Super Powers

I’m sure that at one point or other in your life you’ve contemplated having super powers. And should you be forced to limit those powers, you’ve debated which one power you’d like to have.

I used to think I’d like to fly or be invisible, but the older I get, the more I realize I’d like to control time. Go backwards, go forward, skip around, slow down… I’m undecided on whether I’d want the ability to change anything through time as I can imagine this could have quite a large ripple effect and I’m not sure I want the responsibility of controlling that.

Why time? There never seems to be enough and when I’m enjoying life, it always passes too quickly. I’d have more time to do work and spend with those I love.

What about you? Any thoughts on a super power you’d like to have? Feel free to share.

Mystical Trees Paranormal-Scope

Trees take in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen to the planet. How could we not love them for their gift!

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

Aries:
The Angel Oak Tree in California is around 1,500 years old. Imagine of we could learn, if we could hear it. Talk to an older friend and open your mind to learning.

Taurus:
A Wisteria tree in Japan encloses half an acre. Imagine that many purple blossoms with a heavenly scent. Consider buying a new scent for yourself or your home.

Gemini:
According the the Buddhists, Buddha sat beneath the Bodhi Tree and attained enlightenment. Spend some time in nature and relieve your stress.

Cancer:
Certain tall oaks in old Prussian were thought to be inhabited by gods who would respond to questions. You don’t know things until you ask. But do you really want to know the answer

Leo:
In the Lord of the Rings, the Ents are tree-beings that are the shepherds of the forest. They defend the trees. Listen to what many people say to get a clear picture, before making any personal decisions.

Virgo:
The Whomping Willow in Harry Potter can whomp the heck out of anyone that gets in its personal space. Be aware that some people need more personal space than others.

Libra:
The American Elms of New York’s Central Park makes a gorgeous display of yellow and red leaves in the autumn. Consider adding more colors into your wardrobe.

Scorpio:
The Giant Sequoia are massive giant trees and stand hundreds of feet tall. Stand tall and be proud of your accomplishments. If you’ve been feeling down, time to look up.

Sagittarius:
The Olive Tree has a twisted and twined trunk but makes delicious olives. Sometime the path we take in life is twisted. Don’t be discouraged. Keep your eye on the fruit of your efforts, on what you prize most.

Capricorn:
The Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, Japan, provides a shelter for animals and a mysteriously dark sanctuary. Make a sanctuary in your home, where you can let go and restore.

Aquarius:
The Cherry Trees of Japan are breath-taking to see with its Springtime pink. It affirms that we can always be reborn and glorious. If you are starting again, allow yourself to bloom brightly.

Pisces:
The Ponthus Beech of France are old and huge. The embrace of their majestic sight is enough to prove that we endure and can be great. Don’t give up on that dream of yours.

Sweet Summer Pleasures Fun By Susan Hanniford Crowley

The last days of summer are upon us. You’ve heard me talk about the beach, so I’m adding some other sweet past times you might enjoy!

With the pandemic, outdoor drive-in theaters have made a revival in the US. Some communities have always had movies in the park or even in cemeteries, it was just a fun outdoor activity everyone could still enjoy. Country fairs have opened in many places again. Today I went to the Lebanon Fair. Their rides vendor cancelled at the last minute, and they were unable to provide a replacement. But there still was a lot to do. Concerts, performances, vendors, food, animals, and so much more. For The Love Of…Microtension by Artemis Crow

I read a fabulous article by C.S. Lakin via Jane Friedman’s blog. In the article, C.S. uses Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn to illustrate how microtension can be uses to throw the reader off or create the element of surprise. Microtension is not the big plot twists, or surprises or reversals. They are found in a line, in the small, barely noticeable increments that keep a reader questioning, wondering, reading.

So, I decided to apply the thoughts and examples in the article to a brief passage from my Valkyrie book for you all to see. FYI, this work in progress has not been to my editor yet. 

Here is my original version:

She heard muffled voices, but saw no one, so she risked being seen and ran down the hall and crouched by the entrance to the massive open space with stalls lining the two long walls. Rota had room for dozens of horses here, yet so many stalls were empty.

Bryn would correct that no matter what she had to do to get Rota to agree.

She inched forward on her hands and knees, passing a row of stalls, before reaching the half-wall partition separating the stalls from the arena itself. Inside the arena, the roof soared stories high above her, much higher than the house or the other barn, and extending much farther back than the others.

Bryn imagined horses flying in this space, like a Valkyrie aviary. No concerns about bad weather, or a sighting by a human; you could fly day or night, free to do what nature and Odin had intended.

Here is my attempt to add some microtension to the passage:

Bryn would correct that disparity no matter what she had to do to get Rota to agree.

She stood and inched along the deepest shadows hugging a row of stalls, avoiding the impossibly long fingers of sunlight that crept closer, stretching out to touch her, desperate to expose the intruder.

There she is, the liar, breaking yet another promise.

Inside the arena, the roof soared stories high above her, much higher than the house or the other barn, and extending much farther back than the others.

Bryn imagined horses flying in this space, unlike the now unused Valkyrie aviary where the joyous sound of flapping wings, the beauty of a horse in flight were both long absent. 

Here there would be no concerns about bad weather, no worries that humans would see the miracle; you could fly day or night, free to do what nature and Odin had intended.

The pit of her stomach dropped. She swallowed hard against the surge of hatred that battered her in the face of such promise and bounty.

I do think there is more microtension now, though adding microtension to my work will take time to master. With all that we must consider in our writing, this is a tool that I believe is under-utilized. I plan on correcting that for my stories!

Count Your Blessings

As I sit here typing up this blog, I find myself sweating. No, this isn’t some raunchy post nor am I making headway on my latest fitness commitment. Instead, our A/C has died and we are now figuring out next steps to have it replaced. I realize this doesn’t sound fun and of course it isn’t (I cringe just thinking about the bill), but today’s blog is more an exercise in patience and being grateful than anything else.

What am I grateful for? Well, honestly the list is quite long and I’m not going to bore you with the details, but I will use today as an example. Even though our system chose today to die, it is a rainy, slightly cooler day versus a few days ago when temperatures hit 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bottomline? This is the optimist in me talking. This last year has been crazy and this year is barely sliding by in the better category with all the expenditures that seem to come out of nowhere. Still, I’m grateful for all we have and for all the blessings we continue to receive.

Scorpio:
The Cheshire Cat can smile about anything. Smile more and you will be surprised how it makes you feel.

Sagittarius:
The Mad Hatter is all about fashion and making a statement. Add to your wardrobe either something you need or a statement piece.

Capricorn:
The Queen of Hearts wanted red roses. In every workplace there is a queen. Focus on what you need and avoid negativity. If you enjoy roses, get them for yourself. They don’t have to be red.

Aquarius:
The White Rabbit is constantly looking at his pocket watch. Don’t limit your fun time by checking the time. Commit to fun and being off the clock.

Pisces:
Do stop by the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party! You have an invitation to chat with friends. Make that call.

Stress

All around me, I’m surrounded by people living with stress. Stress is a part if life and we can deal with it as it comes and goes but the key word there is “goes.” These days however, I believe many of us are dealing with a more chronic form of stress that we don’t easily shake and that has a completely different effect on us.

Chronic stress was around long before the pandemic but I’m sure the pandemic didn’t help any. For a year plus (and still many of us today), we lived in isolation from those we love and fearing the fall out of what we termed sad normal human social interaction. Today, some of us are getting back to a new normal forever changed.

I’ve thought about stress a lot more lately as I’ve taken up running to manage my own. It was painful at first but now it is something I look forward to in order to deal with life. It allows me to focus and breath deep and push myself. Writing has always done this for me as well.

Where am I going with this? I’m telling you all to take some time to manage the stress. If you are one of very few people who never feel stressed, then more power to you. But if like me you need to learn to manage it before it manages you, find your outlet and embrace it.

U.S.A. Desert Paranormal-Scope

Western Red Bats roost in trees and when they fold their winds they look like dead leaves. Things are always what they seem. Exercise caution in your decisions.

Gila monsters are prefers the shade. Protect your skin.

Libra:
The Roadrunner really can run! It’s not just a cartoon. People don’t know all your talents. Participate in group projects and others will realize your gifts.

Scorpio:
The Diamondback Rattlesnack’s rattle is made of keratin, which is the same protein makes human hair and nails. You have more in common with others than you think. Smile.

Sagittarius:
Coyotes know all about collaborating with colleagues. Avoid the gossips and hang out with your tried and true.

Capricorn:
The Bobcat is very adaptable. So are you! Get in touch with old friends. You are entering a cycle where you will accomplish a lot.

Aquarius:
Jack Rabbits can run up to 40 mph. They are fast. So are you when you are in your area of expertise. They have a sense of being true to themselves and their own. So do you.

Pisces:
Seeing the white buffalo means receiving a blessing! Communicate with those you love.

The Arnhem Knights of New York Series focuses on the family and friends of Vampire King Max Vander Meer.

Vampire King of New York begins in Iceland where he has a home and where he has been hiding from the world.

A close friend of Max’s has laid out in the sun to purposely take his life after living what he deems as endless empty years without love. This has caused a crisis for Max. Not only in losing his friend but in that Max is facing the same truth.

When you’re a Viking and in crisis, what do you do? You make an appeal to your gods.

However making an appeal if successful always involves some give and take. So you have to be very careful what you ask for and how you ask it.

When the Goddess Freya appears and tells Max where to find love and the danger there, the caveat is that he return with his lady or be sealed forever in ice.
