Life & Writing Tools: The Plot List

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." data-large-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." src="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." alt="" class="wp-image-29753" />Photo by Life Of Pix on Pexels.com

On Nights of Passion this week, Toni Kelly wrote about cognitive impairment in her article Getting Ahead of it All. I know this can happen to anyone and it makes us sad and frustrated. A word eludes us or for a writer, the worst thing is to get lost in your book and can’t remember what came directly before or after. Toni recommended lists and a book by Dr. Peter Attia. I’m getting the book.

Lists and labels are generally helpful to everyone. I know that back in 2019 when I was undergoing IV cancer treatments, I started getting brain fog and could not continue writing the book I was working on. I went to a Facebook group called Writers Helping Writers and told them my problem.

Many offered this solution:

Think grocery list. You can put 1., 2., 3., etc. if you want, but it may not be in order. Write the thought about what happened and what happened next that did come through. Don’t bother about making it a sentence. Later when the fog clears, you can print them out into strips and put them in order. Taping them and cutting off or ignoring the numbers.

That is great! And it works. I dream my books and often the dreams are not in order. So my information is there but has to be rearranged.

I will use my book EverWarm as an example of a plot list.

Maeve, 16, lives in cardboard box in alleyMaeve loves the Nutcracker Christmas display window of a storeMike, 16, loves the same windowMike thinks she is a cute redheadMike gets courage to ask her out for hot cocoaMaeve runs away

What happens next? If I didn’t know I would put it aside until I can get more on it.

Do you see how it’s done? Don’t make complete sentences. Plot lists are action based. Some description can be thrown in there too. Don’t worry about the spelling for now. Making a plot list will help you follow the movement in the storyline and keep track of what the characters are doing. This will prevent you from getting lost in the fog.

Recipes are plot lists for cooks. Almost every hobby has a plot list of how to start, continue step-by-step through the project, and how to finish.

Currently, I’m having brain fog. It could be chemotherapy residue or long covid after-effects. I’m off to make plot lists of the 4 books I’m working on. I will write them on legal pads. They work best for me. The act of writing with a pen also helps me remember.

I will be conferring with my doctor on possible medication, food choices, and supplements to take. I know there is more I can do. If you get brain fog, please, check with your physician.

Enjoy writing or indulging in that wonderful hobby of yours!

Truly,

Susan

Getting Ahead of it All

For those who have read enough of my posts, you realize that I focus a lot on trying to make the most of the time we have, and slowing down to enjoy life. I’ve always had this mindset, but as I get older, my experience only reinforces the need to enjoy the time we have and to try to extend the healthy part of our lives.

My father has what is termed cognitive impairment. Most of us think of this as leading eventually to some sort of dementia like Alzheimer’s, but that is not necessarily a guarantee— it’s also a matter of how one lives, how the disease progresses and the time we even have left. My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia in her 70s. My aunt was recently diagnosed with ALS.
As you can see, there is a bit of a pattern in my family and this is only in regards to nuerodegenerative diseases. Never mind the high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer that also run through my family. I have recently started reading a book, titled Outlive by Peter Attia. I was drawn to this book because I have listened to Peter’s podcast and I have also questioned why it is we treat these diseases only once we are diagnosed as being sick? We don’t we do anything sooner to try and stop this from happening?

As the caregiver for my father, I often ask myself why someone would want to continue living in this declining condition? I am sure for the moments my father is in his right mind, he would tell me that this is not how he imagined living in his old age . It would not surprise me to know that those suffering from some of these illnesses also suffer from depression, just given their circumstances. But does it have to be this way?

Before witnessing how dementia or Alzheimer’s plays out, I would have suggested that one just write lots of notes or create lists or label things. There are so many suggestions that I have thought of and then implemented only to find them somewhat useless. It makes me feel naïve and helpless against these diseases. But I’m an optimist and have to hope for better in the future. Peter’s book Outlive inspires me to do better for myself and my family as well as hope for more from science.

Happy writing this week and may you be inspired in some way as well.

Fogbound Paranormal-Scope

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." data-large-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." src="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." alt="" class="wp-image-29738" />Photo by Pedro Figueras on Pexels.com

I’ve spent the day fogbound with mist and spurts of rain and sometimes downpour. It’s perfect weather for those that prefer grey days. For the rest of us, don’t let the fog get you down.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Zombies don’t have a clue what to do with money. This week keep an eye on yours. Spend frugally.

Taurus:
Vampires enjoy meeting new people at social gatherings. Networking will be prime so keep your eyes and ears open and smile. Exchange cards.

Gemini:
Elves dig deep within themselves to find the cause of their unhappiness. Do the same and be willing to change.

Cancer:
Even werewolves know that sometimes the pack will change. New members could become good friends.

Leo:
Leprechauns know enough to keep their emotions under wraps. They succeed strictly in having a professional manner in all things.

Libra
Shapeshifters are great with change. Evaluate how you want your life to go and the steps you need to make to change and move toward your goal.

Scorpio:
Faeries know that if the head and heart disagree, not to enter into any contracts or promises. You will need more time to investigate any opportunity. Don’t let anyone rush you.

Sagittarius:
Gnomes know when it’s best to take a step back and use the time for mental health improvement. You deserve to feel good about things.

Capricorn:
Dragons know that it’s important to stay close to those you love. Keep it simple. Just enjoy meals and talking. It doesn’t have to be fancy.

Aquarius:
Mermaids love redecorating and reorganizing their homes. You will feel better if you do. Get rid of clutter and rearrange items until you get a nice feel.

Pisces:
Nessie loves the serenity of a quiet loch (lake). Spend some contemplative time in a place that gives you a serene feeling.

Enjoy life more and be safe.

Writing Tools: Conflict!

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." data-large-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." src="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." alt="" class="wp-image-28671" srcset="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 1024w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 150w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 300w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 768w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 1880w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />Photo by Johannes Plenio on Pexels.com

If everyone is happy throughout a book, readers will quickly drop it. Readers want to see how characters struggle through conflict to attain happiness at the end. There are seven main forms of conflict in literature.

Character against SelfCharacter against CharacterCharacter against SocietyCharacter against NatureCharacter against SupernaturalCharacter against TechnologyCharacter against Fate

An example of Character against Self would be Fahrenheit 451. Montag, the main character, is always torn inwardly that he may be doing the wrong thing. He’s a fireman, and firemen burn books in this book of an oppressive future. Characters versus self are plagued by feelings of self-doubt, indecision, guilt, and fear of change. Even when they take a risk and change, they are afraid of letting themselves and others down.

Character against Character is one form of conflict that is very recognizable. It is the classic good guy fighting the bad guy. The bad guy starts it usually with insults or small skirmishes, prodding and goading the good guy until they reach the Big Fight. I immediately think of the classic tale of Robin Hood. The Sheriff of Nottingham is always after him and his Merry Men. Even though Robin and his men are thieves, they steal from the rich and give to the poor, to compensate for Prince John’s heavy taxation of the people.

Character against Society is demonstrated by the character standing up to some wrong, such as discrimination on the basis of race, religion, segregation, unjust persecution, or environmental issues. Some examples are Hidden Figures, Hunger Games, and The Scarlet Letter. Each of these books demonstrates conflicts the main character(s) face against an unjust society.

Character against Nature is seemingly easy but isn’t. An example: the movie Dante’s Peak. A volcanologist goes to a little town with a volcano. Signs start showing that it may erupt. The business owners want a definite yes or no. I don’t want to give it away the ending. Check out the movie. It is not an easy choice for conflict because you have to research to get the science right. Movies sometimes get away with it. Books? Never. People will write you, email you, or ask you when you’re speaking in public. Not all the science is correct in Dante’s Peak.

Characters vs. the Supernatural is the conflict in most horror books and monsters/ghosts/etc. movies. A classic book example is Homer’s Odyssey. Odysseus aka Ulysses goes to fight the war in Troy. He manages to offend the Greek gods and his homeward sea voyage is overwhelmed with constant supernatural foes.

Character vs. Technology can be found in the classic science fiction book & movie 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke. The AI (artificial intelligence) computer that runs the spaceship is called HAL 9000. Obviously, with the new push in science into creating AI machines, the warning regarding AI is being ignored. I Robot by Issac Asimov is another classic showing character vs. technology.

Character against Fate means when the main character is struggling to fulfill his or her destiny. Lord of the Rings is classic with Frodo trying to get to Mount Doom to destroy the one ring. A modern-day example of character vs. fate is the Godfather movies. The character has to cope with or live with what fate has handed him or her.

I’ve given you a lot to think about in writing conflict. Have fun!

Truly,

Susan

The Bright Blooming Paranormal-Scope

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." data-large-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." src="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." alt="" class="wp-image-28711" srcset="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 810w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 119w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 237w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 768w, https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre... 1028w" sizes="(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px" />Photo by Vural Yavas on Pexels.com

Paranormal refers to an extraordinary power. I don’t know about you but spring flowers have a wonderfully cheerful power over me. I guess it has the same effect on others.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
For the Japanese, daffodil means joyfulness. If joy hasn’t filled you yet, it will. Surprises can be subtle.

Taurus:
The purple Tulip represents royalty. Start thinking of yourself as royal! You are worth it.

Gemini:
The yellow flower represents happiness and positive energy! Keep your positive energy going. Good things are coming your way.

Cancer:
The primrose means new beginnings. Something or someone new is coming your way!

Leo:
The bluebell means loyalty and humility. Take this dear one out to dinner. Cherish those close to you.

Libra
Lilacs mean confidence and renewal. Have confidence whether it’s at work or at social occasions. Smile and you’ll shine.

Scorpio:
The Iris means valor and wisdom. Others may be coming to you for advice so listen carefully before giving a response. Walk bravely in your life and have fun too.

Sagittarius:
In the movie “Stardust,” the Snowdrop gave good luck and protection from dark magic. Blessings surround you.

Capricorn:
Peonies represent good fortune, honor, and compassion. Be compassionate with a friend/family member having a hard time. Keep your eyes open for good fortune!

Aquarius:
Zinnias are remembrance flowers to remember someone you loved. They also attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Add a splash of color to your home or garden. Maybe a pot of Zinnias?

Pisces:
The Lily of the Valley is a symbol of good luck and happiness. Look around you! Planting some Lily of the Valley in a pot wouldn’t hurt.

Enjoy life more and be safe.

Life Tools: Self-Care in Grief

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." data-large-file="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." src="https://nightsofpassion.files.wordpre..." alt="" class="wp-image-29723" />Photo by Apoorv Ishan on Pexels.com

If you’ve been following the blog, you know I’m mourning. Self-care is vital when you’re in grief.

If you need to talk about it at any time other than to family and friends, though you can try them first, contact a counselor. Knowing when you need some help is a strength. Self-care is important. You know grief will lessen over time but it may not feel that way now. Do the things that make you happy. Crying is okay. We grow from crying. But distractions are good too! Watch your favorite movies, play your favorite music, and do your favorite activities.Try a new hobby just to do it. There’s no commitment. Just have fun.Pamper yourself with a delightfully scented bath soap. New hand lotions are also nice. Add something new to your wardrobe or a new hairstyle. If you’re going to change, make it a change you’ve always wanted. Rearrange your home. It doesn’t have to be drastic. Don’t let go of things, you’re not ready to let go. Trust yourself to know.Go out if it’s just down the street, visit a library, a park, a bookstore, or any pleasant place. Talk to people even if it’s “Have a nice day!” or in the library or bookstore “I’ve read that book. It’s great!” Don’t be afraid of conversing about the weather. Plan activities with friends and/or family. It doesn’t have to be only getting together on a holiday or birthday. If you are physically not well, call your doctor. Taking care of yourself means every part of you. Don’t ignore your health.

Here is a website I recommend for more information on how grief works:

Next week I’ll focus on Writing Tools: Conflict!

In Memory of Buffy Paranormal-Scope

My cat Buffy got sick recently and no matter what the vet or her family did, she passed away on Saturday morning. She taught me that cats were quite paranormal without having a “were” in front of their names. This week’s paranormal-scope is dedicated to Buffy. Thank you for all the wonderful things you did for the family and me. We will love you always.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Cats are patient and love to sit around to see how the game turns out. You will be amazed at what happens when you’re patient.

Taurus:
Cats can be finicky over their food. Other cats will eat everything. Take more care with your dietary choice.

Gemini:
Cats can look into your eyes and see your potential for love. You have a big heart. A friend is coming your way.

Cancer:
Burnout is a human problem. Cats know the value of napping. Make a practical schedule for napping even if it’s for 20 minutes. Relaxing, calming, and resting are positives to make you stronger.

Leo:
Cats have a sense of humor. Laying your head on a squeaky mouse under your pillow is always fun. It’s time to laugh about something funny. A movie or going to a comedy club will do it. Call a funny friend.

Virgo:
Cats can be very generous with their time. They will just sit and listen to you no matter what. Be equally generous with a friend who needs a listener.

Libra
Cats have their favorite shows too like Garfied or the Secrets Pets. They even like watching it upside-down. A new perspective on an issue can be enlightening.

Scorpio:
Cats have hobbies too like collecting stuffed plush bananas that smell like catnip. Indulge in your favorite hobby or find a new one. Something that excites you.

Sagittarius:
Some cats are avid bird watchers from a window seat, preferring to stay indoors. Time to freshen up the house with some new decor.

Capricorn:
Though cats groom themselves, some enjoy a nice brushing. Consider a new hairstyle and some new brushes and combs.

Aquarius:
Many cats enjoy hanging out and playing games. Plan a get-together with family and/or friends.

Pisces:
Cats care and often sit by their loved human when they cry or are sick. Someone close to you may need your caring.

Enjoy life and be safe.

Writing Tools: Contracts

I’m going to start with a rather humorous contract. Remember wording is everything. Back in 1996, my family went to Scotland. My oldest daughter Cera was particularly interested in Loch Ness. My dad made an agreement with my daughter. “If you bring back a photo of a monster at Loch Ness, I will give you $20.” We went and above is the photo she took of a monster at Loch Ness. My dad’s complaint was that it wasn’t Nessie. I was her witness and repeated the agreement specifying “a monster at Loch Ness” and the photo was indeed taken at Loch Ness. Her grandfather had to pay up.

It’s best to get contracts in writing as verbal agreements are not always honored. It is vitally important that you read everything in a contract, and if you don’t understand something get an agent or entertainment lawyer to read it and explain.

I am not an expert, but I have been witness to a few contract disasters.

In addition to protecting yourself with an agent or entertainment lawyer, educate yourself on what to expect in a contract. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association (SFWA) has public pages with model contracts. https://www.sfwa.org/member-links/committees/contracts-committee/ Click around under For Writers for other great resources.

Being a writer (especially if you are a small press or self-published author), you want to be up on the laws that protect you and how to use them. Helen Sedwick is an author and business attorney who has a great book called Self-Publisher’s Legal Handbook: Updated Guide to Protecting Your Rights and Your Wallet (Second Edition) It has a second on contract basics and contract language among a lot you will want to know. I love it and highly recommend this book. Your work is important, so know how to protect your rights.

One last thing: I know getting a contract is very exciting, but if you don’t agree with parts of it, ask for changes. I have.

Truly,

Susan

Overcome the Panic

Last week, I went scuba diving. I used to scuba dive quite a bit in my younger years, but having lived so many years in Arizona I just got away from it. Not to mention kids, a job, taking care of family members, and the never ending list goes on and on.

The site we dived at was called Brennecke’s Ledges off the coast of Kauai. It was a beautiful site but a rough day water wise and given I hadn’t dived in a few years, it took me some time to adjust. About 10 minutes in, I was rolling along, calm in this underwater world. When I completed the dive, I felt a sense of accomplishment. One, I survived which was a big deal considering my rough start in the choppy water. Second, it just felt like it mirrored my life of late. I get into choppy water or a dicey situation, I feel a momentary sense of panic and the I telll myself to breathe and calm and before I know it, I’m relaxed.

So where am I going with this? My point is that my experience is not so different from many of you all reading this blog. It is just a reminder that we can overcome any situation. It is just about taking a moment to pause, calm ourselves, take a deep breath and move forward

Happy writing this week!

Sunshine Paranormal-Scope

We are starting to get a lot of sunshine and warmer temperatures, as we near summer. It’s time for walks in the walk fresh air.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Vampires are used to starting fresh every day! Make your best impression and smile. A new journey in life awaits you.

Taurus:
Gnomes are naturally frugal. We have to work at it. Watch your money. It’s easy to overspend right now.

Gemini:
Shapeshifters are experts at being their best selves. They know when self-pampering is in order. Time for you to self-pamper.

Cancer:
Elves are very community-oriented. Being social can help you network. Consider what causes you would like to volunteer for. Learn new things and meet new people.

Leo:
Werewolves love the pack, but even a pack has its stars. Work on your most ambitious project and let people know you mean business. You are in star mode! Shine and get it done!

Virgo:
Faeries are picky over offers. If you’re doing your best and achieving more, opportunities may come your way. Be wise and get legal advice before signing life-changing documents.

Libra
Pixies make lifelong bonds with others, which enriches their lives. Cherish those close to you and be open to new friendships.

Scorpio:
Nessie loves to sing in the morning over the loch. Spend some time listening to your music collection and relax.

Sagittarius:
Mermaids are careful when investigating a shipwreck. A new discovery can collapse. Be careful of signing any new agreements. Have an extra pair of eyes check it over beforehand.

Capricorn:
Dragons love to soar but they don’t push their young ones to great heights before they are ready. Train up for any new adventures in which you are not an expert.

Aquarius:
After hours, Goblins are all about family and close friends. They are investing in improvements in their home. Consider the same.

Pisces:
The Phoenix may have come from ashes but now grows to new heights. Be bold in going after what you want. Smiles and show your inner strength. Work smart.

Enjoy life and be safe.
