Perspective and Words
As a writer, one often thinks of perspective. This is because it can really shape a story and how the reader will perceive it depending on who is telling that story. Depending on who is telling a story it can also change the tone of the story.
For instance, a story told by the victim of a horrible crime may more easily persuade it’s readers to feel sympathy for this victim. More so than if the same story was told by a a person completely removed.
I’ve been thinking a lot about perspective these past couple weeks as I’ve read article upon article about the victims in Ukraine and the victims made of the Russian people. It is never surprising that the videos shown move us to tears. How can one not feel when watching all the devastation? The writing however is a different skill set altogether. The author must determine whose perspective to share and how to share it.In some ways the writing can be more powerful because it allows us to create the images in our mind and molds that picture.
Perspective has purpose and impact. But what I’ve seen be reinforced time and time again over the past couple weeks is that words too can persuade and influence and impact us so powerfully. It is not a new realization but a reminder of how we can use this power to change lives and call others to action.
Happy writing this week!

Twisted Trees Paranormal-Scope
Often, we talk about paranormal creatures and don’t say enough about paranormal plants, in particular the trees. Many of them outlive human beings. They are great listeners and if you’re watching, they will warn us of storms. Even when a limb is twisted, it is still growing toward the light.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
Trees are quietly social. It can be good to follow their example and take care what you post on social media. It can be misinterpreted and cause you grief.
Taurus:
From the cacao tree, we get chocolate. With a concentrated effort on your goals, good results are possible.
Gemini:
Like the Star Magnolia, you can be a shining star. Do something wonderful you’ve always wanted to do. People will notice.
Cancer:
The White Oak endures and lives a long time. When change comes, the oak simply grows a branch in another direction. Embrace that change. Be flexible.
Leo:
The Rubber Tree is where we get rubber. Someone fascinating is coming into your life. Smile. Spend time with that one person. Don’t bounce around.
Virgo:
The Coconut Palm produces coconuts. Step lively when they start falling. Consult a physician about a new exercise plan you’re considering.
Libra
The Silver Birch is found at higher altitudes. You’ve been caring for others. Please, care for yourself as well. Get a higher viewpoint with a new hobby.
Scorpio:
The Breadfruit Tree creates breadfruit, which is an important food in the Pacific countries. It tastes like bread but without the gluten. Time to try a new food or create a new tradition.
Sagittarius:
The Dragon Tree has swordlike leaves. This week focus on your communication with others. Be gentler. Words can cut. Look at others with a positive viewpoint.
Capricorn:
The Giant Sequoia is the tallest tree in the world and can live for 3,000 years. But when a Sequoia dies, a fairy ring grows consisting of baby Sequoias. Follow your dreams. Take a short trip into nature to help you see clearly and relax.
Aquarius:
The American Sycamore has a large canopy. Expand yourself and become the better person you’ve always wanted to be. Write down your goals and everything you accomplish.
Pisces:
Stand tall like the English Oak. Be confident. Perhaps buy a new item for your wardrobe that reflects the new you.
Thank you and stay safe.

Writing Tools: A World Observor By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Writers and artists are put in the unique position of recording history. I’ve lived long enough to know that the old saying “what goes around, comes around” is true.
My grandmother was Austrian-Ukrainian and born in Ukraine. I remember her stories about when Ukraine was not part of Russia and that was before the Soviet Union. She came to America right before WWI and could not go home due to war.
My heart breaks seeing all those people running for their lives.
This is the time to be writing when emotions are high. When a character speaks to your heart, you have to portray the world through his or her eyes.
It is easy to get emotionally caught up in the unfolding war and its toll on humanity. But this is the time to use that pain in your heart and write about it.
When a person’s world is changing drastically, they are leaving everything they know and in many ways the people they love and trust. The scenery out their window which had always been comforting is now foreign. Every part of their life demands a decision like where to eat, sleep, and how to stay alive.
To borrow from the famous play A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, they will have to depend on the “kindness of strangers.”
A long time ago, I was called a scribe for my tribe. Everyone who puts their thoughts on paper or online text is. We record history. Sometimes we disguise it in fiction to make it more palatable. Sometimes we just state the actions. A young woman by the name of Anne Frank wrote in a diary.
Go forth and write so the next generation remembers. Be a world observer.
Truly,

For The Love Of…Funny Excerpts by Artemis Crow

When I got the first round of edits back, my editor had made the comment that the end of the first chapter had done such a great job of setting up the rest of the book, even though it was part of a funny scene. In fact, the whole first chapter, she said, did the job. Seriously, I was so excited to get that news, but it made me stop. There’s a lesson to be learned there, and in future books I need to make sure I’m doing as good a job setting up the story in the first chapter as I did with this book.
But this post is about funny excerpts. So here is the last part of chapter one and the transition from funny to serious:
(Thea) shouldered the big leather bag and started down the hall for the front door when a scream echoed from deep underground.
Dropping the tote, she ran into the kitchen and opened the short, narrow, wooden door that led to the basement. She gathered her skirt in one hand, ran down the steps, and to the Alice in Wonderland-sized door that opened to a small, low-ceiling, rectangular room carved out of rock. She lifted the wooden platform with an old chair bolted to it, leather straps nailed on the arms and legs. They’d wondered about the history of this room; wondered but didn’t want to know about a secret room with that kind of chair.
She raced down the next set of steps, the layers of cool air growing colder with each foot she descended until she reached the sub-basement. The frigid air cooling her adrenaline-fueled sweat as she ran into the cave her mother and grandmother had uncovered years ago and set up as a shelter for a possible attack that Thea had grown to believe was a figment of their fevered imaginations.
She slid to a stop at the three sensory deprivation tanks sitting in one corner of the cave. “What are you two doing?” she asked, but her question was ignored.
The lights were soft, but even the dim light couldn’t hide her mother and grandmother, naked and sweaty, in a gladiatorial clench. The two women grappled, their silver-gray hair billowing like cotton candy around their contorted, red faces.
“You’re going to get into that tank if I have to knock you in the head and throw you in like a fish into a bowl!” Thea’s mom yelled with a shove for emphasis.
“You haven’t got the stones, figuratively or literally, to do more than wag a finger and grouse!” her Gram fired back. “And I’m not getting in there without my new happy toys!”
“You mean your dildos?” mom asked.
Thea covered her face with both hands to hide her hot face and her laughter. It was one thing to know your parents and grandparents had a sex life. It was an entirely different matter to have a grandmother who bought every waterproof sex toy on the market and stashed them in her tank to prevent “boredom” while she floated for hours.
“Stop, just stop, both of you!” Thea finally managed to get out.
Both women stopped shoving and grunting and faced Thea.
“What’s the problem, dear?” her mom asked. “I thought you’d left for the Salem Witchapalooza already.”
“Aw, jeez. At least put on your robes,” Thea said, looking away. “You know it’s called Haunted Happenings. Is this what you two do when I’m out? Recreate scenes from the Roman Coliseum?”
Gram giggled as she belted her robe. “No, but I do have an XXX-rated recreation of the movie Gladiator. Sadly, without Russell Crowe.”
Thea shook her head. “Then what are you fighting about?”
“Your mother isn’t happy that I bought new dildos—”
“Again. You bought new dildos, again,” her mom said.
“Well, they’re waterproof this time, so these should last a good long while.”
“And that video player?” her mom asked, her fists planted on her hips.
Gram swept her hands over her hair, trying to tame it, but it bounced back tall and wild as ever. “It’s a waterproof Kindle so I can watch all my movies—”
“Porn,” her mom said.
“And read all my books.”
“Erotica and porn.”
Gram slowly turned to face her daughter. “So I can entertain myself in the tank.”
Thea’s mom threw up her hands. “Watching NOVA is entertainment. Reading Shakespeare or romance novels, that’s entertainment. What you’re doing—”
“—is fun. Have you forgotten fun, Carys?” Gram asked, her voice soft with sadness and love. She stepped closer to her daughter and gently touched her face, the sass and irritation gone.
Carys covered Gram’s hand and closed her eyes, sagging into the compassion. “You can’t forget what you’ve never had,” she whispered.
“Oh. My. Goddess,” Thea said. “You two are killing me. I can’t cry, or I’ll mess up Rena’s makeup, and she’ll chew me out for days.” She had to break through the sadness enveloping the women because it was a universal truth that they didn’t do sad well…at all.
“Mom, let Gram have her toys and be grateful she doesn’t try to knit in the tank or some other hobby that would cost a fortune and clog up the pipes.”
Carys turned away from Gram’s touch and opened the lid of her tank.
“And Gram, please, ease up on the porn talk, okay? Howl at the moon, orgasm yourself into an early grave, but stop torturing mom.”
Carys picked up a pair of waterproof, noise-canceling headphones and put them on, letting the muffs clamp onto her ears with a pop. “So I don’t have to hear the howling and orgasming,” she said a little too loudly before climbing into the tank and throwing off her robe. It hit the floor only a moment before Carys sank naked into the salt-saturated, body-temp water and closed the lid, shutting out the world with a huff and a click.
Gram stared at the closed tank for a moment. “She needs to get laid, for all our sakes.” She flapped a frail, liver-spotted hand in Thea’s direction. “You do too, for that matter. Rustle up a pair of hotties tonight and bring them home so I can live vicariously through you.”
“You get more action in one tank session that we’ve gotten in years…combined.”
Gram dropped her robe and opened her tank. “Dearest girl, there’s a world of difference between having a hot, sexy body pressed up against yours and watching porn with some decidedly inventive dildos to pass the time. If you haven’t figured that out by now, then I have failed as a grandmother.”
Thea rolled her eyes and pointed at the tank. “Grandmothers are supposed to teach you how to bake, tell you about what life was like in her day, defy all the rules to spoil you rotten, not teach you about sex. Get inside, now, or I’m going to be late. As excuses go, I don’t think having a debate with my grandmother about sex with men versus inanimate objects is going to fly.”
Gram sat in the tank and nailed Thea with the same look she’d given Carys: love and sadness. “And when are you going to fly, little one?”
Gram shut the lid before Thea could say, “Never.”

Mardi Gras Paranormal-Scope

Though the parades have been happening in New Orleans since the end of January, tomorrow is the actual Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday). So start partying now! Tomorrow is the last all-out celebration before the calm and quiet of Lent begins. Today we look at the very paranormal creatures of Louisiana.
While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.
Aries:
When an alligator smiles, you know you’re in for trouble. Some people smile and don’t mean it. Take care this week. There is still honesty in the world. You just have to find it.
Taurus:
The Nutria or Coypu is a semi-aquatic rodent that destroys plants that hold back earthworks. A flood of information may be coming your way. Your task is to choose what is true and helpful.
Gemini:
The Pelican has a throat pouch to hold lots of fish. Time to think of getting a new purse that fits your needs or a container for a project.
Cancer:
The state dog of Catahoula Leopard Dog. This dog is intelligent, gentle, and loving. Its inquisitive nature leads him or her to learn new things. You have an inquisitive nature. Study a topic you’ve always wanted to learn about.
Leo:
The Great Blue Heron loves fishing and taking care of its young. Put out your “Gone Fishing” sign. Time to schedule some time to relax.
Virgo:
The Polyphemus Moth loves grapes. Consult with your physician about adding more fruit in your diet.
Libra
Short-eared Owls appear to not have ears but they hear very well. People around you are listening so put your best foot forward. It may matter in your career.
Scorpio:
Apple Snails are an invasive species and should not be eaten as they carry rat lungworm. Some dangers are hidden from sight. Be aware of your environment. All pretty things are not necessarily good.
Sagittarius:
The Louisiana Black Bear is the state mammal. They look cuddly but best to leave them alone. Someone dear to you will ask you for help.
Capricorn:
The Alligator Snapping Turtle should not be handled. Danger! There are matters best handled by experts. Don’t be afraid to get an expert’s advice.
Aquarius:
The state flower is the blossom of the Magnolia Tree and sweet it is. A sweetness that brings back memories of childhood. Reconnect with those close to you. Bring their sweetness more into your life.
Pisces:
The Great Horned Owl is a very adaptable bird. You are adaptable too! Good things are coming your way but will require being flexible.
Thank you and stay safe.

Writing Tools: No Trespassing By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Writing means recording moments. Even if you are writing fiction, the more you use non-fiction places, moments, feelings, and senses, the stronger the experience for the reader.
Create a writing tool for yourself. Use the photo above as a writing prompt. There are two parts. Write the character’s experience standing in the dark contemplating trespassing and imagining what the repercussions could be.
What does your character see beyond the fence?
Then write what actually happens. Make this a full sensory experience.
Remember. When you’re in the dark, every shadow looms larger. Every sound reverberates and is carried further by the wind and your imagination.
Consider also what might happen to the character if they linger in indecision too long!
Go write now!
Truly,

Truly Happy
I read an article this past week about wanting less and satisfaction and how we are basically programmed to want and always try for more. There was nothing in this article that I found incredibly surprising, but it was well written and the tone really made me think. How could I not? Each day, I feel absolutely blessed to live the life I lead and I can’t Imagine what it must be like for those who either aren’t living their best life or—and just as important as the mind effects so much—they feel like they aren’t happy living the life they lead.
So what was so thought-provoking from this article? It talked about deciding what truly makes you happy—not the exaggerated, materialistic things but what creates long-term happiness. It also talked about a reverse bucket list although it’s going to take a few more reads for me to truly understand what this means. And lastly it talks about going smaller which I absolutely understand. It’s something I talk to my husband about all the time and something I ask myself daily. Do we need all that we have? Why is it that we need versus what we want?
I really do believe that true happiness is one of life’s greatest mysteries. I also believe that most of us find it on a daily if not weekly basis in the small interactions that we have with those we love and care about. I also believe that when we are truly happy that we are our best selves for both ourselves and for those around us.
Happy writing this week!

Cancer:

For The Love Of…Not Giving Up by Artemis Crow

In the last few months I‘ve seen several posts from authors announcing that they were quitting writing. Every time, my heart flopped in my chest, the pain of their decision and what led up to it physically causing me pain because there are times in the past I wondered why I was trying to be a writer, trying to write books that someone might want to read, trying to succeed amid such a full field.
How could I possibly stand out? How could I sustain a career? How could I think I was good enough?
These questions and so many more filled me. The one truth I kept coming back to was this: I love writing. The challenge, the exciting moments when my brain clicks and I create a species or a world, when learn a mythology new to me. I love when a reader squees over my stories, I love making something out of nothing, but mostly, I love that I found my passion.
Maybe that’s why it hurts when people walk away. But, for them, walking away is a good thing. No doubt the tiny bit of pain I felt was nothing compared to theirs when they made the decision, to the emptiness they must have felt the next day, to the weight lifted, to the freedom they found to explore what else is out there.
Each of us must make choices about what we do, who we are…our why. Sometimes learning what feeds your soul is discovered early in life, for others it can take years or decades, for some finding their passion never comes. So, if you need to walk away, do it. Walking away isn’t giving up, it’s walking toward something even more wonderful, something that will fulfill you.
When I say to not give up, I’m not talking about what it is you do. I’m saying to not give up on yourself. If that means walking away from your job or from that which once made you happy but no longer does, follow your heart.
Have you walked away only to find yourself?
May your words flow freely,
Artemis
