Thinking with Microbes - a seminar series on infection, disease and finitude

Prevailing ideas around the autonomous self are being revised in the field of biology. No longer framed as the study of self-contained entities, biology increasingly appreciates ‘individual’ animals as organised multispecies consortias living in symbiotic commune. This ecological shift in the biological sciences is also paralleled by a similar turn to the ‘non-human’ in the social sciences and humanities, and can be seen more specifically in the work of scholars affiliated with philosophical Posthumanism and other related and cognate fields such as human-animal studies, political ecology, new materialisms and multispecies ethnography. Focusing on human entanglements and dependencies with insects (Beisel, Kelly, & Tousignant, 2013; Raffles, 2010), dogs (Haraway, 2008; Kohn, 2007), meerkats (Candea, 2010), forests (Kohn, 2013), plants (Hustak & Myers, 2012) and matsutake mushrooms (Tsing, 2015), scholars have interrogated anthropocentrism by illustrating the myriad of ways in which the world we inhabit and what we are, only comes-into-being through multispecies engagements. Anthropologist and multispecies scholar, Stefan Helmreich (2014), proposes for example, that the human, Homo sapien be reconceptualised as Homo microbis, a fleshy assemblage co-produced with and through messy entanglements with our more-than-human microbial companions whom we share the world with.
As a means of thinking through the pragmatics of being kin with more-than-human others, such research has thus far tended to focus on commensal or at the very least, non-lethal others as a means of illustrating symbiotic relations that challenges the idea of human exceptionalism and atomistic self-sufficiency. From helminths to gut bacteria to palm trees and sheep, living with these more-than-human others may be problematic and inconvenient at times, but very rarely do they pose a direct threat to human life. Yet, the recent emergence of COVID-19 raises a different set of questions related to finitude - both for the virus, and for us humans. What might it mean to embrace an ‘unloved’ and ‘unloving’ other, if doing so also simultaneously threatens to obliterate one’s very own existence? Faced with a lethal and omnipresent microbe, how do we reckon with the kinds of biopolitical and microbiopolitical calculations needed to reassemble modern life? Is the eradication and/or elimination of such unfavourable microbes the only way forward? Untethered from the drive towards eradication, what then might microbes and infectious diseases have to teach us about different ways of wading through viral clouds, uncertain episto-ontological projects and proliferating utopian and apocalyptic futures?

I tried to make something similar using, first, the Lego WeDo 2.0 Robotics' Tutorial for a vehicle, but it didn't work out ... I really like the tutorial for this ... So just getting back into making Lego Robotics with WeDo 2.0 (which I have) ... and seeking to program it with Scratch3.0 programming languages, for which there aren't any tutorials ... so time to explore and innovate ...

I'd like to play through the WeDo 2.0 tutorial in a completely new & FUN way (and not somehow a self-created frustrated way :) ... which fun the WeDo1 tutorial facilitated ... but playing beyond the Tutorial some months ago didn't much emerge afterward ...There is, however, an online talk I'm attending on Thursday about Lego play & learning ... ),

What is happening, and, Houcemeddine, could you possibly begin to adapt WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in new ways per what we just talked about for 1.25 hours in the Google Meet?
And how to plan for WUaS registering students in a WUaS Wikidata / Wikibase franchise, each a Wikidata Q-item # or similarly forked Wikidata Pin # (and for 7.8 billion people eventually for these - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/20... - and other reasons).
I haven't ever been able to log in as Admin to the WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki, and also can't make the changes this new DIALOGUE BOX suggests, which changes I might be able to make if I were able to log in.

Nice to be able to see these lines clearly and by clicking through them in WikiTree.
I remember my wonderful Granny Brown (Rachel Gilbert Brown, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Janie's mother), in particular, telling us about these ancestors and relationships - and with family historian Thomas Eschweiler - at the reunion at Alden and Marianne Briscoe's Chicago townhouse in around 1988 (or 1984), and am appreciating how their representations in WikiTree and on other genealogy platforms makes them easily understandable and accessible. :) As I recall our family still has the sword of surrender from the British which Benjamin Lincoln received, OR SIMILAR - i.e. it could be the sword of another Chadbourne, after whom Fort Chadbourne in Texas is named.

(... my interpretation from yesterday:) Is it doing so in ways that no individuals or activists (eg Dr. MLK jr) in the 60s or 70s, envisioning a better world via social change, could?

About the Presentation:
This presentation provides an overview of the FDA’s research to evaluate the ability of facial coverings to reduce the spread of infection and how the FDA is developing a comprehensive risk-assessment tool to predict the probability of infection with individuals wearing a non-surgical face mask or cloth face covering; given the characteristics of non-surgical face masks, the population, and the pathogen. This presentation discusses how the filtration and leakage performance of cloth face coverings, using both experimental and computational methods, input into a risk assessment model that the FDA recently developed and is currently calibrating for COVID-19.
