mom doesn't talk to daughters, dad doesn't talk to mom, the sisters don't talk to each other, don't ask their dad questions, don't say a thing of importance. i love culture represented, but even something that is super close to my own experience here feels bleak and confusing, what with polish/russian words thrown around every three sentences. this is going nowhereeeee

what do you think of the characters?, you ask me. and i stare stupidly at you, and i say, i do not know. they are going somewhere. things are, i guess, happening. i found out a now-dead character used 4 shampoos at a time, but i have no emotional connection to any person in this book, and i don't hate it bc there's nothing to hate just as there ain't a thing to love. i do not know.

like i dont hate it but. its like. fuck. its trying so hard to be a classic, a deep and dark and psychological story, but. it's not? it's all about what's on the outside, just the "i went there and i saw this", and no depth. idk im CONFUSION

how many smart pulitzer prize-giving people would eat me alive if i said the writing style is all too much while not nearly enough? like, there is a lot, but it's still somehow surface-level. not one of those books with a soul. yikes.
