Interview with Author Katie O’Connor By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Katie, welcome, and please, tell us a bit about yourself. 

I am a Canadian author. I’ve been writing my whole life but was only published for the first time in 2011. I have over 30 romances now. I’m a mom, a gramma, a wife. I love reading, eating, coffee, wine, and camping. All that is in no particular order. I am a member of two writing groups, one of which I founded, and I am a writing mentor. My grandkids and my writing are my life.

What’s your favorite color? Blue no green.

What’s your favorite dessert? All of them. Okay if I had to choose one, cheesecake or black cherry ice cream.

What inspired you to become a writer?  Did you always think you would be a writer?

I’ve dabbled in writing since I was a kid. First, it was bad stories, then angsty poetry. Once I moved away from home, I wrote dozens of romances. none were good enough for publication though I did submit them. I tried and tried. (I have a binder full of rejection letters.)  I got discouraged and quit. I tried again. And quit. One day in 2011, I was surfing the internet for something, I don’t remember what, and I stumbled upon a call for submissions. They were asking for erotic romance novellas of about 20,000 words. I thought, “I can do that.” I wrote it in four days and submitted it. Four days later I had a contract in my inbox. I was stunned. I thought, “Either I’m good, or they’re desperate.” The rest, as they say, is history. I’ve been writing daily ever since.

Which authors were your early influences? I don’t know that any specific ones were. I devour romance. Particularly small town. I adore romantic movies. I think they all blended into influencing me.

Please, tell our readers about your most recent book and how you developed the storyline. My most recent release (though not the latest one I’ve finished) is Matchmaker Christmas. I love books with children and I love Christmas. Matchmaker stories always make me smile. So, I blended them together for that perfect holiday matchmaker book. It’s a well-known secret that many of the characters in this book are named to honor my uber-fan Suzette and her family. I like naming characters after fans and using fan suggestions. (With their permission, of course.)

What did you enjoy most about writing the book? Truthfully, I enjoy the entire writing process, but this book was just such fun. The little girl was adorable and the adults stubborn. The story came together very quickly with no hard days which is always a bonus.

Now that you have everyone’s attention, please, tell us about Matchmaker Christmas.

Can Santa’s Christmas magic help a single mom with a matchmaking daughter find love with a jaded billionaire?

Darcy:

Getting over my ex’s betrayal has been tough and having a five-year-old daughter makes it easier and worse. Thankfully, I have a job, a home, and a mother to help us out. When my daughter enters us into The Amazing Santa Race, the last person I want to team up with is Kurt Stanwyck, my high school crush. Especially since my daughter thinks he’s the dad she asked Santa for.

Kurt might just be the perfect Christmas gift. But do I want to risk getting closer and having him break my daughter’s heart?

Kurt:

I’ve got more money than I’ll ever use, but I’m bored, lonely, and there’s this weird thing happening with my heart. Taking a medical sabbatical in my hometown of Salvation might just be my salvation. I’m debating leaving it all behind to work at my parent’s garden center where I know I’ll find the human contact I’m missing.

My folks have organized a Christmas challenge to raise money for the local hospital and they expect me to pair up with Darcy Sharp the pest who followed me around through high school. I’m not finding it as onerous as I thought I would. Darcy might just be the angel of my dreams.

How can I convince her that my money isn’t an obstacle to being together and that her heart is safe with me?

Abby

I might be only five, but I’m smart. I know this isn’t the real Santa, but he looks pretty good. I think his beard is real. Adrianna and Desiree, they’re my best friends, told me that the mall Santa is a real Santa’s helper. If I give this one my list, he’ll take it to real Santa.

I worked hard on my list. I changed it lots. Now, it was perfect.

“Hi, Santa,” I said and climbed up on his lap. I wasn’t afraid of him anymore. He was a stranger, but like the people who work in stores, he was a good stranger. That’s what Mom says. She worries too much. Like about the phone. I want a phone, but I know I won’t get one. It isn’t fair.

“Have you been a good girl this year, Abigail?”

“How did you know my name?”

“I know everyone’s names. Now, tell me what you want for Christmas this year because I know you’ve been good and you’ve been working on that list all year long.”

How did he know?

I gave him my paper. I tried not to cry because it was damp and wrinkled. It was beautiful before those stupid boys bumped Mom’s coffee on me.

“You’ve put a lot of work into this. Your coloring has improved a lot.”

He got a funny look on his face when he read my list.

“That’s a big list,” he said.

“Only four things. I want a daddy, a big house, a puppy, and a huge family,” I tell him. “I don’t even care if I don’t get anything else. ‘Specially if I get a new Dad. I want someone handsome for Mama and I. And he needs to have a good job so we’re not poor anymore.” I leaned close and whispered my terrible secret. “I don’t like wearing not new stuff. I want to shop at new stores, not used ones.” I hide my face cause I’m ‘barrased.

“Well, Abby, life gives us things we don’t always like. Being a good girl means being happy with what we have. Can you do that for me?”

“Yes!” I almost jump up because I’m so excited. Good girls get their Christmas wishes.

“Now, I can’t promise anything, but Christmas is magic and I’ll think very seriously about your list.”

He looked at Mama and she looked upset. Santa frowned a little. I patted his cheek. “Thank you, Santa. I’ll be good and I’ll be happy with what you bring me.”

I hop off his lap, I’m so excited I want to shout and yell. I feel like a gazillion butterflies are dancing in my tummy. The good way, not like when I need to barf.

Bleak December Paranormal-Scope

We are fortunate to have holidays in December that turn our faces away even temporarily from the bleak pre-winter environment. Trees become dark claws in the twilight. Icy winds blow. No wonder ghost stories were so popular during the Victorian Age in December.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
A mist creeps up from the ground as we walk at night and frankly, creeps us out. Take care where you walk. Uneven ground could cause an injury. Use caution with words for the same reason.

Taurus:
The phoenix is a daylight creature. Reborn from the ashes of one life, it soars into the next. You may feel that way with meeting new people and experiences. 2024 is coming up fast.

Gemini:
Ghosts of the past may bother you. Let go of the past. Renew insurance and keep up with doctor appointments. Keep your eyes on the future coming up fast.

Cancer:
Don’t let boo distract you. A new opportunity needs to be researched to make sure it’s legit and not just some ectoplasm that will disappear with your morning by morning.

Leo:
A whispered memory at night may remind you to take joy in the holidays. Don’t lock yourself away with memories of lost loved ones, go out and make friends.

Virgo:
Some ghosts appear to remind you that you are loved. Make a plan with living friends and/or family to have a gathering.

Libra
Ghost mist can be distracting fog. Make a to-do list of the holiday things you want to do. Don’t worry. The fog will clear.

Scorpio:
Ghosts don’t often reveal money hidden in the house. Set a holiday budget and stick to it.

Sagittarius:
Some ghosts can be seen while others are just a whisp. Dress to be seen at the holiday events. Spend time with friends.

Capricorn:
Ghosts who like you may tell you to take better care of yourself. Dedicate some downtime for yourself during this rushing holiday.

Aquarius:
Ghost orbs love having their picture taken. Be the photographer at your next friends/family gathering. This could be a great hobby for you.

Pisces:
If you see a ghost walking down the street, it’s best to give them space. Misspoken thoughts can hurt feelings and you want that with a ghost or anyone.

Holiday Season Starts

I can see why so much excitement comes with this season— the holidays. For some, it is the season full of songs and laughter, people can usually be more generous and overall, we tend to find ourselves in better moods. For others, it is a time for prayer and reflection. It isn’t always happy. Occasionally, we will see fights over toys or theft of gifts, or simple greed, but for the most part, it really is the most wonderful time of the year.

For some reason, I am more excited than usual this year. I look forward to the singing and carols, the lights, the decorations, the smells and last, but not least, the giving. Perhaps that is because this year we have no really huge plans. We aren’t traveling anywhere for the holidays and it allows us to just be and reflect. Most of all, I’m excited about the prospect of giving back to the community. I know what you are thinking …this is something that we can do all year round. You’re right. And perhaps I will try to do more throughout the year but at least this is a start.

So if I can leave you with something now, think about what this season means to you and what you want to enjoy or reflect on. Make it happen and just be.

Stormy November Paranormal-Scope

I don’t have this snow yet. Whew! But rains have definitely come and will again.

Gremlins are infamous for wrecking machinery. Before the winter gets worse, it’s wise to check all your appliances, especially anything necessary.

Taurus:
Goblins are well aware of the upcoming gift-giving season. Making a list and checking it twice is a good way to avoid overspending.

Gemini:
June bugs are completely confused. They should be safe and warm in their burrows under the soil. Check over your house and make any repairs before bad weather hits. Get batteries for flashlights.

Cancer:
Griffins are landing and making their cave homes cozy. What can you do to make your home more fun and cozy?

Leo:
Unicorns love being a symbol of hope. Sometimes when things aren’t going the best, you have to do your best anyway and just hope. Hope gives strength.

Virgo:
Mermaids rise to the surface to hear the choirs sing. They are very fond of music. Time to expand your music collection.

Libra
Sirens are seductive and their song is an illusion. They were some of the original con artists. Beware anything that appears too good to be true.

Scorpio:
An angel is standing silently not wearing their wings as people walk past. People are more than you think they are. Be open to making new friends.

Sagittarius:
Pixies are busy with the faery dust. They want to dust everything. Don’t forget to go through and dust your home.

Capricorn:
Dragons soar into the rain and then above it. The world is so serene when gazed upon at that height. Soar with your dreams. Don’t give up your aspirations!

Aquarius:
Werewolves are all about family. Plan a reunion. Go out to breakfast. Visit a cousin. Gather with friends. Don’t lose touch with those you love.

Pisces:
A vampire is walking down your street. Having lived a long, long life, They still admire the holiday lights in the neighborhood. Enjoy life. Make memories.

There are just so many things to do now with the Winter Holidays upon us. Above is my series Young Supernaturals of New York. There will be at least 4 books when the series is done.

Writing Tools: Writing a series is about new adventures for established characters and letting them grow in front of an audience. For the reader, every book in a series is like coming home.

Consider how you feel when you sit down in front of the TV and watch a favorite show. You relax. You accept the characters and are curious about what is going to happen to them next. It is the same feeling when you read a book series.

Have you noticed how things get all rushed and befuddled this time of year? I make lists of everything now as it is too easy to forget things. I combine all the sticky notes into one long note and cross things off as I go. Life Tools: Crossing off items gives a feeling of accomplishment and shows that you are getting closer to your goal.

November Unicorns Paranormal-Scope

Unicorns sometimes take little holiday trips just for fun. Have you tried it?

Taurus:
Unicorns dance among the fall leaves. They understand that like the trees, humans too go through transformations.

Gemini:
Unicorns can feel the softness in the winds when relationships are formed. You may meet someone new or an event will deepen a treasured relationship.

Cancer:
Unicorns are very fond of little pug dogs, proving that friends come in all shapes and sizes. Smile and see who you might meet.

Leo:
Unicorns have traveled many paths. One was even an artist of some mystery. She painted with her hooves. Explore your creativity and see where it leads.

Virgo:
Unicorns have long memories of when the world was sweet and tender. Spend time enjoying some of your favorite memories. Perhaps make a scrapbook.

Libra
Unicorns are often solo but ’tis the season to accept invitations to parties and events. Go out and enjoy yourself.

Scorpio:
On occasion, the unicorn’s horn will point to gold or other legal tender. Opportunities for a second income may come your way. As always, evaluate them carefully.

Sagittarius:
Unicorns enjoy a good pampering. Have you pampered yourself lately?

Capricorn:
Unicorns retreat from social activities when they need to heal. This is your healing time. Don’t fight it. Rest your body.

Aquarius:
Unicorns often do voluntary service for their community like purifying a polluted well. Pick something easier that you would enjoy!

Pisces:
The Unicorn often follows the sun on new adventures. So much awaits you: courses, books, events, day trips, journeys, and more. All you have to do is choose.

Right now I am blurry as I write to you. I have RSV. I should have gotten the vaccine as soon as I heard about it. The cough is hideous and body-wracking. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

“Respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious. Infants and older adults are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization. Upcoming Online Party By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I love online parties. A lot of people can sign in and regardless of who you want to talk to or when you sign in, you can scroll through and comment on anything or anyone. There will be contests at this party, so you can even enter any and all contests. What fun!

I’m going to be on from 12-2. Secretly, I will be on longer than that to join in the fun with the other authors. But during my time slot, I’m going to play some games and host two contests. When it comes to contests, I set up the deadline for noon the next day. In that way, when you come home from work or even get back on after the party is over, the contests are still live to enter.

Real Life is Complicated

Real relationships are complicated. This is something that I have learned with time, and as such it has increased my expectations with what I read, especially if I am reading fiction. I also think this is one reason that romance novels sometimes are given too little credit. These novels tend to focus more on the beginnings of a relationship where everything is new. They also tend to focus on the romance, hence being called romance novels.

This is not always the case though. Some novels do give a bit more background as to how our main characters have lived and developed overtime. Romance may be part of the plot, but not all of the plot. These novels are usually longer as you need time to develop the stories and background. They may also not always have a happy ending, and that can be one distinction from your typical romance novels.

I personally believe that this world needs both types of novels, and the many other types that are out there. I have gravitated to the shorter romance novels in the past, and yes, I love romantic comedies in my movies as well. There is so much out there in the world that can be so depressing. Sometimes we simply need a little bit of happiness and a lighthearted couple hours to change how we are feeling. Other times we are looking to get deeply lost in the world of our characters and we want more depth and we are OK with a plethora of emotions. They serve different purposes.

Life however is truly complex and full of layers. Real relationships can be volatile and unpredictable and may change over time. It is rarely all happiness for us in life but that is okay as we learn from life’s highs and lows. It is also very difficult to write this depth and complexity but perhaps it is a challenge I’m willing to take up.
