absolutely hilarious. exquisite. there is no plot to speak of yet: i am constantly introduced to new characters and their backstories and outfits and letters – but GOD how funny. amazing.

not a fan of reading fantasy lore in form of myths instad of the actual, you know, Fantasy Narrative For Which I Came Here. i get inserting relevant passages from supposed sacred books of the secondary world before each chapter, but if i wanted to read myths, i'd just, you know, read my classic myths homework😶

if i am understanding the blurb correctly, this is 19th century russian dark academia. this is dostoyevsky. this is nihilism. i think i have just found my new all-time favourite book and i have not even read a single word in it

my 13 year old self thought lord Henry was the wisest man on earth, in truth he is incredibly annoying. HOWEVER i must say that "whenever a man does a thoroughly stupid thing, it is always from the noblest motives" is one of his best lines and i approve

those are not "mixed emotions", those are cliches that authors write in every mediocre YA book to describe mixed emotions. the build-up to this was also meh. meh.

yo this should have had more rounds of editing, straight up at least the third time i'm seeing words repeating on one page (ex: "pale like they were made from porcelain" – 2 LINES later "looked like they were made of clay of porcelain"). rlly annoying. throws me off & distracts immensely

i have decided to compare all existing editions to the 1818 one and note changes on the margins. as of right now, i've read three pages in an hour. i am "playing 5D chess while everyone else is busy with checkers"(c)

not to be Too loud but one of my first drafts starts with the mc living on the market near the palace with an old woman and a girl he kind of gets along with but not really. i abandoned it a while ago but seeing THIS just NOW is making my heart pound, i am literally living the dream right now

i am determined to finish this before bed tonight but i'm disappointed ngl. maybe i should blame a certain fantasy streak that hit me recently for not enjoying realistic fiction, and maybe the timing is wrong, but i'm profoundly unimpressed
