the amount of mansplaining..... is just one small little thing in the long list of things in this book that make me understand why this is one of my dad's favourite books😳😶

this book was assigned in january, and i have been reading it for 17 years. tonight i finally realized that this is Not In Fact A Frankenstein Retelling, Like Not At All. which is, i guess, not a bad thing in itself, but extremely infuriating in the context of a fucking Frankenstein-centered university course. why the fuck do i even bother asking questions about this particular course at this point haha

"What was there, as a mere matter of fact, in you that I could influence? You brain? It was undeveloped. Your imagination? It was dead. Your heart? It was not yet born." i am typing out an angry and perplexed email to my prof as we SPEAK, was Douglas really that terrible i just want to know i just cannot DEAL with this

cue my bitter laugh at the fact that Queensberry was so obsessed with the idea of both his sons being gay that in one case he ended up forcing the Prince of Wales to interfere, and destroying Wilde's whole career in another

also as a follow-up: i hate how some american boomers write. i don't know what you're referencing half the time because i didn't grow up back there back then, couldn't care less about certain details of american history. this is a reader's companion that is meant to explain the context and the significance of the play to me, yet it only further complicates everything. boo

Lady Windermere's Fan: hilarious, 10/10. sir Wilde sure promotes self-plagiarism but you know what? he is allowed, since that makes my essay-writing business so damn easy.
