For The Love Of…Letting Go by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

Like many, we’re  visiting family for the Christmas holiday. After years of not being able to travel, it was wonderful to see my husband’s parents. Seeing them again, it reminded me that the holidays aren’t just about reunions and feasts and presents; it’s also about letting go. Letting go of the year, letting go of a past to break free if its shackles, letting go of people, of grudges, of things.

When you have elderly parents, changes come swiftly. Backs become bent, a slow walk becomes a cane-aided shuffle, a certain vitality is lost. The conversation becomes about downsizing and sentiment, choosing what thing goes to whom, memories that have often been remembered and repeated. There’s a poignancy to your time together because you all know that time grows shorter.

Time and what you choose to do with it is distilled down to the essence of who you are to each other, to enjoying those shared memories, to creating less ambitious ones, to cherishing the slow, gentle new memories, to releasing the slights and pains of the past because most of them don’t matter.

The holidays are a time to let go of the emotional and physical clutter in our lives. They’re a time to recognize that though we are finite, we have years to connect and reconnect. The holidays are a symbol of birth and hope and love, we have a chance to let go of the struggles of the year and look forward to a fresh start. That’s true for our lives, but also for the relationships we have with our family.

Some of you may have beautiful connections with your family, some may not. Some have a lovely relationship with most of your family but not all. I’d say the latter is the most prevalent. While my musings above may be wistful, hopeful, you may have family who are too toxic to be around. Let them go, at least for now, at least until they change. If they can change.

Toxicity in your life cannot be allowed to thrive. Let it go.

Another thing I’ve noticed in elderly parents (no ding to parents, we’re all guilty of a little hoarding) is their tie to things. My mother-in-law has what she calls her “pink room.” It’s the room that serves as a catchall for every craft project dream, or the ones half-finished, or the gadgets she’s has bought over the years and never pulled out of the box. It’s every partially used box of Christmas cards, or stationary, or rolls of wrapping paper and ribbon. It’s picture frames and books and photos and photo albums, still empty. It’s the desktop computer that’s barely been used because there’s no path to get to it.

Come on, you know what I’m talking about.

But here’s the thing. That room is filled to the ceiling with her hopes and dreams, her nesting, her family, her longing to hold onto her past and the memories she’s made over her lifetime. It’s her “once was” and her “someday” room. The sentiments tied to so many of the items are priceless to her, just as vinyl albums are priceless to my husband.

And that is okay.

When my dad passed, my mom’s house was as cluttered, their garage was piled high and deep with stuff. Most of it needed to go, but rather than bulldoze through my parent’s things and stress her out more than she was already, I chose to make an event of it. I asked her to sit and get comfortable like a queen on a throne and then picked a closet or a room in the house and brought each item out to her (she’s elderly, she needed to be sitting for this). And like a queen she gave a thumbs up or down. We laughed at some of the memories the items elicited, we cried at others. The point was, yes, it took a lot more time to do this, but we were able to let go of most of the contents of the house, keeping only those things that made her more comfortable or gave her joy without making her feel like we were reducing her memories to rubbish. We relived the past, celebrated it, as we were forging a new future for her.

And that was more than okay.

By now you’re saying, “Artemis, wrap this up.” I’ll end with this: letting go is good, it’s healthy, but it can be destructive if you let it. Need to let go of someone who is harming you? Do it. Need to clear out your own clutter? Do it but be gentle and unapologetic about keeping those sentimental things. Need to help a loved one empty an entire house? Do it but make it a life- and love-affirming event, one where you can reminisce about the past, reconnect with that parent or aunt/uncle or whoever. See who they were, who they are, and make new memories while you’re at it.

Laugh, cry, let go.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

A Break

I’m going to start out today by saying I am sorry. I have been missing the past couple weeks and as such, so have my posts. I took a break and assumed that break included internet but it didn’t. Can you imagine that?

This time off was so surreal and it really gave me insight as to how dependent we are on our electronic devices. This sounds like a commonsense realization but the truth is I never really thought about how much I depend on my phone or my iPad. I mean even for a little things like answering somebody’s question. It is just so easy to Google the answer. I can honestly say I missed having that ability this past week and a half.

So what was it like to be without the use of technology? What did I do with my time? I read, I walked and explored, I breathe clean air and stared out at the water. I exercised more and ate more mindfully. I rested yet woke up earlier. I did not stress about the news or any of life‘s woes. I just was and it felt wonderful.

It is easy To recommend this to everyone but I realize that this is not always feasible nor is it easy to do. I also know that this would not be everyone’s idea of enjoyment. For me, it was needed. And I am not sure I realized that until after it was over. Happy writing this week and may you get the break you need.

Vampires’ Sigh Paranormal-Scope

With the passing of Anne Rice, the vampires I know are sighing a lot. We will all miss her.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:
The vampire entered a cemetery and put flowers on a grave. We can’t keep those we love except in our hearts. Remember someone special in your own way.

Taurus:
Vampires can be musical. Add to your music collection or take up an instrument.

Gemini:
Vampires enjoy wearing black. Add some color to your life. Get more color into your wardrobe.

Cancer:
Vampires don’t let holiday stress get to them. They learned a long time ago when to slow down and take a breather. Do the same.

Leo:
Vampires enjoy the lack of sun during this time of year. It’s great to get together with friends you haven’t seen for eons. Plan an outing with those close to you.

Virgo:
Vampires don’t miss the world of work, but if they did this would be the time to shine in your accomplishments. Above all be humble. Focus on the next project.

Libra:
Vampires love to travel and also keep a bag ready for the opportunity. Plan some time away.

Scorpio:
Vampires love it when money comes their way. But they are savers. Don’t spend too much on holiday gifts. Put some away for a rainy day. There is always a rainy day.

Sagittarius:
Vampires get a long time to work on relationships. We don’t. So consider mending some hurt feelings with others.

Capricorn:
Over the years vampires pick up bad habits. Try to get a handle on yours before the new year. Ask a dear friend to help.

Aquarius:
Vampires cherish moments of fun like taking up painting again or crocheting. What would you like to take up that’s fun?

Pisces:
Vampires have lived a long time and making memories is important. Get together with those you love and make some.

Thank you and stay safe.

How are you doing? By Susan Hanniford Crowley

A sweet YA vampire romance set in New York City filled with danger, intrigue, courage, and love.

This is a hard time of year for a lot of people. Some are mourning losses through the year of those close to them. Some are ill from Covid and other illnesses. There is a lot of pressure to make the holidays cheerful and fun. All the running around just makes us exhausted and a little sad.

If you’re feeling this way, I’m with you. Me also. I have a lingering head cold that isn’t Covid, but I feel dragged out just when I need to do a ton of things.

We have to rethink this. Maybe we don’t have to do everything and choosing what is most important to us will help.

I considered what always cheers me up. So we put up the tree, decorated the mantle and the bottom shelf of my dining room cabinet. I felt like I had achieved something after that.

EverWarm came out in paperback on Amazon. Here it is: https://www.amazon.com/EverWarm-Susan-Hanniford-Crowley/dp/B09MYRBDXK I am relieved about that. Additional formatting has to be done to get the novel in other online stores. I’m going to proceed on that slowly to make sure it is done right. It may have to wait for my energy to come back.

Today I sat around wrapping gifts to put under the tree. I have been watching movies lately that have Gene Wilder in them because he makes me laugh. I’m trying to take care of myself. A dear friend called and told me I should be taking a nap every day. Another friend sent me essential oils.

I’m saying, “Hi,” to everyone out there that is struggling like I am. Pampering yourself is a gift you can give yourself. You are important too! Gifts are not really important. Love is.

Thank you for visiting. Take care. Remember. A kind word is a gift given.

Truly,

Christmas Ghosts Paranormal-Scope

Photo by Febe Vanermen on Unsplash

Tis the season for ghosts and ghost stories. I bet you thought Halloween was. Before TV and radio, families would gather around the warmth of the fireplace and share scary stories as the weather grew fierce and cold. Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol is a ghost story. There are others. So sit back and enjoy.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:
Ghosts moan for those that take a shortcut to success. They know it never lasts. Plan your future carefully and work steadily.

Taurus:
Ghosts yell into the night when someone believes too easily what others say. Investigate before believing.

Gemini:
Ghosts are annoyed when they see a family neglected so one can build a career. You can balance both parts of your life.

Cancer:
Ghosts giggle when the living are having fun. Fun is healthy and reminds us of the important things in life.

Leo:
Sometimes ghosts shout and no one hears them. You understand what I mean. Breathe, smile, and carry on.

Virgo:
If a ghost is calming and kind, it’s not a ghost. Hint: wings. You also have the gift of being calming and kind to others.

Libra:
Ghosts are amused when the living run themselves ragged with shopping. Happiness cannot be bought. Find another way to give a different kind of gift.

Scorpio:
Ghosts know the power of words. You do too. Use your kind and compassionate words to help a friend.

Sagittarius:
Ghosts are often thought of as restricted to one place to haunt. You are not. A trip may be in your future. Plan carefully.

Capricorn:
Ghosts often felt they were not good enough. Don’t get caught in that mind trap. You are good enough. Pursue your dreams, but be smart and check everything out first.

Aquarius:
Ghosts bemoan things that don’t work out forever. Don’t be that way. Let it go! Move on! You get a “do over.”

Pisces:
Ghosts are all about stress. Don’t be like that. If you’re feeling stressed, do something relaxing. An unexpected gift is coming your way.

Thank you and stay safe.

Writing Tools: Christmas Ghosts By Susan Hanniford Crowley

For some when it comes to Christmas, they think back to their Christmases past and those they once rejoiced with. This is reflected in Charles Dickens’s famous tale A Christmas Carol, where Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. (Future is shown above.)

That is not the only story. It used to be a custom before the advent of TV and radio, that families would sit around the fire and tell ghost stories. It sort of fit with the world they were living in with its stark trees against a dark sky. With the exception of evergreen trees, everything looked lost and forlorn. It was as natural as the chill outside.

There were also tales of the Krampus. What is that? According to Wikipedia, “‘KRAMPUS is a horned, anthropomorphic figure in Central and Eastern Alpine folklore who, during the Christmas season, scares children who have misbehaved. Assisting Saint Nicholas, the pair visit children on the night of the 5th December, with Saint Nicholas rewarding the well-behaved children with modest gifts such as oranges, dried fruit, walnuts and chocolate, whilst the badly behaved ones only receive punishment from Krampus with birch rods.” Were these stories to frighten children into behaving? Yes, especially in the cold climates where the children were inside most of the time.

So in homage to those writers that vacationed in a villa on Lake Geneva in 1816 during dreary weather, where Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein and Dr. Polidori wrote The Vampyre (which would later inspire Bram Stoker to write Dracula), I issue writers and readers a challenge.

For the Writers:

As your Writing Tool, I challenge you to write a ghost or Krampus story.

For the Readers of this blog:

I challenge you to read a Christmas ghost story or find out more about the Krampus. They are easy to find. Type “Christmas Ghost Stories” in Google and they all show up.

For Mysterious Fun:

I enjoy watching the “Murdock Mysteries” which are on YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Their Christmas episodes are especially wonderful. There is one that features a Krampus.

What’s New with Me:

I published two books in one year. That’s a wow for me. LadyFallon’s Dragons and EverWarm (which has just been published) is on Amazon. You can find them here. https://www.amazon.com/Susan-Hanniford-Crowley/e/B004YXOGXG EverWarm is a paranormal Christmas story. It is a sweet romance and also has some of the Arnhem Knights in it.

What am I writing now? The sequel to Lady Fallon’s Dragons and EverWarm, The 4th book in the Arnhem Knights of New York is also on my desk.

Thank you for visiting today. If you are journeying for the holidays, please, be safe.

For The Love Of…NaNoWriMo’s End by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

2021 NaNoWriMo has ended. So, how did National Novel Writing Month start? From wikiwrimo:

The first year

“NaNoWriMo was founded by Chris Baty in July 1999. Twenty other people participated that year, all from the San Francisco Bay Area. The project began not because Baty and his friends had ideas for the great American novel but because they “wanted to write novels for the same dumb reasons twentysomethings start bands”. After grabbing the shortest novel on his shelf (which happened to be Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World) and doing a rough word count, the number that Wrimos today strive for was set in stone. Six of the twenty-one participants, including Baty, completed the challenge. After 1999, NaNoWriMo was moved from July to November to take advantage of the miserable weather.”

That’s how it began but, oh my, has it ballooned since then. Tens of thousands now participate each year, pushing to reach their goal, getting new words down. Some go on to “win” by reaching the 50k words written in 30 days, others may not reach that, but they finish books, edit books, get the motivation to start that book they’ve been putting off for months, even years.

In our own way, we all won, and for me that’s the best part. Reading all the updates throughout the month was inspiring, seeing the joy in new words from people who hadn’t written in a long time made me tear up. I’m fortunate that I can write full time; there was a time that I couldn’t do it because the work I did was too physically demanding for me to try. It wasn’t until I was older and able to retire early that I had the time to devote to this challenging, exasperating, thrilling endeavor.

For my NaNo, I hoped to get the first 50k words of the next book in my series. I projected it to be a 500-page book by the time it was published, and I still believe that it will be. What I didn’t expect was to finish 50k words in 8 days. So I set a new goal: get to 100k by the end of November. I reached that goal on the 18th. So I took a deep breath and set my last goal: finish the entire first draft by the 30th.

As of 2 p.m. on the 30th, I had written 160k words and reached The End. I was elated, sure, but by that point I felt like an amorphous blob floating in the Void. The next day, I wasn’t much better, but that’s kind of the point with this event. Write your fool head off for 30 days, no editing, no doubting, no distractions (except I did do extra words the days before Thanksgiving so I could one day off). It’s about dedicating time to do what you love, focusing on the words and the story, celebrating the journey of writing.

Being an author can be a difficult, lonely path. By doing an event like NaNoWriMo, you’re giving yourself permission to follow your heart.

So, how did I write so many words? Some of it was getting up really early and keeping at it until I reached my word count goal for that day. Some of it was letting myself fall into the world and stay there. The last was the clincher for me: a detailed outline.

I know, many of you write by the seat of your pants. Structure, outlines, scenes, they give you the heebie-jeebies and stifle your creative flow. I get it, I do. Many of you already work from an outline that details even the minutiae of every moment. I tried pantsing NaNo the first time I did it in 2018, and though I wrote 104k words that year, the book was a mess. So bad in fact that I had to completely rewrite it before I could publish the story.

In 2020, I had an outline, the bones of the plot with no detail. I found myself having to write down what I had written that day in a list of POVs, so I could see which characters needed to come next. That worked well and I finished the book, which was my goal, but the lack of prep slowed me down. One thing big benefit to not winging it was I didn’t have a rewrite with this book. Editing, sure, but the basic story was solid.

This year I decided to up my outline game. I created a file, listed all the chapters, the added the plot bones: opening, inciting incident, turning point 1, midpoint (aka turning point 2), turning point 3, the black moment, and the realization. I also had those same bones for my main secondary character and the villain.

By weaving all the basic parts of the story for the protagonist, antagonist, secondary character and villain into the outline, that told me where the subplots could fit in and make sure the pacing was good. From there, I fleshed out each chapter with detail about each scene (ranging from 2-3 scenes per chapter).

When I was done, I had a complete overview of the plot yet still had room to let my story freak flag fly to fulfill my need to let things happen. And they did to the tune of 2 twists that I had no idea would happen. Characters, heh…

Would this work for you? I don’t know, but it did for me. I also learned that I could write 5k words a day and not make myself crazy. It’s possible, which means I have no excuses. Yes, life happens, and you can’t spend every moment of every day in your chair, at your computer. But you can set yourself up for success whether by turning off your internal editor and going for it, or creating a detailed outline, or signing up for NaNoWriMo next year and letting the words flow out of you.

However you can get the words on paper, do it. Don’t let anything stop you from doing what you love, what takes your breath away. Forget Calgon, let your passion take you away.

Did you participate in NaNoWriMo this year? Tell me all about it!

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

An EverWarm Paranormal-Scope

Sweet teen vampire romance set in NYC at Christmastime

Ever have that moment of excitement, when you can’t breathe? I had that yesterday when EverWarm came out in Kindle on Amazon. Other formats will follow. In honor of my YA paranormal romance, we’re going to explore the world of vampires, werewolves, and elves on the paranormal-scope. It is that spooky time of year that extends way beyond Halloween.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:
Elves become very creative in winter. Often painting with ice on people’s windows. Consider doing a relaxing arts or crafts project.

Taurus:
Werewolves are hardwired to always think of the pack. This may be your time to become more involved in your world.

Gemini:
Vampires are the ultimate plan makers. Pick a goal dear to your heart and create a step-by-step plan to reach it.

Cancer:
Elves are big dreamers. Time to put your dreams in action and surge forward in your career. Stay focused on your work.

Leo:
Werewolves can scent change in the wind. It’s coming your way. Be flexible and go with the flow.

Virgo:
Vampires know that when they have a problem to ask advice from an elder. Find someone you trust and get some help with that situation. You don’t have to do everything alone.

Libra:
Elves cannot sing when stressed. Schedule in time to relax. Enjoy yoga, bubble baths, or whatever eases your mind from worries. It’s important you take care of yourself.

Scorpio:
Werewolves are social creatures. There is nothing like a getaway or a good party. Plan one of those yourself.

Sagittarius:
Vampires are always up for trying something new. It could be going someplace new or trying a new recipe. Expand your life with a little adventure.

Capricorn:
Elves have what they call sacred time. The forest is their shrine. Spend some time reflecting or enjoying what you hold sacred.

Aquarius:
Werewolves care about others. It could be easy like opening the door for someone or helping an elderly friend. Expand how you love and care for others.

Pisces:
Vampires have used their long life to study their favorite subjects and things of interest. Consider taking an online course to grow your knowledge.

Thank you and stay safe.
