“—and when Alissa said “come in,” Ritter did not peek his head in and furtively open the door. He swung the door open and with confidence, as a flasher would gleefully swing open a trench coat.”

That quote was about the surgeon who would not be smiling like the guy on the book cover.

“Alissa found him violently handsome.” - What does that sentence even mean? That marked the end of my reading.

Just a brief comment. Amos is my absolute favorite in this book.

Emrael is an idiot and deaths could have been avoided if he weren’t. I mean, who leaves an enemy alive who is actively trying to murder you and your loved ones?

Drakeford shouldn’t be allowed to use the word ‘infusori’ more than a handful of times in any book he writes. It’s overkill.

I’m listening to this on Audible. So far not impressed and the voice acting is terrible.

An ordinary and relatively weak human can claw into an orc when military weapons can't. 12 May is both 11 and 5 days away from the end. This is where I am now and it needs to seriously get better.

Also, there's a gate in the town next to mine. What town is Eric in and what's next to it? They don't have to be real towns but that's such a tiny part of world building that I don't know how it gets missed.

This book is not at all what I expected. It's created tension, hope and fear all at the same time. I don't remember how long ago I got this book, because I have so many unread, so I went into this thinking it was just an m/m romance. It's so much more than that and that is not a complaint.

Should I be getting used to the fact that Somerset is a coward? "It'll look bad if I fire this guy." How about "The entire department won't respect me because I let it go."
Coward, and it's getting real annoying.

It's taken a mysterious secret world and turned it into a walk down the road where anyone can go. Why bother making something portrayed as special and then immediately make it commonplace? I just don't get it.

I haven't finished the book, which I think I got free. I love it so much that I went out to buy it. Costs $20 because it's print to order but I think it's money well spent. I've never done anything of the sort. That should tell you how much I love this book. I feel like I know Sydney and James. Such great stuff.

Not sure where I'm at in the book but it makes me want to revise and previous five star reviews. These guys in this are so well fleshed out. I feel like they're real people.

On the fence here. Premise begins with tool company saying "Hey, we want a gay guy who does what you do. Can you find one for me?" Who does that?

Can't even comprehend what John-Henry is doing. I'm usually on his side. But this? It's a huge slap Hazard's face. Not only is it incredibly hurtful but Somers refuses to explain why he's really doing this thing.

I know it's early in the book but if I were Somers I'd be tempted to throw that engagement ring back in Hazard's face. After the visitor gave the "which one of us do you think he'll believe" and then the doubt in Hazard's eyes. That's a serious lack of trust. Don't know how you realistically move forward from that.

I'm only 6% in but there was something I previously forgot. I don't like Cravens at all. She's dirty. There had to be a detailed account of what happened at Windsor. All the connections to the mayor would have been in there, even if there were no accusation . There's at least a possibility that he was involved in the attempted murder of her best detectives. She is ignoring it or complicit. Either way she's unfit.

So far I'm not a fan. LotR ripoff aside, the writing is terrible. Sometimes the words coming out of a character's mouth (which is rare enough given that the book is almost entirely narration) make no sense. Freed tries to use Old English but the sentences are nonsensical. The random bios of characters and even fleeting thoughts of non-characters serve to pad out a bad story. It will be work to finish this book.

I don't have much to go on so far but the Game of Thrones reference was unwelcome. It's going to insure this book quickly gets dated.

I'm really enjoying this book. I trudge through plenty of books but not this one. Interesting aliens who I'm slowly learning bits and pieces about. A long history of the universe that is unfolding. Lots of mystery. It feels like a real world and things haven't even really ramped up yet!

I've finished the first story, Haze, and really enjoyed it. I felt like I got a complete story about the main character, where he came from, how he got into his current situation and where he's going from there. This setting was interesting, as was the technology. I'd love more but I feel like the bulk of Keir Roget's story is done. More in this vein would be good.

Daniel is reading Beyond the Wall, Books One and Two (Beyond the Wall, #1-2)
I liked book one but I'm really having trouble with book two. I don't have the sense of them belonging in the same universe. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's jarring to read it with that in mind. Have to take a break before getting into book two.
