Mid-Blizzard By Susan Hanniford Crowley
January 29, 2022, Blizzard – photo by Susan Hanniford Crowley Photo taken at 6:48 AM.I am able to photograph using my phone a tiny part of the storm currently hitting us. I was only able the catch the fast-moving flakes by turning on the porch light.
This is still in the beginning. It’s supposed to either end late tonight or tomorrow morning. What makes this storm dangerous is the fierce wind and increasing snow over time.
What am I doing at 6:48 AM? I am writing to you. Then I’ll do yoga. Next, I will work on my next dragon book.
I have wood piled by my fireplace. There are blankets everywhere in the living room now. We have all our emergency supplies. Everything I can think of is in place. Devices are charged. Later, I will spend some time reading with the Kindle app on my tablet.
The town snowplow just went down the street. They started doing that last night before I went to bed.
Bless all the emergency personnel who are out there in this storm.
I know when the snow ends, my grandchildren will be in it sledding down their hill. Children look at this as fun, you know. Adults look at this with worry. Creative people look at this as an opportunity. We create. We paint, write, sculpt, crochet, knit, and use all manner of design.

Unexpected Weres Paranormal-Scope
There are were creatures in unexpected places. Here are some of my favorites.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

Aries:
The Were Pelican loves having lunch with humans. He often hides a foot to gain sympathy and free food. Be aware that scammers are out there.
Taurus:
The Were Fruit Bat is not a vampire. It’s very into fruit. Consider adding more fruits and veggies to your diet.
Gemini:
Were Tree Frogs love exercising how far each toe can reach. Consult your physician before starting or adding to your exercise program.
Cancer:
The Were Dolphin sleeps with one eye open. What are you worried about? Consider talking to a professional. Also, spend quality relaxing time! Bubble baths are great.
Leo:
Were Cows hate being isolated from friends. They need the contact and so do you! Phone some friends and others close to you.
Virgo:
Were Cats’ nose prints are as unique as human fingerprints. You are unique in the world. No one can truly replace you, so shine your smile and have more fun!
Libra:
The Were Clam finds a home and stays there. Time to get rid of clutter and make your home more comfortable and relaxing.
Scorpio:
Were Anteaters see the tiniest things. The details are going to become very important to your life.
Sagittarius:
Were Tortoises can sleep up to 16 hours and are very rested before they take a walk. Are you getting enough sleep?
Capricorn:
The Were Jaguar walks on soft padded feet. It’s best to keep a low profile this week. People are tired and over-sensitive.
Aquarius:
Were Parrots love to help other parrots. Someone close to you could use your help.
Pisces:
The Were ManhattAnt lives in a very small area of Manhattan. It loves New York! Plan a trip just for fun to your favorite place.

Why Read About Mystical Cats By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Photo of the cover by Susan Hanniford CrowleyWhat do authors read when they are not writing? I read history as part of the research for my books, and sometimes other romance authors. Other times you just want to cut loose and read something that is radically different and whimsical.

I don’t currently do book reviews. I’m just giving you an example of how it’s good to clear the cobwebs out of our brains from daily living and enjoy something beyond our usual reading material. I do enjoy some graphic novels. So this book was a natural “try me.” Not only is the prose humorous but so are the illustrations.
A long time ago, I studied with the famous children’s book author Francelia Butler. She was one of my professors at UCONN for a course in children’s literature. I met Maurice Sendak through her. Prof. Butler once told me that it is healthy for the brains of adults to read and watch cartoons regularly.
I think it is interesting that we adults will join gyms, jog, do yoga, and other physical activities to stay healthy but mostly we ignore the brain. When we come home, our bodies and brains are so exhausted, we veg in front of the TV. That is the perfect time to give the brain something fun and different. Rejuvenate yourself with cartoons, a graphic novel, or a humorous book like Pawmistry by Megan Lynn Kott.
This article has been cat-approved. My cat Buffy stared at it for several minutes without blinking. I had to blink.

For The Love Of…The Story Question by Artemis Crow
One of the first things I do when figuring out my next story, before even plot structure, is the story question. It’s the central topic the story is about and from it flows the plot and the theme and even the character arc.
Yes, it’s that important. So what exactly is a story question?
In the illuminating article How To Write a Story Question by Ramona DeFelice Long, https://ramonadef.com/2012/05/03/how-to-write-a-story-question/, she defines it: “The Story Question—sometimes called the Story Problem—is the core question to be answered in the story. Answering the Story Question is the goal of the primary plot line. It’s what drives the characters to act as they do. It’s the story’s catalyst–essentially, why the story exists.”
Even though the story may never actually appear in the story as a question, it does provide a goal for the protagonist and thus a path of action for them. You have that and you have the idea for a plot and can divine the themes and motifs that need to run throughout to enhance the reader’s experience. It can also help define the roles of your antagonist/love interest and your villain.
I like to define the story question and keep it at the top of the page as I work on the plot points. That keeps me from straying from the question, which I’m wont to do. If I find scenes that are not directly or indirectly flowing from the question, then I ask myself if that scene is really necessary and cut if the answer is “no.”
In the article, Ramona gives some potential story questions by genre:
For a mystery, a Story Question might be: “Who killed JR?”
For a thriller, a Story Question might be: “Who is trying to kill JR?” or “Why is Whoever trying to kill JR?”
For a romance, a Story Question might be: “Can JR overcome his emotional baggage and find love?”
For a romantic suspense, a Story Question might be: “How will JR survive this conflict while falling/staying in love?”
For a quest, a Story Question might be: “Can JR locate the last two legendary googoomama birds and save the species from extinction?”
For an adventure story, a Story Question might be: “Will JR and his young son survive a plane crash in the Sierra Nevada Mountains?”
For a women’s fiction novel, a Story Question might be: “Can JR save her drug-addicted sister without ruining her own life?”
For a middle grade novel, a Story Question might be: “Can JR befriend the mean girls without becoming one?”
For a YA novel, a Story Question might be: “Can JR pursue his musical talents despite his family’s disapproval?”

Burrowing In Paranormal-Scope
With the weather being what it is lately, burrowing in doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Remember your emergency supplies and charged devices. A good book can entertain for a long time.

The Were Meerkats of south Africa love previously owned homes with lots of extra rooms. Privacy and self-wellness are key today. It can be easy like cocoa and a soft blanket in front of the TV.

The Were Prarie Dogs keep a watchful eye from their burrow’s entrance. Change is coming like a big wind.

The Were Burrowing Owl stores food up for hard times. Consider setting up a pantry for yourself to do the same.
Virgo:
Were Magellanic Penguins prefer to be sheltered. Examine your home to see what provisions you need to have on hand in the event of a storm.

The Were Wombat is quite an earth mover. You are too. People are affected by what you say and do.
Scorpio:
The Burrowing Sea Urchin scraps out a home from rocks. Just go to show that buying quality works out in the end.
Sagittarius:
The Were Pocket Gopher aerates the soil when it tunnels which actually helps farmers. You are helping people and don’t even realize it.
Capricorn:
Were Aardvarks know that things don’t always go your way. They move. You may not want to. Keep a low profile this week.
Aquarius:
The Were Kingfisher loves to burrow and make new rooms. Sprucing up your home for comfort is in order.
Pisces:
Were Desert Turtles are all about the air conditioning and heating of their burrow. Make sure these systems are in order.

Writing Tools: Weather Dilemmas By Susan Hanniford Crowley
A single person on a winter expedition in a snowstormFor today, we are talking about a very important writing tool. It’s using your characters’ environment to set a mood or present a challenge in the plot. In some stories, the weather and how the characters react to it is the story.
The movie “Day After Tomorrow” was based on the fiction novel The Coming Global Superstorm by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber.
There is a lot of non-faction facts in fiction. Even in a fantasy novel that has battles, you can be sure that the author has studied historical battles.
In this case, we are looking at an incoming storm. Write what you do to prepare or how you are already prepared. Go into the detail of the storm, how it starts, and looks and sounds. Scents if you find them. Some people can smell snow in the wind.
Whether you are having a snowstorm, tornado, tsunami, volcano, etc., this is an opportunity to use what you know. For your characters, trying to survive shows their true mettle. Weaknesses are revealed as well as strengths.
Remember while you’re writing this that survivors tell the tale. When writing fiction there will be lots of things that you make up, but putting some non-fiction in it makes it more relatable and believable.
So go forth and while you are safe from the storm write. If your journey started with an evacuation, write that too.

Risk in Life
We all live in a world of risk. My day job happens to interact with a different type of risk and that I invest in the stock market. But these last two years we have all dealt with a very different sort of risk in dealing with Covid. It has under scored risk in a way that makes it feel very present in our lives. It is misleading in a way because even without Covid we deal with so much risk on a daily basis. It is only an illusion that we have control most of the time.The truth is, that at any time, life can upend that illusion and in moments turn our lives topsy-turvy.
I’m not saying that we should live recklessly because of this, but I am saying that we should all think more carefully about the risks we take each day and what is most important in our lives.Essentially, we are weighing the pros and cons on a daily basis and determining what is worth taking a risk. This is natural and it is within our human nature. There is nothing wrong with risk as long as the end goal we are aiming for is worth it.
Nobody sets out to live their lives afraid and alone. That is not living. The goal is to determine what it is we want from our lives, what it is we want to remember, and take the calculated risks necessary to say we lived. Happy riding this week!

Snowy Creatures Paranormal-Scope
Where I live, we’ve entered that snow cycle. It’s the time of freezing temperature, snow, and sleet storms. If you like in a snow zone, be careful!

The Nuckelavee is messed up with human, horse, and fish parts and no skin. Really scary. The technology could get equally scary this week. Back up everything! Don’t be surprised by glitches.
Taurus:
The Mahaha of Inuit legend looks human but is an ice-blue, freezing-to-touch demon. Though dangerous, it is easily tricked. Don’t be fooled this week by emails! Pay attention to details.
Gemini:
Yuki-onna of Japan is a snow death spirit. Re-examine your plans for travel and expect delays. Dress for the weather and have extra supplies on hand.
Cancer:
Kuraokami is an ice dragon and Shinto deity. Farmers pray to him for rain to benefit their crops. Take care with the weather in your area.
Leo:
The Chenoo of the frozen North was a man that became a monster because he didn’t share food when lives were at stake. Collaboration is key this week. Be generous with your time and listen to others.
Virgo:
The Ijiraq of Inuit legend leads travelers astray and they can’t remember their purpose. Focus is everything this week. Try something new to get your direction back.
Libra:
Barbegazi is a winter elf from the French Alps. They love winter sports and are kind to all they meet. Reciprocate the good feeling and spread kindness wherever you go.
Scorpio:
The Yeti of the Himalayas is still a mystery. Don’t be mysterious to those you love. Reconnect with loved ones.
Sagittarius:
Hrimfaxi is the goddess of night in Norse mythology and looks like a horse and pulls the Moon chariot. You are pulling a lot of weight, doing a ton of things this week. Remember to pace yourself. Take a break when necessary.
Capricorn:
The Nisse are magical little people in the Scandinavian people who have a sweet relationship with humans. People want to protect you, but be careful of your expenses this week.
Aquarius:
Boreas is the Greek god of the North Wind. Wait for a change before making big decisions. People are very sensitive right now and what you say may be misunderstood.
Pisces:
Khione is the daughter of Boreas and the Goddess of Snow. Things may be tough, but you have people on your side. Contact friends and/or family on a regular basis.

I know life is extremely hard for lots of people right now. Take a moment to see what Stephen’s life was like. See what he still did. See what he still did when others thought it was impossible.
