So Small

So we finally did it. My husband and I took our first international trip since the start of Covid. We haven’t taken a trip just the two of us since 2006 so it was time, although admittedly we could have done without all the extra precautions needed with Covid. Still, I’m not sure when all that will go away. Needless to say, it was a wonderful trip.

We chose Iceland as it is a place with lots to do while socially distancing and being cautious and it really didn’t disappoint. I found Iceland clean and stunningly beautiful. It was calming in so many ways and I really think those Icelanders are onto something with all those relaxing pools and lagoons. They know how to relax and one gets the sense being there that we are really so small in the big world. Maybe it is the enormous waterfalls or glaciers or mountains—it just puts things in perspective. So to end, let me share a few pictures and may they inspire you with your writing this week.

Happy writing!

Happy Halloween/Blessed Samhain by Susan Hanniford Crowley

What is Samhain all about?

On October 31st, we will officially enter into the dark half of the year. The Celts ― an ancient people that spread across Europe most associated with modern-day Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland ― celebrated their “new year”, Samhain, on this eve. Literally translating in Gaelic to “Summer’s End”, Samhain marks the time when the sun ― or, the Son of the Goddess ― dies and rests in peace until his rebirth during the Winter Solstice. The seeds of the harvest lie dormant and hidden deep within the earth. The leaves on the trees shrivel, the dark nights grow longer, and the earth freezes and falls into a somber slumber. What’s more, Samhain was also the night when the veil between this world and the Otherworld was lifted, allowing humans to reunite with their lost loved ones and ancestors. 🎃👻

As the border between summer and winter, and lightness and darkness, Samhain is a celebration of Death. It was a festival of completion to show gratitude for both the labour sewn and the bounty reaped throughout the year. Simultaneously, it is a festival which acknowledges the very valuable time of rest, darkness, and silence that Mother Earth needs in order to revitalize herself for next year’s harvest ― a reality that we, as humans, so often forget. While celebrating Death may seem sinister to some, it is a stark reminder that we live in a never-ending world of cycles. Life, death, and rebirth are seen in the natural world everywhere we look from the moon to the animals, to the feminine body itself. Whether we like it or not, Death is a force we must not only be willing to come face to face with, but a force we must welcome and revere. 💀🍂

The fear that humanity as a collective holds about Death shows up in many areas of our lives, often to our own detriment. We cling tightly to relationships and people who were supposed to walk out of our lives months or even years ago. We hold onto jobs or careers that no longer fulfill us and drain our energy. We keep items around our homes that we never use, causing unnecessary clutter. We hold fast to parts of our self-identity that are false, because the known ― although destructive ― feels safer than the unknown and admitting that we do not really know who we are. So, this Samhain, in honour of all that this sacred Sabbat represents and aims to teach us, I challenge you to embrace endings in as many ways possible. Instead of seeing Death and the ending of relationships, careers, things, definitions of Self, etc. as losses, seek to view them as a process of purification. Think of their removal and cleansing as the same process that the Phoenix must endure when it bursts into flames, burns to ashes, and is reborn anew. 🦇🌖✨

Autumn is the great calm before the change. Those that have brilliant foliage are blessed by warm colors before the winter winds fly.

Gemini:
Gnomes embrace the fall, mainly with sweeping leaves out of their homes. Be flexible in your decorating efforts. Enjoy the process.

Cancer:
Leprechauns are the masters of wordplay. Take care with words to avoid misunderstandings with the people important to you.

Leo:
The Loch Ness monster rises to the surface to enjoy the twilight. Every moment of your life is special.

Virgo:
Goblins are known for counting money. When others ask you for money, take care and know they might not be able to repay you.

Libra:
Flying goats are hard to control. Resist the temptation to fly off on the goat. Spend time with your friends or family.

Scorpio:
Vampires have acquired wonderful stories from the many ages in which they lived. Spend time with an older friend or family member. Enjoy their wealth of tales from the past.

Sagittarius:
Werewolves believe you can sniff out the solution to any problem. Take time and uncover the facts. Spend time and get to know new people.

Capricorn:
Shapeshifters sometimes find it hard to be as adaptable as their world requires. Don’t be sad. Do what you can do. Tomorrow is a new day!

Aquarius:
A swirl of fall leaves may herald the arrival of an autumn nymph. Then prepare to see the true beauty of the season with light dancing on fluttering leaves. Open your eyes to what’s around you in nature and people.

Pisces:
Dragons love the fall. It’s their time to make their caves all cozy. Consider comfort when decorating!

An Interview with A Reader by Susan Hanniford Crowley

One reader speaks out!

Rose comes from Georgia and loves reading romance! I decided to interview her to get her insights on her favorite things in the books she’s read.

Rose: I love your books. They are my fav.

Susan: Thank you, Rose. Let’s start with what you look for when you’re looking at romance books. Do the covers matter to you?

Rose: Yes, I do pick out a book by its cover and title to begin with. Then I read about the book and continue or put it down according to what the book is about.

Susan: What kinds of things might make you put that book down?

Rose: If the book seems too violent. If the main characters are not in love and just having an fling. I don’t like violent books or books without love in them.

Susan: What special qualities will make you take a book home?

Rose: If the book has a interesting love story to it. If it has a strong beginning that gets your attention and keeps it. I like vampires, werewolves, faery, and elven stories.

Susan: What kind of heroes attract you the most? The big strong guys or the silent smart ones or something I haven’t thought of yet?

Rose: The big, strong, protective, rich, smart ones. (Laughs.) The ones who know what they want and how to get it.

Susan: So you don’t mind the protective guy. Some women don’t want heroines to appear weak. Do you have any advice for the best type of heroine?

Rose: She needs to be smart, attractive, and know what she wants in life and willing to do what it takes to get it.

Susan: So they almost have to be equally matched. Would you say that?

Rose: Absolutely!

Susan: What is your favorite part of a romance novel?

Rose: When they finally realize they are in love.

Susan: I love it. That’s the most amazing moment in the book. What would you like to see more of in romance novels?

Rose: I’d like to see the couple working together more at jobs that work for both of them. Or how their lives include their careers and how it works for both of them.

Susan: That is a concept that I haven’t seen a lot of yet. Is there anything you would like to say about romance novels to the writers and readers out there in our blog audience?

Rose: I think that romance novels teach people what love is supposed to be and acts out the hopes that people have about love. They need to be a good influence on their readers especially young readers that are forming their concepts about love and life.

Susan: Thank you, Rose. Listen up, authors to what a romance reader wants. Readers, do you have anything to add? Please, share in our comment box.

Look at an author’s book and if you see their name in blue, it means they have an Amazon Author Page.

Click on the blue name and a pop-up box will come up and ask if you would like to go there. Click it.

You will find all their books that are available and their formats (Kindle, Print, Audio book, Large print). I also have on mine a bio and blog posts from the Nights of Passion blog.

Every author whose name is in blue has a page like this!

Oh and if you like to follow an author click the “follow” box under their picture.

Here check it out! https://www.amazon.com/Susan-Hanniford-Crowley/e/B004YXOGXG

For The Love Of…The Energy Of Reader/Writer Conferences by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

Conferences with readers? I can’t recommend them enough. Granted, I’m still rocking the high from the Fall In Love New England conference I attended last week, but I’m not wrong. Writer conferences are great too, but there’s nothing like the energy and the overflowing love of story that fuels you through a busy two days like a reader/writer weekend.

Some of these conferences are a single day, others are two days. I prefer the two-day conference because there are more opportunities to mingle with readers and authors, more chances to make new friends and enjoy face-to-face time with old ones.

In addition to the panels and games, FILNE also has a costume contest. Yep, I had a blast going as the queen of one of the species I created for the Zodiac Assassins series, called a Memoria Soul-Keeper. Every butterfly you see contains all the souls of a now extinct paranormal family bloodline and their Memoria. You could say I was a walking nuclear reactor of soul power!

And next year, I’ll be releasing a short novel based on the Memoria! See what I did there? A little marketing!

The conferences can be exhausting, yet the energy I get from them fuels me for days, which makes FILNE a great segue into my other looming endeavor…National Novel Writing Month.

If you haven’t participated in NaNoWriMo before, it’s a month-long writing sprint. The goal is to finish a novel (50k words) in 30 days. Everything in your life takes a backseat; you put your head down and fingers on keys and just write. If you reach 50k+ by November 30th, you “win.” But as many say, even if you don’t reach 50k, you are a winner for having devoted time to your writing for 30 days.

I’ll be starting my next Zodiac book, Aries On Fire. If you plan to sign up for NaNoWriMo, come find me and let’s be buddies. I’m ACrow.

Whether you are attending conferences or planning to do NaNoWriMo, Fall is a great time of year to spend on your stories. Your readers will love you for it!

NaNoWriMo: https://nanowrimo.org/

May your words flow freely,

Artemis

Against Our Nature

Why is it so innate to us to always want what we don’t have? Or is it innate? Perhaps it is not, but either way, I really want to know the answer to this. I’ve traveled the world and seen extreme poverty. I’ve also seen extreme wealth. I don’t live amongst either. I live in what one would term the middle class in this country (USA). Still, in my experience and in what I have seen, it seems to me that many times those who are extremely poor are as happy or more so than those who are wealthy. Not all the time, but even dome of the time is surprising given the differences between the two.

People say it is human nature to always want what we can’t have. History is filled with stories and examples of this. Despite this, the happiest people I meet are those that have what they need and not always what they want. I am not sure each one of us knows how to get there. A wise few do, perhaps. Still, I believe it is some thing worth striving for in life as well as remembering during tough moments. Bottomline, may goi against our nature, will yield us great surprises.

Happy writing this week!

Whispers Paranormal-Scope

Whether it’s a whisper from a friend or mysterious creature in the night, whispers intrigue us and get our attention for bad or good. Should you listen? Only you can answer that question.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:
A vampire whispers of a future journey filled with obstacles. It has been their experience. Note: Be prepared for delays and detours while traveling during this week.

Taurus:
A sphinx poses this riddle: What is spoken in earnest but often untrue? Misinformation is everywhere and about everything. Don’t listen. Verify your information.

Gemini:
A centaur whispers: Frolic! You are in store for a fun family or friend event. Enjoy!

Cancer:
Nessie of the Loch whispers: Dive deep, rest, and enjoy down time. This week, you can get a ton of paperwork stuff done. Also take advantage of your down time. Read a book.

Leo:
Even with three heads Cerberus gets lonely. He whispers: Call someone dear to you. They are missing you too.

Virgo:
Pixies whisper: Time to celebrate! Dance! Sing! Do what brings you joy!

Libra:
Yeti whisper: Slow down. Look at the details. Enjoy more. Understand more!

Scorpio:
Orcs whisper: Get mad! First, never listen to an orc, they encourage justifiable anger and revenge. Second, there is no such thing as justifiable anger. It is an illusion that can harm you. Third, let it go.

Sagittarius:
A Brownie whispers: Giving a gift from the heart is always appreciated. Being the ultimate happy homemakers, they know about giving love.

Capricorn:
A faun whispers: Leave a small token of affection. It will be enough and speak volumes of how you feel.

Aquarius:
A Chimera is torn in different directions by its very diverse nature. It whispers: Too many different things pull at you. Find a balance with time.

Pisces:
The Phoenix whispers: When my energy lessens, I do one thing at a time, eat well, and take a quite trip out for air. Your energy will return.

Thank you and stay safe.

Cover Reveal by Susan Hanniford Crowley

Cover by Cindy Samul EverWarm, Book 1 of the Young Supernaturals of New York!

Here is the cover reveal for EverWarm, my sweet romance for ages 13 to 113. It’s set at Christmas time in New York City.

A boy meets a girl.

One is rich. The other lives in a cardboard box.

In one night the fate of two teenagers will change forever.

It is the first in the new series called Young Supernaturals of New York.

It’s not available yet. I will announce it as soon as it is!

Have a fun day!

Truly,
-Susan
