Information Overload
If I were to take a guess, I’d say that many folks probably have at least one thing in common: they find life dizzying.Yeah, sure, we all have varying degrees of just how busy life can make us, but there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t talk with someone who is just a bit overwhelmed with everything going on in our world.
So why do we listen to it all? Why do we subject ourselves to the constant bombardment of news in the form of newspapers, the radio, the Internet, podcasts and books? We want to know what is going on. We can’t help but need to know what is going on, even if knowing isn’t exactly good for us. And don’t get me wrong. i’m not saying that we should all walk around uninformed—there is enough of that too. I am saying that we can’t let all of this information overload us. It is important to be informed, to digest the material we read and decide what is relevant to our lives and those around us. But panicking has never been helpful in any situation. It drives up our blood pressure, stresses us out and most likely leads to poor decision making.
Lesson learned? Take it one day at a time and do your research before letting anything you see or read knock you off kilter. Happy writing this week!

Writing Tools: Writing In the Dark By Susan Hanniford Crowley
For the last two days, my house has been plunged into darkness. A loved one was suffering from a major migraine. Since they had not had this before, we thought maybe it was Covid. So I gave my first at-home rapid response Covid test. I didn’t think it was. The tip-off was the light sensitivity and temperature in the normal range. We tested anyway and it came back negative.
Being in the dark and caring for someone sick took me offline! But now I’m back.
So the question is what do you do when you have the urge to your circumstances keep from writing? For me, when I’m on the computer, it takes all my attention. It is difficult to be on and then step aside every few minutes or even on and off every half hour. So what do you do?
Do as the ancient bards did? Write on paper! It could be on any form of paper you wish. Work with what you have or whatever is easy for you. Here are some options:
A notepad that fits in your pocket so it’s portableA legal pad A notebook binder with hole punched paperA journal – size doesn’t matter. A pack of index cards, but be sure to number them in order of the storylineOn the inside blank pages of a coloring bookAn unused last year’s calendar that you kept for the pictures. Ignore the calendar lines on the other page and just write. All this lets you write without turning the tablet, laptop, or desktop on and off constantly and then going to your writing program. When you write on paper, you lose those steps. This is important when there is an immediacy to your writing and the time you have.
The rest of my house was in the dim which wasn’t too bad with ambient light from the windows. Here are some other items you might use when writing in the dark.
Flashlight (I used this a great deal when writing in my childhood.)Camp lantern (battery powered)PenlightBooklight (I personally love these not only to read by but to write by.)I don’t suggest anything with a flame. A friend almost burned her house down that way. Definitely ruined her dining room table.
The purpose of all these things is ease. In my case, I didn’t want to further hurt my loved one by turning on the lights.
Well, today is a new day, my dear one is feeling better. It is also snowing and looks like it may snow all day. I think I’m experiencing a cosmic joke. (Laughing)
Have a good and warm weekend. If it’s cold where you are, stay safe and enjoy a warm beverage. I’m heating up some chocolate almond milk right now.

Just Keep Moving
Just move. Another step forward, another step forward. this past week was a doozy, but honestly these days, that seems par for the course. In some ways, I feel so grateful for all that I have. I feel guilty even complaining because there are so many others that go without. I have come to realize that my feelings of exhaustion or burnout are valid. Sure there are others out there experiencing worse, there always are. But that doesn’t invalidate our own feelings.
Prior to the pandemic, I got hooked on iFIT. It’s an application that I use with my treadmill to run all over the world. It really came in handy with the pandemic as travel is my absolute vice and that was the one of many things we couldn’t do easily during the pandemic. I love this application because I see and learn about different places while working out. I also get to hear about other peoples journeys as they strive to get fit or to recover from an illness or injury. Quite frankly, I find it motivating to know that others out there are just like me trying to move forward day after day. We all have our burdens and obstacles but taking it in baby steps, helps us cope with the bigger picture.
So what have I learned on my journey? That it’s OK to have setbacks and to just keep moving forward. And most importantly, lend a helping hand when you are able. Happy writing this week!

A Prickly Paranormal-Scope
Some were creatures prefer not to be bothered, so they grew spines. We are entering that time when so much is changing that people are having a hard time coping. Remember. Be kind!
On the side: Though there may be instances of were cats, or so I’ve heard. They like to change into humans for the ice cream.

Virgo:
The Hatpin is a sea urchin who only comes out at night. They are secret artists. Don’t make your art secret. Embrace it. Celebrate your creativity.

Writing Tools: Natural vs. Unnatural Weather By Susan Hanniford Crowley

You are looking at the book card for The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais for a reason. Sometimes weather whether natural or disaster influences a book. At other times, it is a gift or skill a character has. And then are the times when it is both.
A few weeks ago, we talked about using weather to inspire us, such as writing about a snowstorm or some other weather event you have experience with. Knowing first hand about the weather incident makes any story more exciting and realistic.
But what do you do when a character has a particular weather related power? How do you write that?
Imagination and research !
Years ago, I dreamed about vampire David Hilliard and his true love Laura Cordelais. Of course, their romance did now start out easy at all. Not everyone wants to be a vampire, even if they are dying. Laura might have been in New York City, but she was born in New Orleans.
I dreamed the book for several months and wrote it all down in a journal. Through the dreams I knew that Laura’s family hated vampires. They were also different from most people, being descended from a Telkhine known as Dexithea.
Now the research came into play. Who were the Telkhines? When I did the research, fewer people were on the internet. More universities were putting their more obscure documents online in collaborative projects with other universities.
That’s where I found my information. Telkhines, a race of people that once inhabited the island of Rhodes, were experts in metalurgy and were said to be able to control the weather. Dexithea was the head of one household.
I put the dreams and mythology together. Laura Cordelais was a direct descendant of Dexithea, who had been given the gift of throwing lightning by Zeus.
To see how imagination and research played out in a book, check out The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais at https://www.amazon.com/Stormy-Love-Life-Laura-Cordelais/dp/1493789546
It’s also available in paperback at Barnes and Noble online.
An important note: When making a book bible for your novel, note down the gift as part of your character’s description.
Have a good and warm weekend. If it’s cold where you are, enjoy a warm beverage. I’m heating up some chocolate almond milk right now.
Truly,

For The Love Of…A Long Fiction Series by Artemis Crow

Fiction series have been popular for a while now and I don’t see that waning even as micro novels—stories that can be read over a lunch hour—and serials rise in popularity. Longer series like mine have a certain type of reader, but don’t necessarily carry over to all series lovers. Some don’t like waiting for the next book, others wait until the series is completed before picking up book one.
But this post isn’t about the whys or why nots of long series popularity, it’s about the question I get asked ALL the time. How do you keep all the details straight?
For me, a long series isn’t all that much different than a trilogy, or a paranormal versus fantasy versus a contemporary. You have to keep your facts straight.
1. Software – There are programs such as Scrivener that act as a placeholder for the pertinent facts of your story as well as the story itself, along with a lot of other features. For authors who love that level of organization, it’s a great tool.
Non-software – I have notebooks and Word documents filled with information, in addition to what’s in my head. I have a printout of the order of the books in the series, and, since I’m using the hero’s journey as the arc of the series, I have that outlined as part of the book order. By doing that, I have an idea what needs to happen in each book and that gives me an idea of what themes would best serve that book.
2. Developmental editing – I have a great editor who has set up spreadsheets for all the books in my series. This allows her to double check facts and keep me from straying far afield. I highly recommend an editor in general, but strongly suggest that you pay for developmental edits as well as copy and line.
3. Winging it – nope and nope. I do not recommend that you do this, even to save a buck. If I had to cut back on anything with my editor it would be copy and line editing before developmental. That could just be me though. If your budget is tight, then consider using a program like Scrivener to help you keep your facts straight, and a program like Grammarly to clean up the rest of your book. Those programs are tools, but in my opinion they can’t replace an editor.
Why do all this? Why spend the money? It boils down to the questions: What kind of product do you want to put out in the world? Do you want your story to read well? After all the hours you spent writing the book, do you want it to be panned for editing errors?I want my stories to be read and loved. I don’t want to jar a reader out of the story because of mistakes that could have been avoided. Do yourself a favor and hire an editor
May your words flow freely,
Artemis

Important to Cope
Life feels crazy, but then I have to ask myself, “Does it ever not feel crazy?”I don’t know about you all but the pace of my life is always go go go. I don’t have time to stop and think half the time. I don’t have time to go slow.
A week or so ago I had a bout of poor decision making and stepped on my 10 year olds Hoverboard. Well, you can imagine it didn’t end well and let’s just say I’m happy to be nursing a battered and bruised elbow versus a broken arm. Who has time to deal with a broken arm? Not any moms that I know.
but seriously, where is all of this talk leading? Well, with all of this go go go I have my fair share of anxiety that I have to cope with. And I have to cope with it because others depend on me both at my job and in my home. But none of us are super heroes. We have flaws and we need rest and we need relaxation and we need that time to go slow.
This week I looked up coping with anxiety and a list of best practices came up. The list recommended I get enough sleep, I eat well, I practice relaxation techniques, I exercise, and I take a time out among other things. When I considered what I actually do I realized that while I may do some of these things occasionally I can rarely do all of this consistently. And that may be my problem. And while that problem hasn’t pushed me off course too much up until this point the truth is it could in the future.
So how do we deal with all of this? We have to take care of us. A bit of time today that we forgo may be a huge amount of time in the future that we just can’t afford to lose.
Happy writing this week!

Cats Were or Not? – A Paranormal-Scope

I will not be calling the cats were as they are already mystical and may or may not take offense. They do disgusting things when they get mad. The above photo is of a family member. When they are not mad and love you, wonderful things can happen. Purrrrr! (Oh, by the way never call them pets.)
On the side: Though there may be instances of were cats, or so I’ve heard. They like to change into humans for the ice cream.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Cats love to play with those cats close to them, sometimes even with their human pets. Build some playtime into your schedule.
Taurus:
Cats are always learning, as in how to knock the box of kitty treats off the table. Learning will bring you success.
Gemini:
Were Cats love tea parties but drink all the cream. Plan a day trip to someplace new and unexpected.
Cancer:
Cats enjoy spending time with those they love. Make some calls. Do the same.
Leo:
Cats never make New Year’s Resolutions! The only goal that works for them is to eat more fish. If that resolution is important to you, make another try.
Virgo:
Cats love performing their ritual every morning. We call them routines which makes it sound boring. Don’t be bored. Develop or add to your morning ritual.
Libra:
Cats are naturally creative. They enjoy gathering their toys in an artistic configuration. Explore your creative side this week.
Scorpio:
Cats gaze out the windows. It might look like wise pondering. But for some, it’s temporary brain fog. When baffled, follow their example. Gaze into the distance and look wise.
Sagittarius:
Cats don’t spend money. Their human pets do. Time to re-evaluate your expenses. Where can you find real savings?
Capricorn:
Were Cats can sniff an opportunity. Go forth. Smile. Make a great impression, and examine all opportunities carefully.
Aquarius:
Who’s the new cat in town? Smile and great graciously. Check out new people carefully before getting too close or sharing too much information.
Pisces:
Were Cats are not all that they seem. They have two different and sometimes conflicting natures. Don’t give your heart to someone new without knowing what’s what.
Thank you and stay safe.
