i have come to the conclusion that this book is just poorly edited and there should have been more rounds of revision. i feel like it would fix the problem of a never-ending beginning and haphazard structure🧐

i don't understand what this book wants from itself. i don't understand what it's trying to be. there are a lot of words but there is so little emotion and feeling in them. the scenes that are meant to be insightful and bring the reader closer to the world completely miss the mark (Alex thinking abt how people look in Yale vs. LA? what was that about?) and lack any depth. it's just? not what i expected at all so far.

wow i have finally started it wow !!
so far the only fleshed out character is the Yale University itself and its secret societies and i am not sure how i feel about that

from now on, i shall only refer to civilisation as "organized misery"

it is Delightful how much the word "gay" is used to mean "jolly" in this book i am Thriving

it's really interesting and insightful and deep in many ways, but the humor is what makes it great. i really think it's a good rewrite of Beowulf, different perspective but same feel to it !!!

i must admit up until this crime-and-punishment-esque moment in the book it was a solid 2 star, but now certain things have happened and i will leave this monster with a new fucked up fictional pair of characters to care for. both sob stories with hilarious dynamic and so much potential. for that, well, i should say thank you

hi, today on "i am a Russian speaker and i dont understand what Donna Tartt is trying to say with her use of Russian words" i present to you: Major. if you wanted to say "major" in Russian, it'd be pronounced as "mayor", not "mazhor". the latter is a derogatory term for a very rich/posh person which is what Grisha probably means. i like to think Theo was given a wrong translation and confused on purpose but jsyk idk

im like, angry that Boris is a politicized loud Slav who swears in Russian and speaks with a Dostoyevsky-like vibe which is a huge fucking stereotype. but i also recognize that i fit all of the above stereotypes as well, which makes me think that maybe all Slavs are, indeed, loud, politicized and mysterious ancient souls. what the Fuck

Boris is described as an exotic thing to gawk at, and i don't like it, which, i guess, corresponds with the way all other nonwhite (/nonamerican) characters are written. apparently Tartt writes satire, but i must be too thick to tackle the ghostlike veils of it. or maybe it's just, idk, bad satire. idk.

i Know it makes sense for this book to be filled with strong female characters since its sole purpose was to praise Queen Elizabeth but i am still delighted with how many women i am now in love with. this is definitely Beowulf but for girls, i personally am having a better time reading this anyway!!!!!

i was promised a boring and hard-to-get-through narrative but what i got is literally a GIRL BEOWULF. LIS👏🏻TEN👏🏻. it *is* fairly gard to get through at times but it has rhyme and rhythm and it's about a GIRL KNIGHT. looking for he LOVER. and it's EPIC and EROTIC and im LOSING MY MIND!!!!
