book will be the final one in the Dream Walker series, but I am also planning a new 8-book series that will be fairy tales and other story retellings. I’m super excited about that series and cannot wait to get started.
Susan: What is your favorite line in the book?
Michelle: Great question! There are so many… hard to pick just one! Here it is: “Our destinies lie within our own hands, Ronan. Not visions or prophecies.”
Susan: Where can we find out more about your books?

The Super Power of Reading
I’ve always been a reader, always a learner. I love it because there always seems more to learn and do—it makes life more interesting in my opinion. These days, it seems like we have to constantly read just to keep up. And not only read, but sift through our sources to determine if what we are reading holds any grain of truth. It can be exhausting, but it is also necessary to stay aware. Think of it like a super power.
My day job requires me to keep up-to-date on current events and know what is going on in the world on a variety of levels. This keeps me informed but in my conversations with those around me I begin to realize just how rigorous this piece is with our lives, not to mention our interests. We are all living lives, working jobs, taking care of loved ones, and just trying to make it to the next day. Sometimes the thought of keeping up with all of the events going on in the world is simply exhausting, overwhelming and depressing. That being said, it is also important for the well-being of our world.
So what is the point of all this? I’m not here to lecture anyone but I will say that each one of us contributes to our collective destiny. It doesn’t hurt to be well informed but it does hurt to be uninformed. Ignorance is not bliss for long.
Happy writing this week!
Sneaking Paranormals Paranormal-Scope
Some paranormals are just plain sneaky. It’s the nature of the vampire but did you know it’s a protocol for the were-prairie dog?
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
A Were-Prairie Dog once taught me that a home is where the hole is, as he had dug a hole outside the zoo gates and greeted visitors! Be flexible. If you change homes at this time, remember you make the home! Perhaps it’s just a change of decor that’s needed.
Taurus:
Mermaids sing in the spring as the storms come and go. They flow with the tide. Be flexible to change. Indulge in a small treat and keep your focus on your work.
Gemini:
Gnomes know when to talk it up. Collaborate. Lecture. Listen to the lectures of others. This is the time to learn as much as you can from colleagues.
Cancer:
Were-Bats love to network. Networking could get you further than you expect. Try it.
Leo:
Shapeshifters keep their relationships in good shape. In your leisure time, hang out with those close to you. Make soup.
Virgo:
Werewolves are one with nature. When at the job, show you’re worthy of a raise. On your own time, take a daycation somewhere with fresh air.
Libra
Goblins are all about finances. Try not to worry about but keep a close eye and investigate any large expense thoroughly.
Scorpio:
Were-Rabbits are all for exploring the moon and other strange things. But curiosity can cause trouble if you delve too far.
Sagittarius:
The Were-Opposum is misunderstood. Get past people misunderstanding you. Smile. Be charming. Listen to others. Be a friend.
Capricorn:
Pegasus spreads his wings and soars. This week is all about productivity for you. Your creative side will take charge and enlarge. Spread your wings!
Aquarius:
A Ghost crosses your path. Things from your past are coming to haunt you. Be prepared.
Pisces:
Since Vampires live such a long time, they take in the big picture but also cherish the details. Certain details will become important to you.
Thank you and be safe.

The Truth About Authorship By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hi Everyone,
I am going to tell you the bad news first, so strengthen yourself if you are an author or are an aspiring writer. Then I’ll give you the sunshine.
I was on Facebook the other day and saw an author despairing over her non-existent sales. Here are some awful truths, she may not know.
Writing a fiction book is hard work. Marketing that book is just as hard, harder if you don’t know how to market. What makes it tougher is that marketing is always in flux. Platforms change their rules and up their prices. What worked 10 years ago won’t work today. Studying marketing on a continuous basis ends up on being a side hobby for authors that make a very, very small profit.Only less than 1% of the fiction book authors in the world are rich from the sales of their books. I’ve talked to a lot of famous authors and they all tell me the same thing. They started making real money when they sold the movie rights to a huge studio. One author told me, “God bless, HBO!” They made a series out of her books. But (there is always a but) always bring an amazingly good entertainment lawyer with you to that meeting with the movie people, or you could lose everything you hope to gain.
Historically, authors who were well-off before writing a word do better. They have connections with other well-off or rich people and some of those people are in the publishing field.
The best authors are not necessarily published by the Big 5. Many of the best authors I’ve read have been in the indie world of authorship either with a small press or self-published.
Even if you get the Big 5 3-book deal, you may be amazed at what happens. It did happen to a friend of mine, and she discovered that the covers were only a vague resemblance of her books. Unless you are a favorite top 10 author of that publisher, you still have to pay for most of your promotions and go to conventions on your own dime. The hardbound book cost $25 in the bookstore, but after all the publisher’s expenses and her agent taking his cut, she made 25 cents per book sold.
I could go on. I have been reading a book on the truth behind publishing and it’s depressing like you can’t imagine. Now that author on Facebook not only lamented her lack of sales but asked the question, “Why am I writing?”
SUNSHINE
Your answer to “Why am I writing?” reveals all. What do you want from your writing?
For me, I write because it makes me hugely happy. After all these years of all the different kinds of writing I’ve done, I found my niche and love it. It makes me cry and laugh while I write. I have the edge since my books come from my dreams. There are several authors who say they are writing their dreams too.
It makes me happy when I get a private message through social media or email that my books made a difference in readers’ lives. One reader told me how she read Lady Fallon’s Dragons to a dear one in a coma and that person woke up saying they dreamt about my wonderful dragons. I have received other emails about how an aspect of my books moved them or made them very happy. Take into consideration that I write mostly vampire romance. Smiles.
It is possible to find a group of dedicated readers. Actually, they will find you on social media and on blogs, or at in-person events. The question is: “How fast can you write?”
Before the pandemic, I enjoyed in-person events. I usually sold books if I had a panel beforehand. Placement in a program is important. Think panelist or reading then signing/selling books. I am normally shy, but I love talking to people. I’m waiting on my doctor’s okay to go to these events again.
People love meeting authors, but it’s important to also talk or give a reading at these events. Sometimes just doing signings doesn’t work out well. Marion Zimmer Bradley once told me, “Susan, you must be seen!” So I’m telling you to go to these conferences and be seen!
Surprises happen: I was put in an unfortunate spot at a book signing. Instead of the large, main room, 3 other authors and myself were put in a little room across the hall. A couple came in and came right to my table. The convention had put out a large ad in the local newspaper with the list of signing authors. They had seen my name and came to look for me. They said they kept asking people in the main room where I was. They had bought all my books in Kindle but wanted to buy the copies in print too, which I inscribed to them personally. Then they asked for a photo with me. It was the highlight of my experience there. The idea of someone coming to a convention just to talk to you and buy your books! It can happen to you!
On my Facebook profile page which anyone can join, I wrote: “I know everyone is tired and overstressed. I write to give the world sheer fun.”
That’s why I write: I write for me but I always write for those that need sheer fun!
Some people write to leave a legacy to their friends and family. Some wrote for the world but didn’t get noticed during their lifetimes. They became famous after they were dead like Anne Frank, Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Herman Melville (author of Moby Dick), Stieg Larsson (author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and others. It happens. Are you willing to be okay with that?
So if you’re writing, write for personal joy. If it’s for the money, I wish you good fortune.
Be safe! Be happy! Have sheer joy in life! Read indie authors!
Truly,
-Susan
