The position of Downtown Boys has been clear since they started storming through basements and DIY spaces with their radically-minded, indefatigable rock music: they are here to topple the white-cis-het hegemony and draft a new history. This is how Downtown Boys began, and their resolve has only strengthened as both their sound and audience have grown. Like the socially conscious groups of years past, from Public Enemy to Rage Against the Machine, Downtown Boys harness powerful sloganeering, repetitive grooves, and earworm hooks to create one of the most necessary musical statements of today.

Liars Unveil Two New Tracks; New Album TFCF Out August 25

LIARS

UNVEIL TWO NEW TRACKS

NEW ALBUM  TFCF  OUT AUGUST 25

WORLD TOUR  BEGINS FRIDAY IN LONDONPhoto: Zen SekizawaLIARS unveil two new tracks, “Coins In My Caged Fist” and “The Grand Delusional,” ahead of the release of  TFCF  on August 25. Listen to the respective songs here and here.

Showing two facets of the brand new album,  TFCF  (which stands for Theme From Crying Fountain), “The Grand Delusional” opens with acoustic guitar (as Andrew has said, "There's acoustic guitar all over this record! How ridiculous is that?") while “Coins In My Caged Fist’” gallops along with drum machines and samples. “I wanted to do lots of sampling,” he says. “I’d done a little in the past, but I’d started to realize the possibilities of the process, of sampling myself playing ‘proper’ instruments, and then using the sampler to put it all together in an ‘artificial’ way.”

Surrounding TFCF’s release, Angus and a new touring band will embark on a world tour that begins this Friday in London. Full details below with more to be confirmed. Visit Liars’s website for exclusive ticket and album bundles.

Liars have, as a matter of course, sounded radically different with each album, pursuing new concepts and occupying diverse mindsets. On this, Liars’s eighth studio album, the bustling backdrops of Los Angeles, Berlin and New York have been replaced with a presence far more intimate and autobiographical as Liars once again boldly step out of their comfort zone into vastly new musical territory. Embark on The Path to Crying Fountain by listening to this specially-curated playlist from Mute. While navigating The Path, listeners will hear the sonic progression of Liars’s discography that has led to Crying Fountain.

Following an amicable parting of ways with Aaron Hemphill, Liars is now just Angus Andrew, who decamped to his native Australia - specifically to a remote part of the Australian bush - to create an album unlike any Liars had attempted before.

Cut off from the rest of the world in his remote home studio, with no other distractions, Angus gave free reign to artistic impulses he’d never explored and those included experimenting with the acoustic guitar and sampling.

The album’s reinvention of the Liars paradigm – blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic, between the experimental impulse and the addictive pop sensibility – is evidence that Angus’s creative energies remain as healthy as ever, even given the upheaval within the group.

TFCF was written and recorded by Liars (Angus Andrew). Butchy Fuego, who performed live with Liars following Julian Gross’s departure in 2014, plays drums on three tracks. TFCF was mixed by Gareth Jones and mastered by Christian Wright.

Trashcan Sinatras Announce Acoustic Tour

Trashcan SinatrasAnnounce All Night with the Trashcan Sinatras - 2017 U.S. Acoustic Tour

Frank ReaderPaul Livingston and John Douglas from the Trashcan Sinatras will be touring the U.S. as a three-piece acoustic lineup. The bandmates celebrate their 30th anniversary, having formed in Irvine, Scotland in 1987. "I've been in the band for thirty years now," says Livingston. "That's a long time to be in any relationship. It's a good time to take stock, see how far we've come, and think about where we're headed."  The All Night with The Trashcan Sinatras acoustic tour begins on Sept 27th in Vienna, VA and continues to New York CityCleveland, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Nashville and more. Tour dates below - more dates to come!
The shows will consist of two unique sets (excluding the NYC date) and fans can expect to hear some covers, too. Although the band often delves into its back catalog for obscurities, particularly during acoustic tours, many songs have never been played live. Others may never be played again. "We will be playing some songs live that we have never attempted before, so in some ways, it's a tightrope walk for us. But, these songs are what we have done with our lives, so I accept the challenge and will try to not look down," says Douglas.
Performing acoustically will transport many of those 100 songs back to their origins. "Most of our songs are written with acoustic guitars and voices in quiet, solitary rooms, so it will be nervy but exciting to bring that sound out of the backroom and into the light," says Douglas. According to Livingston, "touring with no rhythm section means you have to take your cues more from the vocal. You can bend time and create space for the emotion of the song to come through."
With six full-length albums to their credit, starting with debut Cake in 1990, through last year's Wild Pendulum, the band has written and released just north of 100 songs. Over the course of the tour, they plan to play each one of those songs. "Now that we've reached a century of songs," says Reader, "it feels like a good time to meet up with them all again, like a high school reunion." He adds, "Those songs whose love and friendship we've nourished over the years will no doubt turn up most nights and show us why we've remained so close over the years, but it'll be most interesting to see how those with whom we've lost touch have aged." He expects that some songs will "turn up drunk and disheveled," while others "may now be dashing and distinguished, more so than we all would have guessed. I can't wait to meet them all again and find out."
Watch the music video for "All Night" Listen to "Ain't That Something" and "Best Days On Earth
Thirty years on, this is a chance for the band to reflect on its past, take a look at the present and imagine where they might go next. Playing all of the songs they've written seems a good way of celebrating the journey so far. Come along early, join the band in celebration and see which songs the evening brings!

ExSage Share "Under Your Spell" via Consequence of Sound | New EP 'Total Devotion' Out September 22nd

EXSAGE SHARE "UNDER YOUR SPELL" TRACK
VIA CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND

NEW EP TOTAL DEVOTION OUT SEPTEMBER 22ND
Photo Cred: Kristin CoferLISTEN & SHARE: ExSage - "Under Your Spell""...Clover is slowly revving an engine of chugging bass, sparks of guitar dancing around the fuel that is her Alison Mosshart-does-pop vocals."
- Consequence of Sound

"With their lo-fi, leather jacket vibes, comparisons to bands like The Kills and The Raveonettes are inevitable, but the five-song EP injects those garage bones with engine oil-sludgy desert rock guitars, Clover's big, almost-pop vocals, and a touch of Nick Cave ominousness.
"
Noisey

"...their sticky sweet harmonies amidst a chunky, guitar driven sound stands out with an undeniable raw fervor."
Grimy Goods

"...comes at you like a desert-baked version of indie guitar-slingers like the Duke Spirit, the Kills...Or maybe X on a road trip in the wilderness beyond Joshua Tree.”
Buzzbands LA
LA-based, desert punk band ExSage share new single, "Under Your Spell," via Consequence Of Soundwho state, "Take that vexing desire and bake it under the desert sun, and you’ve got ExSage’s new single “Under Your Spell”." The track comes from the band's forthcoming EP, Total Devotion, out September 22nd. The EP was recorded in Los Angeles with engineer Jon Gilbert (The Kills, OFF!).

Total Devotion was sparked by a midnight drive through Los Angeles after Kate Clover (singer/guitarist) heard Suicide’s Ghost Rider on a left-of the-dial station. Clover returned home and feverishly wrote, she was a woman on a mission and that mission was to be ruthlessly true to herself no matter the cost. The EP’s juxtaposing sound is also inspired by, PJ Harvey, Let Love In era Nick Cave and Black Sabbath. Lyrically, the EP touches on French Surrealism - using Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud's poetic styles for reference. Lead single "Under Your Spell" is inspired by the late 70s punk band Suicide, and presents the blues against pulsing synths that takes a Sabbath like turn. Second single "Come Alive" is about coming into your own. It’s about, facing what your fear most in order to feel alive. The track features a psychedelic, stoner bass line and roaring synths. Third single "So Intertwined" is the slow burner on the EP, an invitation to look beyond the horizon. Total Devotion is the follow-up to the band's 2016 debut EP, Out of the Blue, produced by Alain Johannes (PJ Harvey, Queens Of The Stone Age).

Reinforcing her new spark, Clover played every instrument on the EP (except drums), which empowered her to be fearless. When it came time to assemble a live band Clover knew it had to be all female, an aspect she felt she had overlooked in the past as being the sole female member. A symbolic change, that marks a new era for the project with hopes of inspiring other females to pursue what they believe in. Their debut EP, Out of the Blue, was picked up by NoiseyAll Things Go and various LA tastemakers like LA WeeklyGrimy Goods and Buzzbands LA. TOUR DATES

 BIO

“A Tap of your finger on the drums releases all sounds and initiates the new harmony…"

This sentence from Rimbaud’s To a Reason hung from a wall in singer/guitarist Kate Clover’s Los Angeles studio apartment. She would read the words out loud every morning. It became her mantra. It symbolized her new beginning, her beacon towards finding her new way. Clover made a pact to be ruthlessly true to herself, however difficult or painful.  Which meant to no longer be part of a duo- she wanted her voice to be heard, but this time alone.

Angèle David-Guillou Announces Album & Releases 'Desert Stilts' (Village Green)

ANGÈLE DAVID-GUILLOU ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘EN MOUVEMENT' & RELEASES FIRST CUT ‘DESERT STILTS'INSPIRED BY PHILIP GLASS, ANDREI TARKOVSKY & SUMERIAN ART, IS OUT VIA VILLAGE GREEN RECORDINGS ON 13TH OCTOBER
‘Desert Stilts’ - https://soundcloud.com/villagegreenrecordings/angele-david-guillou-desert-stilts-1
'I started working on Desert Stilts as I was looking into odd metric changes and Baroque rhythms. At the same time I was reading a passage of Gurdjieff’s book Meetings With Remarkable Men, in which himself and a group of friends are crossing a desert. There is suddenly a terrible sand storm and the team of adventurers are stopped in their track. After a while they decide, as one does, to walk on stilts. High from the ground, the air is clear and windless and they can walk without any problem across the desert whilst the storm is raging below. I love this fable for its beautiful metaphoric meaning but also because it is totally absurd and told with great wit and humour. Peace is achieved through determination, light-heartedness and absurdity. I love this combination of the serious and the absurd and I wanted to translate that into music.’ Angèle David-Guillou on ‘Desert Stilts'

'David-Guillou’s widescreen arrangements incorporate a richly woven tapestry of saxophones, woodwinds, and strings’Self-Titled
London-based French composer Angèle David-Guillou makes audacious music that explores the interaction between rhythm and melody, structure and emotion, permanence and change. Her work is one of incessant dialogue between these elements, creating hypnotic compositions whose mutable internal architecture and shifting melodic accentuations immediately draw the listener in. It’s a compositional process that is central to the eight compelling essays on the aptly titled’ En Mouvement,’ David-Guillou’s new album, the second under her given name, but it’s an approach that was present even in her earlier singer-songwriting work as Klima, and with cult electronic art-rock band Piano Magic. Her signature writing style is characterised by asymmetric bar lengths, irregular verse constructions and zoetrope-like arrangements – an approach to music as implicitly indebted to the canon of innovative rock and pop, Philip Glass’s ‘Music With Changing Parts’ or early European Baroque music.
Born and raised in Tours in the Loire Valley, David-Guillou was classically educated in piano, singing, harmony and musical theory. She became obsessed with the work of German composer Carl Orff at a young age, and later enticed by the experimentation of Sonic Youth, taught herself guitar and joined her first rock band at 15.  Simultaneously, she developed a longstanding interest in the academic study of the social history of music, and worked on her PhD at the Sorbonne. From 2002 she began collaborating with the aforementioned London-based avant-rock group Piano Magic, singing and playing guitar, synths and other keyboards, co-writing a good deal of the band’s material and touring all over the world. In 2006 she moved to London and recorded her debut solo album, under the Klima moniker. Released the following year on West London’s Peacefrog imprint (home to José González, Little Dragon et al), the album was a critical success. She was soon at work on a second Klima album, ‘Serenades and Serinettes,’ released by Second language in 2010.
In 2008 David-Guillou had purchased a second-hand upright piano, her first piano since childhood, and somehow squeezed it into a room at the top of the stairs in her south London flat. Falling instantly in love with the instrument all over again, she began composing on it straight away. The resulting material would ultimately appear on the album ‘Kourouma’ (named after the Ivorian anti-war author Ahmadou Kourouma), released in 2013 by Village Green. This impressive collection of compositions, notably influenced by the succinct, synergistic dialogue between melodic and rhythmic elements developed in the music of Moondog, was lauded for its maturity and the melodic richness of its dozen essays for piano, electric piano, neo-Baroque chamber orchestration and voice.
Eager to explore her metier further and experiment in particular with the resonance of the piano as a compositional tool, in 2015 David-Guillou set out to purchase a grand piano. After many a pianistic encounter across the length and breadth of Britain, she eventually discovered an August Förster model built in the early 1980s, in what was then East Germany, and immediately knew it was the one. A sublime instrument, with an incredibly sensuous bass and rich harmonics, the piano would provide the foundation for a set of ambitious new compositions, later interleaved with David-Guillou’s intricate arrangements for saxophones, woodwind and strings, that would eventually make up the ‘En Mouvement’ album.
Informed by a rich and eclectic tapestry of cultural stimuli, including Philip Glass’s ‘Glassworks,’ the music for movement of Thomas De Hartmann and George Ivanovich Gurdjieff, Alvin Curran's compositions for the piano, French and Spanish Baroque music, the films of Andrei Tarkovsky and Jean Cocteau, Sufi writings, Sumerian art and contemporary dance, the pieces on ‘En Mouvement’ are the work of a reflective, intellectually engaged yet delightfully instinctive modern composer who has made the limitless mutability implied by the concept of ‘movement’ a thing of personal transformation and mesmeric musicality. “Very early on in the process of working on the compositions for this album, the idea of ‘movement’ became my central point of focus”, David-Guillou confirms. “The word seemed to encapsulate all my obsessions. En mouvement literally means ‘in motion’, but the word in French, as in English, is extremely rich and suggests an array of ideas such as motion, gesture, dance, musical parts, clockwork, repetition, displacement, emotional confusion or excitement. I hadn’t previously understood how important this concept was to me.”
With her second album of modern composition, Angèle David-Guillou’s career is palpably en movement, and, excitingly, it feels like the beginning of a long and thrillingly creative musical journey.

Garbage Shares Music Video for New Single "No Horses"

GARBAGE SHARES MUSIC VIDEO FORNEW SINGLE "NO HORSES"
NOW TOURING THE U.S. WITH BLONDIENEW AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL COFFEE TABLE BOOKTHIS IS THE NOISE THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE AVAILABLE NOW
Los Angeles, CA - August 2, 2017 Garbage today shared a music video for their new single "No Horses". Directed by Pancake Mountain creator Scott Stuckey, the politically charged clip can be seen HERE. "No Horses" was released last month and is available now HERE. All of the band's profits from sales and streaming of the single will be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross through the end of 2018."It's been my observation that when governments disregard their citizens for their own greed, the ensuing soundtrack usually kick's ass. Like Nina Simone's 'Mississippi Goddam' or the Clash's 'Straight To Hell', 'No Horses' made me realize that I'm not going insane, these really are fucked up times. The lyrics are powerful so the challenge was to add something visually that wouldn't ruin the individual's interpretation," offered director Scott Stuckey on the video's inspiration.Earlier this summer, Garbage released their autobiographical coffee table book, THIS IS THE NOISE THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE via Akashic Books. The book includes never before seen photographs of the band as well as pieces written by each of the four band members. THIS IS THE NOISE THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE can be purchased HERE

Support for additional Rage & Rapture tour dates will be provided by John Doe & Exene Cervenka followed by Deap Vally. Dead Heavens (Quicksand, Cults, White Zombie) Release Video for Away From The Speed Today, New Album Out Now

Dead Heavens Release Video for
 “Away From The Speed” Today

New Album Whatever Witch You Are Out Now

New York City’s Dead Heavens, the psych-rock project of guitarist and frontman Walter Schreifels (Vanishing Life, Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools, Quicksand, and more), Paul Kostabi (Youth Gone Mad, White Zombie, Psychotica), Drew Thomas (Youth of Today, Bold, Into Another), and Nathan Aguilar (Cults), have released the video for their song “Away From The Speed” today via Loudwire.  The song appears on their new album Whatever Witch You Are , out now via Dine Alone Records. Watch and share “Away From The Speed” here and purchase Whatever Witch You Are here.

Walter Schreifels says of the song, “There’s just not enough love in the world today. Like idiots, we traded what we had for cheap thrills, fast cars, and fine wine. As the Buddha says, ‘If a man can control his mind all wisdom and virtue will come to them’ but I just can’t keep away from the speed.”

Whatever Witch You Are, Dead Heavens first full-length, plays effortlessly as a new-classic blues rock album— a new-millennium Fresh Cream or Let it Bleed — only with sharp-angular sounds, noticeably psyche inflections, and melodies that seem wrought out of rebar: strong, pared down, and purposeful at every point. If anything, their musical origins have permitted Dead Heavens to approach blues and psyche rock unnostalgically, arriving at an audibly honest sound, stripped of any of the tassels or affectation. The drums hit heavy. The guitars hit heavy. Yet hovering above them both is always Schreifels’ sandier vocals, urging us on through life’s endless freakishness and frustrations.
