Dear Pew,

I just responded to your survey. I'm curious about the following too: 'Although World Univ & Sch hasn't hired any researchers or academic or other staff yet, in what ways could we develop a collaboration regarding - "How could World Univ & Sch develop Pew approaches to surveying and knowledge generation in each of all ~200 countries, and in their official and main languages?"'

(Would it be possible to add a link too to the Weekly Roundup? I'd like to be able to share it with others or add it to blog posts, etc. Thanks).

Thank you,

Scott MacLeod (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org)

The latest findings from Pew Research Center · Subscribe ↗

2020 election reveals two broad voting coalitions fundamentally at odds

If one early takeaway from the election is historic voter participation, another may be the continuing political polarization that has come to define the United States. The elected officials who take the oath of office in Washington in January will be representing two broad coalitions of voters who are deeply distrustful of one another and who fundamentally disagree over policies, plans and even the very problems that face the country today.

Americans’ prescription for the nation starts with neighborliness

Even before the historic challenges of 2020, Americans saw the building blocks of their society and political culture in deep distress. Yet amid the bleak assessments, there is some hope. Most Americans say public confidence in the federal government, the news media and their fellow citizens can be improved, with many urging changes in interpersonal behavior. Read more from Pew Research Center in RealClearPolitics.

Amid pandemic, the long decline of in-person voting on Election Day likely accelerated this year

In 1996, 89.5% of voters reported voting in person on Election Day. As recently as 2006, that share was 80.4%. But then the in-person Election Day portion of the vote began to skid, falling below 60% in each election cycle since 2014. The decline likely continued this year amid widespread early and absentee voting due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In past elections, U.S. trailed most developed countries in voter turnout

How does voter turnout in the United States compare with turnout in other countries? That depends very much on which country you’re looking at and which measuring stick you use.

Two-thirds of U.S. adults say they’ve seen their own news sources report facts meant to favor one side

Many Americans are concerned about the media reporting inaccurate or incomplete information. And that includes information reported by their own most-used news sources.

After surging in 2019, migrant apprehensions at U.S.-Mexico border fell sharply in fiscal 2020

Adding women's board diversity - web sites?

Thank you for this excellent conversation. In combining adding value through female board diversity, especially, with ESG companies' principles, can you please point to excellent online guidelines laying out how best to add diversity to the board, and perhaps from university websites? You're welcome, Nish - we met some years ago in SF at a TechSoup Meetup (possibly 10 or longer), when you were talking about Yelp. How are you? CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch has just begun to partner with edX (founded by MT & Harvard), and to offer free-to-students' Bachelor degrees (licensing and accrediting in CA) beginning in January, but haven't been very successful at getting the word out, or becoming financially successful (and WUaS is 2 legal entities - a CA Nonprofit, and a CA for profit general stock company, as well as a federal 501 c 3). Dear World Universitians, Rohit, Prem, All,

The World Univ & Sch web site is updated - worlduniversityandschool.org - with 29 majors, and how to matriculate in January 2021, with students searching the - https://www.edx.org/ - courses for their classes. WUaS also just received an XLS document with 2,000 plus courses from edX, potentially for licensing with the state of CA's BPPE. Glad for WUaS to be partnering with edX for online free-to-students' WUAS Bachelor degrees.

WUaS is now officially carrying 3 Lego Robotics' kits in the WUaS Educational Services' Store - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - for WUaS students and other in the USA.

WUaS is glad to be publishing the MIT OpenCourseWare Daily which daily publishes to Twitter these licensing clarifications:

Hi Tym,
How are you? I hope this finds you well, hail and hearty!

Are you getting out hiking these days, and in these ongoing times of covid-19 quarantine? Do you think we'll be hiking in 100 years from now, or heading to Harbin even together, actually or virtually?
Here's the Harvard MIT Professor of Genetics' George Church brief video interview about this - https://youtu.be/bnCEIPQFNnk - and further, and newly, here he mentions being involved in 2 of the 3 large biotech firms in Cambridge, and much, much more, in an interesting conversation -  George Church - The Origins Podcast with Lawrence Krauss--FULL VIDEO
https://youtu.be/vitHZPkoMSw

What are you up to today and these days? Here's my list for the rest of the day and ahead:
write book - "Light, Float, Sit, Watsu ~ Virtually: Bodymind Electricity Sings to Me at Harbin Hot Springs & Other Traveling Poems"
record for Scottish Small Pipes' album  - "Honey in the Bag"
write UC Berkeley Tourism Studies' talk for 12/18/20 -
"Creating a realistic virtual earth for tourism and tourism studies with actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs: A Case Study"

update web site - scottmacleod.com (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/11/crown-flower.html
But I may head hiking in the light as well, Tym! Are you hiking by any chance today?
What music are you listening to much these days? (I return to the Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers a fair amount:)
I have a sofa bed in my living room here if you ever need a place to stay and we can start traveling with covid19.
And could N... be on the horizon for connecting further? :) (She followed me on Twitter a few weeks ago).
Fond regards, Scott

PSJust shared this earlier with my Cuttyhunk friend, David Thurston:
Nice to talk on Friday. What are you up to today? Are you heading out to hike and explore again ?
In my 'safe house,' having whistle-blown yet again, this time about...  (where I lived for 13 years), by calling the Moraga police (having whistle-blown about the SF Quaker Meeting, about Stanford, about UC Berkeley, Reed College, and other institutions  - am a regular old whistle-blower about wrong-doing:), and am glad too to have the option for this safe house (thanks somehow to Pi and brother Partha M, both in the federal govt?, and an extended Indian network even???). (Canyon and Pacific Yearly Meeting Quakers re the illegal sex industry even??? ... and potentially with minors, tragically ...??? ... evidence aggregating). There can be risks in whistle-blowing - and when the net begins to close around long time illegal sex-rings hypothetically (in SF Bay Area with decades' long crazinesses in all likelihood) -  which in my experience ameliorate with time and distance, but which emergent safety is not guaranteed. And is some of this recently a consequence of the ineffectual despot wannabe's psychology who was just voted out of office? C'est possible!
Am quite glad Biden and Kamala Harris are settling into being President and VP elect and that Joe Biden is so experienced as VP for 8 years with Barack Obama, for example. Glad too Kamala is a SF prosecutor too, and from Oakland (which grew Jimi Hendrix too! :)
And whither World University and School in all of this? Am glad we're now partnering with edX with their 3000 plus courses! ...

Pulled on my wintery jacket to have coffee and tea outside on garden patio patio with amazing views (just north of Berkeley), then soft boiled egg, then more tea ... appreciating my views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the new mast and rigging architecture of the Bay Bridge, and the Richmond bridge ... may head hiking later again thanks to your Sugarloaf mountain hiking inspiration ...

What would a Nontheist Friends' Journal entail?

WUaS - World University and School <worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com>

7:41 PM (2 hours ago)

to nontheist-friends

Hi Nontheist Friends,

I was looking through the online cover of "Friends' Journal" - https://www.friendsjournal.org/ - and it made me wonder would a Nontheist Friends Journal would entail?

(By way of comparison, I looked up UUs, and found the UU World - https://www.uuworld.org/ - published twice a year, not 10-12 times per year or so in FJ, and also "UU World: the Magazine of the Unitarian Universalist Association" -

https://www.uua.org/publications/uuworld

And I also found this historical, quite Christo-centric, Unitarian journals, from Harvard

Below are chronological lists -

https://guides.library.harvard.edu/c.php?g=253864&p=7224951 - and there were a lot of them!

And this description is interesting, re non-theism and UUs -

"Unitarian Universalism is not an atheist movement, but a religious movement into which some atheists may comfortably fit. The movement proclaims the importance of individual freedom of belief, and it includes members from a wide spectrum of beliefs."Oct 27, 2009

https://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/atheism/types/unitarianuniversalism.shtml

Am finding the Twitter conversation among the most interesting 'journals' out there, these days - re people sharing messages from a kind of sitting in Meeting approach, loosely (in front of their computers), and somewhat non-theistically, and somewhat friendly-wise too -  but partly because it's distributed. (And while there are a variety of NtF #Hashtags and related eg https://twitter.com/hashtag/NontheistFriends?src=hashtag_click - people aren't yet engaging them very much, as people seem to be engaging Friends' Journal; might have to consider questions of advertising in any upcoming Non-theist Friends' Journal).

NtF Cheers,

Scott

AGMNFN EVENTSNFN WEBSITEFORMAL NOTICE OF AGM 9 DECEMBER 2020 AT 7PM ON ZOOMNOVEMBER 9, 2020 TREVOR 1 COMMENT

The formal notice was sent to members, including those who have signed up in 2020, by email on 5 November and reads as follows:

Dear Members and friends of NFN,

Please accept this letter as formal notice of our belated 2020 AGM which will be held by Zoom on Wed 9 December 2020 at 7pm. Tim Regan, a member of the SG, will act as our host. To register please email: tim_regan82@hotmail.com (note the understroke between Tim and Regan!) by Saturday 14 November 2020. You will then be sent the link to join the meeting and any additional papers.

In these complicated times it is so much harder to keep in meaningful contact. Many of us are on a steep learning curve to develop ways of keeping in touch using digital means. It is all the more important therefore that we get a good turnout at our AGM to consider the future of the network. Though the AGM is primarily for members we warmly welcome all our interested friends as observers.

We need your active support to think about the Network’s focus and its place within the Society of Friends and this will be the main business of our AGM. We look forward to meet many of you there.

Please notify Gisela with nominations for Steering group and clerk, suggestions and any other business by 14/11/2020: jgcreed@btinternet.com

With best wishes

Gisela Creed (clerk)

Agenda:

1 Annual report including updates on: website, newsletter and finance, membership

2 Minutes of last Meeting (30/03/19)

3 Simple amendments to Constitution

4 The Future of the Network, discussion, introduced by David Boulton (paper)

a. aims and structure of the network

b. conferences/other activities etc (suggestions welcome)

5 Membership arrangements

6 Appointment of steering group and clerk

At present the following members of the steering group are willing to continue: Trevor Bending (website), Piers Maddox (Treasurer and newsletter), Roger Warren Evans (membership), Gisela Creed as ordinary member, and Tim Regan. Wishing to stand down at the AGM after long service are: David Boulton, Keith Ryecroft and Sarah Siddle, David Parlett resigned already in August 2020, and your clerk wishes to hand over this role. This leaves 4-5 vacancies to be filled by volunteers who can play an active role and a proposal for clerk.

7 Any other business

The Steering Group 2019-20: David Boulton, Trevor Bending (website), Gisela Creed (clerk), Piers Maddox (treasurer and newsletter), David Parlett (formerly newsletter editor and membership), Tim Regan, Keith Rycroft, Sarah Siddle, Roger Warren Evans (membership).

Ma,
This British Nontheist Friends' Network AGM announcement for 9 December 2020, at 7pm British Time, came after we talked - https://nontheist-quakers.org.uk/2020/11/09/formal-notice-of-agm-9-december-2020-at-7pm-on-zoom/ - and after I emailed the NtF list, and posted this idea for a Nontheist Friends' Journal - a NtF journal here (and much more) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/11/salal-wuas-brain-wave-headsets-covid-19.html - yesterday evening.
British organizational culture, especially among Quakers, is very different (and old) and civil in my experience compared with US west coast Friends' organizational culture, morality even, (your philosophically-inclined, friendly anthropologist son writes :))
Have a great week, and nice to talk last night (from the UU Church of Kensington (Berkeley's) parking lot on a pretty evening.
No choirs yet among Nontheist Friends that I know of, and no easy successful online choirs yet that I know of either. The Boston Globe reports (see below) that covid-19 vaccines are on the horizon, and maybe, in the meantime, some illegal behavior is getting 'cleaned up' in multiple countries under the meme of the corronavirus, - and with a new approaches emerging thanks to new President-elect! :)
Love, Scott

Hi Tym,
How are you?

(where I lived for 13 years), by calling the Moraga police (having whistle-blown about the SF Quaker Meeting, about Stanford, about UC Berkeley, and other institutions  - am a regular old whistle-blower:), and am glad too to have the option for this safe house (thanks somehow to Pi and brother Partha M, both in the federal govt?, and an extended Indian network even???). (Canyon and Pacific Yearly Meeting Quakers re the illegal sex industry even??? ... and potentially with minors, tragically...??? ... evidence aggregating). There can be risks in whistle-blowing - and when the net begins to close around a long time illegal sex-ring hypothetically (in SF Bay Area with decades' long crazinesses in all likelihood) -  which in my experience ameliorate with time and distance, but which emergent safety is not guaranteed.
Am glad we're now partnering with edX with their 3000 plus courses! ...

Am finding the Twitter conversation among the most interesting 'journals' out there, these days - re people sharing messages from a kind of sitting in Meeting, and somewhat non theistically, and somewhat friendly too -  but partly because it's distributed. (And while there are a variety of NtF #Hashtags and related eg https://twitter.com/hashtag/Nontheist... - people aren't yet engaging them very much, as people seem to be engaging Friends' Journal).

NtF Cheers,

Scott

Seeking to get started with phase 1 of creating a realistic virtual Harbin for tourism and tourism studies for my UC Berkeley TSWG talk on 12/18/20 ... and how best to do this for you and I to become creators at the cellular and atomic levels too (were you or I able to easily generate images at these scales)?

Glad this first image from Google seems to adaptable for Lego robotics' bricks!

On the popular vote side of this election, from Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's office just now:

PSI shared this with my mother this morning, and in which you might be interested -

Gave a good piping lesson last night (and Taylor was on his smartphone on Skype video, small video, since his computer was in the shop). How are you doing in this liminal vote counting time? How are you?
I think in this post-election vote counting time - which I'm calling the Covid-19 vote counting time (which tRump has been having trouble combatting for months) - and possibly particularly of African American votes in PA and GA (which tRump may be calling 'illegal votes' indirectly, scarily, and racistly, it looks like Biden could emerge as the electoral college winner. What do you think? How are you doing with this crazy time?
I think we'll see a change in the countries' mindset, (weird) psychology and culture (as divided as it is) as tRump exits, stage right.  What do you think about a change in psychology emerging in the US, and vis-a-vis the media, as a consequence of the 1 term president's potential end or exit?
Here's the first pronouncement that Biden wins, which I looked for an found in a Google search, and turned into a Harbin Tweet -
'Biden Wins, but the Capitalist Crisis That Created Trumpism Is Here to Stay: It’s now almost certain that Joe Biden will be the next President of the US ... elections were not a resounding defeat of Trumpism.' If Harvard Professor Larry Lessig is focused on Fix Democracy First, will he focus on fixing capitalism (beyond T) next? :) How?
Gerd Moe-Behrens continues to take a 'Hegelian' point of view (antithetical in a sense) regarding this election, and interestingly - https://twitter.com/GerdMoeBehrens/status/1324727523524173828?s=20 (You can see Gerd in some group videos here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm - from 2012 :)

Hi Taylor,
I really enjoyed and found interesting, and beautiful in a simple way, (your sending) Allan MacDonald playing "Lament for the Children" on the Scottish Small Pipes, and singing with it too -
"Here's the piobaireachd "Lament for the Children" by MacDonald as mentioned earlier:https://youtu.be/zCRbURorYE8 ... "

It's innovative on the SSP in my experience, and I appreciate his confidence too ... he's not worried about the lack of amazing skirl of the GHB with the SSP for example ...

Taylor,
Great to hear "The Silver Spear" too - and on Walsh Smallpipes with the baritone drone tuned to D
The Silver Spear (it's actually a reel):https://youtu.be/nPB8tSdnL6I
What key is "The Silver Spear" in, I wonder?
And what key are all these tunes in (for learning purposes) ?
The tunes are:
Oot Best da Vong
The Silver Spear
The Gray Old Lady of Rassay
The Clougher

Thanks for sending. The baritone drone sounds good, and adds!
Cheers, Scott

* * Previous bagpiping teachers - wow!
Hi Taylor,
Wow, in seeking out good Piobaireachd recordings for
The Company's LamentMackintosh's BannerLament for Alasdair Dearg MacDonnell of GlengarryGlengarry's Lament

I had some wow experiences yesterday evening, all a little piping ethnomusicological as well -
Just came upon: Joyce MacFarlane, based in Pittsburgh, PA, in the mid-1970s, and who was my 2nd piping teacher, and this recent picture of JOYCE (in Scotland with her husband Jimmy McIntosh, also of Pgh) brought me 'there' in some time travel, here -
Jimmy McIntosh, DR’s Scrapbook and the Day John MacFadyen Did the Double
https://pipingpress.com/2018/05/17/jimmy-mcintosh-drs-scrapbook-and-the-day-john-macfadyen-did-the-double/

And then John MacFadyen in this same article was a teacher at a College of PIping summer camp near the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in NC for a summer or two, thanks to Sandy Jones bringing him over from Scotland -
(Drawing parallels, I think "Doing the Double" - or "Did the Double" re John MacFadyen winning the 2 top piping prizes in Scotland in one year, could be somehow similar to WUaS having created 2 legal entities in California - the non-profit in CA (and 501 c 3 federally) World University and School, and the 2) for profit general stock company the WUaS Corporation, in California) - a kind of different "Doing the Double" :)
"John had pulled off the double, winning the Clasp and Gold Medal at the same meeting"

"winning both the Gold Medal competition and the Clasp at the Northern Meeting"

https://pipingpress.com/2018/05/17/jimmy-mcintosh-drs-scrapbook-and-the-day-john-macfadyen-did-the-double/
(Jimmy McIntosh's brogue, as you'll hear in another "Alasdair Dearg" email thread I'll send you, is very broad, a bit hard to understand, and he's lived in Pgh PA for decades, having left Scotland :))

John MacFadyen - http://schoolofpiping.com/photo_album/Pipers%20of%20Past%20Years%20©/slides/john-macfadyen.html
And here's a picture of John MacFadyen from the cover of his 1st volume of Bagpipe Tunes - https://i.pinimg.com/564x/d4/1c/e0/d41ce09c90a14b18956e59553114749f.jpg and https://www.pinterest.com/pin/196047390014890089/ - some of which I've shared with you, and many of which I find very 'lyrical.'

Recordings by him - https://www.discogs.com/John-MacFadyen-Champion-Piper-1968/release/15327136
And something further about John MacFadyen - https://www.pipesdrums.com/tag/john-macfadyen/

Ed Krintz was my first piping teacher, and thanks to Sandy Jones, both here:Ed Krintz has been a performer of the highland bagpipe for over 51 years, and has studied under P/M Sandy Jones, James MacIntosh, and the late John MacFadyen. He is a panel adjudicator for the EUSPBA, and currently teaches piping in the Charlotte, NC area.

http://www.pipebandsnc.com/brief-band-histories/

And Stuart Liddell is a teacher of mine in a sense too, and re -
Am liking how Stuart LIddell kind of becomes ONE with his pipes ... and then soars with high very rhythmic 'flight' flying directly into the sun or the light :)

Uniquely Stuart LIddell brilliant musical expressiveness ... and check out Gordon Duncan for other unique and brilliant Bagpiping musical expressiveness ... they've both created their own sound ..

Newspapers of record

Ma,
You sounded pretty good, after what you said about being down the night before.
How will they report the unfolding recounts that could decide this election, I wonder?
Here are the 4 newspapers of record in the US, and the electoral college tallies as I send this:

https://www.latimes.com/
B - 264 T - 214

https://www.washingtonpost.com/
B - 253 T - 214

https://www.nytimes.com/
B - 253 T - 214

https://www.wsj.com/
B - 264 T - 214

AND https://www.bostonglobe.com/
B - 264 T - 214
"Biden leads as battleground states continue to count votes
The presidential contest was still undecided Wednesday night, even after Joe Biden won Michigan and Wisconsin. Races in Nevada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia were close, and the Trump campaign prepared legal challenges."
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/11/04/metro/biden-takes-lead-michigan-race-still-too-early-call/

These papers and the media in general could continue to report these electoral college wins for Biden (https://twitter.com/JoeBiden) as the state vote counts shift around in the upcoming days? This could be hopeful.

Really nice to talk < Ma !

Ma, we seem to be entering a phase of counting culture in this country and election, different from counterculture, and how this is reported, and informs, symbolically the news, media, newspapers of record, and the conversation about the way the people have voted - re the electoral college and the popular vote - and the badness of tRump, and relative goodness of Biden and Harris is part of this. What do you think? And how did you sleep last night? Love, Scott

*

Ma,

And in this liminal betwixt and between counting culture time, is there a kind of American football approach to this election, of letting the clock run out on the game, so the winning team with the highest score, which then decides to apply this strategy execute this play, wins? And are the newspapers, familiar with this sports' strategy in their reporting, simply applying it editorially, writing-wise, and symbolically, to this election. (It's kind of a Taoist approach too ... Just waiting non-action wise (wu wei) with life :)

Are newspapers of record the coaches or best teAms as News' organizations, in addition to the teams of D & R?

Ma,

Great formatting, and thanks.

Here are 2 articles from Norwegian and Finnish newspapers of record. It's the first article, when and if states start submitting new or updated vote counts, that makes the distributed-ness of this vote tallying process quite difficult for an ineffectual despot wannanabe to respond to media-wise (via his Fox News' outlier of a paper?). And newspapers of record around the world can continue to report the 264 for Biden and 213 for Trump ... Hmmm .. . This could lead to Biden winning in the people or the publics' minds ...

In this state, Trump must strike back. Nevada announces new numbers soon.

Ma,

Now if T man were to concede (in some newspapers of record) because the Republican campaign saw his increasing law suits and battles as very costly and expensive in a number of ways, financially and politically, the whole thing would be over and Biden would win ... Will Trump say 'uncle' (due to whom in the Rep. Party campaign?) ... The count goes on ... :) And newspapers of record continue the daily News' cycles and reporting on political change ...

Dear Dick,

Thanks so much for your email reply. In reading your "Out of Africa" chapter in "Brookline Thursday Club Essays: 1995-2016" this morning, I laughed when I read on p 58-59: "But on the whole genes are very Republican. They are stable and do not like change. Mutations are rare" ... and regarding our unstable Rep. President? He could conceivably be voted out tomorrow. And could this recent "Biden is steady" article in the Boston Globe - https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/10/31/nation/biding-his-time-waiting-moment-come-him/ - have even been a response to your talk in the Brookline Thursday Club? :) And did these lines get a good laugh when you read your paper in Brookline (which I'm thinking may be Democratic base)?

The presidential contest was still undecided Wednesday night, even after Joe Biden won Michigan and Wisconsin. Races in Nevada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia were close, and the Trump campaign prepared legal challenges."

These papers and the media in general could continue to report these electoral college wins for Biden (https://twitter.com/JoeBiden) as the state vote counts shift around in the upcoming days? This could be hopeful.

Developing further the WUaS Corporation, and to explore distributing a single cryptocurrency via Universal Basic Income experiments:

UBI experiments to alleviate poverty worldwide, and to distribute a single cryptocurrency, backed by most central banks, and to some of all 7.8 billion people on the planet, each a Wikidata Q-item # or similar Wikidata Pin #, (and re WUaS Universitians as wiki teachers and learners in all ~200 countries and in all 7,117 known living languages) and this could emerge from California and from this WUaS Corporation ...

And at the bottom of the WUaS Educational Services' Store - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - you can find the WUaS Corporation's official active listing with the state of California.

Newspapers of record

Ma,
You sounded pretty good, after what you said about being down the night before.
How will they report the unfolding recounts that could decide this election, I wonder?
Here are the 4 newspapers of record in the US, and the electoral college tallies as I send this:
