Yusuf / Cat Stevens' "Blackness Of The Night" Inhabits Doomed Child Soldiers, Broken Families & The Plight Of Refugees

Yusuf / Cat Stevens' "Blackness Of The Night" Inhabits Doomed Child Soldiers, Broken Families & The Plight Of RefugeesFrom 'The Laughing Apple' - Out September 15
Yusuf: "One of my first protest songs for the 60's"
August 4, 2017 – (London/New York, NY) – Yusuf / Cat Stevens has debuted "Blackness Of The Night," which will appear on his highly anticipated new album, The Laughing Apple, out September 15 under his Cat-O-Log Records label exclusively through Decca Records. "Blackness Of The Night" aches of lost innocence, as Yusuf alludes to doomed child soldiers, broken families, and waning hope atop elegiac organ and Yusuf's plaintive guitar. Says Yusuf to Entertainment Weekly: ""Blackness Of The Night" was one of my first protest songs for the 60's. Growing up in London after the War, the memories were strong and bombed ruins still riddled the City. "Blackness Of The Night" reflected the feeling of emptiness wandering the streets at night alone, pondering how to survive in a dark unknown future. It's got a lot of relativity to the situation of many refugee kids today, lost and abandoned, finding themselves separated from their families and homes in a hostile world."The song was originally recorded 50 years ago for Yusuf's 1967 album 'New Masters' but flourishes in a lush new arrangement shared exclusively with Entertainment Weekly. Listen here: http://bit.ly/2v0usRoThe Laughing Apple was announced last month with the premiere of "See What Love Did To Me," which Rolling Stone called "a charming update on the breezy, singalong-friendly sound that Yusuf / Cat Stevens helped to pioneer on classic albums such as Tea for the Tillerman" and Stereogum deemed "a lovely folk-pop sway." The new album follows the common '60s template of combining newly-written songs with a number of covers - except that all the covers are from Yusuf's 1967 catalogue. The Laughing Apple celebrates some of his earliest material, presenting the songs as he has always wished they had been recorded.Yusuf produced The Laughing Apple with Paul Samwell-Smith, the original producer behind Yusuf's landmark recordings, including 1970's Tea for the Tillerman, which contained the classics 'Wild World' and 'Father and Son'. That multi-platinum album became a benchmark of the singer-songwriter movement, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has named it one of the definitive albums of all time. The new album also marks the return of Yusuf's longtime musical foil, Alun Davies. Davies, whose graceful acoustic guitar is an essential component of Yusuf's classic sound.Yusuf's music has established him as a timeless voice for all generations. Classic songs like 'Wild World', 'Moonshadow', 'Peace Train', 'Morning Has Broken' and 'Oh Very Young,' which made him a radio staple during the '70s, are used regularly in films and television shows, with "'Father and Son' playing during a crucial scene in the blockbuster movie Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The music of Yusuf / Cat Stevens will be the subject of a PBS Soundstage special in September.

Widowspeak Reveal new single "When I Tried" Track off upcoming album "Expect The Best"

WIDOWSPEAK SHARENEW SINGLE, " WHEN I TRIED "
NEW ALBUM EXPECT THE BEST OUT VIA CAPTURED TRACKS AUGUST 25
FALL TOUR DATES CONFIRMED
Widowspeak have revealed the second single from forthcoming full-length Expect The Best today. The track premiered at  Stereogum  who note, "the guitars, in all their distorted glory, are the standout here, while distant oohs build an extra level of intrigue to an ominous and downright sleek song." The band's Molly Hamilton told Stereogum"'When I Tried' is about when I was having a hard time starting things, or finishing them, maybe due to my own expectations of what it would turn into or maybe due to me doubting that I'd even be able to make it happen at all... I wasn't sure what the motivation was anymore."  Read the full statement here.
STREAM "WHEN I TRIED"
Widowspeak will release Expect The Best on August 25 on Captured Tracks. In support of the new album, the band will tour the US this fall, beginning in Boston onSeptember 8 at The Great Scott and concluding in Brooklyn at Rough Trade onOctober 13. All dates are listed below.

Expect the Best is the follow up to 2015's All Yours. While previous albums were conceived as a duo with lead guitarist Robert Earl Thomas, the new LP finds Widowspeak playing to the specific strengths of the current touring incarnation (James Jano on drums, Willy Muse on bass). The album, recorded by Kevin MacMahon(SwansReal Estate), exhibits a marked increase in energy that reflects the band's live show and the organic way it was created: by four people in a room together. The band collectively navigate dynamic changes with subtlety and restraint; the nine tracks here reach highs of wide-eyed lushness and plumb the depths of resigned melancholy. Their usual palette of dusty guitars and angular twang are still here front and center, but now with a bit more 90s homage, even if abstractly.
Hamilton says of the album, "In the past I've felt compelled to write songs that are more optimistic than I'm actually feeling, as if I could make it true, as if everything in the past was significant or beautiful in a way, even if it was painful. But the truth is that not everything makes sense, and not every day of your life is an experience of clear cut emotional clarity," says Hamilton. "I struggle with this compulsion to pull away from people, pull away from the things I enjoy doing, and sometimes literally picking up and moving away when I am feeling uneasy and anxious about my future in a given space, physical or mental. Social media these days can exacerbate that as well."
Expect the Best is Widowspeak's heaviest record to date, but never loses the sense of quiet intimacy that they are known for.

YES, Todd Rundgren and Carl Palmer Talk 'Yestival' Ahead Of Tour Launch

YES,TODD RUNDGREN AND CARL PALMERTALK 'YESTIVAL'AHEAD OF TOUR LAUNCHTONIGHT IN GREENSBORO, NC   The YESTIVAL 2017 tour officially kicks off tonight (August 4) in Greensboro, NCfeaturing 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees YES, special guest Todd Rundgren and an opening set from Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy honoring the magic of Keith Emerson and Greg Lake. YES--Steve Howe (guitar since 1970), Alan White (drums since 1972), Geoff Downes (keyboards; first joined in 1980), Jon Davison (vocals since 2011) and Billy Sherwood (guitar/keyboards in the 1990s and the late Chris Squire's choice to take over bass/vocals in 2015), plus touring member Dylan Howe also on drums--will perform at least one song from each of the band's first 10 studio albums starting with 1969's Yes to 1980's Drama, showcasing the storied history of one of the world's most influential, ground-breaking, and respected progressive rock bands. Prior to its launch, the stars of the 31-date North American tour sat down to answer a few questions about what to expect on this summer's outing and more. YESTIVAL 2017 Q&A Progressive rock has continued to defy musical trends and recently gained further momentum via the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoring artists in the genre such as Yes and Rush. Artistically, progressive rock offers musicians the opportunity for the most imaginative musical explorations and fans an unparalleled musical journey. What are your thoughts about this? Geoff Downes/Yes: There has been a school of thought that the Hall of Fame has overlooked British Prog Rock, which should really be defined as classic rock, but there you go.  Now hopefully they will move onto ELP, Moody Blues and other classic bands. Todd Rundgren: "Progressive" means embracing progress so you would assume that the genre is infinitely adaptable. It's no surprise that there are young musicians that are exploring the possibilities of modern music and revitalizing the ethos that the progressive movement represents. Carl Palmer: While I respect the work of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and have a great relationship with the museum in Cleveland, being in it has limited importance for me as an artist. As far as I can see, I was inducted in the real Hall of Fame decades ago and celebrate each day I perform. The real Hall of Fame are the thousands of music lovers and progressive rock fans that come to my shows year in and year out. That's who matters. If someday ELP is inducted it will be an honor, but I am not losing sleep over it until that day...Trust me.  As far as what progressive rock offers musicians, it is really no different in spirit or execution from any other music genre. Good music is good music. It has to do with how the musician interprets and executes the music he or she is playing.  Yes, Todd Rundgren and Carl Palmer all on one bill is a true musical summit. Can you each talk about how you're excited to check out each other's sets? Geoff Downes/Yes: Yes and ELP have pushed boundaries together for many years, a natural fit, and especially this year as we all wish to honor Keith and Greg.  Todd has been at the peak of the American answer to the British prog movement and it is a fascinating mix. Todd Rundgren: It's an embarrassment of riches, both for us and the fans. Any one of the acts could fill an entire evening so figuring out a balance that works is the biggest challenge. I'm pretty sure there will be something for everyone, us included. Carl Palmer: Yes has a special place in my heart. They are all my mates, and in the early days, Yes had its first exposure in America opening for Emerson Lake & Palmer. I have been working with both Geoff Downes and Billy Sherwood in ASIA, so it is already a musical family that weaves itself in and out of each other.  I am looking forward to touring with Todd Rundgren, as well. The work he did with his Utopia project was exceptional and reminded me of some of the best moments of Frank Zappa's music. So, I think the fans will have a wonderful evening of music.  What can fans look forward to in your YESTIVAL set? Geoff Downes/Yes: A track from each of the first 10 albums, sequentially, and a couple of encore staples.  Plus we are raising the bar again with our production.  Last year we were very proud of the "Tales from Topographic" and "Drama" production, and this year Roger Dean has again formed the foundation of our new stage show, which this year reintroduces lasers.  Lasers and Yes are very happy bedfellows. Todd Rundgren: I'm still promoting White Knight, so there will be some of that. We're adding a little bit of Utopia music for those who really want to relive the old days. Whatever we're playing, we like to put on a good show and get people on their feet if we can. Carl Palmer: I have some surprises in mind. We are the opening act, and our set is only 30 minutes, so will need to focus on the shorter, radio hits of ELP; things like "Hoedown" and "Lucky Man."  There will be some music that most fans will not expect to hear. So, as we say: "Welcome back my friends...to the show that never ends..." *** YESTIVAL runs through September 19 stopping throughout the U.S. and Canada. See below for the full list of tour dates. The Preatures Reveal New Single + Official Video For "Yanada." New Album "Girlhood" Out August 11

THE PREATURES SHARE NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO FOR “YANADA”

TRACK AND VIDEO HONORING THE INDIGENOUS HERITAGE OF AUSTRALIA’S SYDNEY REGION

NEW ALBUM ‘GIRLHOOD’ OUT ON AUGUST 11
 PRE-ORDER NOW WATCH
"YANADA"
Download | Stream | VEVO

Today, The Preatures shared their most significant single to date. “Yanada” – which means “moon” in the Indigenous Sydney Australian Dharug language – comes a week before the release their highly anticipated sophomore full-length “Girlhood” along with an official video, also released today. Filmed predominantly underwater, the video was directed by Nik Lachajczak and produced by Alison Page, an award-winning creative at the forefront of contemporary Australian Aboriginal design and storytelling.

Watch the video HERE.

“When you first try to open your eyes in the ocean, it stings and everything seems blurry, but if you persist, your eyes adjust to the saltiness, things start to become clearer and a whole new world begins to open up.” The band’s lead-singer and chief lyricist Isabella Manfredi shares.“Yanada is a song about doing something outside your comfort zone that leads to a discovery of a different world. It’s a song about a connection to the land I call home, Sydney - a mystical place I realized I know very little about - and the role Indigenous language plays in this connection. She continues.

The song is a collaboration between respected Darug songwoman Jacinta Tobin and front-womanIsabella Manfredi. “I am so grateful to Darug woman Jacinta Tobin who shared with me some of her knowledge and helped open my eyes to the importance of our First Peoples' language.”  Isabella says of the special collaboration between the two women for this single.

The video producer Alison Page explained “Yanada is a song about Australia facing the truth of its history, so creating a narrative that sees two best friends, one Aboriginal and one non-Aboriginal exploring a world within the dark depths of a river seemed completely appropriate, and a powerful metaphor for reconciliation.”

Inspired by Sydney Theatre Company’s stirring adaptation of Kate Grenville’s award-winning novel The Secret River, as well as barrangal dyara (skin and bones) a work by Wiradjuri/Kamilaroi installation artist Jonathan Jones – The Preatures stunning new single takes inspiration from the Indigenous heritage of the Sydney region.

I feel like the song chose me. Once we realized the song needed an Indigenous voice, it became our responsibility to understand what that might mean for the community, and to listen.” Izzi says, whose yearning for connection and understanding led the band to work with Jacinta Tobin and The Darug Tribal Council to include the Dharug language.

Co-writer Jacinta Tobin says she “hopes for the song to honor my ancestors and strengthen country and help heal all living things. I would like to thank The Preatures for walking with me, meeting family, hearing hard stories, showing respect, learning and appreciating our shared history as Australians.”

Professor Jakelin TroyDirector of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research at the University of Sydney, whose dictionary ‘The Sydney Language’ provided the main linguistic reference for the b-chorus, praised the collaboration between Tobin and Manfredi: Music is the universal language understood by all people everywhere. The Preatures have created a song that reaches out across Australia and beyond that fuses the universal language of song with the original language of the Sydney region. This music was crafted with Jacinta Tobin, Darug woman and other members of the community and is a very important step in the reawakening of Dharug which is gaining huge momentum.”

The Preatures also worked extensively with Terri Janke, a highly-respected specialist in Indigenous cultural and intellectual property, to understand and follow the protocol for using Indigenous cultural expression.

“This is the first time I have advised an Australian non-Indigenous band on Indigenous cultural protocols for using Indigenous cultural expression. It was good to see that The Preatures not only ticked the box, but embraced the protocols to form strong connections with language speakers and the Aboriginal community. Yanada will promote the importance of Indigenous language but it will also spread the message of consulting with Indigenous people,” explains Janke.

Produced by Lead Guitarist Jack Moffitt, ‘Yanada’ features additional production from acclaimed Australian-Canadian producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, DMA’s), who joined the band in their Doldrums studio in Surry Hills in the early stages of making the record.
Girlhood was mixed by Bob Clearmountain, an industry legend known for his work with David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, INXS, Divinyls, and Crowded House.

We released our new vampy video via TIDAL & are touring with Wild Moon down south for the
**Great American Total Solar Eclipse:: aug 21st**"The duo called Sharkmuffin makes short songs that pack a punch. Tarra Thiessen and Natalie Kirch have now made a short video that has some bite to it. The song is “Factory,” a punky number about a young woman who may be falling for her factory boss. As the video plainly shows, this won’t end well. Especially not for the guy with the Trump-ian hair who tries to take over things at the end. Tarra and Natalie are seriously good musicians, but they’re also clearly having fun, and their intertitles for this putative silent film are a riot." - WNYC"Earlier this year, [Sharkmuffin] put out phenomenal full-length LP “Tsuki”; the record veers through searing rock and roll tunes to more mellow tracks with an underlying darkness....Over the course of a century, they have gained more rights and ownership of the factory, meeting with Trump in the present day as he tries to take it over. Without much negotiation, they completely devour him." - Audiofemme Sharkmuffin - 'Factory' ((official video)) Where's My Mimosa TOUR DATES
