Life & Writing Tools: Love Concepts, Part 3 By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Hobbies are a fun, relaxing love concept. I’m focusing on those things we do and what we collect. Hobbies are an expression of self-love and self-care. You might enjoy golfing, bowling, fishing, knitting, crocheting, collecting figurines or movie posters, setting up dioramas of your town or a battlefield, and more. A hobby is something that is not a profession of yours. An example would be, such as; an amateur private investigator in a story. Amateur means not getting paid for it. Professional means getting paid. No matter what you collect or do for a hobby, it makes you feel good inside. How a hobby makes you feel is the important part.

Above is part of my dragon collection. Of course, there are a few things that aren’t dragons that have snuck into the bottom shelf of my tri-corner cabinet. (Laughs).

How can hobbies relate to writers?

A hobby can be a part of character development. A hobby in common can bring a couple or friends together.A hobby could be integral to the story plot. A hobby can bring in readers who also have that hobby and are interested in a story that includes it.A hobby can given insight not only about a hero but also a villain.

A Windy Paranormal-Scope

March is a month that can’t make up its mind, so the winds blow.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
The Phoenix soars on the changing winds. Communication is key for you this week. Talk and socialize.

Taurus:
Werewolves can scent change in the wind even if they can’t figure out what the change is. Be patient and stay calm.

Gemini:
Pegasus follows his passion in the sky. Your choices are limitless. Find your passion!

Faeries are genius when it comes to networking and getting projects done. Start networking now.

Elves travel when the wind changes. Plan a trip to somewhere new.

Sprites usually run away from conflicts. Sometimes conflicts cannot be avoided. Try and resolve any with a cool head.

Dragons know that self-care is vitally important. Don’t ignore appointments. Keep them. Discuss your exercise regimen with your physician.

Sagittarius:
Goblins are true lovers of the home. Consider making some changes and improvements.

Capricorn:
Mermaids keep a journal of their adventures, travels, and the treasure they’ve found. Do the same!

Aquarius:
Shapeshifters love doing new projects but are keen on checking their budget. Go over your finances and make some decisions on the plans you have.

Pisces:
Griffins pause when life choices are ahead. Plans are carefully made. The winds of change will bring something new to you so be prepared.

Life & Writing Tools: Love Concepts, Part 2 By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Today is my wedding anniversary and it’s officially 45 years now. How does love endure?

Sometimes love doesn’t endure. People part and move on with their lives.

But at other times, you look deep inside the other person and deep inside yourself and you just know. I wish I could give you a formula on when love endures. There isn’t one. All the ones celebrating long-term anniversaries have different stories to tell.

In a lot of cases it’s like a romance novel. The couple meet. They hit snags and sometimes very big obstacles in their path. They separate. But the ache is there. One just can’t be without the other, so they fight for their love. They won’t give up the fight no matter what.

It’s called Unconditional Love when you love someone no matter what. There are no strings on it. If there are you learn fairly quickly to cut those strings, those conditions. There is something about the other person that when you’re in their presence, you feel happy and safe. You won’t necessary know why.

How does love endure past the magic of beginning? I’m going to say that’s magic too. When you look at the person you will see them as they are, but you’ll always see them as they were. Growing together is an experience similar to the romance novel example with the obstacles. Life is made of obstacles and you work together to get past them. It’s not a cakewalk once you’re married. There’s always something.

But that’s life! There will always be something. That’s what make life interesting. We’re learning and growing together. Secret: That’s what makes grandparents wise. (Laughs)

So whether you’re writing a romance novel and/or living life, don’t be hemmed in by the obstacles. When the magic remains, a couple becomes a team that finds love every day, sometimes in a new day, but always every day.

Happy 45th Anniversary to my husband and True Love!

I’m Back

Hello all! First off, I’d like to apologize for my absence. I started off the year fine and then was bombard by a slew of “gifts” my children brought home. Usually, I’m not one to get sick easily but this cold and flu season has been a doozy. Needless to say, my household is back to being healthy.

So what have I been up to besides recovering? I’d love to tell you something exciting but it simply wouldn’t be the truth. I will say I’ve been doing a lot of thinking (as usual) and watching a lot of Korean dramas. I’ve even taken up Korean on Duolingo because I’d like to know what they are saying without constantly having to read the subtitles. It’s a lot harder than my days back in school trying to learn Spanish!

Given all my watching of shows, I have to say Netflix does a great job of keeping that content coming. As a writer, I feel it is very easy to live in day dreams sometimes. We can often play out different scenes around us as we watch life happen. As such, it is impressive to see such diversity in the way of content.
For me, the Korean dramas have appealed due to some of their innocence and the focus on a sense of community. Perhaps this is because community is something I find difficult to establish these days simply because we are all constantly busy and not willing to slow down.

Almost Spring Paranormal-Scope

Yesterday was like a Spring day! Today it’s a little cooler and rain is in the forecast. I have been looking for the telltale signs. I didn’t see any Robins looking for worms. I didn’t see any daffodils. But I am hopeful. I hope you are too.

Pegasus enjoys the wind beneath his wings. Treasure every past and present good times you have with those close. Consider making a photo album of fun.

Cancer:
Faeries are wearing their best gossamer. It’s time to go through the wardrobe and toss the worn and outdated. Keep one hippie outfit for the 60s party.

Leo:
Elves are the historians of the world. They don’t care about politics only the status of the natural world. Plan a getaway in nature. Take photos.

Virgo:
Gnomes are raking and clearing the broken tree limbs away. If you don’t have a yard or garden, then make your home clutter free.

Libra
Sprites may be fast but they always slow down to smell the roses. Take more time in your life to appreciate beauty.

Scorpio:
Dragons keep the home fires burning even in bad weather. Since the weather is so changeable, get the things you would need in an emergency.

Sagittarius:
Goblins are going over the budget again. Do the same. You have some big expenses coming your way.

Capricorn:
Mermaids love to sing. Join a choir or expand your CD music collection.

Aquarius:
Shapeshifters are flexible and adapt well to change. Change is in the wind. Be ready to adapt.

Pisces:
Griffins enjoy the silence of mountaintops. They love to the view. Plan a trip to see your favorite view.

Love is like fog. You’re not sure what is there at the beginning of the relationship. You have to wait it out to undercover what’s real and what’s not.

Sometimes relationships are not easy to define. Again you have to wait it out.

I call this a ‘Life and Writing Tools’ because it relates to both! You’ll see what I mean.

Love! Let’s ask some questions and see where it takes us.

Do you believe in Love at First Sight? Are you the kind of person that trusts their gut? I did a poll among romance readers. Even though most did not believe in love at first sight, there were those that did. They did because it had happened to them. Do you bring heart-felt expectations to the relationship? We all do to some extent based on our personalities. Is this a kind person? Do they have a pet? Do they love music? What hobbies do they enjoy? (You can tell a lot about a person when you meet their cat or dog or cat and dog.) Do you bring practical expectations to the relationship? Do they have a job and what kind is it? Do they own a house? Do they own a car? Are they rich, poor, or somewhere in the middle?Do you like the same things? Are you different in lots of ways? Do you like that?Are you willing to invest your time with an open mind to know the person better?Have you been burnt in a relationship? This is going to frame what you don’t want in a person.

These questions and more are important for all of us when forming relationships, especially those romantic relationships that become marriages.

My parents met on Easter and married on Labor Day (Mon., Sept. 2). I’ve been married for 45 years. My husband and I met in November, were engaged the following November, and married in March. Some people are clear about what they want in another person faster. Either way can work.

Being in the 40s degrees F. may seem warmer to some, but I need more.

Pegasus soars. You can too. Hand out business cards to get your name around. Befriend someone who has been in the business longer and ask for advice.

Faeries love learning more about themselves. Spend some time in self-reflection. Journal or paint or sketch.

Elves sometimes need to focus on their assets. Are they expending energy on the wrong things? Are you? This pertains to money as well.

Virgo:
Gnomes know that sometimes you cannot do things alone. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Libra
Sprites are fast at almost everything, except for Spring Cleaning! Start your cleaning by listing priorities.

Scorpio:
Dragons are known for their creativity. It’s a secret! Express yourself through the arts. Have fun!

Sagittarius:
Goblins aren’t always tied up with money. Sometimes they enjoy going out with friends. It doesn’t have to be big. Get together and get pizza.

Capricorn:
Mermaids are great with compasses. They always find true North. Stay true to your goals. Do that by focusing your work.

Aquarius:
Shapeshifters know that enhancing themselves with a new outfit or simply going to the doctor can work wonders on their health and self-awareness. Do what you need to be the best you.

Pisces:
Griffins are devoted. Now is your chance to be devoted to a project and see it though to the finish. It will be worth it.

About Billionaire Max By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Vampire King Max returns to the city he helped build to find love and stop an ancient evil. Can he do it in time?

People ask me who my favorite character is all the time. I don’t have a favorite, but I do have a prominent character who plays a part in nearly every one of my vampire books. He stood in the shadows watching at first. When I approached him in a dream, he would simply smile and say, “Do that person’s book first.” So I did. (I write all my books from my dreams.)

Not only is Max Vander Meer very private about himself but so are the characters that know him. Vampire David Hilliard knows him but carefully does not reference him in The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais. In A Vampire for Christmas, Trevor is an Arnhem Knight but again does not reference Max. Later, we discover that the Arnhem Knights were created by Max.

His introduction only happens in Vampire King of New York. After that he’s been in every one of my vampire books playing a supporting character role.

What do we know about the vampire who is a billionaire many times over and one of the richest men on Earth? What do we know about the man who used to be a Viking!

Does Max want wealth?
Max doesn’t really care about money. Over his thousand and more years of life, he has acquired wealth to achieve a goal. He gives money to:

Does Max want power?
Max knows that absolute power corrupts absolutely. He’s had that experience and doesn’t need it anymore. He doesn’t acquire countries, even though he is the Vampire King for various places. His name is often enough to keep villains at bay. When trouble starts, he goes back and will fight for the people under his care if necessary.

Max also knows what it is to lose everything in life, to have nothing, and to be alone!

Does Max crave human blood?
No. He prefers animal or fish blood. He has made vampiric laws for New York, where it is illegal for vampires to drink human blood unless it is donated and in an IV bag. The Arnhem Society has bottled and bagged blood available to vampires in need.

As King what does Max do? He is the head of the Arnhem Knights, that take an oath to prevent human death in New York caused by vampires and to assist supernaturals in need.He is the judge who presides over a court when a vampire has committed a crime. He believes in being fair and having all the information before coming to a decision. He watches over the Arnhem Society building and its occupants since is a sanctuary for vampires. He originated the courses new vampires in New York take such as How to Look and Act Human, What Are the Vampiric Laws of New York, and What Does A Vampire Do In An Emergency.

As the CEO of a multinational corporation, what does Max do?VMeer Industries is not a publicly traded company, and Max has the controlling shares on purpose, since he uses it to fund the Arnhem Society and many of his philanthropic projects in New York state.He travels to the two other headquarters from time to time and attends their meetings, even though the main headquarters is his VMeer Industries building in Manhattan. Max knows every employee and their family. Max is generous with his employees in salary and benefits. If an employee is having a problem, they can contact him directly for help. He always helps. He employs mostly humans.

Is Max a playboy?
Not really. From time to time, he has dated and the word is out that his champagne baths are lots of fun. He treats the women he has dated with respect. Within a date or two, Max knows if she is the one or not. Max is actually looking for his one person, his wife-to-be. Most of the time, Max is about the business of keeping his unique vampiric world together.

Max was a Viking?
Yes, he was the captain of a longship! They pillaged and plundered villages for gold and anything they could sell mostly. However, Max did make a fatal mistake in not sending advance scouts to one particular village. I’ll let you read about it in Vampire King of New York. Now he knows that everything isn’t always what it seems to be.

Max is a widower.
Those of you who have lost a loved one knows how Max feels. He tries to occupy his mind with business and his vampire children.

Do humans know about Max?
Only a trusted few. There’s a saying that ‘to know him is to love him.’ That is certainly true of Max. He inspires with his caring about others first. His few trusted humans would never give him up. No, they are not under a hypnosis. Max is their friend and is there for them when needed. Max looks human all of the time and manages to age himself when speaking on camera or before reporters about a charity he is supporting.

Grateful for Sunshine Paranormal-Scope

Temperatures are still frigid in Connecticut but having sunshine is so nice. Spring will be here before we know it.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
The Phoenix is making fire circles. Their form of art. Fun some fun with an art expression of your choice.

Taurus:
Werewolves plan their careers so it benefits themselves and their pack. It’s time to network and pass around your business card. Attend a business conference in your field.

Gemini:
Pegasus travels to make new friends. Be open to meeting new people.

Cancer:
Faeries enjoy education! Consider taking a course to further your career or in a subject you’ve always been interested in.

Leo:
Elves are great listeners. In this way they can get to the whole story, even if it means listening to more than one person. Listening is an excellent skill to practice.

Virgo:
Gnomes tend to always be in the company of friends and/or family.

Libra
Sprites toss negativity away. Be positive and embrace the week. Have fun with friends and make new ones too.

Scorpio:

Life & Writing Tools: More Personal Cozy By Susan Hanniford Crowley

Even though the ground hogs saw no shadow which means Spring is on its way, it’s been snowing and so cozy is our word, warmth, and method of relaxing at the moment.

Here are some more ways to personally relax. You will note that many in the lists have been chosen because they are soft to the skin or fingers or toes.

APPAREL – The key word here is soft which makes you feel warm and comfortable. I have omitted flannel pajamas, because some companies will put ‘flannel’ on their pajamas because they are plaid but they are not soft and warm and are usually thin weight and not the old-fashion flannel we are looking for.

Soft fuzzy socksSoft blanketsSoft sweatshirt, undershirts, etc. Lounge pants that are soft. Some are fleece. Bamboo can be surprisingly soft. Shawls that are soft.Bed jackets which I know are old-fashioned, but people did wear them when the cold seeped inside. Sweaters that are soft to the touchBelieve it or not, there are hoodies that are soft out thereSlippers that are soft to the touch

WRITING – In this list, I am not only putting tools on the list but furniture and decor.

Pens – While they don’t have to be soft, they do have to fit comfortably in your hand while you write. Too short a pen can cramp up your hand. The width should be just so. A pen should feel solid but not too heavy. It should help your writing flow. Currently, I use three pens: Uniball Deluxe Fine Point with Black Ink, Big Diamond topped pens with extra ink cartridges, and my light green Lamy Fountain Pen that I received as a gift. Journals – There may be times when you just can’t write on a laptop. A journal and a good pen can inspire you further. Touch the cover. Does it feel right to you? Does the design and image on the cover inspire you? It can be hardboard with a shiny cover, fabric, leather. It doesn’t matter as long as it makes you comfortable and inspires you.Lap Desk. Before you buy this, consider how much weight you want to put on your lap. Discomfort can stop is you are squirming. I recommend that you try it before you buy it.Other Devices – I knew an author who for circumstances sake wrote her book piece by piece through emails she sent herself. Phones, tablets, and sort of mini laptops and electronic notebooks are all possible when considering where you are and what access you have to larger computers. Sometimes if the ideal environment or tool is not available, to comfort your heart when you need to write with what you have. Chairs – The ideal chair comforts you and supports your back while you write.Other sitting options – Sometimes a chair isn’t practical at the moment. Sit on a sofa but make sure you have enough pillow back support. Sit on a window seat for a time for inspiration. If the weather is good, sit in a lounge chair, but don’t stay too long in the sun. Time yourself. Get a deck umbrella to go with that lounge chair. You have options.Decor – When people want to see where an author writes, they are also interested in seeing those things beyond the desk and chair. Posters. Paintings. I had a snow scene painted by my mom who was the professional artist known as S. Hanniford. A Mardi Gras mask. A snow globe of the Space Shuttle. A cup filled with an assortment of Egyptian pens, vampire pens, etc. The Cup – Authors usually drink at their desks. The cup. Be sure to have it in a safe place so a spill will not endanger or laptop or other devices and writing materials. Consider a cup with a lid or a water bottle with a top you screw on each time. Better yet set up a little table and chair by a window. Sit there away from your desk for a time to enjoy your beverage and rest your eyes by looking out a window.

These are some more ideas for cozy! Cozy has come to mean more things than comfort, warm, and safety to all of us. Enjoy your life!
