Xu Xu Fang Video Premieres On BlackBook / Debut Album 'Daylong Secret' Feat. Michael Shuman

Xu Xu Fang’s debut album ‘Daylong Secret’ released March 4th via The Sound Ranch

Produced & written by Bobby Tamkin
Featuring Michael Shuman (QOTSA) Watch the video for 'I Crave' on BlackBook Photo: Piper Ferguson Mar Vista, California’s Xu Xu Fang are a dark-and-brooding, slow-and-rolling musical experience.... The band’s previous EPs and singles have garnered a ton of attention, and they are now set to release their debut full-length album, ‘Daylong Secret’, on March 4th via The Sound Ranch. Michael Shuman (Queens of the Stone Age) joined the band in the studio, recording bass and duet lead vocals on several new songs, and producer/mixer, Alain Johannes (QOTSA, Arctic Monkeys) contributed mixes, along with Dave Trumfio (Sia, Wilco). ‘Daylong Secret’ is produced by the band’s songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Bobby Tamkin. The first single/video from the album, Noir State Beach, originally premiered on RollingStone.com, who described the song as, “…so moody and emotional that it almost demands a visual accompaniment.”The video stars actor Luke Grimes (American Sniper/50 Shades of Grey) and is directed by long time Spike Jonze collaborator Casey Storm. In heavy rotation on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic, the song is featured in the Season 2 Premiere of The CW’s The Originals, and is included in Entertainment Weekly’s TV Jukebox: The Week’s Best Music-On-TV Moments.  The song 'Your Way', named Today’s Top Tune on KCRW, and licensed to TV show Gossip Girl, is featured in an episode of A&E’s Bates Motel, while Kompakt Records released a 12” vinyl of Noir State Beach remixes. The band’s next single and video (directed by Ladytron member Reuben Wu), 'Friend to the Unknown', premiered on Noisey. Hailed as “local innovators,” by the Los Angeles Times, Xu Xu Fang’s 12” debut single, 'These Days', received initial praise in MOJO (Bobby Tamkin enjoyed similar overseas success as a member of The Warlocks), and TV show Gossip Girl again licensed multiple songs from the band’s follow-up EP, 'The Mourning Son'. Xu Xu Fang’s version of The Cure’s 'Fascination Street', recorded for a tribute record to The Cure, became a mainstay on Jonesy’s Jukebox, and their cover of David Bowie’s 'China Girl', recorded for a Bowie tribute record, was singled out by MOJO who wrote, “Xu Xu Fang’s baked trip hop China Girl beats the recognized talent.”  Their next EP, 'Seven Days Now', reached #1 on Amazon’s Trip Hop album chart, and also received fantastic press attention.

“Enormous, dark, psychedelic, and beautiful, Xu Xu Fang is full of meditative moods that haunt the diaphanous triangle formed by Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Sigur Ros.” The Onion “Stunningly beautiful moments amidst the chaotic buildup of spiraling distorted guitars.” Consequence Of Sound “Xu Xu Fang is not satisfied with playing straightforward, albeit fantastic, music. It’s not hard to tell there is something truly great brewing throughout. Even in its brevity, the effort is just as poignant and as powerful as most full-lengths. That is what makes Xu Xu Fang both so much fun to listen to and just so damn good.” PopMatters “Xu Xu Fang take ‘Fascination Street’ on a trip through Massive Attack's Mezzanine, with static crackle, flutes, and a portentous tom beat inverting the sentiment from wide-eyed wonder to heavy-lidded menace.” Pitchfork“A deep psychedelic meditation, a beautiful recording." LA Weekly

Telegram Announce Debut LP Out March 18 + Release "Taffy Come Home" Video

Telegram Announce Debut Album
Operator  Out March 18

Release “ Taffy Come Home ” Video

SXSW 2016 Bound + NYC Show

“Part glam, part punk, part reckless romantics.” – NME

★★★★ - A dynamic, characterful Brit-rock band, with a Swansea accent and a love for Brian Eno’s mid-‘70s glam-pop material.” – Q Magazine

Recorded on a red lighthouse boat, moored at Trinity Bouy Wharf in East India Quays, the eagerly awaited debut from London four-piece Telegram is set for release March 18via Red Eye. Operator is a series of frenzied meditations on Time and Speed, steeped in the sensitivity and strangeness of Kurt Vonnegut and approached through the erstwhile themes of love and intoxication. Melding post industrialist kraut rock with garage rock and the best bits of Eno and Bolan, the album offers twelve luminescent tracks, rooted in solid grooves but anti-gravitational in your mind’s eye.

Lead single “ Taffy Come Home ” is the album’s totemic standout. The video accompaniment for the track, which premiered on  BrooklynVegan , was produced byDouglas Hart (an original member of The Jesus & Mary Chain) and is featured on Q Magazine. The track is the biggest pop song on the record, it is also – quixotically – the most personal, and the best demonstration of lead singer Matt Saunders’ supremely lyrical style. His lyrics share their despair, as well as their radical optimism and their pugnacious approach to the world’s harshness. For ears that have come across Telegram and stayed attuned, singles “Follow” and “Aeons” astound a second time, licked in a fresh coat of blinding enamel, alongside live favorites “Folly” and “Regatta”. Rerecorded, they’ve been elevated through work on the minute details.

Formed almost spontaneously in 2013, Matt Saunders (vocals, guitar), Oli Paget-Moon(bass) and Matt Wood (lead guitar) were repeatedly drifting together in kitchens, living rooms and makeshift studios. With whichever party it was reaching a certain depth and pressure, they decided to cut against the drift and commit their shared time to history in musical form. Wunderkind drummer Jordan Cook was recruited and, with a blistering run of shows, the band became extraordinarily tight. Moreover, they were made sensitive to the subtleties and extravagances of good performance. Once the album was recorded, Pip Stakem took over lead guitar and the band is now set to embark on a string of UK dates. Telegram will then be bringing their dynamic live show to Austin for SXSW 2016 as well as New York City on March 24 at Pianos to celebrate the release of the album.

Tracklisting:
1. Rule Number One
2. Follow
3. Inside/Outside
4. Godiva’s Here
5. Aeons
6. Under The Night Time
7. Taffy Come Home
8. Telegramme
9. Regatta

Darius James House Fire

Terrible news has come in over the transom-- friend of the press Darius James, author of the classic books Negrophobia and Blaxploitation: Roots of the Baadasssss 'Tude, has suffered a devastating house fire. Darius's living situation has been destroyed. He and his sister are now in a precarious state that borders on near homelessness.

A GoFundMe has been set up to try and cover the costs (which are substantial) of a refurbishment to keep Darius from ruin. Donate here.

Darius is a wonderful writer and needs the help. You can read a little bit of background here, in an interview he did with BOMB just before the launch ofNegrophobia. Let's try and avoid the very American tendency of letting our artists die in the street.

The Kansas City Star, in a live review, said “not much emerges from the music world these days that feels genuinely unique, but Puscifer’s Money Shot tour qualifies. Each component of the show was first-rate: the sound mix, the videos, the musical performance and the theatrics. It all added up to a show that was as memorable as it was unique.” Money $hot – Round 2 launches on March 17 in Riverside, Calif. at the Fox Performing Arts Center, with the band crisscrossing the country for another six weeks before heading overseas.

Money $hot was released on Oct. 30 via Keenan’s Puscifer Entertainment. The album landed at #1 on Billboard’s Independent Music chart, #2 on the Alternative Albums chart and #30 on the Top 200. In a four star review, Revolver Magazine described the album as “a meditative and hypnotic – not to mention wholly engaging – offering” and both Crave and Kerrang placed the release on their year end, best of lists, with Crave saying, “The yin and yang of masculine and feminine energy interweave a pulsing eroticism that curls itself around the mind like one of Keenan’s many grapevines.”

For Immediate Release -- Grrrls on Film is a weekend-long celebration of the feminist acts of making sound and vision. The festival and forum at Loyola Marymount University gathers together pioneers in movies, music, art and activism to address what has become one of the hot-button social justice issues of our time: lack of diverse representation and expression in arts and entertainment. The event borrows its name from the Riot Grrrl movement of the 1990s, which fused the Do-It-Yourself credo of punk with Third Wave Feminism’s call for self-determination.
Through screenings, panel discussions, music and workshops, Grrrls on Film offers a multi-decade tour of what the Riot Grrrls called Girl Power. The event features movies made by female directors and movies about noisemakers. All of the represented filmmakers and many musicians and scholars will present and discuss these seminal works; confirmed participants include Penelope Spheeris (The Decline of Western Civilization, Wayne’s World), Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways), Karyn Kusama (Girlfight), Alice Bag (the Bags), Kim and the Created, Nao Bustamante, Phranc, Allison Wolfe (Bratmobile), Colleen Green, Kari Krome, Peach Kelli Pop, Nicole Panter, Raquel Gutiérrez, Jill Reiter (In Search of Margo-go) and Lizzie Borden (Born in Flames).

Grrrls on Film, taking place March 18, 19 and 20, 2016, is a collaboration among faculty of Loyola Marymount University’s Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, the School of Film and Television and the College of Communication and Fine Arts at Loyola Marymount University. The campus radio station, KXLU, will present an outdoor concert with organizations that promote and support women in film, music, publishing, the arts, and academia on hand to provide information and present workshops. The goal is not merely to address the gender inequity of the film and music industries, but to inspire students to express themselves.

“When I was a girl coming into womanhood, punk rock saved my life,” says McDonnell, Assistant Professor of Journalism and New Media and author of four books, includingQueens of Noise: The Real Story of the Runaways. “Sharon and I bonded over our love of screaming females, and we hope the transformational tales presented in these films inspire a new generation to create works that speak for and to their lives.”

“The ethos of DIY and punk shaped my own ethics, concepts of social justice, and ultimately my career path. I want to reinforce that film can be a powerful mode of expression beyond the traditional Hollywood model to our students and community,” says Mooney, filmmaker and Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Film & Television.

GRRRLs on Film is free and open to the public.

Second track from Brown Acid compilation series of long lost 60s-70s proto-metal/stoner rock singles streaming todayCurated by L.A.'s Permanent Records & RidingEasy Records

Hear & share Crossfield "Take It" track: Soundcloud

The celebrated compilation series of long-lost vintage 60s-70s proto-stoner-psych singles, Brown Acidreturns for a second edition this spring. Curated in partnership by L.A. retailer Permanent Recordsand RidingEasy Records,  Brown Acid: The Second Trip  will be released (fittingly) on April 20th. A new track, Crossfield's "Take It" is available to hear and share today via  Soundcloud HERE.
Consequence of Sound recently premiered the first track, Ash's "Midnight Witch"  HERE . (DirectSoundcloud HERE.) Please see complete track listing below. Watch a rare clip of Ash performing "Midnight Witch" on Australian TV HERE
Some of the best thrills of the Internet music revolution is the ability to find extremely rare music with great ease. But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century -- particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins - often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector's prices. Legendary compilations like NuggetsPebbles, ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on  Brown Acid: The Second Trip
Lance Barresi, co-owner of L.A./Chicago retailer Permanent Records has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the 60s and 70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that's hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.
"I essentially go through hell and high water just to find these records," Barresi says. "Once I find a record worthy of tracking, I begin the (sometimes) extremely arduous process of contacting the band members and encouraging them to take part. Daniel and I agree that licensing all the tracks we're using for Brown Acid is best for everyone involved," rather than simply bootlegging the tracks. When all of the bands and labels haven't existed for 30-40 years or more, tracking down the creators gives all of these tunes a real second chance at success.
"There's a long list of songs that we'd love to include," Barresi says. "But we just can't track the bands down. I like the idea that Brown Acid is getting so much attention, so people might reach out to us."
One song on The Second Trip actually never even saw light of day, until now. "Bell Park Loon" bySpiny Norman - sounding like Jethro Tull on more acid and heavier cider - languished in a collector's archives, unreleased for 38 years until Barresi and Hall arranged to license some of the collector's goldmine.
Brown Acid: The Second Trip opens with the squealing guitar harmonies and Sabbath plod of Ash's "Midnight Wish." Sweet Crystal's "Warlords" is a fuzzy and fierce Deep Purple/Arthur Browninspired organ-led anthem. Raving Maniac's 'Rock and Roll Man" is a tight and brash glam-meets-metal tune proving the true potential of a genre later squandered on Sunset Strip poodleheads. "Silence of the Morning" by Glass Sun serves grungy psych while the Volt Rush Band merges MC5frantic energy with razor-sharp guitar leads. And, Iron Knowledge's aptly titled "Show Stopper" features a breakbeat and incredibly infectious detuned bass warble motif that DJs would kill for - had anyone been able to find the tune back in the day. Throughout, The Second Trip is yet another wall-to-wall set of blazing tracks that feels like you've uncovered a holy grail. And, in a way, you have. Brown Acid: The Second Trip will be available everywhere on LP, CD and download on April 20th, 2016 via RidingEasy Records. Pre-orders are available for digital (with immediate download of first single) at iTunes and Bandcamp, physical pre-orders at RidingEasy Records
