The post Adventures in Hyperdocs – SULS0118 appeared first on Shake Up Learning.
Sarah McKinney is a former kindergarten teacher and is currently a K-12 Instructional Technologist in South Carolina.
She also just joined the Shake Up Learning Training Team!
She is passionate about using technology to allow for choice, enhance student engagement, and provide opportunities for creation and collaboration.
In this podcast episode, Kasey takes a deep dive with Sarah about creating and using Hyperdocs in the classroom.
A learning experience completely centered around students that will revolutionize your lesson plans.
Take a deep-dive into Hyperdocs with Sarah McKinney!

As an instructional technologist, Sarah wears many hats and actively engages with many tech tools for educators. Seesaw, a digital tool that helps students demonstrate and share their learning, is one of the tools Sarah regularly shares with the educators in her district. This summer Seesaw will be hosting a virtual conference where you can hear Sarah share ideas for building community. She will share ideas for districts, buildings, as well as classrooms.
An Introduction to HyperdocsAs Sarah was stepping out of the classroom and into her new role, she spent time looking for ways to help teachers incorporate technology that would provide engaging and effective learning. This is when she discovered the Hyperdoc Handbook, which introduced her to a new engaging way to package lessons.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "shauplea-20";amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual";amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart";amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon";amzn_assoc_region = "US";amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links";amzn_assoc_asins = "1735601829";amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit";amzn_assoc_linkid = "45e28ed74bb20171862e30ab5be2b0c3";
Sarah explains how using Hyperdocs brings joy back into lesson creation. Hyperdocs move teachers away from duplicating a paper worksheet into a digital one. They allow teachers to go beyond a digital document with a series of links. Most of all, Hyperdocs take students beyond the learning of recall. A Hyperdoc is a completely student-centered learning experience.
Another common misconception of Hyperdocs is that they are the same as a choice board. While Hyperdocs do in fact include elements of choice, they are more comprehensive than a choice board. Within a Hyperdoc, depending on the goals and outcomes, a teacher can use Google Docs or Slides, SeeSaw, Nearpod, YouTube videos, and a host of other tech tools. The beauty of a Hyperdoc is that the teacher can tailor the learning experience.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "onamzshauplea-20";amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual";amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart";amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon";amzn_assoc_region = "US";amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links";amzn_assoc_asins = "1733646892";amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit";amzn_assoc_linkid = "35efc9127d1fac333dd78e714586a151";
When creating a Hyperdoc, teachers want to first, as with all lessons, consider the end goal or objective for the students. Sometimes a smaller goal can mean a short-term Hyperdoc with only a few steps included from the learning cycle. Teachers might consider a longer time period to complete the full Hyperdoc learning cycle, for multiple goals or products.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "shauplea-20";amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual";amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart";amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon";amzn_assoc_region = "US";amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links";amzn_assoc_asins = "1735601802";amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit";amzn_assoc_linkid = "4c02c8cc44526bc9fbb710edf527215a";
The typical learning cycle includes each of the following: engage, explore, explain, apply, share, reflect, and extend. Students work through various materials and methods for learning content, at each of these stages, then demonstrate their understanding before moving on to the next. In Kasey’s book, Shake Up Learning, she included a Hyperdoc unit designed to accompany the novel Wild Robot.
Taking a look at the learning cycle used throughout examples can spark ideas for teachers in making their own Hyperdoc lessons. Both Kasey and Sarah suggest looking through a lot of different examples, rather than only searching through a specific content category. For example, all subjects teach vocabulary. Browsing many examples will help generate ideas for different ways to include vocabulary in a Hyperdoc you might create.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "shauplea-20";amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual";amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart";amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon";amzn_assoc_region = "US";amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links";amzn_assoc_asins = "1946444693";amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit";amzn_assoc_linkid = "3567fefd26ae685b347909c6cb09d453";
One of the best places to find free examples and templates to create your own is in the Teachers Give Teachers collection. Here you can search for different subjects to find, and then share, a complete Hyperdoc lesson or the template for one.
Another great option when creating a Hyperdoc lesson is to work with colleagues. Bringing several minds together for ideas and splitting up the workload of creating each component can bring about a powerhouse Hyperdoc learning experience for students.
Best Practices for CreationAlways start with your audience in mind. Sarah explains how Hyperdocs can be used with Pre-K through 12 students, but there is also a place for administrators to use Hyperdocs for their staff. Knowing which tech tools the audience will feel comfortable with is also important to consider.
Hyperdocs can be used for a single concept or short-term lesson, but they can also be used for a longer unit or portfolio type of learning experience. Deciding the length from the start will help keep the learning focused. It is best to choose one focus or topic when packaging the learning.
What sets a Hyperdoc apart from other teaching tools is the interactivity of the learning. Be sure to include those interactive elements with a variety of options. Remember, it’s not a document filled with links. There are so many options to choose from, so start small and grow as you go. Teachers have used this pandemic season to grow when it comes to using technology. The Hyperdoc learning experience can be one of those tools to bridge the in-person and remote learning needs.

27 Formative Assessment Tools for Your Classroom
The post 27 Formative Assessment Tools for Your Classroom appeared first on Shake Up Learning.
The Shake Up Learning community is always chatting and sharing digital tools and lesson ideas for the K12 classroom. Recently, we discussed our favorite formative assessment tools for the classroom, and I wanted to share these here for you as a resource.
In this post, you will find 27 Formative Assessment Tools for Your Classroom!
Let’s make sure we are all on the same page when it comes to formative assessment, or what I like to refer to as, “Assessment FOR Learning,” as a follower of Rick Stiggins‘ work over the years.
“Teachers who use, “Assessment FOR learning,” involve their students in ongoing self-assessment in ways that reveal to those learners (a) where they are headed in their learning, (b) where they are now in relation to those expectations, and (c) how each student can close the gap between the two.” – Rick Stiggins
Formative assessment is such an essential part of the learning process and student success, and many digital tools can help support this process.
This list has a wide variety of features and options to help you solidify your formative assessment strategies! Many of the tools below are great for both formative and summative assessments.

Carolina Ramirez has been teaching for 15 years. She is a World Language Certified Teacher K-12.
She has an M.Ed. in Technology. Carolina is originally from Peru and a native Spanish speaker.
Last year, she launched her YouTube Channel to support educators in Latin America.
In this episode, Kasey and Carolina discuss a number of ways for teachers of World Languages and English Language Learners to effectively use several of the Google Applications.
Using #GoogleEdu Tools in the World Languages Classroom – SULS0114

Quick Tip of the Week (Add Emoji to Google Drive)Did you know you can add emoji to files and folders in Google Drive? It’s super fun and adds visual organization.

Using Google Tools in the World Languages ClassroomSlides for World LanguagesIt’s not just a presentation tool any longer. However, when you need students to show what they have learned, Carolina explains how Slides can be a collaborative class presentation.
When each student is working in a different tool or app it can be difficult to monitor their progress and provide effective feedback.
Slides will allow a teacher to designate a slide for each student to complete their work and gives the teacher a grid view to keep track of each person.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "shauplea-20";amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual";amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart";amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon";amzn_assoc_region = "US";amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links";amzn_assoc_asins = "1946444693";amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit";amzn_assoc_linkid = "3567fefd26ae685b347909c6cb09d453";
Carolina explains how she assigns a Spanish-speaking country to each student. The student starts by inserting an image of a map then they choose important pieces of information to highlight in hyperlinks throughout the map.
Another great way to use Slides is with the drag and drop format. This can be especially useful when teaching students vocabulary. Carolina shares how she uses images such as specific rooms in a house, towns, and clothing that students label.
Related: How to Create Drag and Drop Activities with Google Slides
Slides can also help with student fluency when adding tools such as Mote. They also make for great storytelling projects as well.

Forms for Assessment and FunGoogle Forms is one of the easiest ways to collect learning data, whether that is in a world languages classroom or other disciplines.
Simple formative assessments can be used in real-time to help students master specific concepts.
Take advantage of the section breaks and allow students an opportunity to watch a video to review the material then try again.
This can be created using the “Go to section based on answer” function when setting up the Google Form.
(Learn how to use this feature in this post: How to Differentiate Questions in Google Forms.)
Another fun way to engage students in the material for a world languages class is through a digital breakout.
Related: BreakoutEDU: More Than a Time-Filling Game
Students are given a Google Form with specific codes or answers that they must determine in order to complete the Form.
Carolina tells how she uses a digital breakout to teach students about the Day of the Dead.
amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "shauplea-20";amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual";amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart";amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon";amzn_assoc_region = "US";amzn_assoc_design = "enhanced_links";amzn_assoc_asins = "1735601829";amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit";amzn_assoc_linkid = "45e28ed74bb20171862e30ab5be2b0c3";
One of the ways you can find Carolina is through her YouTube channel. She also uses YouTube in her classroom for helping students review material.
As a way to study for exams, Carolina assigns each student a different topic to cover in their own recorded video.
She then creates a playlist from the videos for all students to study.
Using YouTube playlists can be a great way for students to gain knowledge without the distractions of searching.
Whether those lists are student-curated and recorded, or teacher-created playlists.
Related: How to Infuse Google Classroom with the Power of YouTube
ExtrasTo wrap up the episode Carolina shares an extension and add-on that she has found to be extremely useful.
The Chrome extension EasyShare is a quick way to share a specific link through email. When you’re searching and discover the perfect website or article this extension can help you quickly share a link with students, parents, or a colleague.
For World Language teachers, the EasyAccent add-on can be very helpful when typing. There isn’t an easy way to add an accent when typing in Google Docs, so this add-on is a must-have.
As a final note, Carolina shares the Google Art Project titled Street Art. Students can explore different cities and the street art that adds beauty to them.
