This March, BBC Worldwide North America will release They Will Have To Kill Us First: Malian Music in Exile, a feature-length documentary which debuted at 2015's SXSW Film Festival. Directed by Johanna Schwartz and featuring an original score by Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), the film - hailed by Indiewire as a "gripping, powerful documentary" and "social journalism of the highest order" by The Austin Chronicle - will open at New York City's Village East Cinema on March 4 and Los Angeles' Laemmle Santa Monica Theater on April 1 and other markets. The film is timed to release in conjunction with Music Freedom Day celebrated around the globe on March 3 since 2007. With unique musical events and initiatives in more than 30 countries, the day commemorating freedom of expression and human rights continues to captivate millions.
The original motion picture soundtrack for the film, featuring some of Mali's most exciting artists, will be released by Knitting Factory Records on March 4, 2016. It will be available digitally via all online retailers and streaming service providers. The album stars many of the musicians who appear in the film, includingSonghoy Blues and Moussa Sidi, as well as other Saharan African musicians including Bombino,Vieux Farka and Ali Farka Touré. Assembled by Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), who also scored the film, the soundtrack underlines these extraordinary musicians' struggle against persecution. KFR and director Schwartz have shared a deleted scene from the film that highlights Nick Zinner's work with Songhoy Blues in the studio. The song they play is called "Nick," named after the producer himself.

Music is the beating heart of Malian culture, but when Islamic jihadists took control of northern Mali in 2012, they enforced one of the harshest interpretations of sharia law by banning all forms of music. Radio stations were destroyed, instruments burned, and Mali's musicians faced torture, even death. Overnight, the country's revered musicians were forced into hiding or exile, where most remain -- even now. But rather than laying down their instruments, these courageous artists fought back, standing up for their freedoms and using music as a weapon against the ongoing violence that has ravaged their homeland.
They Will Have To Kill Us First, director Schwartz's debut feature, follows the group Songhoy Blues and musicians Kharia Arby, Fadimata "Disco" Walet Oumar, and Moussa Sidi as they each deal with the unfathomable situation in different ways. Telling the story of the uprising of Tuareg separatists, revealing footage of the jihadists, and capturing life at refugee camps where both money and hope are scarce, Schwartz and her indefatigable, mainly female, crew chart the perilous journeys to war-ravaged cities, as some of Mali's most talented musicians set up and perform at the first public concert in Timbuktu since the music ban.
Co-written by Schwartz and Andy Morgan, renowned journalist and former manager of Grammy® Award winning band Tinariwen, They Will Have To Kill Us First is produced by Sarah Mosses of Together Films and executive produced by Andre Singer (The Act of Killing) alongside Stephen Hendel, Victoria Steventon, OKAY Africa and Knitting Factory Entertainment.

VOGUE Exclusively Premieres Highasakite's Stunning New Video!

Exclusive! Highasakite Premieres New Video for “Someone Who’ll Get It”by JACOB BROWN

Photo: Stian AndersenWhen we first heard the enchanting voice of Highasakite singer Ingrid Helene Håvik at South by Southwest, we fell hard and fast for the Norwegian band. A few months later, we doubled down on our affection and invited the group to record a live session video.

But that was two years ago, when Highasakite was riding high and claiming the record for longest consecutive run (94 weeks) on Norway’s Top 40 charts. Now they’re back with a new album at the ready; a huge summer festival tour in the works; and a first single, “Someone Who’ll Get It,” which is already earning attention back home, on Spotify’s Global Viral chart, and on several U.K. radio stations...

Click HERE or the screen shot below to watch the video NOW and read what Ingrid had to tell Vogue about learning to pole dance and drowning in oil for the clip!

The band’s forthcoming sophomore album  Camp Echo  is slated for release on May 20 via Propeller Recordings; available to pre-order now - highasakite.lnk.to/CampEcho. Full track list and artwork available below…

The new video hints to the somewhat menacing premise of new album Camp Echo – a namesake taken from one of seven detention camps within Guantanamo Bay. It’s entrenched in historical discourse, but for Håvik, Camp Echo is more a state of mind. Despite loose political commentary, the album is without agenda. “It’s not a political album in the sense that I want people to side with specific party or mindset, but it has been central in my life,” she says.

The songs took shape over the 18 months leading to 2016, serving an internal memoir of the outward events that so dramatically shaped Håvik’s worldview. It’s a long time in the making, stemming back to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Fittingly enough, Camp Echo opens with ‘My Name Is Liar’– an effacing ‘tribute’ to George W. Bush, citing moments of his infamous War On Terror speech. The narrative continues with scattered citations of ex-marine Grant Collins, who served in Iraq from August 2004 – May 2005.

Though existing within the public sphere, Camp Echo is ingrained in the human condition; with Håvik having explored the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on war veterans and, on a more personal level, her own battle with social displacement and hopelessness.

It follows Highasakite’s acclaimed debut LP Silent Treatment – an effort applauded on both sides of the Atlantic and now claiming the record for longest consecutive run in Norwegian chart history, having spent 94 weeks in the Top 40. Championed by the likes of PitchforkNME and The GuardianSilent Treatment has achieved international acclaim since its release in February 2014; awarded 2xNorwegian Grammys, an IMPALA Nomination (European Independent Album of the Year), a Triple J Hottest 100 (AUS) placing with single Since Last Wednesday and Album/Single of the Year listings on NPR (US).

After a sold out show at London’s Hoxton Hall last week, Highasakite embark Village Underground onMay 24, alongside a string of headline performances in DublinManchester and Amsterdam – tickets on sale now.  In addition, earlier this month Highasakite announced that they would be main stage headliners for several Norwegian festivals including ØyaParkenfestivalenPstereo andBergenfest. (February 18, 2016)- It was in the summer of 2012 that School of Seven Bells’ fourth and final album,  SVIIB , was written. “I can easily say that it was one of the most creative and inspired summers of our lives,” Alejandra Deheza recounts. “What followed was the most tragic, soul shaking tidal wave that life could ever deliver, but even that wouldn’t stop the vision for this record being realized.”  SVIIB  will be released everywhere on February 26, but today fans can stream the record in its entirety via NPR’s First Listen: http://smarturl.it/SVIIBnpr
It was in early 2013 that Benjamin Curtis was diagnosed with a rare form of T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma, less than a year later Deheza would be the sole member of the group. Benjamin Curtis passed away on December 29, 2013.
In 2014 Deheza moved to Los Angeles to finish the record with Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Nine Inch Nails, M83), As soon as Alley was settled in LA it took the two only a month and a half to finish the record. “ This is a love letter from start to finish. It's the story of us starting from that first day we met in 2004, and that's the story of School of Seven Bells,” Alley says, “When I see those roman numerals, I just think of an era”.Alejandra recently chatted with NPR Weekend Edition host Scott Simon about the making of SVIIB. In case you missed it, listen to the interview here.
SVIIB  will be released on February 26, 2016 via Vagrant Records in the US, and Full Time Hobby in Europe, but today fans can pre-order the album on iTunes.

J DILLA'S LONG LOST 2002 ALBUM THE DIARY TO BE RELEASED IN APRIL

J DILLA'S LONG LOST 2002 VOCAL ALBUM THE DIARY TO BE RELEASED APRIL 15 BY PAYJAY/MASS APPEAL RECORDS LISTEN TO NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD TRACK "THE INTRODUCTION" AND READ INTERVIEW WITH J DILLA ESTATE CREATIVE DIRECTOR EOTHEN ALAPATT HERE:http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/hear-the-lead-track-from-j-dillas-lost-vocal-album-the-diary-20160218
PREORDER THE DIARY EXCLUSIVELY ON ITUNES: http://found.ee/JDillaTheDiary  The Estate of James Yancey has revived J Dilla's longstanding company PayJay as a functioning imprint to release Dilla's long lost vocal album,  The Diary  on April 15th, in conjunction with Mass Appeal Records. Initially intended for release in 2002The Diary is the final batch of unissued material that Dilla had assembled for release during his lifetime, lending crucial insight into the producer's prowess and thought process in the period leading up to his break with the major label system and the extremely fertile period that followed (which encompassed the making of the canonical classics  Ruff Draft Jaylib , and  Donuts ). The Diary features vocal performances by J Dilla, Snoop DoggBilalKokaneFrank and DankNottz and Boogie, over production by Dilla, MadlibPete RockHi-tekNottzHouse ShoesSupa Dave WestBink! and Karriem Riggins. The album was announced today in an interview with Nas on Zane Lowe's show on Beats1 with the never-before-heard song "The Introduction," now streaming via  Rolling Stone The Diary was Dilla's attempt to take advantage of the attention afforded him after his brightest period as a behind-the-scenes hit-maker and influencer. However, the project stalled and the album was literally shelved, the reels languishing in storage in Detroit as a relocated Dilla began a creative renaissance in Los Angeles. The Diary in this, its final form, was painstakingly assembled over a ten year period from two-track mixdowns and multi-track masters found in J Dilla's archives after his death in 2006. The completion of The Diary was overseen by The Estate of James Yancey's Creative DirectorEothen Alapatt, long term general manager of Stones Throw Records and A&R for Donuts andJaylib, whose previous archival Dilla work includes the expanded Ruff Draft reissue from 2008. The Estate of James Yancey is overseen by California's Probate Court on behalf of Yancey's four heirs - his mother, Maureen "Madukes" Yancey, his brother John "Illa J" Yancey and his two daughters,Ja'Mya Yancey and Ty-monae Whitlow.
The musical landscape has shifted mightily in the wake of J Dilla's final album. Donuts' release and Dilla's subsequent death forced a critical and fan-level reexamination of his work and importance on the global stage. J Dilla was marginalized in the years leading up to his death, as he, battling the rare blood disorder that would eventually take his life, eschewed the major label-led music industry where he created or aided some of the music industry's brightest - D'AngeloErykah BaduCommon - in the late 90s and early 00s, moved to California from his native Detroit and dug deep into the deepest recesses of his creative spirit to offer a new take on hip hop's decades old art form of sampling. AfterDonuts, the likes of Kanye West and Pharrel Williams could be heard echoing words read on a fan's shirt from one of J Dilla's last European tours in 2005: J  Dilla Changed My Life . They were not the only ones: Justin Timberlake opines openly that the world needs more Dilla. J Dilla became a critical signpost for these stars, and others: the archetype figure that birthed everything they loved and cared for in hip-hop.

Lust For Youth shares music video for recent single "Sudden Ambitions"

LUST FOR YOUTH SHARES MUSIC VIDEO FOR "SUDDEN AMBITIONS"
WATCH IT AT  V MAGAZINE
COMPASSION LP OUT MARCH 18TH ON SACRED BONES RECORDS                                                                                                                 Lust For Youth's new album Compassion is due out next month on Sacred Bones Records.

The trio recently shared the single "Sudden Ambitions" from the record and have now completed a music video for the track working with their long-time collaborator and 'New Boys' video director, Frederik Valentin. Filmed hand-held style, the video depicts various scenic shots of the band's hometown neighborhood Amager, Copenhagen – a local swim team practice, Valentin's younger brother (modeling the latest Posh Isolation gear), and features cameos from the band members. Frederik also had this to say about the video:

"Everything was filmed in our local neighborhood, Amager, Copenhagen, it’s a quiet place, no fancy cafes or shops. Near the airport but far away from the world."

LFY will be heading out on the road next month with stops in LA, San Antonio, San Francisco, NYC, and Austin for SXSW before heading back to Europe for a string of dates. Find the album info and tour dates below!
"Movement and gesture is natural. The flâneur has an iPhone, and their heart is embroidered into a microfiber sleeve in gold."
Lust for Youth are a three-piece from Copenhagen made up of Hannes NorrvideMalthe Fischer & Loke Rahbek. 2014’s acclaimed album,  International , took the melancholic insomnia of their former releases out into the street and away from the domestic frustrations of a life in headphones. Suddenly, surrounded by bodies, and with a staccato heart, Balearic infatuations and capricious nights in crowded clubs set the mood for Norrvide’s pining sighs. International marked Lust For Youth’s new-found decadence with fully resolved charm and enhanced self-deprecation.

This was swiftly channeled into their recent hit, “Better Looking Brother.”  Compassion ’s first single was streamed over 50k times in its first month, capping off a highly successful 2015 of worldwide tours and critical social media updates.
Compassion  restates beauty for a time of crisis and clickbait. Judgement, design, form, and opinion: to what end will we refine our world if we can’t also make an anthem of our lives? This is the tender conspiracy: I’m on twitter; I have an anthem. Do we have an anthem? We have lust. Let’s meet irl.
Lust for Youth are affectionately vicious, and vulnerably sharp. They are the anticipation of the comedown as you come up on the best you’ve ever been of- fered from a bathroom stall. This is the spectrum: a low you know, and a dizzy new height.
Hearts blind lights and finance desire. Is it the fate of the cunning to look good, or is it just cunning to look this good? Compassion is dexterity: we all look this good. An impulse is an appetite, and you’re entitled to everything. Multitask collapse and revolution because you’re a beautiful mess.
Compassion is deliverance. Anticipate compassion."  —Patrick Quick

Skylar Gudasz: CoS Album Stream, Morning Edition, Tour & More

BIG STAR THIRD COLLECTIVE MEMBERSKYLAR GUDASZSTEPS OUT WITH ANTICIPATED DEBUT OLEANDER  CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND NOW STREAMING OLEANDER MOUNT MORIAH TOUR + PHUZZ PHEST & MORE MORNING EDITION SESSION THIS FRIDAY Durham, NC based Skylar Gudasz is thrilled for the upcoming release of her debut albumOleander, out this Friday February 19th. Consequence Of Sound is now streaming this enchanting work by a talented new singer-songwriter who they say "delivers an album of dramatic, honest, and often playful alt-country songs ... Cumulatively, the whole album is a spectacular introduction to a worthy, captivating new voice in Americana."
Listen here http://bit.ly/1TqK5rC    WUNC's Morning Edition caught up with Skylar and spoke about being a member of the Big Star Third Collective, recording with renowned Chapel Hill producer Chris Stamey and traveling the world before recording her debut LP. Listen to the session and interview this Friday at http://wunc.org/programs/morning-edition This past weekend Skylar performed alongside Debbi Peterson, Steve Wynn, Mike Mills and others at the famed Wild Honey Beach Boys Benefit concert in Los Angeles. Goldmine Magazine said Skylar's performance was a "transcendent moment" and she delivered a "magical, exceptionally sung Surf's Up ... wrapping [her] beautiful voice around the fragile, moving melody." Beginning on March 11th in Washington DC, Skylar will hit the road with Mount Moriah. The tour will visit New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Boston, before finishing up with an Oleander Record Release show in Carrboro, NC and a performance at this year's Phuzz Phest. Full tour dates and details below. Oleander was produced by Chris Stamey, who was drawn to Skylar's distinctiveness as a songwriter after seeing her perform alongside some of the most promising young musicians in Chapel Hill and Durham. Chris describes Skylar as "a triple threat - a skilled singer, composer, and lyricist - with a background in both classical and pop music." Shortly after his ambitious Big Star Third collective began playing, Chris brought Skylar aboard, introducing her to a cast that included Big Star drummer Jody Stephens, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills and the Posies' Ken Stringfellow. From Barcelona to Sydney to London, Skylar had the chance to perform alongside Jeff Tweedy, Cat Power and Ray Davies. Back home in North Carolina, Skylar began recording new material that would becomeOleander. An album full of tender songs that lean on minimal piano-and-vocal passages that ebb and flow between full-band crescendos, while others are full of grand orchestral swirls. The end result is the work of a singer-songwriter whose balance of musical talent and artistic vision comes along only once in a very blue moon.                                            Skylar plans to spend all of 2016 on the road. Additionally, fans can pre-order Man About Town today via iTunes, and receive instant downloads of album cuts “Cosmic Love,” and “Love Like That.” Pre-order here:http://smarturl.it/ManAboutTown
On Man About Town, Hawthorne is back to handling the lion’s share of production. He also played damn near every instrument on the album and penned every track. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times he’s vulnerable and sincere. It’s the shit people listen to when they wanna get drunk and stoned and sentimental. The reason? Mayer Hawthorne stays making that timeless, soulful, baby-making music.
In preparation for the new release, Mayer Hawthorne will be performing tomorrow, February 19, at Madison Square Gardensupporting Hall & Oates. More tour dates to be announced.
