Lazy Days of Summer Paranormal-Scope

Enjoy the last days of beaches and barbecues before the winds change again.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Vampires have an incredible focus on achieving their aims. You have the same gift. While others are playing, get a lot done at work. You’ll feel better and enjoy your weekends more.

Taurus:
Shapeshifters love meeting new people. You will meet someone who will make an impact on your life.

Gemini:
Elves know how to relax in the river and under the stars. Make your bath a spa experience.

Cancer:
Gnomes love interesting conversations. Enjoy gabbing with friends. By listening you will learn some new things.

Leo:
Werewolves are not careful with their money. You have entered the Budget Zone. Time to re-evaluate your spending, what you contribute to your retirement fund, and save toward big budget items or home repairs.

Virgo:
Faeries love meeting new faeries. This is your week to network. Meet new friends. Discover new career possibilities.

Libra
Gremlins love collaborating. In that way, they can take apart even more home appliances. For you, collaborating can be a good thing.

Scorpio:
Dragons are devoted to their loved ones. Take some time to do something special with those you love most.

Sagittarius:
Sprites run toward their goals. It would be easier if you wrote them down and chose one to work on. Take it a step at a time.

Capricorn:
The phoenix soars and chooses what do see. You can have fun in these last days of summer without going into debt. Choose wisely.

Aquarius:
Goblins love to tell those close to them what to do. Go to your dear ones if you need guidance.

Pisces:
Pegasus soars into sunrises. The winged horse is all about possibilities. New opportunities are coming your way.

Thank you and be safe.

Writing Tools: Writing Friends and Family Sagas By Susan Hanniford Crowley

It was a funny thing. I wrote The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais first, which focuses on the tempestuous relationship between Laura Cordelais and vampire David Hilliard. Laura is one of those rare unfortunates who slipped from the Brooklyn Bridge instead of jumping. David had just asked God to take mercy on his loneliness. He ends up jumping into the river to save Laura. Dying from her injuries, David wants to give her a second chance at life (even if it’s an undead life). She’s not grateful.

Laura was working in New York City but was from New Orleans. She considers vampires to be monsters. That’s why she’s not grateful to him. He hopes that returning her to New Orleans will make things better.

I don’t want to spoil too much but this is where friends get involved. There is a long-lost relative who also helps. The point is the hero doesn’t do everything alone. Some people give him advice. Others stand with him when times get rough. All these friends or family help move the story forward.

I dream all my books and sometimes I wake up and go, “Huh?” When Love Survives is one of those books. It is the first in the series even though it was actually written after The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais.

When Love Survives is set in New York City on that fateful day September 11th. New Yorkers pulled together to help each other. The story is about a shapeshifter and a young woman who doesn’t know she is magical, how they meet and become rescuers.

In all my tales, the hero and heroine don’t journey through the story in isolation. They meet others that help or hinder them. David Hilliard is a friend that shows up in the story. I put him in a rather embarrassing situation. (I won’t tell.)

Sometimes friends and family help out on a one-to-one basis. Other times you need the group. It is very much like life.

A saga is a long story that shows what leads up to that big event in the hero or heroine’s life. If you read the Vampires in Manhattan series, you’ll see how characters work together. You will also find my thread–the character that is in every one of the books. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/Susan-Hanniford-Crowley/e/B004YXOGXG

If you are interested in writing friends and family sagas, it is always wise to read some. Get used to the flow between characters. Each family member or friend has a skill, talent, or other asset in which they can help the main character.

Have fun reading and writing!

Truly,

Susan

Let’s Get Real: Interview with Author Cherie De Sues By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Welcome! Let’s get real with Author Cherie De Sues today!

Susan:  Tell us a little about you, your background, and what is fun about you!

Cherie: I’m a California girl born and raised in Huntington Beach. My parents took me sailing in Newport every weekend and I fell in love with the ocean. I’m a Navy veteran, scuba diver, and explorer of new beaches worldwide. I’ve lived in Hawaii, Florida, and Galveston, Texas to enjoy the sea activities I love. I’m also a retired open heart surgical PA, a medical person who uses a scalpel under the direction of a surgeon.

Susan: What are your favorites: color, food, and music?

Cherie: My favorite colors have evolved from all ocean shades to now include pink and purple. As a working artist, I lean toward botanical flowers, leaves, and such. Mexican food is my favorite. I enjoy everything from Flautas to tacos, enchiladas, and empanadas with rice and beans…and cheese! I’m eclectic in my music choices. I listen to Spanish “Gipsie Kings”, Ottmar Leibert and alternative or rock & roll.

Susan: Tell us about your book.  Where does your book take place? Why did you choose that time and location?

Cherie: Because this is a Native American paranormal story, I chose the tri-state Navajo land and Oregon. All my novels are in places I’ve been and know. So I used the Oregon coastline and mountain rivers for much of the book. All of my novels are hot and rated 3-4 on a scale of 5. As a retired medical professional, I assure you that all verbiage is accurate and sizzling.

Susan: What makes your hero/heroine fascinating so we can’t put the book down? Spoilers are not allowed.

Cherie: This is a FAST-paced novel with danger, paranormal elements, a strong female character attorney, and a medicine man shapeshifter bounty hunter. There are no chances for boredom, I start with drama, suspense, sexual tension, and never stop.

Susan: What do you love most about your book? What was the toughest part?

Cherie: I wanted authenticity and I spent a great deal of time on the research for the native American Navajo words and lifestyle to be correct. Sometimes getting the answers I needed was tough. But blending an attorney in love with the law with a bounty hunter was like fire and water.

Susan: Please, share a sneak peek.

*

Kicking hard, she bit the man’s hand covering her mouth and tasted blood. He pulled away with a pained yelp. Sara drew in a huge gulp of air then let it out on a scream she hoped would be heard over the music coming from the bar.

“Help! Somebody help me!”

The filthy, bloodstained hand came back over her mouth as the door of the trailer came into view. Sara fought with every ounce of strength in her command and the briefcase shoulder strap broke. Her cell phone, wallet, and documents fell out as she stomped down again with spiked heels.

Loud snarls layered over her muffled screams and she strained to look to the side. From out of the mist, a large cougar ran toward them and her captors abruptly released her. She crumbled to the ground. The earth shook with the power and rhythm of the feline’s paws. At ground level, Sara looked into amber eyes as the cat rose and went for the throat of the first man.

Screaming in horror, the man dropped with the first strike, hitting the dirt parking lot with blood gushing from his neck. He lay still, unconscious or dead, Sara couldn’t tell.

She crawled backward until she came up against the wheel of the trailer and watched in terror as the cougar ran after the other man. A door slammed closed and the cougar snarled. The cat stalked back into view, stopped and looked around the parking lot before padding quickly toward her.

A mew of fear escaped Sara’s lips as she cringed, bringing up her knees and covering her face, hoping to give the impression of submission. She didn’t want to die from the sharp claws of a cougar.

Her life—her incredibly empty life—flashed before her eyes. Even if she died, who would miss her? She had no family, no children. No man to call her own.

Sara held her breath and waited for the end.

Nothing happened. No growling, no teeth. A deep purr exhaled right in front of her and warm breath covered her trembling hands.

Steeling herself for what would come, she peered over her knees and looked right into the unblinking eyes of the cougar. She looked closely at the familiar amber with the ring of brown around the edges. The eyes of the stranger who’d kissed her.

No.

Susan: Why did you write your book?

Cherie: I enjoy suspenseful paranormal novels and am enamored with Native American history and life. This novel was an opportunity to stretch from the supernatural and medical/military novels I’d been writing.

Susan: What do you love to do when you’re not writing?

Cherie: I’m a watercolorist, artist, and surface pattern designer for Spoonflower and other online stores. I create wallpaper, fabric, and clothing under Gypsea Art Designs.

http://www.cheriedesues.com

I’ve been playing with the idea of creating the next two sequel books of Tales of the Red Moon Clan.

Susan: What is your favorite line in the book?

Cherie:

“She spared the cougar another sideways glance. He stared vigilantly out the back window. His lower jaw lay over the headrest; his feline body overflowed the leather seat. She shook her head, imagining the amount of fur she’d need to have vacuumed out of the Jag’s interior, but then smiled. At least he had the good sense to hang his claws over the edge of the seat so he wouldn’t scratch up the leather.”

Susan: Where can we find out more about your books?

Susan: Do you have any parting words for our readers or aspiring authors?

Cherie: Keep a journal, and write down what people say during interactions. Later, you can use these tidbits for your novel. For readers, I suggest trying new genres on occasion, you never know when you will find a gem and want to read all their work.

Thank you, Cherie, for getting real with us today at Nights of Passion!

Stay safe.

Security Blankets

It’s summer and my boys’ vacation time is in full swing. This being the first summer where we are supposedly easing out of Covid, I can tell the kids are wanting to just get out and play. They are having friends over and they are sleeping over at friends houses. It’s a summer of learning and trying new things.

As I help them pack to sleep over by a friend, I can’t help but smile that they still want to bring over their stuffed animals. These little toys still provide them comfort. It got me thinking about our own security blankets. The things We don’t want to let go of in order to face our fears. It sounds silly but the truth is that even as adults we are scared a lot of the time. Perhaps the fears feel like a bigger deal— we worry about paying bills, losing our jobs, not being successful in our endeavors and making mistakes we might not recover from.

Our security blankets may take the form of excuses as to why we aren’t willing to take risks or reasons we see the unknown as a threat. But are these really comforts to us? Or are they keeping us from learning and growing? Only we can truly answer this question for ourselves but it at least deserves some honest thought.

Happy writing this week!

We’re having a heat wave!

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Vampires that are artists have used their art to express themselves and widen their world. Take up art and see this widened world for yourself.

Taurus:
Shapeshifters know what to do when trouble is in the air. Keep aware of your surrounding. Keep a low profile this week.

Gemini:
Elves walk the road of self-discovery. Keep a journal. Visit a new place. Try a new recipe.

Cancer:
Gnomes are about family and friends. Spend time with those you cherish and those loyal ones that watch your back.

Leo:
Werewolves are patient when they hunt for something they really want. Save money toward your goal and be patient.

Virgo:
Faeries are always looking for new insights. Open your mind and listen to others. You may find out things you didn’t know.

Libra
Gremlins are retreating to pursue the creative arts and self-wellness. Consider doing the same.

Scorpio:
Dragons are charming and kind to others which makes networking work for them. Cultivate your best qualities and try more networking.

Sagittarius:
Sprites are always in a hurry. Slow down and do everything in moderation. There really is too much of a good thing.

Capricorn:
The phoenix rises and self-care becomes a priority. To do what you need to get done, take care of yourself so you can be at your best.

Aquarius:
Goblins are blunt when speaking to others and misunderstandings abound. Be especially kind and gentle with your words this week.

Pisces:
Pegasus isn’t very good with money. Exercise caution in spending and examine any big expenses, especially warranties.

Thank you and be safe.

Writing Tools: What To Do If Your Publisher Closes By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I was writing science fiction and fantasy, mostly sword and sorcery stories for Marion Zimmer Bradley and I went to a Nebula Awards Weekend, where I met Author Jennifer Stevenson who told me that she read my stuff and that I was really a paranormal romance writer. I went home and read a lot of paranormal romance and started writing in my new genre.

Then I submitted my book to Tease Publishing on the recommendation of another author.

The rest is history. In 2009, When Love Survives was published by Tease. Then began my relationship with 3 more books in the series Vampires in Manhattan plus 2 others in group anthologies.

When they closed in 2011, they graciously returned my print and ebook rights and gifted me my series ebook covers and the print cover for The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais.

The two other books: Mrs. Bright’s Tea Room and Poseidon’s Catch were in an author group series. I received the rights back but was not gifted the covers. Since it was a group series, that made sense.

Gifting covers by a publisher is rare to never.

When your publisher announces they are closing, it is important to be discussing the return of the rights they have before they are gone. An author I know didn’t ended up hiring a private detective to find the publisher, who had moved. Finally, she got the news that the rights had been sold to another publisher and who that was.

I had been fortunate with Tease as they had a clause in their contract that said ‘in the event, the publisher closes, all rights return to the author’.

Other publishers may not have this clause. It is something to discuss before you sign the contract on how you can get your book rights back and how many years the publisher has them before they can be returned to the author or negotiations begin for renewal of rights with that publisher.

After all is said and rights returned, you have two choices: find another publisher or self-publish. I did find another publisher who wanted my newest book but chose not to publish my backlist. I learned self-publishing and republished the 6 books.

An important note: Never Sell All Rights. Sell print and/or ebook rights. Always have a time limit for each right. (Example: 5 years.) Keep the other rights. You would be upset if you sold all rights and your book became a movie. If your publisher had all rights, they would have the film rights too. If the book was optioned for a movie, the publisher would make money but not the author.

Next Saturday we are having a delightful guest author on the Nights of Passion blog!

Next Sunday, I will share more about the Vampires in Manhattan series in ‘Writing Friends and Family Sagas’.

Truly,

Susan

For The Love Of…Aliens by Artemis Crow

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is marble-crow-logo.jpg

Okay, seriously, it’s not what you think.

July 21st, 2022, is Invite an Alien to Live with You Day! This holiday celebrates Mork & Mindy, a television show that starred Pam Dawber as Mindy and Robin Williams as Mork, an alien from the planet Ork. The day takes place on Robin Williams’ birthday, so he is celebrated as well.

When Marshall auditioned Williams for the role, Williams sat upside down in his chair. Marshall said he gave Williams the part because “he was the only alien to audition.”

Robin Williams was born on July 21, 1951. He became known for his quick, improvisational performance style, and for his range of acting abilities, from comedic to dramatic. He went to Juilliard in New York City, and got his start in stand-up, working in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Although he appeared on The Richard Pryor Show and Laugh-In (the late-1970s revival), it wasn’t until he became Mork that he became widely known.

How to Observe Invite an Alien to Live with You Day

Celebrate the day by putting on some rainbow suspenders and dressing up like Mork. You could then watch the Happy Days episode “My Favorite Orkan,” before proceeding to watch as much of Mork & Mindy as you can. You could also watch one of Williams’ many films or some of his stand-up, such as Weapons of Self Destruction. To learn more about Robin Williams’ life, read Robin by Dave Itzkoff, or watch Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind. If you are feeling up for an adventure, transport yourself to the house where Mork and Mindy lived

So today, celebrate your inner child as Robin did. Sit upside down in a chair, look up into the heavens and invite an alien to live with you. Nanu, nanu!

May Your Words Flow Freely,

Artemis

Rainy Paranormal-Scope

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." data-large-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." src="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." alt="" class="wp-image-29030" width="370" height="463" srcset="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 370w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 740w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 120w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 240w" sizes="(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px" />Photo by Josh Hild on Pexels.com

Rainy days in summer wash away lots of things. Of course, it makes the beach soggy, but inside a home looking out, it’s comforting.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Vampires that have lived their undead lives long enough have enormous confidence and are creative in many ways. Stretch your own creativity this week!

Taurus:
Gnomes are all about home decor. Make a list of the things you want to change and choose the easiest first.

Gemini:
Shapeshifters enjoy stretching out on the warm beach sand. Remember you are not covered with fur and need to protect your skin with sunscreen.

Cancer:
Elves live long lives and have bank accounts to match. It is tempting to spend too much when having a good time. Look for the bargains and save so you can have a good time for an additional day.

Leo:
Faeries are always open to making new friends. You will have the opportunity to make new friends.

Virgo:
Werewolves know what it is to retreat to re-energize. Do the same. Take care of yourself.

Libra
Dragons love networking and meeting other dragons far and wide. This is your week for networking and seeing your possibilities.

Scorpio:
Gremlins are not above being nice to the head Gremlin. He does give great toys to his favorites. Be kind to your boss this week and see what happens.

Sagittarius:
Goblins get stuck in their money-counting ways and don’t have fun. Schedule some time to get away to a new place.

Capricorn:
Sprites are fast fliers so they soar beyond their past easily. Humans, not so much. There are things in your past you would be better off getting rid of. You will be better once you let go.

Aquarius:
Pegasus loves family and friends. Plan a small get-together. Contact someone dear to you that cannot attend.

Pisces:
The phoenix rises! Forget the past and go forward. People you care about will appreciate it.

Thank you and be safe.

I’m under the weather. I’m writing my book in a journal at the moment. I’m watching a lot of my favorites on TV like The Orville and Stranger Things. I’m sleeping a lot.

Next weekend I hope to be back with a more insightful blog article to share.

If you’re under the weather too, follow what your doctor says and be kind to yourself.

Stay safe.

Truly,

Susan

The Therapy of Nature

As I sit outside writing this blog, I’m taking in the sounds of frogs and crickets, I’m enjoying The light summer breeze, I am sipping some cold iced tea, space and smelling the freshly cut grass. It is all absolutely therapeutic.

These days, I write a lot about relaxation and the importance of taking breaks. I write about this because there are times when my life feels like absolute chaos, but then I look around me and it seems the same way for everybody else. How do we all manage? Obviously some do that better than others. For me, I manage by enjoying nature and taking the occasional time out to just sit and ponder. It is my therapy along with spending time with my family.

For me, nature is healing. Yes I do realize in some ways that it can be very powerful in a destructive way, but it is also a reminder that we can only control so much. It is a reminder that everything has a beginning and an end and that the world moves in cycles. It grounds me.

What about you all? Where do you find your therapy?

Happy writing this week!
