QUINOA
Sadly, many of us have been conditioned to believe that we need large amounts of protein and that it should come from slabs of beef. That simply isn’t true. A plant based diet can give you all of the protein that your body needs. One ingredient that can add texture and protein to your meals is quinoa. Quinoa is a complete protein seed with 8 grams of protein per cooked cup. It’s also a great source of iron, fiber, magnesium and phosphorus and a good source of manganese as well.
You can enjoy it in place of pasta, as a hot cereal, as a cold salad, or added to soup. Use it in place of rice in stir fries or as a base for veggie stew.

How to Donate
We know that our Marilu.com family makes up one of the kindest communities in existence. We love the way our members give back. In celebration of that we’re going to share some of our best tips for making use of items you no longer need. Most of us are fortunate enough to have more than we need. There’s probably a blouse in your closet that makes you look washed out and so it takes up space and spends season after season on a hanger.
There’s no reason why that blouse can’t be donated if it’s in good shape. Take a look at what else is going to waste in the hope that “one day” it will be the right choice.
One of the biggest hurdles that homeless individuals face is the lack of a suitable wardrobe in order to go on job interviews. Check out:
www.coalitionforthehomeless.org
Or call your local municipal authorities, or do a search on line to find out what’s needed in your own community.
Before you donate take the time to look over your items for signs of wear. Missing buttons and broken zippers should be repaired BEFORE you donate. If the fabric is torn in an area that can’t be well mended, or has a stain that won’t come out then it isn’t suitable for donation. Respect the future owners of these items.
Another tip: keep a basket, a bin, or a shopping bag in a convenient location such as your closet or laundry room. When you decide that an item is in good shape but not being used enough for you to keep it, place it in the container right away instead of waiting for a closet clean out day. Keeping up with your wardrobe in this way helps others and makes your own life more manageable.

Before the weekend rolls around….
You might want to lay in the ingredients you’ll need for a yummy VEGAN seven layer dip. This is a great idea for parties at your home and it’s also great to take along with you when you’re invited to bring a side. It’s healthy and versatile and you can tweak it and get creative. Use corn chips or pita chips and definitely add some fresh veggies for dipping. This version is from our friends at The Huffington Post.

You can also make this in smaller batches and pack it in lunches. Besides being nutritious it’s a great way to make lunch more interesting.

Repurpose!
No one wants to contribute to landfills and let’s face it…sometimes we save things just because they’re too nice to get rid of. We LIKE them but we don’t know what to DO with them. That doesn’t have to be the beginning of your life as a hoarder. You can repurpose some items to add a touch of character to your home.
Maybe you like the design on that giant mug a coworker gave you in last years grab bag but you really don’t know what to do with it. Use it to hold the small items taking up space in the kitchen drawer: the tea strainer, potato scrubber, measuring spoons etc.
Glue a small o ring or plastic curtain ring to the bottom of a seashell to make a soapdish or use the lone saucer from that old set of dishes.
Inexpensive hand lotion can look absolutely elegant in a small creamer on the bathroom counter as opposed to the plastic pump bottle it came in.

MEATLESS MONDAY….some reasons why !
We’re not trying to scare you. Halloween was LAST week. But some of the information in this article from The Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine will make you stop and think. Once you know something you can’t “unlearn” it. This is clear and concise and will only take you a few minutes. If your inclination is to say “I’d rather not know.” you might be someone who particularly needs to read it. When it comes to our health we all have something that we’re trying to get away with. Don’t hide your head in the sand.

Walk your dog while helping shelter dogs! Win/Win
From our friends at The Huffington Post. This article will tell you about an app that donates between 11 and 25 cents for every mile you walk with your own dog. In that last six months more than $10,000.00 in donations have been distributed to 4,000 shelters across the U.S.

REMINDER….FALL BACK !!
Spring ahead. FALL BACK.
In most of the U.S. it’s time to set those clocks back an hour. Technically this occurs at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday but we know that those of you who plan to be asleep at that time will make the switch before you turn out the lights. Here’s a tip for those of you who have trouble adjusting to the change. Try setting the clock back a few hours before you head to bed, but after you’ve fulfilled your commitments for the day. Make the most of that extra hour and still get a good night’s sleep !

In the U.S. Halloween is a holiday dedicated mostly to dressing in costume and consuming vast amounts of candy! We’ve been sharing tips about how to handle some trick or treat situations and we invite you to scroll down this page to learn more about the teal pumpkin project (let people know if there are non food options at your home) and gain understanding for children whose special needs are not obvious but who deserve extra patience nonetheless.
A few more tips for adults and kids alike:
- Stay aware of where your kids are. If you’re taking your little ones trick or treating it’s easy to get distracted by conversation with other moms. The kids are quickly on to the next house before you know it. At the end of the day you want to come home with the same Elsa you started with!
- It goes without saying that you should check over all the candy before you let them dig in.
- If you would like to limit the amount they consume (and we HIGHLY recommend striking a balance here….do they really need BUCKETS of sugar?) you can allow them to keep a reasonable amount and “purchase” the excess. What non-sugary treats would they love to have? An extra hour before bedtime. A new book. An extra hour of television or computer time.
- Get something nutritious in their bellies before you head out the door.
- Check costumes for visibility. They should have peripheral vision and light reflective clothing or tape on their costumes.
- The above holds true for adults as well. If you’re out with your kids you also need to be visible to passing cars.
- At a party adults should be mindful of the 2:1 rule when it comes to alcohol. For every drink with alcohol that you consume have 2 glasses of water. If you’re allowing your kids to have soda it doesn’t hurt to implement this rule for that situation as well.
- When going adult parties and children’s parties it’s a good idea to eat something before you go. Do NOT show up famished. Have something healthy before you leave the house and everyone will make better choices at the party.
- Bring a dish to share so you can be sure of at least one healthy option. There are many delicious recipes to choose from in Healthy Holidays.
You don’t need to sacrifice your health OR feel deprived. It’s all about a healthy balance and smart choices!
