I Feel Good

If you have read my blog posts, you have probably read about stress and life and the need for the occasional relaxation. I have recently started spending time doing yoga. Of course I have known about yoga before, but I’ve never really done it, at least not with any sort of committed mindset.

Oh my goodness, it is so hard! I don’t think I have ever sweat so much in my life and my muscles tremble as if I had spent quite a while lifting heavy weights. I know that yoga for me does not replace all exercise, but it has been such a stress reliever of late because I’m so concentrated on my positioning that I don’t have the time or the ability to focus on the stresses of life. For that one hour, I am completely free. I can honestly say that with this yoga and a few other minor changes in my life that for the first time in a while, I am breathing. I’m not sure how else to describe this because it is hard to understand unless you’ve ever felt yourself drowning in life’s complexities. It just feels good.

Moral of this week? Don’t give up on yourself! If you don’t take care of you, you won’t be around to help anyone else. Happy writing this week!

Creatures of Legend Paranormal-Scope

Today we take a look into the creatures that are the stuff of legend. Their stories were told to children to frighten them into being good or enchant them with good dreams. You make the decision on which is which.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
The Phoenix rises from the ashes. An old problem may rear its head causing you to get your ducks or phoenixes in a row. Be assured that you will rise and be better for it.

Taurus:
The Unicorn is known for its intuition. Your intuition is strong too. If you get the strong feeling that something is wrong for you, then it is.

Gemini:
The Mermaid symbolizes the inner child. Time for your inner child to play and enjoy life more.

Cancer:
Are you dreaming of Dragons? This is your time to roar in life and be who you are.

Leo:
The Griffin is part eagle and lion. You have the inner strength to be what you want to be.

Virgo:
The Yeti symbolized self-reflection and solitude. Too many people want too much from you. Spend some quality time with yourself.

Libra
The Basilisk is a symbol of courage. If you are being pressured to do something, you really don’t want to do, remember you have the right to refuse. Stand up for yourself.

Scorpio:
The Centaur represents a need for balance in life. Try to balance your home life and work life better. Focus on what’s important to you.

Sagittarius:
The Werewolf is all about control and suppressed emotions. Healing hurts from the past may be a priority for you.

Capricorn:
The Sphinx knows you already have the answer. Sometimes the answer to our problems is hidden from us. Try stepping back and looking at things one piece at a time.

Aquarius:
The Gremlin is a symbol of unexpected things coming your way. Prepare yourself.

Pisces:
The Hydra represents open-mindedness and the value of a team. The many heads symbolize the team that can give you different and valuable insights .

Enjoy life more and be safe.

Writing Tools: Writing A Sequel/Event Book By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Vampire in the Basement is the sequel to When Love Survives, as it follows Gregor and Regina’s story after September 11th. One of the most fun topics to write about in romance is a wedding. You have the dynamics between families and friends, the particulars of how everything looks, the nerves of the bride and groom, or both. There is a lot going on with a wedding, in particular a paranormal wedding.

Book Blurb: (Write a book blurb as soon as you know your story in your mind. You may change it later but a book blurb is a good guide for the author as well as the reader.)

Regina and Gregor
They survived one of New York City’s greatest disasters, and on their wedding day in Maine walked into another. Gregor aims to destroy the intruder who claims his bride. Regina must save the man she loves from a deadly curse with her magic. But she doesn’t know magic.

Lorraine and Theo
Everything about Lorraine is broken. She shapeshifts and forgets her clothes. She’s divorced and doesn’t believe in love anymore. Tall, blond, and handsome, Theo, a vampire, and Arnhem Knight desires Lorraine, but is it more than lust? Would he give up the Arnhem Knights for her?

Love, furry handcuffs, and a pine tree.

You may be all on top of the wedding in your book but if it’s a sequel like this one, I advise you to read the first book over again. What characters from that first book will be invited.

Drama! There can be a lot of drama before and after a wedding. At some weddings, the drama comes in the middle. You are going for an effect that will move the plot forward and that forces the hero or heroine or both to take action.

You might use someone or something to disrupt the wedding. It could be a best friend in love with the groom, a previous wife no one knew about, or a sudden vicious storm. It didn’t use any of those to prevent spoiling the story for you. You are at the part where you build and build that tension, fear, fury, and

The hero or heroine must use their resources to defend themselves and stop what is pulling them apart. The critical part is how they do that.

Next is the next step in their lives. Are they apart or together? In romance, endings tend to be HFN or HEA (happy for now or happily ever after). You have to decide if the experiences they had during this event have changed their love for each other.

Here is an excerpt from Vampire in the Basement by Susan Hanniford Crowley. Gregor and Regina are camping in a cave for a little romance before she meets his family.

*

The brown bunny shifted into a naked woman and screamed.

Gregor sat up. “Lorraine!”

“Lorraine?” Regina shrunk down under the blanket.

“Yes, it’s my sister.” He sniffed the air. “Why do you smell like pine?”

“The better to sneak up on you, big brother?”

“Why are you here?” Gregor grumbled.

Regina looked up at the pretty dark-haired woman. She had the same blue sky eyes as Gregor.

“I could ask you the same question, Gree.” Lorraine did not morph on any clothes. “So this must be Regina. Mom and Dad can’t stop talking about your fiancee. When Mom tried to call you, Dad was using his GPS tracking device and realized you weren’t in New York anymore but around here, so he sent us all out to look for you.”

“Wonderful.” Gregor looked completely annoyed. “For God’s sake, Lorraine, put on some clothes. Aren’t you supposed to be home with your husband?”

At that, his sister burst into tears. Regina rushed out of the sleeping bag and hugged her. “What’s wrong?”

Nocturnal Creatures Paranormal-Scope

Creatures that prowl at night continue to be a mystery to many. To find out more about nocturnal wildlife visit: https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/big-wild-sleepout/nocturnal-wildlife/

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
The male Tawny Owl says, “Twooo!” The female replies, “Twit.” Just goes to show it pays to be careful when forming new relationships.

Taurus:
Moths often flutter at night to a light! New opportunities will be coming your way. Not all bright ideas are good. Check them out carefully, so you don’t get burnt.

Gemini:
“A Fox’s tail is called a brush.” Time for a new hairdo and some clothes to brighten up your wardrobe.

Cancer:
Hedgehogs have very organized homes. Why not spend some time organizing yours! Finding everything fast can come in handy.

Leo:
Badgers love unsalted peanuts. Check with your doctor whether your current meal plans are really helping you be healthy, especially if you feel off.

Virgo:
Bats hang out in groups. Consider doing a humanitarian project or cause. Joining with friends makes it even more fun. Make your community a better place to live.

Libra
Fireflies use their light to attract a mate or good things to eat. Shine your light (smile) and see what good things come to you.

Scorpio:
Opposums enjoy exploring and food. This is a great time to plan a vacation.

Sagittarius:
Wolves hunt in family packs. Plan a get-together for family/friends and cherish those that love you.

Capricorn:
Coyotes hunt at night to avoid people. Be your best self and walk out into the limelight. Stay focused on your goal and above all things smile.

Aquarius:
Skunks will warn you before spraying usually by growling or stamping feet. Human skunks don’t. Take care with signing contracts and trying new opportunities. Read the small print. Get advice if needed.

Pisces:
The octopus is more active at night and can unscrew a jar with food inside it. That’s handy. Fun is at the top of your list this week!

Enjoy life more and be safe.

Writing Tools: Writing A Holiday Book By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Writing a holiday romance book has slightly more components than a normal romance. Those are what make that holiday important to the hero and heroine. How does the holiday move the plot?

You have your meet-cute.
Book Blurb:
Georgia doesn’t know she’s a Harmony. Jobless and about to be homeless, her heart sinks when a hand snatches the coat of her dreams from the storefront window. Then she sees him staring at her reflection . . . the stalker.

Trevor Stenwood, a vampire and Arnhem Knight, is handsome, sophisticated, and tongue-tied every time he sees her. Sworn to protect the supernaturals of the city, he’s fallen for a woman marked for death by demons. How can he save her when she’s afraid of him?

At Christmas time in New York City, will love bloom in the snow?

I used the components of the Christmas holiday that were special in my mind growing up. There was an increased feeling of love and hope, a sense of wonder especially when it snowed, and precious gifts. Gifts were toys, but some were useful and given by someone I loved.

I expanded gifts in my book. Paranormals were people who were magical like fae or dead like vampires. Supernaturals as I call them are humans with gifts like a werewolf or a shapeshifter. Often supernaturals don’t know they have a gift. Others grow into it. But for all intents and purposes, they are regular humans. And just because someone is a vampire doesn’t make them evil.

Holidays tend to make the hero and/or the heroine do things or need things more urgently. There is an inherent deadline. You want to get things done by the holiday and celebrate it.

In A Vampire for Christmas , the blurb tells us that Georgia is marked for death and thinks Trevor is a stalker. So these were requirements for my plot. How and when does Georgia begin to trust him and realize he’s not a stalker. Also what has marked her and why? How can he defend her or save her life?

Build the relationship first with growing hints in the background of an unseen danger.

Once trust is formed, let them find out about each other little by little. They each learn more about themselves and each other in this process.

Danger will find them.

Whether they survive depends on trust and love.

During this whole time, they are living in New York at Christmastime. There are the lights and trees of the season. There’s snow which can excite the heart but also is cold and threatening. People are on the streets hurrying here and there to shop and go home. They stop for coffee or a bit of food. At all the best places, there are long lines but it’s worth it.

The darkness following Georgia grows.

Every time there was a dark moment in the story, I brought it an aspect of light. Always I made the holiday present symbolically.

In every story, the characters have little problems that can be worked through intermingled with a growing bigger and bigger obstacle.

After confronting the horrible obstacle, the characters decide their next step.

Here is an excerpt showing Trevor and Georgia of A Vampire for Christmas by Susan Hanniford Crowley.

*

“The snowflake is so exquisite, but its life is so short. The ocean is eternal. It loves the snowflake and when they meet. . .”

“The snowflake dies.” Georgia sighed.

“No, not at all. The snowflake changes into water and becomes immortal.”

Georgia turned to face him. They were so very close, his mouth above her lips, his eyes gazing deeply into hers.

She could feel him searching for some answer.

Then his lips possessed her mouth so gently, sweetly, as if to caress.

Georgia felt herself melting like the snowflake touching the ocean wave. She kissed him back. Every kiss led to another. She felt his arm steady her. Her eyes were closed, as his finger brushed her cheek.

Writing Tools: Details Matter!

Book Card for The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais created by Susan Hanniford Crowley using Canva

Details matter! Why?

A detail can spin the plot in a new direction. It can tell you something deeply hidden in a character.Details that have an emotional impact on the reader keep a person reading. Keep your details small and need to know.Use the details to move the plot forward. Avoid mundane details that are not necessary to the plot.Write memorable details that are exciting, gratifying, and strong. Details should convey the sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and feeling.

Details enrich your storytelling within scenes and characters. It brings the story to life! With great and pleasurable details, you can feel haunted by a forest draped in gray moss obscuring the light and smells of decomposition. The mist magnifies sounds, so you feel surrounded. What the character feels is expressed in how they feel about a place.

Here is an excerpt from The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais, so you can see what I did with details.

*

“Hey, lady!  Don’t!”

The deep, bass voice reminded her of that exact moment when she knew nothing mattered anymore. That voice shouted for her not to jump.  Familiar.  It sounded so familiar, much like the cab driver who took her here.  After her life spiraled downhill.  Mugged.  Purse stolen.  Her precious art strewn about. She had nothing left.  Nothing, except the control of life or death.

Laura lost herself, lost her will to trudge another day, lost the hope she always saw in her mother’s eyes.  Her heart fluttered.  I want to die.  I don’t want to be hurt anymore.

She couldn’t stop crying, and the night sky opened up in sympathy.  A police siren blared.  Its rolling red lights blurred in the downpour like a watercolor painting.  Life was washing away.  Laura moved one foot into the air as if testing it.  Her chest ached.

I don’t really want to die.  An ember of hope still burned in her.

She twisted, holding on with one hand, while the other reached.  She tried to grasp the rail.  Her foot slipped.  Her hand released.

Plunging into the darkness, fear rose inside while regret surged.  She really didn’t want to die!  God, help me!  When she hit the wetness, she grasped at nothing.  Nothing while the black water engulfed her in its depths.

Drowning hurts.  She gasped and fought for air but lost her direction. As she floated down, her head filled with half images of family.  Just as she focused on one picture, it would melt away.  Her hands grew cold.  She couldn’t feel her feet.  Her lungs burned.

So this was dying.

*

“Thanks,” David said as he handed the driver his fare and watched the cab pull away from the curb into the rainy night.  The cab’s passenger, an attractive young woman, would wake the next morning with a slight feeling of euphoria but otherwise no memory of their evening together.  David grimaced to himself.  He could do with some euphoria.

Then he looked across the street and sighed.  There it was.  A hotel stood in place of the family home his father built in 1857.  He missed his mother and brothers.  William and George, his older brothers, died in the war.  David was supposed to die at Gettysburg, but that vampire . . .  He closed his eyes to push away the memory that hurt so much.  His honor was robbed that night when his blood seeped into the battlefield.  That ghastly, white face stole his humanity with a single bite.

He shook his head studying the building.  He took a room there once. He wanted to feel his mother’s gentle presence.  He had been desolate.  He needed her so the loneliness wouldn’t eat him.  But David found nothing.  No presence.  No feeling the family ever existed.

Heavy rain beat down on him, but David remained untouched by a single drop.  Pain, however, still reached through time to touch him.

“You are a deserter.  You are no longer my son.”

The image of his little brother Thomas waving from an upstairs window.  A hand-painted, wooden soldier David left on the back porch for the boy.

It was over that fast.

David walked down the street in the rain.  While his hunger was satisfied, his longing was not.  Blood was not enough anymore.  Lust for strangers left him empty.  David wanted love, and deep in his barely beating heart, he asked, God, take pity on a vampire.

Pain seared through his chest.  He fell to his knees.  David shook his head knowing vampires did not have heart attacks.  Trying to stand, he froze.  A vision.  A woman falling.  Despite the pain, he heard her cries and took to the air, then plunged into the East River.

A million contradictory thoughts ran through his brain, one being that he shouldn’t be in salt water, but he dismissed them all.  He had to find her.  A flash of gold caught his eye.  He rushed toward it, found her, and pulled her to the surface.  She didn’t stir.  He pressed her face to his.  She’s so cold but so soft.  He sighed.  Her lips are blue!  Holding her tightly in his arms, he exploded from the water and minutes later landed across the street from a hospital.

I’ll just give her to them.  All I have to do is walk across the street.  She’ll be all right.  But he didn’t move.  She stirred feelings inside him like no one ever had.  David didn’t want to let her go.  More than anything he wanted her to live, but he sensed the massive injuries to her body.  She had hit the water like concrete.  Blood seeped from her ears.  No.  The moment he brushed her golden locks from her beautiful, still face, his heart broke.  He cradled her against him like a child.  I can’t let her die.

It’s Okay to Cry

2023 has been a doozy of a year. And what makes it even harder is that it is not like we had a few years of luxury prior. I mean after all, we were dealing with a global pandemic, a bear of a stock market and a war in Europe of all things. And this is only to name a few of the things that made headlines. But for me personally, 2023 has been really hard and I know I’m not alone.

For the first time in a long time, I’ve come across a situation I’m just not sure how to resolve. Yes I have talked to experts and yes I have done my research. I know I can continue to do research but either way it is just hard to deal with the inevitable demise of a loved one. And it doesn’t help knowing that you are powerless to change the situation. I know we are all mortal and this is life, but that doesn’t make it easier to accept.

Perhaps I somehow thought I had control of the situation to begin with, which was simply foolish. I can admit that I have no control in how long I live nor do I have control on how long others live . Still, it never seems to come at a convenient time nor are you ready for when it comes. “It”meaning death.

With time I hope it does get easier or less difficult. I fully expect to cry and scream because that is all normal and may simply be what I need to do. In the meantime, I’m going to wish you a good and inspirational writing week.

I have sunshine were I am. If you can, find time to step out and enjoy if you have sunlight too.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Dragons don’t run toward the new opportunity. They soar. Make a goal list with small achievable steps toward your dream job or home.

Taurus:
Mermaids love opportunities to explore new places. If you can’t getaway at the moment, how about some weekend excursions.

Gemini:
Elves are very confident beings but they know how to keep secrets well. Meet people. Make connections. Smile and be confident, listen instead of talking about yourself.

Cancer:
Werewolves dislike carrying baggage. Letting go of some unnecessary hurt over the past will help you heal.

Leo:
Goblins are in a rut wearing the same fashion which is a century old. It’s time for the new you with hair and clothes. Update your look.

Virgo:
Pixies gain knowledge in their travels, and they are always up for attaining more. Consider taking a more advanced class in your profession.

Libra
Shapeshifters are flexible and have no problem asking for help when needed. Don’t get overwhelmed. It’s okay to ask for help.

Scorpio:
You wouldn’t know it by Gnomes are great networkers. Get busy and make some business contacts and maybe friends.

Sagittarius:
A Phoenix always goes the distance for friends. Someone close either in the family or a friend may need to hear from you. Contact those close to you.

Capricorn:
Even a Zombie can be creative as in developing a new walk. Creative energy burns bright in you this week. Work with that energy.

Aquarius:
The Unicorn isn’t always seen by everyone. Some people only see a horse. Being unique means taking great care of yourself. Catch up on any medical appointments. Discuss plans for exercise with your doctor.

Pisces:
Vampires have strong mental energy and can solve puzzles. Consider solving puzzles as a hobby. Think of it as an exercise for the brain.

Enjoy life and be safe.

Writing Tools: Disaster Love Stories & How to Write Them (the mini version) By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Two supernatural rescue workers meet on the darkest day in New York City.

I never planned to write a romance book that happens during a disaster. But I dreamed it. Let’s look at the anatomy of a disaster romance book.

You have your meet-cute.
Book Blurb: Regina O’Malley doesn’t know she’s magic. All she knows is that she’s late for her internship at a prominent brokerage house at the World Trade Center. Gregor Vasiliev, a shapeshifter and financial advisor at the World Trade Center, hates office coffee. While on a coffee and donut run, there in the street stands the lifemate he’s been searching for. He must act now or lose her forever.

I had to have a good reason for Gregor to do something when he saw her.
Reason: Shapeshifters know their lifemates at first sight. If you are writing a non-paranormal tale, then you still need a reason that brings the two together. Something just prior to the disaster that will bring your lovers together.
Disaster Strikes. It’s always best to choose one that has already happened. In that way, you can get many details both on the human reactions and the technical side. The less probable the disaster, the more readers will think the science is wrong and it can’t possibly be true and lose interest. Even though I dreamed my book, I still had to know what happened in the actual real-life story. I read old newspapers and magazines that had accounts of survivors. I read about the nearby businesses and about the rescuers themselves. Even though we write fiction, making it as real as possible is key.
Interaction between your new lovers (in what they can do during the disaster) increases as the disaster gets worse. If you can find a timeline of the true disaster or a similar one that helps.
When lovers work together, it’s intense. When lives are at stake, it grows more intense. Each must have a talent or skill that the other depends on to get the job done.
There is that moment when the characters feel helpless. They have done all they could for as long as they could. Others will take over. They have worked tirelessly to help others, but exhaustion hits them like a brick. It doesn’t matter at this point that the brain says to continue. The body must rest. It’s at this point when the lovers reach for each other for support and comfort. It’s that moment of feeling safe with the one you can depend on most, you have…
The big love scene.
After eating and resting, they return again. They keep working.
The awful part is the Silence, where there isn’t any more to do. You lovers have to decide what is best for them now.
You show them living their decision. You show how their experience still wears on them but how they are moving forward.

This is a sort of simplistic outline of how to write a Disaster Love Story. Another method would be to make two columns from the point the lovers meet. One column shows what they are doing. The other column shows what the disaster is doing. Three columns if you want to show what each of the lovers is doing and feeling.

I cried while writing When Love Survives. Before it was first published, the publisher called me to say that she and her staff cried too, and they had to publish it. Have a great Spring into Summer and remember to stay safe.

Truly,

Susan
