I am stocking up on books to tide me over through the autumn rainstorms and winter snows. I find reading a book is calming. I think about the person who wrote it and try to guess what they were thinking at the moment of pen to paper. When I write, I have the distinct impression of opening a door to a new world.
I was asked by a reader why I write. I said, “I know the world is sad, weary of heart, and overstressed. I write to give sheer joy!”

A Contest & Sundries for Saturday By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Today, a Solar Eclipse happening. Never look directly at a Solar Eclipse with the proper equipment. I prefer watching it on YouTube from NASA. https://www.youtube.com/live/a0cyvKrG98w?si=38qkVDqny7kvlDwS
Today, I also learned about Moon Rainbows, which may occur when there are water droplets at night during a full moon. Basically, it is a rainbow holo that appears around the moon.
While I could not find a photo I could use, I did find that NASA is starting its own streaming service at no cost to the public and ad-free. It will be starting here when it does: https://www.nasa.gov/plus/

Break Time
I recently spent two nights camping in the Smoky mountains. Admittedly, I believe these were probably the two coldest nights thus far this Fall. it was freezing and not the most comfortable, and I dread waking up in the middle of the night to cross the campground towards the bathroom, but I would do it all over. In fact, we have done this camping every year for the last five years.
You might be wondering why I would seemingly subject myself and my family to what sounds a bit torturous. The truth is, despite the cold, and the discomfort, the Fall season in the Smokies is absolutely gorgeous. there is also something so calming about getting back to nature and tuning the rest of the noise out.
I’m not trying to be ignorant of all that is going on in our world, but it is constant. We are bombarded on all sides by endless information, and most of it doesn’t seem to be very positive. How could this possibly be healthy if we do this without break? It’s no wonder that we walk around stressed out or depressed. so what am I saying? I’m saying that it is important to come up for air into remove yourself from the constant onslaught of noise and pain. Exercise, the outdoors, and quiet can go along way and are much healthier than a lot of the alternatives we easily turn to. Don’t you think you deserve a break?

About Zombies Paranormal-Scope
October 8th was World Zombie Day! Yes, I missed it again. I need a better calendar! People dressed up like zombies and moaned and shuffled down streets to raise money for charities.
While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.
The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.
Aries:
Zombies forget everything from their past and dwell in the present. Living in the present and cherishing the moment is a good idea. Some past things are best forgotten.
Taurus:
Zombies know all about loneliness. Get out more. Join a club or community group and meet new people. Make friends.
Gemini:
Zombies have goals and saunter toward them. Consider writing down some goals and what you can do to achieve them.
Cancer:
Zombies love eating brains and looking at fall foliage. Enjoy an outing to see the wondrous colors of trees.
Leo:
Zombies find all the people in costume on Halloween to be comforting. Have a costume party of your own.
Virgo:
Zombies are their own person. They only want to please themselves. Release yourself from the ‘please everyone’ mindset even if only on your days off. Enjoy your life.
Libra
Zombies are missing lots of things in life. You don’t need to be that way. Go out and do something you’ve always wanted to do.
Scorpio:
Zombies are not very good with self-care. Focus not only on enjoying your life more but taking care of your health.
Sagittarius:
Zombies usually take it slow. What if you slowed down? What would you notice? Would you feel happier?
Capricorn:
Zombies can be surprisingly social with other zombies. Don’t be a loner. Socialize with friends.
Aquarius:
Zombies are all eyes on the prize when new opportunities arise. Keep your eyes open! Investigate the choices. Follow through on those you want.
Pisces:
Zombies often go down the road seldom traveled. Not because they planned it that way, but because they got lost. Don’t lose yourself. Plan a meaningful adventure or meaningful experience.

Writing Tools: Tropes By Susan Hanniford Crowley
It is, of course, raining again. I have to get out and photograph the fall foliage before it’s all washed away. The writing topic is Tropes. What are they exactly? When I originally did research, I found very vague answers. Then someone asked me for the tropes in my book. So I figured I must be clear on the definition and you’d probably appreciate knowing too.
A trope is a recurrent commonly used theme for a story. A trope is a plot mechanism. Examples: The Kickass Heroine, Tall Dark and Handsome Hero, The Quest, etc.
Why and how are tropes used? So the reader will recognize immediately the characters or storyline they enjoy. Often there there is unexpected twist. When an author uses a trope, they utilize an effective shortcut to reaching the reader. They are not cliches. Happily Ever After is also a trope. It shows an expectation on the part of the author and reader.

Not Yet Halloween Paranormal-Scope

Not Quite Halloween By Susan Hanniford Crowley
Jack-o-lanterns and Kitties! On to not quite Halloween. In my house, we begin decorating with the mantle and the sides of the fireplace. This is the time to prepare if you haven’t. Visit the craft stores because believe it or not they are on their last sale for items for Halloween. I talked to one store that is in most states in the US, and they told me that most everything for Halloween will be gone by the end of the first week in October.

Witch Hat Cookies (my alteration because I don’t have a frosting bag)
1 package of Fudge Stripe cookies
1 package of Hershey’s chocolate kisses
A little tube of green
Optional: Sprinkles
1. Flip the cookies over so they are all dark chocolate.
2. Using the green frosting glue the kiss to the middle of the cookie.
3. Make a green band on the hat with the frosting.
4. Add sprinkles to the green hat band.

Be You
I have two boys, one in middle school, and one in elementary school. I also have several nieces spanning elementary and middle school. All I can say in regards to their experience is gosh, it is rough to be a kid these days. Hell, I’m going to expand that statement and say, gosh it is just hard to be these days!
I’m not sure why we all seem so obsessed with what others can do and why we seem to feel that individually we lack so much. I see so many people spend their lives wasting away and not living because they’re so focused on what they could have instead of what they do have. In seeing my own kids, and their friends and my nieces, it is clear to me that this obsession of ours starts young.
If I could go back through my own life, I might change somethings. I fortunately have learned that I need to just worry about me, and not obsess about what I don’t have, but this was also learned through some less than ideal circumstances. it is the dilemma that I have with my kids. How do I teach them without forcibly pushing them through rough patches? I’m not sure. So in the meantime, we talk about it and what we have. We talk about being comfortable in our own skin. I hope I’m raising strong individuals who can face this world head on but it is a scary world and we don’t know until that time comes.
So what is today’s takeaway? be comfortable with being you. Improve upon yourself, but also treasure what it is you have and if you feel that is sound advice, then teach your kids to do the same.

Looking for Rainbows By Susan Hanniford Crowley
It is supposed to rain today and tomorrow. I can feel the changes toward Autumn before it arrives. Here and there a leaf has changed color while the rain falls. I love the Earth’s water cycle and how it replenishes the world every time it rains or snows. It’s not an inconvenience. It’s a blessing and maybe even a signal to go slowly and take more time with tasks. Enjoy people more! Prepare fun get-togethers. Look for the rainbow!
Here are some things on my to-do list:
Buy baby presents and a large gift bag. Diapers require a large gift bag to carry them in. Find a baby reading book. That is somewhat of a brain tease. It has to be unique. The baby doesn’t need 10 Pat the Bunny books.Buy another large gift bag for the November birthday I’m going to. I have all the small presents in a box right now. Bags with handles are just so much easier to carry.
Write the last two chapters of my new book. Writing-wise, this year has been strange. I started out writing 6 books at the same time. Then, the dreams stopped for four and focused on two. Finally, it was done to just my new dragon book in process. Then something happened that I didn’t expect. A book that has been dwelling in dreams for many, many years emerged and the dragon book stepped aside.
In Romance, it would be considered a small novel. In Science Fiction and Fantasy, it would be called a novella. It is a small book.
For those waiting, it is a steamy vampire romance book with a fun couple. It is also a heartwarming tale. Only two chapters left to write. Then I self-edit before it goes to my editor.
What is your to-do list? I hope life is kind to you. In all things, I try to look for the rainbow in life.
