Beach Read: The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais By Susan Hanniford Crowley

The dreams for The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais came around the same time as When Love Survives. I had titled it The Vampire’s Wish. My editor said it was too generic of a title and didn’t give any idea of what the book was about. I joked that it’s about the stormy love life of Laura Cordelais. She said, “That’s it!” There’s a lesson in this: don’t joke about the title with your editor.

Some of you know that a new David & Laura novella/mini book came out around Christmas 2023 as a special edition. It’s small so it can easily be packed in a purse. It is small but mighty in story.

The Stormy Love Life of Laura Cordelais begins with Vampire David Hilliard asking God for a true love in his life. Their meeting and beginning of their relationship is stormy to say the least. David thinks that he can somehow prove his love by taking her to New Orleans (her family home). There are elements he did not account for. Voodoo. Her mystical family heritage. A mystery never solved. The prejudice against vampires by the magical folk of New Orleans. The danger that awaits them and will tear them apart!

Excerpt:
Laura struggled through the dark and burst through a great light. She gasped for breath and it filled her. Warmth spread through her every part, then a surge of energy she didn’t understand. Her heart beat. Differently. Odd. Different from any feeling she’d ever had. Her eyelashes fluttered and then in the dim light of a strange windowless room, she saw a man’s face.

His dark, curly hair framed his chiseled features. What struck her most were his dark, fathomless eyes. I can get lost in those eyes and never want to leave.

He smiled.

She flushed. I hope he can’t hear what I’m thinking.

I can.

She sat up, smiling with embarrassment. “You pulled me out of the river?”

“Yes.”

“Thank you.” Laura trembled. “I don’t understand. I was dying.”

“You were very badly injured in the fall. I was going to take you to the hospital, but you said, ‘No hospital.’ That you’d keep trying to kill yourself.” His jaw tightened. “I couldn’t bear the idea of your death. Please, forgive me, but I couldn’t let you die.” He gazed deeply into her eyes.

Laura moved her tongue inside her mouth and came across the fangs.

“Oh, my God!” She tried to sit up, but he pushed her gently down.

“Don’t get up just yet. You’re still healing.”

“You made me a vampire?” Every tale she’d heard as a child in New Orleans rushed back to her. Vampires were monsters. “Now I’m a monster!” Anger flushed through her. How dare he make her this! He had no right. She seethed.

“No. You are not a monster. Neither am I. I gave you a life. It’s your choice how you live it.”

Then another emotion unexpectedly filled her, when she gazed up into his eyes. I couldn’t bear the idea of your death. His tender words echoed in her entire being and soothed her broken heart, as if he’d kissed her lips without touching her. She looked at him with wonder, reached up and caressed the young beard on his chin. He smiled and she could see his fangs now. Strangely, she wasn’t frightened.

“We must do the last part.” He bit into his arm just inside the elbow and put it against her mouth.

“No.” She pushed his arm away.

“You need it to stop the hunger from possessing you. Just close your eyes and drink.”

The blood oozed into her mouth, as he pressed his arm against her lips. At first, she choked and sputtered but then finally accepted it. Laura tried not to think about what it really was. The warmth reminded her of ginger tea with a citrus tang.

“Since I am your sire, my blood will give you a balanced mind. You will not need to feed again until tonight.”

After a few more minutes, she pushed him away. The wound on his arm healed before her eyes. Wide-eyed, she smiled. “I feel so strong and well. I don’t ache or hurt anywhere.” Then his reference to being her sire struck her. “So you own me now!” Her anger flared again along with her strength. She slapped him.

“What was that for?” He held his hand to his cheek.

“Oh, I don’t know. You made me a vampire and now you own me. Take your pick.”

David gazed upward. “This isn’t going well.”

“Who are you talking to?”

“God.”

Laura scoffed. “A vampire talks to God? Does God answer you?”

David frowned at her and sighed. ”God apparently has one hell of a sense of humor.”

“What does that mean?”

“Never mind. Let’s get back to the subject at hand. No, I do not own you. I have no claim on you whatsoever. You are free to decide where you want to be and with whom. I’ll help you get started, that’s all.” With every word, he seemed more uncomfortable. “We do have a blood tie though, so if you ever need my help, just think of me and I’ll come. I’ll find you.”

Her anger dissipated. Laura enjoyed seeing him vulnerable. And he didn’t hit her back. She smiled. “I don’t know your name.”

“I’m David Hilliard.”

This time she gently touched his face. “I’m Laura Cordelais.”

He held her hand to his cheek and closed his eyes.

Laura gasped as she realized her surroundings. “Do you live here?”

“No.” He chuckled. “I just needed to get you out of the sun. I have an apartment.”

“Well, that’s a relief. I thought I’d have to live in a cemetery.”

They both laughed.

Laura looked around at the grim tomb. A spider crawled up the stone wall nearest her, and she trembled. “I’m afraid of small, closed spaces. And bugs.”

He enclosed her in his arms. “Don’t be afraid. As soon as it’s dark, we’ll leave.”

Her mouth was so close to his, she could almost taste him. Then he pressed his firm lips against hers.

Hmm. He tastes of honey. I love honey.

Their fangs knocked together. Laura giggled nervously.

“Shall we try that again?” he suggested.

She nodded.

David gently took her chin and tilted her head slightly. Then his lips possessed hers again. Laura tingled from head to toe and wondered if a vampire was capable of love. She hoped David was.

When their lips parted, Laura frowned.

“I’m still angry with you.”

“Really? You don’t sound that angry.”

“I’m furious with you. I mean you made me a vampire.”

“Are you furious?” He carefully pushed a hair off her face and kissed her forehead.

“Now that’s not fair. Are you using your hypnotic powers on me?”

“No. I want everything between us to be real.” He kissed her left temple and moved down her jaw line. His mouth caressed her lips. His tongue rubbed her fangs.

Forget-Me-Not Paranormal-Scope

Sometimes life gets so busy! Here we are with sunshine and warmings and the paranormal-scope.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Faeries sense it in the air. So many things are happening so fast, they tend to forget the things on their list to do. Get together with friends/family. Put it on the top of the list.

Taurus:
Griffins are cautious with their money. Lending money can be troublesome this week.

Gemini:
Elves archive their past adventures but they know to move forward in life means letting go of baggage from the past. Let it go.

Cancer:
Sprites are fearless. Getting past your fears could improve things a lot. Don’t let your fears prevent you from doing something your heart wants.

Leo:
Salamanders have friends and close friends. This is a great time to go to social events and meet some new people.

Virgo:
Some vampires don’t work and mainly socialize, so they don’t necessarily understand having balance in their lives. Remember to balance your work and personal life so both do well.

Libra
Hellhounds are led by their feet. You are feeling that need to travel. If you don’t have the funds, start small with day trips.

Scorpio:
Mermaids know what it is to feel anchored. You are holding onto things that are holding you in place. Declutter your house, so if you want something new you have the room to enjoy it.

Sagittarius:
Werewolves love meeting people. Right now, someone special could be coming your way. Be open to meeting new people.

Capricorn:
Sirens sing to get something. You sing for enjoyment. Do some self-wellness and heal from past hurts to move on to better times. Take care of your health.

Aquarius:
Shapeshifters enjoy concerts, plays, and indulging their hobbies. Engage in an hobby you had that was fun or find a new one.

Pisces:
Dragons love their family and friends. Host a get-together to make your bonds stronger.

Beach Read: When Love Survives By Susan Hanniford Crowley

When Love Survives was my first published book in the field of romance. I received a phone call from the publisher who told me that I made her entire staff cry. She would be sending a contract.

Did I plan on writing a book about September 11? Not at all. When I woke and wrote it down, I was somewhat in shock. The actual event had happened a few years ago at that point. It evoked fear, pain, and sadness. But what I wrote also showed tremendous courage in people. Rescuing others became a priority. The dream showed a greater diversity in New York City that included paranormal and supernatural beings. It was like everyone in NYC went to the rescue.

I talked to a friend about it and he told me to write that up and send it out.

At that point in time, I wrote science fiction and fantasy short stories. They were all conveniently based in another time period and place. This hit home. I grew up mostly in Connecticut except for a short time in upstate New York and spent parts of every summer visiting my aunt and grandparents in New York City. I also had relatives that worked there. I knew all the places people were talking about on TV.

I write what I dream, and I record my dreams in my dream journal. So every book starts out handwritten. After the book was written story plot-wise, I typed it up correcting as I went along. Then I began my research into the details of that day. When I mentioned my research topic to a friend, she surprised me with a carefully wrapped collection of newspapers of September 11th. I read each one and returned them in them in the same condition of care. I went online and read people’s accounts. I read blogs and online journals. After reading everything I could, I went back to the manuscript to add in all the details.

I knew that every person that perished, every one that survived, and every rescuer was sacred. Still is. I wanted to write the story and still be respectful of all of them.

Aurora Paranormal-Scope

This weekend people in the US could have seen the Northern Lights depending on their local weather. The lights are caused by a storm on the sun.

While I am not qualified to read either stars or planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment and is not meant to guide your life.

Aries:
Faeries declutter by changing those things no longer needed to faery dust. It’s time to declutter and donate what is still usable to a charity.

Taurus:
Griffins carefully make new friends. They know some are not what they seem. Go out and make new friends but don’t jump into a relationship without the test of time.

Gemini:
Elves who are usually sure in what they want are sometimes sidetracked. A detour is fine for a fun mystery, but don’t lose sight of your goals. Stay focused.

Sprites are cheerful. Smile. Enjoy the good things that have come your way and are coming your way.

Salamanders are great at networking. This is your time to do your best and get your talent and name out there.

Vampires attribute their longevity to many thing but mostly to they graciousness when they admit they’re wrong. Be more open to differing opinions.

Hellhounds prefer being invisible socially. You don’t have to be. Get out and be seen.

Scorpio:
Mermaids know feelings run deep but letting hurt wash away is the best thing. They hold no grunges. Let past hurts go.

Werewolves enjoy redoing their home, getting rid of worn-out and broken things. It creates a feeling of more space and freedom. Try it.

The Adventure Called Second Life By Susan Hanniford Crowley

When I was invited to be their special guest to Fantasy Faire’s Literary Festival 2024, they offered to make me a special avatar.

There I am with my a shoulder pet dragon I named Coral. If you are a reader of my novel Lady Fallon’s Dragons, the Lyra are the same size as Coral. I look like I’m 19 but I didn’t complain. Smiles. I took this photo on my last day there.

It was an amazing adventure. Everything in Second Life is created by the people who become avatars and live their 2nd life there. It is stunningly fantastic. As I walked through Fantasy Faire, every region was different but still exciting. It was like living inside a painting of incredible detail and just gorgeous. People created all this. And people here live through avatars which could be faeries, elves, dragons, vampires, robots, small cats, and so many other creatures. They can also be humans! Ha!

I also attended the Vampire Ball where everyone was remarkably well dressed as well as being unique. Sorry I didn’t take more photos.

It was amazing fun and for me a learning experience on how to talk in a virtual work which is different from Zoom or Skye. It was also a very freeing experience in being maybe what I am more on the inside than on the outside.

May the 4th Always Be With You By Susan Hanniford Crowley

I like May 4th because I get to say May the 4th be with you! (Yes, a Star Wars reference.) This Saturday, May 4th (being the first Saturday in May) was Free Comic Book day. We went to Sarge’s Comics and Games in New London! In addition to getting some free comics, I bought an Elvira figure. I’m a big Elvira fan. I think she’s funny as all get out. I also bought anime pins.

I’m the one with the glasses. That’s my daughter Cera. She is also a big comics/graphic novel fan. After our shopping, we were hungry. Soooooooo

We went to Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London. It was nice in the sun but cold in the shade. I love their lobster. We also brought home lobster bisque.

All in all, it was a fun day! Now I’m back to writing.

Robin Sees You Paranormal-Scope

Sprites can’t stop dancing. Move any part of you to music and enjoy the feeling flowing through you.

Salamanders spend a lot of time staring at fires. Don’t do this unless you’re grilling barbeque. Going out for a meal could do you a lot of good.

Vampires know how to chill. Just relax. Once you’re home, set up a time when you’re not required to do anything. Enjoy that time.
