HAVE A HEART FOR ANIMALS
As the temperatures drop remember…IF IT’S TOO COLD FOR YOU IT’S TOO COLD FOR THEM ! Bring your pets inside. Every year many animals freeze to death in the winter. Your housepets were not meant to live outdoors. If you see an animal being mistreated speak up…save a life!

WINTER BREAK ?
In many places the cold weather has hit with a vengeance. Add to that the extra traffic, shopping and chores at this time of year and you might be tempted to take a winter break from your exercise routine. Even indoor activities can take a backseat on days when you don’t want to drive to the gym or if you have to make room for extra errands. Don’t wait until you have time for a full workout. Fit exercise into little pockets in your day.
During our Hot for the Holidays class we had 17 days of exercise suggestions, both yoga and pilates (Thank you Coach Kecia) that you can do at home. There are recommendations for various fitness levels. Some of these exercises are perfectly geared to help you de-stress.

SHOW A LITTLE KINDNESS
There are many ways to be financially generous at this time of year. If you have the means, and the willingness, to give that’s wonderful. But please don’t neglect to notice the many ways that you can help that are right under your nose and won’t cost a dime. There might be a mom behind you in line at the grocery store who is cramming in one more errand before she picks up the kids. Do you have a little extra time? Let her go first. Do you know a single parent who would appreciate a hand on a random weeknight?
Spreading kindness could be something as simple as smiling at the mom whose child is having a meltdown. She’s getting plenty of judgement. Be the kind voice in the crowd. Everyone has a need for kindness.

GMOs and Colony Collapse Disorder
When it comes to what you buy and what you choose to eat we advocate learning all you can. This recent article discusses a possible connection between a planting of GMO corn and the death of millions of bees.

SPA ON A BUDGET
There are so many reasons to create your own hand and body scrubs.
With the dry winter weather it’s especially nice to have something that will exfoliate and moisturize. ~ What goes ON your body is as important as what goes IN your body so making this all natural scrub let’s you relax, knowing there are no chemicals or unnatural ingredients. ~ Saving money on this gives you a little more in your pocket to spend on other things. ~ This makes a great hostess gift that’s less likely to be duplicated.
This is a very forgiving recipe so don’t worry too much about exact measurement.
4 cups kosher salt (an alternative is to use up the white sugar you’ve eliminated from your diet)
1 cup almond oil
5-10 drops essential oil
There are many scents to choose from with the oils. You can make a eucalyptus/tea tree blend for a soothing healing bath scrub. Lavender oil is wonderfully relaxing for the bath. Peppermint is invigorating and perfect for this time of year, especially for gift giving. Or close up the sugar with a sprinkle of cinnamon and some cloves for a couple days before making this. Or some citrus peels. Vanilla beans will also add a nice light scent. Just discard them before making your scrub.
In a large bowl mix the salt and the oil (1/4 cup at a time) until it’s the consistency of wet sand. Add the essential oil and stir well.
You can fill small jars and tie the lids with twine, tucking a candy cane, or small ornament into the tie. Or top with fabric scraps before tying.
This is handy to keep by the sink for use on your hands as well.

MAKING MEMORIES
Marilu has been at the forefront of healthy living and with her phenomenal memory she has been actively working to raise awareness of how memory informs our lives from birth throughout old age. This article was recently featured on The Marilu Henner Show. It reinforces what Marilu has been saying for years; memories, specifically the retention of them, is tied to our emotions.
This piece is from Parents.com. Naturally if you have young children you will enjoy reading this but everyone can learn something from this information.

LIGHTEN UP
With all of the pies and cookies at this time of year it’s always great to find something light to end the meal. This Chia Seed pudding is vegan and gluten free. We think you’ll enjoy being able to whip up a nice little treat that won’t weigh you down. It’s a nice surprise for guests.
1 cup almond milk
1/2 cup soft fruit (we recommend berries or peaches)
1/4 cup chia seeds
Pour chia seeds into the bottom of a medium sized bowl. Place milk and fruit in a blender and whip until fruit is well blended. (If using frozen fruit allow it to thaw completely first) Pour over the chia seeds in the bowl and whisk vigorously. Transfer to a shallow serving dish or individual bowls. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.
