26th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert Rocks Carnegie Hall Last Night
Special David Bowie Tribute by Iggy Pop
Plus FKA twigs, Gogol Bordello, Sharon Jones, Basia Bulat, Philip Glass & More!
(Finale, Photo Credit: Theo Wargo/Getty Images) (New York, NY - February 23, 2016) - Last night's 26th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City made for yet another unforgettable evening in the concert's long history. A diverse and dynamic lineup, including Iggy Pop, FKA twigs, Sharon Jones, Basia Bulat, Dechen Shak-Dagsay with Helge van Dyk, Foday Musa Suso and Lavinia Meijer, brought the audience on a journey from meditative string performances to a full frenetic rock show. The evening was all thanks to the esteemed composer Philip Glass, who served as curator and artistic director for the evening.Lavinia Meijer, Foday Musa Suso and Philip Glass mesmerized the audience with a gripping four-song series, which left the entire room silent until erupting into applause after Meijer closed out her solo "Metamorphis #2," which explored the full range of the harp. After the contemplative beginning, the energy was lifted with an explosive performance by Sharon Jones, which had the crowd nodding and clapping along in their seats with renditions of "She Ain't a Child No More" and "100 Days, 100 Nights," with the Patti Smith Band. Dechen Shak-Dagsay with Helge Van Dyk led on with a power performance of "Everest" and the mantra "Black Tara." FKA twigs stunned with a passionate rendition and "Hide" and "Good to Love" with her signature lyrical dance moves, creating a multi-sensory experience with the music. Gogol Bordello had the crowd dancing in their seats again, showing the full mastery of their instruments and gritty sound. The energetic set led into a melancholy performance by Iggy Pop, beginning with brooding spoken word performances of "I Talked to a Smart Guy" and "Mom and Dad are Gone," eliciting cheers from the crowd before closing the show with a full-on rock performance that had everyone up and rushing toward the stage. Iggy Pop closed out the night by paying tribute to the late David Bowie with a cover of "The Jean Genie," and introduced the final song of the night, "Tonight," by noting the lyricism and appropriateness of the deceptively simple lyric. Sharon Jones joined Pop for a duet of the song, before all of the concert performers joined them on stage to close out the memorable evening with the lyrics, "Everything will be alright, tonight."

Welsh singer’s stunning new solo track gets a David Lynch-inspired video

“The perfect song to sob yourself to sleep to,
because sometimes feeling sad feels really good.” –VICE’s Noisey
“With big, booming vocals, delicate strings and a carefully crafted fusion of soulful, gospel melodies and modern electronics, Betsy looks certain to raise eyebrows
and open ears throughout 2016.” –The 405
“Betsy has made quite an impression with her
absolutely devastating synth-and-strings-filled ballad ‘Fair.’” –Idolator

Welsh singer Betsy has released the music video for her heart-wrenching new solo track, “Fair.” The video draws inspiration from David Lynch’s “Wild At Heart” and premiered this morning with The FADER, watch now: https://youtu.be/JGMitPTUtZs. Betsy says: “I wrote and recorded ‘Fair’ in a state of complete despair during the final throes of a relationship. Writing it made me realise that it really was over. It’s about wanting to leave but not being strong enough to. In the video I wanted to reflect the feeling of suffocation and madness I felt at that moment. I’m a big fan of David Lynch, and I remembered the scene in ‘Wild At Heart’ where Lula's mother loses the plot and covers herself in lipstick. It spoke to me because that was the delirium I was feeling and pretty much the way I was looking, hunched over my keyboard, bar the lipstick.”
“Fair” is available everywhere now, including iTunes and Spotify. Details of Betsy’s “Fair” EP, set to be released this spring, will be revealed in the coming weeks.
***ABOUT BETSY:
“Fair” is an introduction which immediately begs the question ‘where did that voice come from?’ - though few would predict the answer actually lies on a goose farm in rural Wales, where Betsy was born and raised. From campfire singalongs and her parents’ 70s record collection to the inspiration of towering local hero Shirley Bassey, Betsy was surrounded by music. But she knew no-one in the industry and so – encouraged by her hard-working family to find a fall-back – moved to London to study fashion design at Central St Martins. One distraction led to another when she was invited to design catwalk for the esteemed Balenciaga in Paris, an intense and exhilarating experience filled with unusual characters, some of whom turn up in her lyrics. And as music continued to call to her, Betsy returned to Wales, quitting what many of her peers deemed the job of a lifetime in favour of pursuing her own.
After decamping to a grotty caravan in her brother’s garden (also pictured in the first press shot), Betsy discovered Garageband. Then, there was no stopping her – she furiously set about making music, essentially tasking herself with writing her way out of the caravan. Among the early results is ‘Fair,’ an unflinchingly raw confession to feeling suffocated in a failing relationship, musically as inspired by the lush atmospherics of Massive Attack as the tender yet powerhouse vocals of Billie Holiday. Across an EP written and co-produced by Betsy, this fusion of soulful, gospel melodies and modern electronics is further explored: ‘Time’ is an infectious but infuriated ode to an addictive relationship with a new love, whilst the sparse blues of ‘Rosie’ is more vulnerable still, penned in tribute to a family friend who died in a car crash at the age of eighteen.
First glimpsed in the “trashy-opulence,” David Lynch-inspired imagery to 'Fair,' some may have already heard Betsy’s distinctive tone alongside Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, who reworked her early solo demo of ‘Endless Love’ into the pair’s acclaimed collaborative single from his last EP. From a goose farm via Paris (and back again), an unconventional path has nonetheless landed Betsy precisely where she needs to be - a force-of-nature voice for 2016, whose time has come.

BANSHEE OUT NOW!
WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "THAT'S WHY" HEREThe Cave Singers have shared the new music video for their single "That's Why." The video, directed by Sam Gordon, features the band strolling through the dark woods of Washington state, being followed by haunting figures in animal masks. Check out the video here!
The band has also announced a string of East Coast dates which can be found below. Banshee brings The Cave Singers back to their original 3 piece of vocalist / songwriter Pete Quirk, guitarist Derek Fudesco and drummer Marty Lund. The album was recorded live in July of 2015 over 6 days with producer Randall Dunn who also produced 2011's No Witch. The record is warmly anchored in the members' creative familiarity with one another. Yet there is a new thirst toBanshee, one that can be attributed to the combination of the band taking a year off to work on other projects, Pete Quirk's solo album and the Kodiak Deathbeds debut record, and their return to songwriting from distanced correspondence. While their first few albums were released through Matador Records and JagJaguar, Cave Singers took to IndieGoGo and successfully crowdfunded their new record stating, "After four records, on two different record labels, we want to try something totally different and new. We are forgoing the traditional record label, distribution, marketing of our past and along with your support, we are going to record, release, and most importantly, own our music for the very first time."
The Cave Singers will also be hitting the road this spring kicking off with a record release party tomorrow in Seattle at Neumos. Full tour schedule available below.

The performance of the acclaimed new single, "Memory" is slated for tomorrow, February 23rd, on CBS' Late Show with Stephen Colbert (check local listings). "Memory" is shaping up as another Violent Femmes favorite, charting on the back of widespread airplay on college radio and multi-format alternative outlets nationwide. "Memory" premiered last month exclusively via
NPR Music
, noting the track "feels like a classic...'Memory' has the playful quirkiness, infectious beats and jittery observations of the band's earliest work, from the 1980s. But teen angst is replaced with middle-aged irritation." Violent Femmes will spend March on an epic tour across Australia and New Zealand, highlighted by a co-headline trek alongside Hoodoo Gurus, Sunnyboys, and Died Pretty as well as top billed sets at such festivals as Adelaide, AU's WOMADedlaide (March 11th) and Meredith, AU's Golden Plains (March 13th). As if that weren't enough, Violent Femmes has just been announced among the star-studded line-up for Radio 104.5's 9th Birthday Show at Camden, NJ's BB&T Pavilion, slated for June 17th. Additional US festival dates will be announced soon. Violent Femmes' ninth studio album and first full-length collection in more than 15 years, WE CAN DO ANYTHING is among the most provocative and playful in the band's remarkable canon. As the title makes plain, founding Femmes Gordon Gano (guitar, lead vocals) and Brian Ritchie (acoustic bass guitar, vocals) remain intrepid as ever before, traversing infinite genre and emotion via their immediately identifiable mash of rambunctious folk, minimalist punk, cubist blues, cosmic jazz, and back porch rock 'n' roll. Violent Femmes came together in 1981 and were quickly applauded as one of the most inventive and original bands of the era, constantly pushing forward with their singular blend of folk and punk, sarcasm and spirituality. The Milwaukee-based band first attracted attention while busking in front of their hometown's Oriental Theatre. The performance caught the ears of that night's headliners, Pretenders Chrissie Hynde and the late James Honeyman-Scott, who invited the young group to open the sold out concert with a brief acoustic set. From there Violent Femmes released eight studio albums and more than a dozen iconic singles, among them such classics as "American Music," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Nightmares, "Add It Up," and of course, "Blister In The Sun." Violent Femmes' remarkable three-decade-plus career has earned them cumulative worldwide sales in excess of 10 million, with 1983's VIOLENT FEMMES awarded with RIAA platinum certification eight years after its initial release. The turn of the millennium saw Violent Femmes begin a long hiatus from the studio, only coming together to record a 2009 cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" - returning the favor after Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse's psychedelic soul version of "Gone Daddy Gone" proved a worldwide smash. Violent Femmes officially returned to full time action in 2013 with an acclaimed performance at Coachella before embarking on a wide-ranging tour that included headline dates and ecstatically received festival sets around the world. Violent Femmes captured their fresh momentum on the 2015 EP, HAPPY NEW YEAR. Recorded in Hobart between sold out shows at the world famous Sydney Opera House and Tasmania's Museum of Old and New Art, the EP was cut live in the studio - no baffling, no isolation booth, "the right production approach for the music that we make," says Ritchie. WE CAN DO ANYTHING was recorded last year as Violent Femmes traveled North America on a hugely successful tour alongside Barenaked Ladies. At seven weeks, the "Last Summer On Earth 2015 Tour" was the longest live trek for the Femmes in over a decade and its effect was to sharpen the already integrated unit even further. The trek saw Gano and Ritchie fronting a seven piece combo featuring versatile drummer Brian Viglione (Dresden Dolls, Nine Inch Nails) as well as the one and only Horns of Dilemma, Violent Femmes' ever-evolving cabal of multi-instrumentalist backing musicians. Veteran Horn of Dilemma Jeff Hamilton took on the producer role, overseeing the recording by virtue of expertise, expediency, and his long creative relationship with Violent Femmes. Initial tracks were recorded in Brooklyn followed by a few additional stops at studios across the country. The Nashville sessions saw Violent Femmes and the Horns of Dilemma blowing at full gale live in the studio, busting out explosive arrangements that veer on a dime from hard charging stomp to intimate melancholy. The sessions showcase the indispensible contributions of such longtime Horns as percussionist John Sparrow and saxophonist Blaise Garza - a Horn of Dilemma since he was 14 years old. Additional fuel came from Barenaked Ladies' Kevin Hearn, who stepped off his own tour bus to lend accordion, guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals. Though it will come as no surprise to the band's legion of loyal supporters, WE CAN DO ANYTHING affirms Violent Femmes as a vital and contemporary musical force, its joyous sound and ageless energy suggesting the universe will be graced with more music before the passing of another decade. Working with an imaginative artist like Björk and director Andrew Huang was an amazing opportunity to push Autodesk technology beyond what was previously thought possible. This video is a behind-the-scenes look at how the team worked to create various pieces for the Black Lake exhibition and cinema room at MoMA, the "moving album cover” for “Family” and artwork for Vulnicura.“Black Lake” was originally commissioned by MoMA to debut as the centerpiece of Björk’s 2015 museum retrospective, and is taken from Björk’s Grammy-nominated eighth studio albumVulnicura.Vulnicura was released to widespread critical acclaim and has been named to Best of 2015 lists by Rolling Stone, NPR Music, Spin, Stereogum, Complex, Consequence of Sound and many more.Vulnicura was written, produced and recorded in collaboration with Venezuelan producer Arcaand British musician The Haxan Cloak. Of the album’s nine tracks, six are written by Björk with two co-written with Arca and one co-written with Spaces. Six songs are produced by Björk and Arca, one by Björk, Arca and The Haxan Cloak and two by Björk. All string arrangements are by Björk. The album was mixed by The Haxan Cloak and engineered by Chris Elms, with two songs mixed by The Haxan Cloak and Elms, and mastered by Mandy Parnell. Vulnicura is Björk’s first release since the 2011 album and multimedia project Biophilia.

+ TEENAGE CANCER TRUST SHOW

The video is a fast-paced collage of footage taken from B-Movie, the story of Mark Reeder’s life in 1980s West-Berlin. Damian Hale, the man responsible for the incredible visuals that make up New Order’s stage show, edited the video. “Singularity” features scenes of a city divided by the Wall, it shows a cultural inter-zone in which everything and anything seemed possible.
