0Glad to have received a dollar amount from edX for WUaS partnering with edX Online Campus: unlimited course enrollments for 50 WUaS students of $17,450 for one term (for January - April 2021?) which money WUaS will now seek to fundraise for (and eventually seek a $55,000 per year per student as reimbursements from nation states' and their counties' departments of education, and as WUaS seeks to build to MIT VALUE online degrees.
WUaS continues to seek 50 - 400 students for January 2021 to take verified edX courses (which edX said they would help with in terms of outreach too).

(See, too, below: "Your edX Online Campus Inquiry (from edX's Marissa DePaolo to Scott MacLeod at WUaS) Thursday, October 15, 2020)

4Regarding WUaS's 6 majors - EECS, Gen. Science, Gen. Engineering, English, History, Business - initially, and for undergraduates,

WUaS is exploring offering a hands-on online 'WUaS Computer Gaming' track in our EECS major, and with edX courses.
Could the introductory course for this be:
'CS50's Introduction to Game Development
https://www.edx.org/course/cs50s-introduction-to-game-development

(See, too: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/10/tabebuia-roseo-alba.html)

This would be in addition to -
'WUaS Home Robotics' re our General Engineering Major
- and a - 'WUaS realistic virtual earth for history' - re our History major
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/12/pacific-coast-ranges-how-best-to-add.html

Wondering how a Prof. Hugh Thomas who wrote 'The English and the Normans: Ethnic Hostility, Assimilation, and Identity 1066 - c.1220' could develop history in a COMPLETELY NEW way in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForHistory @WUaSPress #RealisticVirtualEarth thinking Google Streetview+

And how to create as interesting tracks for our other three majors? -
General Science

English
Business

.... and all initially via verified edX courses (eg. from MIT OCW > edX???) in part?

Your edX Online Campus Inquiry(from edX's Marissa DePaolo to Scott MacLeod at WUaS)
Thursday, October 15, 2020
Dear Marissa,
Since you began this email thread, I'm writing to you as well as to Matthew, Cameron (and Carolina) as a an edX team regarding World University and School.

Thanks to Matthew for sending pricing for 50 matriculating WUaS undergraduate students this January 2021 in 6 majors - of $17,450, as WUaS proceeds with licensing and accrediting potentially edX courses for both Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees. And thanks too to Matthew for letting WUaS know that edX doesn't have native integration with G Suite for Education, which G Suite (for Education) World University and School has been in for a number of years. It's in G Suite for Education that WUaS will eventually seek reimbursement from departments of education in all ~200 countries, and, with time, at what MIT itself asks for for an undergraduate degree (about $55,000) per year. In these regards, glad to see this morning on Twitter from Anant Agarwal that Google is joining edX - https://twitter.com/agarwaledu/status/1316732494394404864?s=19 - and in offering a course.
Unfortunately, however, and regarding edX pricing, WUaS doesn't have any money to speak of whatsoever. I could share with you the small list of grants WUaS has applied for unsuccessfully, as well as the October 2020 Grants' newsletter out of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's office in SF, if this helps. And since WUaS doesn't have a fundraising track record, would you by any chance be able to 'introduce,' or put WUaS in contact with, a first key funding source, before WUaS can set up WUaS Suite for Education for reimbursement from all ~206 countries - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Summer_Olympics_Parade_of_Nations - and their counties or states departments of education (as WUaS seeks their 'academic Olympic athlete students')?
I think WUaS could also benefit with someone at edX, or similar (eg for WUaS to hire, or engage someone at Google itself), to take on the administration of the WUaS G Suite for Education for our WUaS matriculating undergraduate program this January, as well as for planning for reimbursement from all ~200 countries (and even, brainstorming-wise for all 7.8 billion people on planet, each a wiki teacher or learner).

WUaS may also explore reaching out to contacts in the US State Department initially - and regarding the $17,450 for 50 students for unlimited edX enrollments beginning in January.
Thanks to Matthew for having done his edX business development job, and for giving WUaS some edX dollar figures to work with. Marissa, might you also be in a position to put us further in communication with Cameron Kaubris, for ex., about potential introductions to funding sources?

Also, Matthew, is the $17,450 for a 4 month period, - or for what time period does edX have in mind for the dollar figures of ~$349 per student or $17,450?  I'm wondering also about WUaS's 4 month terms (Jan-Apr, May-Aug, Sep-Dec), and what edX has planned for the self-pricing model of $350 per student - and toward WUaS's planned 4-year (with students basically taking 40 15-week-long CC-4 MIT OCW courses, roughly 10 per year, conceptually adapted into MITx or edX courses) for free-to-students' best STEAM CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric degrees (as WUaS licenses and accredits with agencies in California).
Thank you.
Sincerely, Scott

Scottish Small Piping lessons

Good playing, Taylor!
'The Company's Lament' Piobaireachd in full next week ...
'The Glasgow Police Pipers' jig at 105? (and maybe 120 bpm even)
Cheers, Scott

Taylor,
thanks for sharing the tune Gingling Geordie ... appreciating Callum Armstrong's explorations of it ... and both with an accompanying instrument (cello?), and in other keys (I think), and experimentally (eg at around 2:55 - I hear some Steeleye Span-like sounds in it too, which I enjoy) ... as well as his bringing music to the academic library (looks like a very 'Edinburgh library' too) from the inside ... by playing from the Dixon manuscript with bagpipes there ... and while it's not bringing rock and roll piping inside this Edinburgh library, it could head in that direction:)
Am appreciating again and again too this week the what I hear as exploding FIREWORKS (throughout due to his fingering technique) and unfolding BEGINNINGS of Yuan Sheng playing Bach Partitas here - https://youtu.be/s_num0eZIQ8 - (which amazing recording I've shared with you before). Am wondering how to bring such FIREWORKS and unfolding BEGINNINGS into both my upcoming SSP album, and our learning together.

I cam across too this Tweet this morning - 'Jimmy Page says he “reconnected with guitar” during lockdown'
https://twitter.com/RhapsodyML/status/1316767384414359552?s=20
(& also re these Ma & Marsalis Guidelines - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - re # 12 esp,, in a new way)
... and am wondering how further to connect with our bagpipes in the way Led Zeppelin band members connected with their music and instruments.
While Gingling Geordie isn't the metaphorical 'Bach music' of some of the tunes on my upcoming "Honey in the Bag" album (for me), it's fun (for me) to explore how Gingling Geordie might even become so ...  but there's something about the metaphorocal 'JS Bach composition' in great bagpipe tunes (for me) that I'd like to explore fulsomely too. (What is a lyrical tune (for me)? and What is a metaphorical JA Bach bagpipe tune?)
Taylor, "MacKintosh's Banner" is a lovely Piobaireachd (a 'Bach composition' in a sense too, for me) and looking forward 'to PIobaireachd-ing' with you tonight :) ... as well as to 'The Glasgow Police Pipers' and 'Gingling Geordie.'
Musical Cheers, Scotthttp://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/09/monotropa-uniflora-piobaireachd.html
(and just found this from 2017 - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/06/aurora-played-piobaireachd-companys.html - and re "The Company's Lament") ...

beauty and Piobaireachd? - again and to revisit -
All apart from what I'll coin as 'Piobaireachd philosophy,' here are a definition and some thoughts/connections about beauty (re Ma & Marsalis, initially) and Piobaireachd ...
Here's a definition of beauty: "a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, (especially the sight)"
2 never make a sound without hearing it first; hear it in your mind.
4 join feelings into your music when you feel bad, to integrate your feelings with your mind and body.
5 Relax and practice slowly.
7 Practice expressively.
Be serious – invest yourself expressively.

10 Think for yourself.
Don’t become a robot, but don’t dismiss what you’re taught.

12 Look for connections. (Make the social aspect of practicing regenerative - S.M.)
Music washes away the dust of everyday life from your feet.

and ... Bsynthesize all 4 Piobaireachds in CoP Yellow Tutor Vol. 4 together in your bodymind into 'one computer program' for playing all 200-300 'major' Piobaireachds (and not just the form underlying "The Company's Lament"? :) ... would take 'deep listening' and internalization :)
and ...Cexploring the Dixon manuscript may be a fascinating way to bring into circulation again new great tunes ...
"William Dixon manuscript - Wikipediaen.wikipedia.org › wiki › William_Dixon_manuscriptThe William Dixon manuscript, written down between 1733 and 1738 in Northumberland, is the oldest known manuscript of pipe music from the British Isles, and the most important source of music for the Border pipes"
... and even regarding - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes - with Scottish smallpipes not only emerging from the GHB but also from Northumbrian and borders' piping ...

But how too to find the most lyrical tunes, in general, to each of our ears? ... Write an algorithm for this (with echoes of brilliant Tufts' Anthropology Prof. Nick Seaver's work on the culture of algorithm and recommender systems ... and now there's some similar in Google Tensorflow https://twitter.com/npseaver/status/1308872685661888514?s=20 ... )

DI'd like to be able to think & speak as remarkably as Princeton philosopher, and Humean, David Kellogg Lewis - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/david-lewis/ - does philosophically, but regarding beauty and Piobaireachd, and maybe we can explore with time in conversation ... (since this Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy article says he wrote in the field of aesthetics too :)
... and here's something with David Lewis in the title from UC Davis Social Sciences (as a kind of expression of a 'California school of philosophy' even? ... I went to a Stanford conference on this a few years ago (in blog too))
A Philosophical Problem: From David Lewis to Signaling Networks

What Experience Teaches (David Lewis - 1981)https://youtu.be/BMLIdwT8OSUhttps://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/09/great-swamp-national-wildlife-refuge.html

ELooks like Siubhal may have been misspelled in Yellow Tutor -
Siubhal

A type of Piobaireachd variation, pronounced "shoo-al", similar to the Dithis. Consisting of a G gracenote to Low A, followed by the theme note. If the theme note is a B or C, it is accompanied by a D gracenote.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_bagpipe_terms

Let's explore further the Canntaireachd too for the siubhal :)

Thoughts, questions, ideas, suggestions?
Cheers, Scott

Taylor,
How to connect with one's instrument in new ways - here now SCOTTISH SMALL PIPES (and inspired by rock and roll in some ways) ? ... IS A QUESTION I'd like to teach (and learn further, beyond Stuart Liddell's meditation-brain with drones I'll call this) ... So that one feels connected with and gets connected esp - in transformative ways too esp ...
Garage band bass and guitar jamming ... into rockin' folk rock (and maybe solo-wise too) ... :)
(Open Band could help ... But also freely, as well as possibly via online sessions in real real time :) ...

Taylor WarrenThu, Oct 15, 8:26 PM (3 days ago)to meDid some googling and found this entry on the tune's background and meaning:https://tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:Cuddy_Clauder
Bit of a bawdier connotation than I thought!
Regarding accompaniment, I found two recordings of the tune on Youtube on both smallpipes and borderpipes with fiddle accompaniment. They're both playing in unison. I honestly like the second recording a bit more; I feel like the fiddle drowns out the smallpipes a bit on the first tune.
I'll let you know if I can find anything else...

There's a lot of beauty (for me) in this European orchestral music - re thinking about what music is, - and it's so dynamic - and they make music so well technically, but appreciating the dynamic rebel aspect of rock and roll too :) ... Gordon Duncan comes to mind - and his piping, and technically (but Stuart Liddell's technique and beautiful playing come into conversation with this symphonic trailer for me, more so :) how to learn aspects of all of this ?

Taylor,

Maestro Marc Minkowski has posted some further lovely recordings (Mozart and Bach) at the bottom of his French identity page -
https://www.lagence-management.com/en/artists/conductors/marc-minkowski/

Identity-wise, he's a variety of identities (mentioned right above the videos), - and I'm interested in questions of identity and Scottish Small Piping music re learning SSPs esp (and theoretically, and identity-wise, and as an anthropologist, one key text for me is Manuel Castells' "The Power of Identity," - and I'm a Castellian - which is the middle book in his trilogy "The Rise of the Network Society," 2nd edition aka "The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture").
As a Frenchman and conductor, I'd think that Maestro Minkowski knows - and even teaches' musicians - all the opera and theater narratives in word and image - of some aspects of the French landscape of the mind, its wit, history, irony, and thinking, and ways of being French cosmopolitan ...
And Scottish identity, piping-wise - for ex., the landscape, heritage, narratives, thinking, Scots' Gaelic the Highlands and Islands, can all inform one's Scottish Small Piping in fascinating ways - am not advocating an ethnological or anthropological approach to understanding Scottish culture or ways - and even Celtic Knot-wise, as well as the 6 Celtic nations - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_languages - or languages' minds, esp., but it's worth it, I'd think, not to tune out this identity aspect of learning SSPs :)

Another thought:

all these symphony musicians (in Maestro Minkowski's videos, for ex.) have successfully competed musically - and intensely and skillfully technically - in their careers to get the best paid positions in the musical world ... and they all look so relaxed in concert (and have practiced so so much in their lives!:)

And while I've listened to all 3 of Conductor Minkowski's videos at the bottom of the Agence-France page, I am appreciating in particular the trailer - ttps://www.lagence-management.com/en/artists/conductors/marc-minkowski/ -as well as the Bach (and first short Mozart) ...
... and re competitions in GHB too? And newly online for Scottish Small Pipes (at WUaS even eventually?)

Gordon Duncan, and Stuart Liddell, for ex., are / were significant competitors too ... appreciating Gordon Duncan's rebelliousness out of the '60s (which has different 'effects' culturally in Scotland, than perhaps in the USA) ...
Thanks for 'Cuddy Clauder' ...
Where's the rock and roll in symphonic music (but not pop:)?,Scott

Scott MacLeod11:24 AM (54 minutes ago)to TaylorTaylor,
Some further thoughts in the vein of this thread -
Just came across this 2016 'The Atlantic' article on the web by Sheila Liming, who teaches English in VT or ND and (as well as plays) the GHB and the Scottish parlor pipes too (but I can't find any Youtube videos of her piping) -
CULTURE
Bagpipes: A Rock-and-Roll History
For decades the instrument has played a cacophonous—and subtly political—role in popular music.
https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/07/the-bagpipes-legacy-of-noise/490217/ - with no mention of Gordon Duncan.
Am curious, brainstorming-wise, how to write interesting seconds, or harmonies, for "The Glasgow Police Pipers" for a duet too ... at 120 bpm (like Stuart Liddell ... ), played well and then leading to improvisation in a whole series of jigs after this ...
Searched on "Bagpipe harmonies or seconds for GHB jigs" but didn't find anything ...
Looking forward to your playing of the Piobaireachd "The Company's Lament" on Thursday ...
Cheers, Scott

[UUCPA Choir] Suggestions please for laptop and car replacement

Unitarian Universality Church of PA Choir

For the record of good technologies in the midst of the information age ...

to ChoirHi All:
My 3 year-old Samsung laptop (love it) has died. It worked fine yesterday; won’t boot up today. Want to replace it ASAP! Went to local Best Buy where I was told it’s not repairable. It also doesn’t have the newest version of mine. Now have to find out if Samsung still makes it.
Two requests. If you have a laptop (not Apple) with a 15” or larger screen that you can recommend please do. When I get one I’ll likely need help setting it up. Can you assist? Fortunately I did a backup a few days ago so not much will be lost.
Second dilemma. My 2013 Prius (love it) needs major, expensive  repairs. I want to replace it. I can’t afford an EV, so looking at late model hybrids. Thinking another Prius, though not fond of newer body shape. I’ll be shopping this weekend.
If you have a Prius, 2016 or newer, please let me know if your‘re happy with. If you have a different make/model  of hybrid to recommend please do. If you know of a good Toyota dealer please let me know. I plan to look at and drive cars at the dealership, then search elsewhere.
I’ll stop now. Writing this on my phone, thumbs getting tired! Thanks in advance for your input.
Cheers,Diane

It's a 2016 Toyota Prius c that is the first year of the 4th Generation Prius, by the way, and I hope you find a laptop that's helpful - https://www.cnet.com/news/best-laptop-for-2020-dell-xps-hp-spectre-macbook-pro-more/ .
I'd have hoped for MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch to have figured out real real time music making / singing / online virtual choir by now ... am hoping for WUaS to make this happen (Google Stanford-centric wise) but not yet still ...
Did you ever hear of or know of UU Minister Paul Sawyer as well ? See his video here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/10/spicebush-swallowtail.html (and https://youtu.be/jmsWXa5D-As ) - and he's great (and was pretty involved in the '60s and '70s, a time I study and regarding my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project esp ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ ). From Massachusetts, and a Harvard grad, Rev Paul Sawyer invited the Grateful Dead to play at a Unitarian Church in southern California on Feb 6 1966 - http://deadsources.blogspot.com/2017/06/february-6-1966-acid-test-unitarian.html - but this show isn't in Archive.org - https://archive.org/search.php?query=Grateful%20Dead%201966 - interestingly, and I appreciate his 2010 conversation in this video. My new 3 chamber suite in El Cerrito 94530, just north of Berkeley,  with spectacular views of the SF Bay and its 3 main bridges stays relatively cool because it's close to the earth, below the house, and behind it, with a big porch above extending over the pretty garden patio too (a 4th out of doors' living space 'space' ...

HOW TOO TO connect further with N...., after she followed me on Twitter a few weeks' ago, and since she's from the Bay Area too (her sisterK 's web page said, who's also ...), speaking of Genetics' further :)?

Atlantic horseshoe crab as species (in images) is among aldest at 445 MILLION years old ...

And familiar from Cuttyhunk waters, having lived all those geological periods through time, replicating itself successfully generation after generation ... (in fairly cool water!:) ...
But I'm wondering what a MIT / Harvard Genetics' Professor George Church thinks is possible for a single organism like you, Ma, or me, ... And from what he's learned already genetically from mice and dogs for example ... In terms of genetic engineering aging reversal for humans ... 445 million years for a single organism or body mind is a very very long time :)
Speculatively, scientifically and interestingly ... :)

Would be fun to have a costume party on Cuttyhunk where everybody came dressed as a local species, a periwinkle, a horseshoe crab - such an interesting shaped creature, almost a helmet, a seagull a lobster, a striped bass :)) I'd come as seaweed - eelgrass :)

Jane MacLeod5:05 PM (5 hours ago)to meHi Scott,  While you have 90 degrees we had our first frost last night.  I bought some brackets to have installed in the storage closet here to maximize the space: need to put away three outdoor chairs and the garden hose; hope that plan works out.

If you think of it, could you take a couple of photos of the inside and outside of your digs and attach them to an e-mail?  It’s nice to visualize where you live.  (And thanks for a couple of photos that might have been part of an ad for your new place — showing a car parked in front of the house?

I’m going to watch via live stream the first concert of Chamber Music Pittsburgh’s current season, with my new sound enhancing ear phones.  Hope I can make it all work.

Beautiful day here - in the fifties and sunny.  Rain forecast for the next three days.  We need it, but I prefer sun.

Juniper: Agenda & News for open World Univ & Sch Monthly Business Meeting AND the WUaS Corp on Sat. 10/17/20 at 9am PT

World University's open monthly business meeting Agenda for October 17, 2020:

Dear Larry,

Thanks for the 10/17/20 WUaS monthly business meeting this morning. Minutes to follow. Here's a math question: can you get 7.8 billion unique IDs or numbers out of '27.74.246.23' or '0z337ya3q5rqcd' (see below too). How would one approach such a question? :)
I'm really not fundraising oriented whatsoever (and, - look at the WUaS track record in these regards), so I'll follow up with my friend Shahrzad Shirvani re her following up on her contacts - and potentially regarding connecting with departments of education in counties in Iran, through her neurosurgeon father, for example - and possibly also with the Iranian community in the US, re students, and the counties they live in for reimbursement. If you'd like to generate a list of 500 possible donors (outside of Iranians), I'd invite you to do so, since I think you'd be much better at fundraising in these areas than I, partly because I think you know the language of fundraising, with a feedback loop, from both Chatham and MIT communities, and related patterns of giving regarding these groups of alumni. The idea of fundraising sort of shuts me down, or turns me off, as well.
I'm also going to postpone teaching my course beginning in mid-October (per last month's Minutes) until January 2021, and minute this too ... it would be great to get to know WUaS students in person in group video, and add many many other personal interactive elements (in a Friendly Quaker sense too) to our WUaS online education in all 200 countries, and 7117 languages - i.e. 1-1 tutorials, for example, in the Cambridge / Oxford model for human contact - and to create academic careers too. How to create this personal element well or extraordinarily (and re MIT and Stanford, and STEM majors, esp. too) this well - re Oxbridge as a best example, perhaps, is a fascinating questions
Here are all subjects, as a kind of course catalog at edX - https://www.edx.org/subjects - but best too for prospective students to go to the edX front page and click on the 'courses' pop down menu ...(and let's not lose track of EECS at MIT OCW -https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/ - for example, with its multitude of adaptable into WUaS Open edX possibilities, as well as its MIT Experimental Study Group Lego Robotics' course - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/ - which I hope WUaS can adapt into our 3 Lego Robotics' kits as semester long Home Robotics and beginning programming courses, and with - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html).
Sincerely, Scott
Please see these initial approaches to create a single WUaS student sign on process, regarding 3 separate databases of names, in order to take edX courses for credit -
1EDX - databaseThinking through how a WUaS student might register in verified edX courses, and how WUaS would retain their contact info (re legit edX, WUaS G Suite for Education, and our WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki/Wikidata), I first went to (without logging into my edX account)  -
'CS50's Introduction to Game Development
https://www.edx.org/course/cs50s-introduction-to-game-development
And it took me to this register page - https://courses.edx.org/register -

with this information -

"Already have an edX account? Sign in.
Create an account using
... Microsoft.
or create a new one here
Full Name
Public Username
Email
Password
Country or Region of Residence
By creating an account, you agree to the Terms of Service and Honor Code and you acknowledge that edX and each Member process your personal data in accordance with the Privacy Policy.
Support education research by providing additional information
Create Account"

and importantly the honor code -

and then I logged in, and got to - https://courses.edx.org/course_modes/choose/course-v1:HarvardX+CS50G+Games/ - with NO PLACE to add WUaS as a user ...

2WUaS G SUITE FOR EDUCATION - database
having put a GDocs' sign in form on the WUaS home page for years - worlduniversityandschool.org - without the back end form working (and it's now removed), I just searched on 'how to use g suite for education for matriculating classes' and found - https://support.google.com/a/answer/2856827?hl=en - so it looks like it's doable.
It might look something like, once a student signs in - https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.thinglink.com%2Fhc%2Farticle_attachments%2F360052117854%2FG_Suite_2.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.thinglink.com%2Fhc%2Fen-us%2Farticles%2F360039467914-Using-G-Suite-for-student-and-teacher-registration&tbnid=BvDIpjatehWD7M&vet=12ahUKEwiGu6aRrrzsAhUGNa0KHYsvBkoQMygHegQIARA1..i&docid=q3DS8ayVFgDCFM&w=1280&h=645&q=how%20to%20use%20g%20suite%20for%20education%20for%20matriculating%20classes&ved=2ahUKEwiGu6aRrrzsAhUGNa0KHYsvBkoQMygHegQIARA1
at bottom - https://support.thinglink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039467914-Using-G-Suite-for-student-and-teacher-registration
and then we'd have to figure out how to integrate the edX catalog in this process, so WUaS retains the students' names, emails

eg
https://admin.google.com/u/1/ac/users

Head of Sri Lanka WUaS unique WUaS G Suite ID - https://admin.google.com/u/1/ac/users/0z337ya3q5rqcd
(srilanka@worlduniversityandschool.org)
Peter Bothe / My Livestram at World Univ & Sch unique WUaS G Suite ID  - https://admin.google.com/u/1/ac/users/4bvk7pj0lk29q5
(livestream@worlduniversityandschool.org
(I'm assuming WUaS could get 7.8 billion WUaS G Suite IDs which would be secure)

3WUaS MIRAHEZE MEDIAWIKI - database
And as a student logs into G Suite they could also be assigned a secure WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki permanent ID (as part of the database process)
eg
Contact the editor:

mail: No email address
wiki: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/User:27.74.246.23

(I'm assuming WUaS could get 7.8 billion WUaS WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki IDs which would be secure, and that these could work/be intraoperative with 7.8 billion WUaS G Suite IDs)

World University and School
0Glad to have received a dollar amount from edX for WUaS partnering with edX Online Campus: unlimited course enrollments for 50 WUaS students for $17,450 for one term (January - April 2021) which money WUaS will now seek to fundraise for (and eventually seek as reimbursements from nation states' and counties' departments of education), and as WUaS seeks to build to MIT VALUE online degrees. So WUaS continues to seek 50 - 400 students for January to take verified edX courses (which edX said they would help with in terms of outreach too)

1someone at edX to take on the WUaS G Suite for Education for our WUaS matriculating undergraduate program this January, as well as for planning for reimbursement from all ~200 countries (and even, brainstorming-wise for all 7.8 billion people on planet).

Someone alternatively in the US state department to do WUaS's G Suite for all 200 countries' students?

WUaS is exploring offering a hands-on online 'WUaS Computer Gaming' track in our EECS major, and with edX courses.

* * * See, too:

Dear Marissa,
Since you began this email thread, I'm writing to you as well as to Matthew, Cameron (and Carolina) as a team.

Also, Matthew, is the $17,450 for a 4 month period, - or for what time period does edX have in mind for the dollar figures of ~$349 per student or $17,450 for 4 months?

Victor,
My Yoga Mac Flower @ gmail. com email address seems to have fallen into the void of the The Embodiment Conference ... I just tried to register for your
free online "55 minute yoga class taught by both Angela and Victor with the title ‘Between Body and Soul” " - https://angela-victor.com/blogs/victor/embodiment-conference-14-25-october-2020 - via 'The Embodiment Conference" conference beginning tomorrow - and received no information whatsoever from this conference web site. Gmail address seems to have become disembodied! :)
Thoughts on how I can take your class here (but not yet interactively with you teaching remotely, since you & Angela are not heading in the online interactive direction! :)
Greetings from a new 'safe house' in another part of the SF Bay Area (but I may move back into Canyon 94516 house, if things become safer there at some point in the future!)

Hi Ma,
I found this morning while doing laundry that my new place is good for reading books. Laundry machimes inside, jeans getting washed, I found I could pull myself away from the computer to read physical books (still 'Communication Power' and 'The Crofter and the Laird' and rereading the 'Tao the Ching') ... It used to be I had to pull myself away from the boob tube [image error]

1Glad to have received a dollar amount from edX for WUaS partnering with edX Online Campus: unlimited course enrollments for 50 WUaS students for $17,450 for one term (January - April 2021) which money WUaS will now seek to fundraise for (and eventually seek as reimbursements from nation states' and counties' departments of education), and as WUaS seeks to build to MIT VALUE online degrees. So WUaS continues to seek 50-400 students for January to take verified edX courses (which edX said they would help with in terms of outreach too)
2Regarding our WUaS 6 majors - EECS, Gen. Science, Gen. Engineering, English, History, Business - initially, and for undergraduates, WUaS is exploring offering a hands-on online Computer Gaming track in our EECS major, and with edX courses. (SEE BELOW)
3Open Monthly Business Meeting this Saturday October 17, 2020 at 9am Pacific Time - please let me know if you'd like to join this conversation.

Computer Gaming track in WUaS's EECS major?

In thinking about MIT OCW-centric World Univ & Sch's EECS major, and Theo's interest in a Computer Gaming degree, I came across this Harvardx edX course -

October 9, 2020

Good morning, Ma!

Very clear morning below the clouds re seeing the orange Golden Gate Bridge, and newly the new Bay Bridge, with it's beautiful white mast+like and rigging architecture ... But not the Sutro tower above SF (DUE TO CLOUDS ABOVE) And so many landmasses across the Bay ...

Seemed to have lost an email I sent yesterday (which said it had been sent by this account) ... about saying hi to 'Hey-Zeus' the gardener ...

$395 on the Toyota Palo Alto estimate and $83 in the end ... But car is still at risk re stolen key, with nothing Toyota Palo Alto can do about it.

How's your day going and what are you up to this weekend?

Love, Scott

Hi Ma,

How are you? And how's your day going? Was really nice to talk to you last night (from in front of the UU church).

Am also really really enjoying the rye full-grain bread Ed brought over yesterday (and am thinking of it as a house-warming gift even).

Ed and I had a nice home-made meal too ... out on the garden patio on an amazing afternoon!

On with:

Scottish small pipes' album - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/western-honey-bee-re-my-upcoming-honey.html

poetry book - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/10/scarlet-ibis-light-float-sit-watsu.html

and UC Berkeley tourism studies' talk :) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/08/japanese-honeysuckle-beginning-virtual.html

... and with big educational project (am seeking to develop a 'rockin' 'Computer Gaming' track to the EECS undergraduate Bachelor's major) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/10/tabebuia-roseo-alba.html

What are you up to this week?

(Glad I'm in this 'safe house' for the time being, which I mentioned to Ed too - and to Peter B in Bremen, to whom I wrote that it might be temporary too!)

Time to go on a long walk up a fairly steep hill later this afternoon :)

And would like to go traveling beyond this ... Hmm ... (and Harbin.org is open, even if the media says most organizations medically would benefit from closing due to coronavirus cover-19 pandemic)

Can see the 3 bridges (Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, and Richmond Bridge) presently on a hazy clear day :)

Love, Scott

Multilateral international relations mean security for small nationsCOLUMNS MP TALK 08 OCTOBER 2020
Finland’s representative democracy has played an important role during our first one hundred years of independence. Strong and tried-and-tested state institutions have provided stability and confidence in political decision making—in times of war and peace. During the Second World War in Europe, only the parliaments of Finland and Britain continued to function without interruption throughout the war years.

GREG MANKIW'S BLOGRandom Observations for Students of EconomicsSUNDAY, JUNE 07, 2020What I've been watchingOver the past week, I have watched the six-part HBO miniseries  The Plot Against America , which came out in March. It is based on the 2004 Philip Roth novel of the same title and tells an alternative history in which FDR is defeated in 1940 by the fascist-sympathizing Charles Lindbergh through the eyes of a Jewish family living in Newark, NJ. Compelling story, well acted. It is the best piece of television I have seen in years.

Thanks, Shayan, for your edifying UC Berkeley TSWG talk. Am curious now about Semester at Sea food menus (since 1963), as well as Tall Ships' menus, & postmodern historical approaches to complement what I think of as your modernist approach to tourism food history, & re Tourism Studies' theory, and regarding:
Gazing at the Box: Tourism in the Context of the Internet and Globalization (Internetity)
 http://scottmacleod.com/anth250v.htm
As a history of cruise ship menus, to the Caribbean, in a sense, and regarding a tourism studies’ approach vis-a-vis cruise passengers where ’tourism can be defined as visiting marked sites, often involving travel, or more specifically, following off site markers to onsite markers’ (a definition of tourism by Dean MacCannell), in what ways could postmodern approaches to history offer complementary analysis to what I think of as your modernist approach to history. (And in these regards, I'm exploring developing 'internetity' - a word, comparable with modernity and postmodernity, as conditions, I coined in a 2001 paper in Nelson Graburn's course - approaches to tourism history). (And also, for example, has Semester at Sea's cooks prepared menus of the food of the countries they are coming to next - in the Caribbeans - for college students on board?)

And here are my questions from the Zoom text chat:

"Did you come across, by any chance, menus from individual cruising boats with smaller parties than large cruise lines - eg sailing and power boats - that might offer helpful contrasts and comparisons re approaches to your interpretation of tourist mediation in the Caribbean (eg Bohemian type cruising in the 20th century, hippy Greenpeace type sailing craft in the 1960s and 1970s - who may have also lived long-term in the Caribbean)?"

"Thank you, Shayan, for your interesting talk! (Am wondering further regarding my above questions, is the role of other kinds of cruise ship menus from ships which are schools - e.g. some Tall Ships - and with an educational mission, or Semester at Sea, or even historical reenactments (if these exist) … re teaching the mediation of touristic cultural encounters  - and even as critical approaches to large cruise lines? (e.g. 'alternative cruising’ with paying passengers). (And in what ways, regarding my own research, could one reconstruct such large cruise line experiences in virtual reality eg here - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForOceans?src=hashtag_click ?) Thanks. (And following on Nelson's question, what role, for example, might rum play on the menu of such alternative ships - and similar - re mediating cultural encounters even?)"

Dear Scott,

Thank you for touching base! I remember your questions well; they were thoughtful and engaging, and I appreciate you bringing those to our attention yesterday. Certainly, I think it contributed to the learning experience for everyone, including myself! Additionally, I appreciate you appending your article. I shall read it with pleasure. I'm also appending here an article you might enjoy, which takes on cruise ship dining in the context of globalization; it's sociological in its analysis, limited largely to the 21st century.
I mentioned, indeed, that I would mention some sources that may contain the types of menus you're after. The first place I would look is New York Public Library's "What's on the Menu?" page. There are thousands upon thousands of historical menus there, including hundreds for cruises: http://menus.nypl.org/menus. I've also had luck at the Culinary Institute of America Special Collections & Archives, as well as at various museums dedicated to steamships and cruise ship tourism. For instance, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, as well as the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City, are just two such museums where I've found historical cruise menus.
Regarding your question about speciality cruise menus, I would start by searching for the best cruises for a particular subject. "Best cruises for vegans/jazz music/gourmet cuisine." You'll probably get some extremely select and niche cruise lines that many haven't heard of, but these themed cruises are becoming increasingly popular; they have been since the 1990s as a way for the differentiation of the cruise product. Thereafter, I would go out to the websites for those lines and find menus. If they're not there, you might contact companies and ask them to send you photographs of their menus (Carnival did this for me, and I imagine any cruise line would have copies of its menus for interested clientele).
I hope this answers your questions, Scott. I look forward to keeping in touch!
Best,Shayan

Dear Shayan,
Thank you for your email, and the menu resource. What an interesting abundant evidence focus for your historical explorations. I don't see however the appended paper you mention. And here are some further theoretical questions:
How would you describe your theoretical orientation in terms of your historiography? And if in Tourism Studies, your historical theses are theoretically potentially Dean MacCannell-informed, - https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13032917.2015.1063283 - I'm curious how they might also become John Urry informed eg rehttps://books.google.com/books/about/The_Tourist_Gaze.html?id=-t9-AAAAMAAJ as a leading Tourism Studies' thinker regarding postmodernity (potentially in contrast to Dean MacCannell). (Please check out my "Gazing at the Box: Tourism ... " paper especially in these regards - http://scottmacleod.com/anth250v.htm - and regarding advertising discourse too, as an aspect of Tourism Studies' theorizing - and newly and exploratorily  regarding the discipline of history). And theoretically could new approaches emerge in historiography which would be 'internetity' informed ? This is a new theoretical opportunity to write about - and in the academic disciplines, Tourism Studies-wise, of history, as well as Anthropology, for example.
Thanks for the menus' link!
Having traveled on Semester at Sea twice (and my father was the academic dean on the first voyage in 1999), I might be able to put you in contact with sources for historical menus from SAS if interested.

Dear Scott,

Thank you for these resources!
To answer your question, I engage with both MacCannell and Urry. My argument inherently incorporates the concept of authenticity - the touristic search for thus, as well as how corporations have advertised authentic cultural encounters. At the same time, how is that concept filtered through actors like corporations, local government authorities, and inhabitants themselves? I take a postcolonial approach too, for instance the racial divisions of labor on the ship as well as colonial representations in Caribbean cruise advertisements, especially at the discursive level - ideas around cleanliness and sanitized cultural encounters.
I look forward to reading your paper, as well as the sources you've appended. As for the article, my apologies. I forgot to attach it. Please find it herewith.
Best,

Shayan

Abstract:

Cruises were a means for wealthy Americans to encounter Caribbean societies in mediated ways. The ship, though traversing foreign waters, remained a luxurious and thus familiar atmosphere, complete with many home comforts and rendered an elite experience through the French-influenced fare on offer. Yet, cruise ship tourists also explored Caribbean ports of call wherein contact with sociocultural Others was much more conspicuous. This paper uses cruise menus to explore how the ship was rendered a luxurious space, as well as cruise travel guides and accounts to study how cruise passengers were asked to view foreign societies before their voyages, and how they encountered those cultures once they debarked the ship. It explores how cruise tourists toured foreign lands in ways that were ultimately sanitized. The familiarization of Caribbean cultures was accomplished by augmenting references to exoticism with references to American or European cultures, and especially through colonial symbolism. Thus, an otherwise foreign experience was rendered safe and palatable for American cruise tourists.

Speaker Bio:

Shayan Lallani is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Ottawa. His research explores how mass-market cruise lines in the American market produced cultural encounters through dining experiences in the late twentieth century. His articles have appeared in Food, Culture & Society, and the Journal of Tourism History.

Scott MacLeod <sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org>11:23 AM (1 hour ago)to ShayanThanks, Shayan,
Thanks for sharing your 'theoretical arguments' with me. As a Castellian (Manuel Castells - sociology of the internet) - and an anthropologist of actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs since the 1960s (which has a restaurant and menus, but is not a cruise ship) - all regarding social science theory (of which Castells has been compared with both Max Weber and Karl Marx) - I think I seek some clarifications in your Routledge paper's argument:
Shayan argues "that while companies target a growing demand for culturally immersive dining experiences, they do not seek to offer complete immersion in any one culture but cosmopolitanism through a combination of multiple themed establishments on a mobile platform."

Do you mean something like the following?:
Shayan argues "that while companies target [marketing to paying customers with] a growing demand for culturally immersive [onboard pre-globalization identity-authentic eating experience eg. Jamaican, Barbados, etc. ... which from your TSWG talk could be/was some idea of French cuisine, at least in the past] dining experiences, they do not seek to offer complete immersion [eg onboard increasingly-authentic Jamaican restaurants, in MacCannell modernity sense, that one might find in Jamaica?] in any one culture but [hybrid cultural meanings regarding] cosmopolitanism [communication processes 'including or containing people from many different countries'] through a combination of multiple themed establishments [e.g. Jamaican, Barbadian - or newly Caribbean Cruise Line cuisine, as a pastiche of foods] on a mobile platform [cruise ships]."

If so, I come to a sentence from my paper, theoretically, regarding your paper:
"Thurot and Thurot argue that MacCannell “told his readers about a society which had virtually disappeared.”7 Thurot and Thurot might argue that tourism doesn’t reflect the alienation of modernity, but rather reflects people who are trying to follow a particular lifestyle, important to their own culture.8"

(and not a new definition of internet 'authenticity' - eg seeing/engaging in bodymind paintings in the Louvre museum in person, vs. seeing them on the internet in a virtual Louvre in a myriad of new ways).

Best, Scott
