Taylor,

Very nice playing of the Pibroch "Lament for Alasdair Dearg MaDonnell of Glengarry!" As I was listening to your playing again, some further thoughts came to mind which we can explore in 2 weeks - it's helpful to be able to hear the recording! Perhaps we can listen to it together on 12/31 re thinking about it in conversation too!
Congratulations to you and April on your move to Georgia, and for your upcoming baby! (My ethnographic field site is Harbin Hot Springs, so even if N and I found our way together, and to the Boston area, I might be coming back out here for field work, and she for family sometimes! On with preparing my UC Berkeley Anthropology TSWG talk about this for tomorrow - http://tourismstudies.org/news_archive/MacLeod2020.htm :).
Musical cheers, Scott

Taylor,
if you were to become a teacher and even at World Univ & Sch at the high school IB level, or college-level, or on the wiki school side of things, am curious what you think of these teaching ideas -

How are you seeing, understanding, and supporting creativity in learning for your students? Here are five guiding principles we learned from teachers. Read more here: https://t.co/7VxDM05sUz #CreativeComputing pic.twitter.com/UcEXBsiM7f

https://twitter.com/ScratchEdTeam/status/1339688197207564290?s=20 - which sound quite Karen Brennan-informed, who is a MIT Media Lab Ph.D. and a Havard Prof of Education, with a focus on Creative Computing, but which seem to relate to teaching in a lot of areas. Karen Brennan's thinking is inspiring, even as she Tweets it - https://twitter.com/karen_brennan - as a resource (since I don't think she teaches too much online outside of her degree programs with her T550 courses). And in what ways, brainstorming-wise, could WUaS grow with a kind of Celtic connection - and to facilitate the benefits of living in a city (https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarth?src=hashtag_click), yet living wherever ... and teaching many things. Thoughts, questions, ideas, suggestions?
Regards, Scott
While both my father's and my mother's last names I think came from Scottish forebears - identity-wise - .... Am curious too how a - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics?src=hashtag_click - and with even avatar bots from our ancestors, increasingly realistive, could become a way to facilitate flourishing of a kind Celtic culture, and into the future ... Thoughts?

Aging reversal via genetic engineering seems to have great potential too. Thoughts about these Tweets in this regard:

Hi Taylor,

In exploring how to proceed with lessons for Piobaireachd (and light music'), and regarding your big move to Georgia too, am thinking that Piobaireachd tutorial books would be a helpful complement. Would you like to explore using Donald MacLeod's tutorial CDs online, with Piobaireachd Society / Kilberry book sheet music - and explore through most beautiful ❤️ Piobaireachds we identify?
"The Desperate Battle of the Birds" next?

Glad you'll be able to play the Great Highland Bagpipe again in your new house in Georgia! Am enjoying making this Honey in the Bag' SCOTTISH SMALL PIPES' album ...and shall we explore the strathspey, 'The Cameronian Rant,'  soon for 'light music' - https://scottmacleodhoneyinthebagscottishsmallpipesbagpiping.bandcamp.com/track/the-cameronian-rant-s-scott-gk-macleod ?

Re aging reversal via genetic engineering, this is probably a good place to begin ~ https://youtu.be/bnCEIPQFNnk ... (again?) &  idea-wise

World Univ & SchAgenda & News

0Friendly-inspired World University and School seeks to offer free-to-students' CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric online Bachelor's degrees, in partnering with edX, and beginning in 2021. WUaS is also like Wikipedia for open, people-to-people, free wiki teaching and learning.

1WUaS Annual Meeting is on Saturday, as part of WUaS Monthly Business Meeting
WUaS seeks now:
150 undergraduate students - for free-to-students' Bachelor degrees - WUaS is seeking now, in partnering now with edX for May 1 - August 30 term.
50,000 $ is what edX seeks for interoperating their edX Dashboard with World Univ & Sch's emergent platform
7.8 billion people is the number WUaS seeks to code for, each a Wikidata Q-item # - for free, highest quality people-to-people wiki teaching and learning (and )
2.2 million employees on both wings is the number of people WUaS seeks to hire
7,117 known living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning
~200 countries (per the Olympics) as major online Universities for free-to-students' CC-4 OCW best STEAM Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, MD and IB high school degrees in each
14,000 $ per student per year (University of California instate tuition, excluding books and robotics' kits) is the amount WUaS seeks to receive re reimbursement from all ~200 countries' departments of education re WUaS's best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centricity

Here are the Minutes from WUaS's Annual Meeting last year (2019):
https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2019/11/minutes-for-annual-meeting-on-saturday.html
- but more about World Univ & Sch in my daily blog in this label - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/global%20university -

2Coding for the edX Dashboard, the ECHO Dashboard, and WUaS in G Suite for Education (for reimbursement for CC-4 best STEM OCW-centric WUaS degree programs) / WUaS Wikibase is ahead ... (and - see below- regarding the WUaS Corporation: for a single CryptoCurrency like Stanford Mine PI and DISTRIBUTED via UBI experiments ... with WUaS Educational Services' Store ahead ...)

3 WUaS received an email regarding partnering with Project ECHO Replication team - https://hsc.unm.edu/echo/get-involved/start-a-hub/
Two questions per this Education Echo approach on Tuesdays -
How could Project Echo and World University and School best collaborate to create ~200 online medical schools in all ~200 countries? (And how could we do this in all ~200 countries' official and main languages?)https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School

And, beginning with Hepatitis C, how could Project Echo and World University and School best collaborate to create online Teaching Hospitals relating to these ~200 medical schools and ~200 teaching hospitals ~ https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Hospital

There is not yet any telerobotic surgery on this list of University of New Mexico's Project ECHO Institute TeleECHO Programs, eg as conditions they treat remotely -  https://hsc.unm.edu/echo/institute-programs/ - but perhaps WUaS can add this to our Project ECHO Replicator HUB in some of all ~200 Countries' TEaching Hospitals at our WUaS Medical Schools; and it seems like their hospitalization avoidance program ... could offer numerous opportunities for WUaS's online teaching hospital re medical conditions, symptoms, diagnoses and treatments, and online clinical care ...

Example of surgery robotics to come?
The home surgeon in the future @grok_ ? 3Accreditation &
Ph.D. student inquiries - Mr. Zalmat in Morocco, a 27 year old graduate in chemistry is potentially very interested in the planned Ph.D. program at WUaS. And when I attended the BPPE licensing workshop in San Jose, CA in February 2019, they said they could license not only Bachelor's degrees but also Ph.D.s! (BPPE licensing goes hand in hand with WASC senior accreditation initially as these agencies develop in the information age in CA).

He's most interested in a free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric Ph.D. candidacy in Computer Science beginning in September 2021, with a likely 7 year average time to completion at first. Perhaps he could help develop a realistic virtual earth for chemistry in these regards, and in French and Arabic, even in part, since his undergraduate degree was in chemistry - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM?src=hashtag_click. Here's a recent MIT Ph.D. recipient, Scott Greenwald, who's working on chemistry and physics at the molecular level in virtual worlds - https://twitter.com/scottgwald/status/1272880672449925121?s=20 - as an example of what he might begin to be coding in a computer science Ph.D. His knowledge of chemistry could be invaluable, Imad! :)

Looking forward to meeting and talking with him in Google Meet video conferencing on Saturday, at 9am in the morning in the SF Bay Area, and 5 pm in the late afternoon in Morocco - in an hour-long monthly business meeting (which also will be our Annual Meeting.

Hi David,

I just talked with my mother, and would like to invite you to Christmas Eve in a Google Meet video meeting. We're exploring 7pm Eastern Time (4pm west coast time), but other times are possible, - as would meeting on Xmas day. For an hour or so? It would be really nice to share Xmas Eve together, which is on a Thursday this year, if you're available. Will you be in DC; will you be traveling; Might you be available?

Warm regards, Scott

*

Hi Scott,Thank you for the wonderful invitation. I would love to connect with you two during the holiday. I'm celebrating xmas eve by having a benign, fatty lump taken off my back. I think it is pressing on nerves, and the 24th was the only opening before February. I may be out of commission Thur pm. Are you two available xmas day? I'm wide open and could talk any time that works for you.I hope to see you then. All the best,David

Hi David,

Sounds really great! How would noon your time (9am Pacific Time) work for you on Christmas Day? (Good luck with your procedure!)
More soon, All the best,

Scott

Hi Scott,

That sound wonderful. I look forward to seeing you both. And thanks about the (very minor, I hope) surgery. I'm most scared about covid, but the medical folks are probably better than anyone at keeping their environment safe.See you soon. All the best,

David

Hi David,

Wonderful, as well! I look forward to seeing you both as well. (Am a bit of a Covid-19 genes' skeptic, so think you'll be very safe in these regards regarding your surgery - good luck!) More soon!

Hi Ma and David,

It looks like the carol service for Fettes College (now IB high school in Edinburgh Scotland, where I studied in 1977-'78) just ended this morning, but is available here
https://www.fettes.com/familyforlife/carolservice2020 - re the Christmas spirit too ... (It's interesting ethnographically, in a sense, too - and am personally skipping through to the music, while the spoken parts are from 2016 and 2019 ... with an interesting glimpse into a Scottish schools' thinking for an Xmas caroling service).
Merry Christmas!
Warm regards, Scott
Carol Service 2020Welcome to the Carol Service for the Fettes Community 2020We are delighted to bring you our 2020 Carol Service filmed in advance and in accordance with the current government guidelines.  Our readers were filmed in Chapel from a distance and our carols are from recordings made in 2016 and 2019. In these unprecedented times when we are unable to gather, sing and pray together at Christmas time, we hope that you will be able to join with us from wherever you are in the world to participate in this Festival Service of Lessons and Carols.

Merry Xmas, David and Ma,

Am curious too how one might do online ethnomusicology of the Fettes' College Caroling service since it's also how this British school does joining (connecting) and via music and 'religion' and newly over the internet. Xmas (and Easter too) are I think important seasons in the British Isles / Scotland still.
Nice to join and connect at Xmas time, and interesting to think too about how this might work in this context, from Fettes' perspective, and given perhaps the role even that money, lack of money in Scotland historically, Fettes' as a private school, and that this video emerged from their Development office for Fettesians to feel connected in this season. What are the symbols? Xmas ornaments, beautiful buildings and campus, emblems of traditions...
Looking forward to seeing you on Xmas ... Will I have a small Xmas tree in the background? Not sure yet but maybe :) Will you Ma? You, David? Three Xmas trees due to Web Christmas :) ... Could be kind of [image error]

Wild Apple: To Apple in memory of Steve Jobs, We both went to Reed College, His inspiration and vision & WUaS, iPhone as Musical Instr subject at WUaS

Wednesday, December 16, 2020
(Will revert this to 10/5/11 in a little while, but am posting it now temporarily to 12/15/20, after coming upon this post in the AnthroDesign email list -  https://groups.io/g/anthrodesign/topics - after dormancy, then posting yesterday - [Dec. 18] Creating a Realistic Virtual Earth for Tourism: Harbin Hot Springs (S. Send a message to Apple in memory of Steve Jobs: http://www.apple.com/stevejobs ...
Here's what I just emailed:

Dear Apple Computer, Inc.,

I'm very sad that Steve Jobs has passed away.
My condolences to Apple and all the people there who are grieving at this loss.

We both went to Reed College.

I hope his inspiration and vision can richly inform the growth of World University and School, like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware.

Here's the iPhone as Musical Instrument wiki, subject at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/IPhone_as_musical_instrument - with an invitation to teach, learn, add, create, play and make music, in memory of Steve.

What a long strange trip it's been, thanks to Steve.

Sincerely,
Scott

Cedrus atlantica: Guilford College Presidency search (Quaker College in North Carolina) - "I do hope that such a person will feel rightly led to apply and find way opening to accept the invitation to lead the College towards its 200th anniversary in 2037"

Guilford College Presidency search

Thanks so much, Donn, for sharing this information and for all that FAHE is doing in response to the situation at Guilford College. It has been heartening to witness the outpouring of care and concern from so many Quaker organizations, meetings, and thousands of alumnae/i who are keenly interested in seeing the College survive in a meaningful and sustainable way. The right choice of the next president will be crucial in assuring that survival, and I do hope that such a person will feel rightly led to apply and find way opening to accept the invitation to lead the College towards its 200th anniversary in 2037.

All the best,Pax,Max L. CarterWilliam R. Rogers Director of Friends Center and Quaker Studies (retired)Guilford College

Donn and Friends,

Thanks so much for your email.
Stanford senior fellow, and China scholar, Liz Economy (who went to Swarthmore and is on its Board of Managers now), and, Friend, I think, and Haverford alumna, MIT Professor of Anthropology, Heather Paxson, both come to mind, - am appreciative of their academic excellence - but both also seem settled in their academic careers.

Guilford College Presidency

Dear Friends of FAHE:
I wish you well during these most difficult times, while also  seeking your help on a very important matter.
As you may know, Guilford College is conducting a national search for its next president. Like so many small colleges throughout the United States, Guilford is confronted with remarkable pressures stemming from the demographic, economic and technological forces undermining higher education as we have long known it. It is crucial that the Guilford community rally to meet these challenges, and a critical part of its success will be finding the president that can lead Guilford into its next phase. If you are like me, you believe that such a person will be a highly talented individual who will lead in a Quakerly manner.
Following a discussion that Stephen Potthoff, Laura Rediehs, Meg Streepy-Smith and I had with Ed Winslow, the chair of Guilford’s Board of Trustees; I recently got in touch with David Hopkins and Harrison Hickman, who are co-clerking the presidential search.  While meeting with David and Harrison, I offered FAHE’s assistance in identifying potential presidential candidates.
So, Friends, please read the letter that is attached below. If you are interested in applying for Guilford’s presidency, or nominating someone for the position, please contact David and Harrison at:  succession@guilford.edu .  Also, please circulate this email to those you know who might be helpful along the way.  Together, we may be able to assist our dear Friends at Guilford.
Warmly,

Moroccan PhD student inquiry - scholarship application

Zalmat Imad <imaden.zalmat@gmail.com>Fri, Dec 11, 2:42 PM (1 day ago)to meMy name is imad zalmat, i'm 27 years old, i earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry then i work as a private teacher of middle school students things that allow me to develop a good learning skill to be updated and give my best. I'm a learning passionate person and look always to learn new things to be in scale, and this year i start learning programming and i find myself enjoying the process and eager to learn and understand more about the field and through your scholarship i can push my learning pace to the next level regarding the high quality courses provided in edx platform from the best known universities and institutions thing that is encouraging to learn more from them, this is one of the programs that i really interested about from the New York university : https://www.edx.org/microbachelors/nyux-programming-data-structures.I hope my request can be taken into consideration and evaluated, and I will appreciate any feedback from you regarding my application and thank you.
Best regards

Dear Zalmat,
Thank you for your email. Were you responding to this newly updated World Univ & Sch (WUaS) website - worlduniversityandschool.org ? World University and School is offering free-to-students' Bachelor degrees, and planning to offer online Ph.D. degrees beginning next year (as well as MD and Law degrees after this), first in English, then in all ~200 countries and in their official and main languages. What is / are your native languages? And in what country are you a citizen?
Our WUaS degrees are CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric - https://ocw.mit.edu/ - and while WUaS has newly partnered with edX, it's only for individual courses from this edX catalog - https://www.edx.org/ - and WUaS is not offering the MicroBachelor degrees such as the NYU program you shared with us - https://www.edx.org/microbachelors/nyux-programming-data-structures (since NYU has their own arrangement with edX). Would you be interested in applying for a free-to-students' online Ph.D. degree beginning next year sometime, and in computer science (or EECS, or general science), or even chemistry, since you already have a Bachelor's degree (in chemistry), and seem interested in Programming and Data Structures? Thank you.

Thank you so much for your response and your time, actually I'm a Moroccan citizen, and Moroccan's dialect native, and my studies was in French.

I'm excited to pursue my studies and yes I'm interested in the provided degree by your university either in chemistry and computer science and if there is any possibility to get benefit from the programming courses in the Edx catalogue i will be grateful.
Best regards

Hi Zalmat and Larry,

Thanks so much for your quick response too. If World Univ & Sch could begin a licensing and accrediting (in Calif.) CC-4 MIT OCW-centric Ph.D. program for a free-to-student's probably 7 year average time to complete Ph.D. online in September 2021, would you be interested? It would be as if matriculating at MIT (or Stanford) itself in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but studying from your home in Morocco? The Ph.D. degree would be in English (with French and Arabic language degrees only beginning some years in the future online). If you were to choose between chemistry - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/ - and computer science - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/ - which subject would you choose? Courses initially in edX would likely be MIT OCW courses into MITx courses - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mitx-related-courseware/ - (on the edX platform). Thank you, and thanks for your interest. In an innovative way, some of this degree might develop in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM - single https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM?src=hashtag_click.
Here, too, is a recent Tweet from MIT Chemistry and with regard to their developing relationship with edX:
Last month, General Chemistry I: Atoms, Molecules, and Bonding, also known as Course 5.01x, premiered on
@edXOnline, a global nonprofit that aims to transform traditional education by removing the barriers of cost, location, and access. https://chemistry.mit.edu/chemistry-news

WUaS's is engaging MIT OCW's Creative Commons' 4 licensing re the open access to the MIT OCW courses, and has a developing partnership emerging with edX. Please let me know of your further thoughts, questions, ideas or suggestions in all of these regards, Zalmat. Thank you.
Best regards, ScottPS Larry Viehland went to MIT as an undergraduate in Chemistry / Physics, and has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin Madison in Chemistry (and is the chairman of the Board at WUaS, if you have any specific questions specific to academics; he's also the head of the Academic Accreditation committee).
PPS I've only visited Morocco once, and been to Fez and Marrakech, in addition to Casablanca.
Nice to be in communication.

Thank you scott and larry for your presence and your dedicating time, regarding your question if i have to choose, i will take in advantage the computer science curriculum as I start to put steps over the field and I'm ready to dedicate the required time and effort to take my learning journey to the next level and i would prefer to learn in English besides that if there is the possibility i could take some minors in chemistry.

Best regards and you're welcomed in Morocco all the time.

Dear Zalmat and Larry,

Thank you too, Zalmat! Stay tuned - I'm meeting with an edX representative for WUaS on Monday afternoon, and we'll talk further about the ~2,500 courses - https://www.edx.org - WUaS can offer for free-to-students' (Bachelor) Ph.D. degrees (probably over a 7 year average completion time, and prior to the fundamental research involved in doing a Phd), as, importantly, WUaS licenses and accredits first in California (so it would be as if you were studying toward a Ph.D. from Stanford, brainstorming-wise, since Stanford is accredited by WASC senior, like WUaS is seeking to be), - and regarding a Ph.D. in Computer Science beginning possibly in September 2021.
While WUaS hasn't begun to plan for our PhDs so far, there may well be some coursework, possibly at the Bachelor's Degree level, that it would be helpful for you to take in order to matriculate as a WUAS Ph.D. student, possibly in September 2021, for example. While you would be applying for a Ph.D. candidates' position at WUaS, and for your information, WUaS also seeks eventually to hire Project Heads and University heads in most countries (and we may seek to hire along the lines that Google hires - https://careers.google.com/how-we-hire/) ... and seek matriculating student applications along the lines that Stanford seeks in its application process.
I'd love to visit Fez and Marrakech with you (and Larry too - on Semester at Sea even, post Covid-19 pandemic) at some point, but possibly first in a realistic virtual earth for hiking or walking - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForHiking?src=hashtag_click - and in a realistic virtual earth for history - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForHistory?src=hashtag_click - where I'm thinking in terms of Google Street View with TIME SLIDER and regarding my ethnographic or anthropological research field site, eg the Harbin Gate House in Google Street View (and the time slider function in its beginning stages is visible in the bottom-most images where you can also begin to "walk") ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg (~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook). Fez and Marrakech, as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are also my virtual anthropological field sites, and I've written one chapter about virtual UNESCO WHS - and in Morocco specifically - entitled
"DIGITAL SPATIAL REPRESENTATIONS:

NEW COMMUNICATION PROCESSES AND ‘MIDDLE EASTERN’
UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES ONLINE" (in 2001, in a volume edited by Rami Farouk Daher, from Jordan - https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity)

Would you be interested in studying toward applying to a free-to-students' Ph.D. program at MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World Univ & Sch, beginning with Bachelor-level edX courses, in order to gain the background? Larry and I will begin to think through further about how applying for WUaS Ph.D.s will work, thanks to your potential interest.
What are some of your social media sites - Twitter, LinkedIn or similar if you'd care to share these? Thank you!
Best regards, and looking forward to meeting you online (in virtual Morocco?) at some point, to talk further, Scott

Dear scott,

Thank you again and i'm looking forward to meet you and Larry as well, and also start my learning journey in World University and School and i will be glad to start the bachelor's courses as you mentioned. Here are social accounts on :Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/imad.slawi.7And Twitter :https://twitter.com/Imaden3?s=09

Thanks so much, Zalmat,

Do you happen to know Brian Seilstad - https://www.facebook.com/brian.seilstad - whom I know from the San Francisco Quaker Meeting, and who lives in Ifrane, Morocco, where he's at the university? In what city do you live? I'll let you know what I learn after talking with the edX representative on Monday - and regarding WUaS planning for emerging Ph.D. degrees, and how you might best develop a background for a CS Phd at WUaS, which is CC-4 MIT OCW-centric and online (as you change academic directions from your undergraduate degree in chemistry) ... Since WUaS is CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric, WUaS will be free-to-students, and is going to seek reimbursement from all ~200 countries' departments of education, per student per year. So this would be part of our conversation ahead, as we think through how you might best prepare to apply for Ph.D. candidacy at World Univ & Sch. And initially the application process would be similar to the new approach WUaS has outlined fairly recently here - worlduniversityandschool.org - but which will develop further as our website grows.
Regards, Scotthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/scottgkmacleod/

Thank you dear Scott for your effort and your time, actually i don't know Brian Seilstad but I'm glad to get in touch with him and i will send a friend request, about the city where i live it's called "Salè" which is attached to the capital Rabat, they are separated by river called "Abou regrag",the ifrane city is about 192 km from here and it's one of the most beautiful city of Morocco.

I'm looking forward to hear from you in the next coming days about any updates and thank you again for your dedication.

Hello Scott,

I hope my note finds you well. As we approach the new year, I was curious if we can arrange a time next week to discuss your progress with the initiative and ensure that we are on the same page with the direction of the partnership.
Regarding access to learners sign-ups and grades, this takes place on the admin dashboard. Accessing learner data requires a signed agreement with edX and prepaid access to courses. I have included a link below for what the Admin Dashboard looks like for your review.

Thanks again and feel free to select a time to meet here:30 Minute Call with Matthew Gusching from edX.
Best regards,Matthew

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for reaching out, and I hope this email finds you well.
Sounds good. Where please is the link to the Admin Dashboard - I don't see it in your email.
I'm also sharing with you an email exchange I just now engaged in with a new prospective student, and Larry Viehland, regarding his inquiry into taking edX courses. Perhaps we could talk about this email too, when we video chat. Thank you. As WUaS builds out our Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, and MD degrees, and IB high school diplomas, in all ~200 countries, and in their official and main languages - and plans for all speakers of all 200 countries' main and official languages, each a Wikidata Q-tiem #, then also speakers of all 7,117 known living languages - and then brainstorming-wise for all 7.8 billion people on the planet - https://worlduniversityandschooldatabase.wiki.opencura.com/wiki/Item:Q4 - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2020/12/nov-21-2020-minutes-for-world.html ... - I can see how a 7 year average time to finish a Ph.D. at WUaS might not be in Zalmat's interests, at this time. Let's keep in touch about this as well. I'll let you know if and how Zalmat replies in our meeting. Thank you.
Best regards, Scott

scholarship application
My name is imad zalmat, i'm 27 years old, i earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry then i work as a private teacher of middle school students things that allow me to develop a good learning skill to be updated and give my best.

Thank you.

Hello Scott,
That sounds great, I look forward to connecting and discussing further. Here is an attached PDF to the Admin Dashboard for your review.
Best,
Matthew

Dear Larry,

I've just scheduled a meeting with Matthew at edX on Monday afternoon in MIT Zoom, and he's also sent me the template for the emerging edX dashboard, regarding "learners' sign-ups and grades." This is the information we've been asking for, and it looks like a good starting point - since WUaS could potentially interoperate our own Wikidata Q-item #s or WUaS Q-item PIN #s for 7.8 billion people, on our end, emerging, with this (and even for Stanford 'Mine Pi' cryptocurrency brainstorming-wise).
What other information might WUaS want from such an edX "learners' sign-ups and grades" ' information source, - and compared with our own hypothetical dashboard which we might create for students studying MIT OCW courses into our own Learning Management System, such as in G Suite for Education?

What do you think of this edX Dashboard?

Sincerely, Scott

Hi Terri,

Thanks for your great moderation of the ISSIP conference. Regarding workcraft (Job crafting is a means of describing the ways in which employees utilize opportunities to customize their jobs by actively changing their tasks and interactions with others at. work. Those who engage in these actions are called job crafters, and research suggests they can. - https://positiveorgs.bus.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/What-is-Job-Crafting-and-Why-Does-it-Matter1.pdf) .

Am curious whether Google kind of front-ends work crafting in their hiring process regarding this questions -
What is something you learned that made everything that came after easier?
Have more of your achievements come as a result of solitary effort or teamwork?
What do you enjoy more, solving problems or pushing the discussion forward?
What is the most rewarding job you've ever had? Why?
Describe the best team you ever worked with. What made that experience stand out?

which leads to a series of other questions in the career-hiring process at Google that might further inform their work crafting from the beginning (and given too that Google is kind of an AI company per Peter Norvig) ...
and re what I asked in chat:"Am an applicator of Google - invite them to ISSIP (brainstorming-wise)? - I looked up their hiring practices - https://careers.google.com/how-we-hire/ - and am wondering how T-shaped approaches might interoperate. How might these approaches to careers at Google interface with T-shaped thinking re ISSIP? Thanks!"
Thoughts, ideas, questions, suggestions?
(MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch may well engage these Google practices, in 200 countries, and in 7,117 known living languages, when we begin to hire). Thank you!
Thanks, Scott

Thanks Scott for all your support of ISSIP!

If I can find the links, there are some online videos of Googlers talking about the need for T-shaped people - but will take some digging to find them.

Hi David,

You sound busy! Nice to hear from you too.
Glad too to have heard this conversation on free speech. Am an appreciator of Rebecca MacKinnon's and John Palfrey's thinking :)
I think it may have been recorded. Rebecca I think said it was going to be. Too bad Cecilia Kang dropped at the the last minute. It would be interesting to view again - I may - with formulating specific questions about implications of free speech and internet platforms beforehand - since most current questions, legally and societally (and partly regarding the course I teach - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html) would be answered in the conversation.
They got to most of the audience questions, but not mine -
What are some of the implications of free speech in this digital world, and the upcoming Biden administration, in all ~200 countries, and in their official / main languages, and regarding developing law? Thank you, Scott (World Univ & Sch is planning online law schools in all ~200 countries ~ https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School - worlduniversityandschool.org - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch)

Are you playing guitar these days at home? :)

Hi Ma,
How are you?
Just added 2 further tunes to my developing Scottish Small Pipes' album bringing the number to 14 out of probably 38 tunes - https://scottmacleodhoneyinthebagscottishsmallpipesbagpiping.bandcamp.com/

It's a creative process, and interesting goal to make an album, and record & add these tunes too, and they sound nice, and I'm learning and playing more as I go. For the elation, heightened, musical aspect, I'm aiming to play them at the upper end of these tempo ranges -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/western-honey-bee-re-my-upcoming-honey.html - and except for the jigs so far (120 bpm is upper end) which I played at 108 bpm (lower end) I've been playing them fairly up-tempo. (TEMPO is a little GOAL re items 2 & 3 http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm). And I've already taken private lessons with Connor Sinclair earlier this year, per item 1 - and at some point I'll return to these lesson video recordings. I'm focusing a bit further too on concentration per item 4 in a new way. All these items are helpful thinking points re playing music in general and as I develop my album.
Will play a little Piobaireachd this evening, and in preparation for giving a lesson tomorrow.
Glad to be making progress but in developing 200 ONLINE medical schools in collaborating with Project ECHO in New Mexico / Stanford, and my educational project.
Glad too to have heard the conversation on free speech. Am an appreciator of Rebecca MacKinnon's and John Palfrey's thinking :) did you hear this?
Heading out for a walk soon ... Did you get out today?
I may circle around to these Guidelines (which I wrote) in a whole different vein -Guidelines for Practicing Loving Bliss v-a-v a Musical Instrument
http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm as I go too :)

Hi Ma,

Good to talk! I'm missing friend and Lacanian Psychiatrist George Alexander MD's conversation, from which I learned. Am whistle-blowing in an ongoing way about the SF Quaker Meeting, and potentially the illegal sex trade ... as potentially sad and tragic as this might be. Was David Matchett co-opted too (his brother died not too long ago) ... and the last day I was there some years ago, I think Trader Joe's was somehow involved in the time after meeting, when a ploy to exploit kids may have been happening. Whether to boycott TJs ... Am curious to try to navigate ethics apart from J'ethics ... and while it may not be easy, networking in other ways could have much merit in these regards too. Even the conversation between John Palfrey and Rebecca MacKinnon, when John mentioned becoming trickier twice early in the conversation, raised my ethical antennae re the illegal sex trade, unfortunately, and while when I whistle-blew about the SF Quaker Meeting loudly some years ago (albeit I didn't call the SF police - and I should have in retrospect now, after calling the Moraga police this summer), I cited a Boston Globe article about what I whistle blew about which he had posted on his Twitter feed at the time, written by 5 authors.
Boycotting, and networking in new directions, can have merit ... am appreciative of the role of culture too in regards to ethics, and ethics in regards to culture ... whether it be UU, Quaker (both with a kind of Christian focus, but unprogrammed in the latter sense) or Yogic (Angela?) or individually philosophical ...or Lacanian, or meditation oriented re individualism ... just some thoughts (and further ethical whistle-blowing ... ) as I seek to grow my big projects ...
You might enjoy my email to David Thurston below ... re changing this focus (or re a kind of compartmentalization, a George word ... and regarding becoming more sophisticated too, an idea I learned from George as well). I find writing, conversation (and playing music at times can help) as well ... and friendship especially.
Love, Scott- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/western-honey-bee-re-my-upcoming-honey.html -

I went out for a walk without my smartphone for the first time - since it was charging, and I wanted to experiment being without it, and re what information I might share unknowingly with the internet providers - and walked only for about a mile ... seeking to whistle-blow to end the harm (re illegal sex trade??? and SF Quaker Meeting... .... and the Meeting did nothing to address this ... ) too  ... Potentially ... In the law, the role of the perpetrator is significant here ... And as you may have noticed in some emails, I continue to seek to develop online psychiatry for such issues and in collaboration with health organizations outside California even ... such as possibly Friends Hospital in Philadelphia ... Should I call the SF police at this stage about the crimes at the SF Quaker Meeting? It's probably too late ... But there's a lot of mental illness in the SF Quaker Meeting ... George, uniquely, may have had great thinking about such issues, in a way that his wife wouldn't curiously ...
Back to the hope I mentioned before ... re becoming more sophisticated ... and also re the law ... and what I wrote in my last email ...
Boycotting, and networking in new directions, can have merit ... am appreciative of the role of culture too in regards to ethics, and ethics in regards to culture ... whether it be UU, Quaker (both with a kind of Christian focus, but unprogrammed in the latter sense) or Yogic (Angela?) or individually philosophical ... or Lacanian thinking, or meditation oriented re individualism ... just some thoughts (and further ethical whistle-blowing ... ) as I seek to grow my big projects ...
You might enjoy my email to David Thurston below ... re changing this focus (or re a kind of compartmentalization, a George word ... and regarding becoming more sophisticated too, an idea I learned from George as well). I find writing, conversation (and playing music at times can help) as well ... and friendship especially.

Sending love, Scott

Good morning, Ma! How are you?

. . .
As you observed some years ago, I'll know it, naturally, when I meet my life partner, - and does this pandemic make things more interesting? Or is it complicating too since it could go on for years to come?
Would love to bring a life partner 'home' (in video conferencing) for Xmas ... And the Swedish model re pandemic seems to un- complicate this scenario re today's headline - "The Governor of the Riksbank warns of the climate threat: The economic risks of the climate crisis are getting closer, says Anna Breman" ...
https://www.dn.se/ekonomi/riksbankstopp-varnar-for-klimathotet-risker-som-kommer-allt-narmare/ (and see Obama article about Greta Thunberg's generation - re even risk assessment thinking, and that Anders  Tegnell's popularity remains high https://twitter.com/maddysavage/status/1332597708620644352?s=19 (Swedish exceptionalism? ... and conditions that enhance trust – here defined as the perceived trustworthiness of an average individual ... Different from 'American exceptionalism') ... but I live in California ...
. . .
Glad to have heard from David [image error]

Good morning, Ma,

Some further thinking (and glad to be in the SF BAY AREA) ... RE genetics revolution (which I teach about in one of my courses) ...http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html ...

Besides the in case of emergency scenario, or fire drill, I'm hypothesizing, for Covid-19, & the cleaning up scenario, or get the cat back in the Bag' - with many now in a form of media generated self-quarantine - I wonder too whether some of the getting the cat back in the Bag' (sexuality?) - speculatively - could have emerged from this conference ...

"Biogen conference in Boston likely linked to as many as 300,000 COVID-19 cases worldwide, researchers sayA new study says COVID-19 cases linked to the conference at the Boston Marriott Long Wharf hotel in February were found as far away as Australia, Slovakia, and Sweden, as well as in 29 US states" https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/12/10/nation/biogen-conference-boston-likely-linked-330000-covid-19-cases-worldwide-researchers-say/

... And could Biogen also be a company in industry of excellent genetic engineers which could make significant advances in aging reversal ? See Biogen picture here -

How soon will we see an #AgingReversal #WUaSAgingReversal drug announced like thishttps://t.co/tH41ozOQaH above flux of the vote counts of the #USNationalElection ? Develop in & Publish from a single #RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics ?https://t.co/YTWR9g4gQz @WorldUnivAndSch ~

And like Anders Tegnell in Sweden, is Tony Fauci helping to develop idea-wise the Covid-19 pandemic USA public health RESPONSE affecting California too (in its uniqueness)? ... (Mention of Fauci and Francis Collins by George Church

"top health officials, including Dr. Francis S. Collins, the director of NIH, & Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the top infectious disease specialist, questioned whether the data was sufficient." https://t.co/Tt23rDJ6m2

... So in what ways could Covid-19 be IDEOLOGY as well as a way to jumpstart genetic engineering for in case of emergency bio-warfare preparedness even?
This just appeared as headlines on "The Daily News" Dagens Nyheter (Sweden) and possibly regarding protecting children even
Photo: Magnus Hallgren / DN / TT
"Karolinska cancels child surgery The staff must staff the covid care • Emergency procedures will be carried out."https://www.dn.se/sthlm/karolinska-staller-in-alla-barnoperationer-nar-personal-flyttas/
re Covid-19 as ideology possibly too, and even somehow protecting kids; see the 2nd Hypothetical News' item here from 4/1/20 - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/himalyan-monal-how-are-harbin-hot.html?m=0

Some of the above is scary stuff in an age of genetic engineering with genetic and social side effects ...
Sharing some thinking too ... can WUaS create 7.8 billion You at WUaS avatar bot electronic medical records for further genetic and genealogical research for everyone ? :)
And is genetics a lAnguage which we could even add to 1 #RealisticVirtualEarthForLanguages - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1205542500720447488?s=19 - and interoperate with a Universal Translator re all 7117 known living languages ? :)

DISPATCHES FROM THE NEOBIOLOGICAL FRONTIERMachine Learning and Major Depression
Having a quantitative, objective understanding of the specific brain networks associated with major depression could be the way to develop imaging biomarkers to diagnose and better treat the condition. But nobody knows how to tease depression from a brain scan. As a possible step in that direction, a group at Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International in Kyoto, Japan, applied machine-learning algorithms to find associations among the fMRI resting brain activity scans of 731 people both with and without depression and were able to report approximately 70 percent accuracy at validating depression diagnosis in a second set of 521 people.

A Metastatic Map of Human Cancer
Metastasis is the most common cause of cancer death, but our ability to predict which tumors will metastasize and treat accordingly is hampered by a lack of laboratory models, which rely on labor-intensive and expensive approaches like grafting human tumors onto mice. These models do exist for certain types of cancer, but extrapolating to other, genetically diverse cancers may not work. Now researchers at MIT and Harvard have developed “MetMap,” which reveals organ-specific patterns of metastasis. To demonstrate its potential, they investigated 21 breast cancer cell lines and found altered metabolism of fatty lipid molecules linked to metastasis—something they say could suggest a new therapeutic strategy.

French Minister Says “Non” to Cultured Meat
After four years of Donald Trump, it shouldn’t feel unusual for other politicians to use Twitter to announce government policy—but somehow it still does. Following the announcement last week that the government of Singapore will authorize the sale of Eat Just’s cultured chicken nuggets grown from animal cells in a lab, French agricultural minister Julien Denormandie took to Twitter to defend his country’s patrimoine. “Is this really the society we want for our children? I say NON. Let me be clear: meat comes from the living, not the lab. Count on me so that in France, meat remains natural and never artificial!” Perhaps he should bone up on modern industrial chicken farming.

The Made Exceeds the Grown
In the last hundred years, the combined weight of all plants, bacteria, fungi, animals, and other organisms on Earth has shrunk, largely due to deforestation, which has halved the total mass of plants on our planet. Meanwhile the amount of human-made “anthropogenic” mass—like buildings, roads, plastics, and machines—is doubling every 20 years and now exceeds one teraton (1,000,000,000,000 tons). According to a group of researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, 2020 is the crossover point in which the amount of human-made mass has now exceeded all living biomass. Humans currently produce a mass equivalent to the combined weight of every living person on Earth each week, and if this trend continues, anthropogenic mass is expected to exceed 3 teratons by 2040—almost triple the current biomass.
Nature Treating, Not Tripping
One of the more obscure but naturally occurring psychedelic chemicals is ibogaine, found in the roots of the West African shrub Tabernanthe iboga. But while it has shown promise for treating relapse in opioid and alcohol addiction, ibogaine may be too powerful. It causes hallucinations that can last more than 24 hours, and it has potentially neurotoxic side effects and sometimes induces fatal cardiac arrhythmias. But now researchers at the University of California, Davis have synthesized a non-hallucinogenic chemical analog of ibogaine they say has potential to treat addiction and depression more safely.

Gene Therapy in One Eye Helps Vision in Both
A gene therapy trial involving 37 people suffering from a common mitochondrial-linked genetic disease known as Leber hereditary optic neuropathy has shown the promise of this treatment to help thousands of people across the world regain and keep their vision. But the trial also yielded an unexpected result: Injecting the viral vector designed to correct the condition in one eye significantly improved vision in the other. Scientists at University of Cambridge and University of Pittsburgh, where the trial was done, say the improvements to the untreated eyes are likely due to the transfer of vector DNA from the injected eye.

My Happy May Not Be Your Happy
How happy are you? The answer, it turns out, depends to a large extent on where you live. The vast majority of happiness research relies on measures developed in the United States and other WEIRD countries (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic), where research dollars for this sort of thing tend to be more available. But happiness in those countries may be informed by an historic Protestant worldview that values personal achievement based on hard work.

We may not find the same self-centered tears of joy in other cultures, where happiness involves harmony in interpersonal relationships with others. The new study compared the performance of happiness scales developed in the United States and Japan and found that while the Japanese scale performed more consistently, both did poorly in Africa and the Middle East. This suggests a more universal measure of happiness should consider both scales—and probably new ones as well.

Hi Ma,
How are you?

And the Swedish model regarding the covid-19 pandemic seems to un-complicate this scenario re today's headline -
"The Governor of the Riksbank warns of the climate threat: The economic risks of the climate crisis are getting closer, says Anna Breman" ...
https://www.dn.se/ekonomi/riksbankstopp-varnar-for-klimathotet-risker-som-kommer-allt-narmare/ (and see Obama article about Greta Thunberg's generation - re even risk assessment thinking, and that Anders  Tegnell's popularity remains high https://twitter.com/maddysavage/status/1332597708620644352?s=19 (Swedish exceptionalism? ... and conditions that enhance trust – here defined as the perceived trustworthiness of an average individual ... Different from 'American exceptionalism') ... but I live in California ...
. . .
Glad to have heard from David [image error]
