this series is a rare example of movie adaptation being like 10 times better than source material on literally like every single front. i forget these books the day after i reread them cause the plot doesn't make any goddamn sense but the movies are tattooed on my eyeballs for life

amazes me how the first few pages of this book are the golden standard of stupidity. Thomas's tattoo remains one of the worst-worded things in the entire history of YA writing and i love that so much

it is somehow extremely joyous for me to find two lines of an athenian hymn for freedom/national anthem that i wrote my research paper on quoted in this book. somehow im delighted at this even though it makes complete sense to come up in a historical fiction book about 1st cent. AD Rome

yeah so i just can't stop reading it i can't put this down so like apparently the only romance novels im capable of enjoying are of this kind (1st cent. AD Rome, the spread of Christianity in the times of Nero, with violence, philosophical mediations on faith, love, and afterlife) plsss the YEARNING :0

2. i'm actually reading the collector's edition of tmr & tst, but each book starts with page 1, so it'll be a paun in the ass to try and mark page progress in that goodreads edition cause i can't add up numbers. ok let's proceed

this book feels like the seconds before you cry. i can't explain it but i imagine this is kinda like what coleridge also channeled in his weird poems and what the romantics call the sublime. good night

ah a smart protagonist who has been waiting for an adventure to come find him and so he catches on fast and goes with the flow and doesnt ask many questions cause it makes sense to him as it does to the reader. is this a perfect fucking book or what

losing my mind over the prophecy saying the best of myrmidons will die soon which should be achilles but is not cause he's supposed to be alive when that happens and then like two chapters later achilles telling patroclus he's a better man than him. just. really am thinking about this you know

the way patroclus speaks of their deaths as a given (which it is) is just so raw. i love it. as a writer myself and an avid reader and classics scholar i appreciate this on so so many levels.

but i also absolutely hate and cannot bear it because i am a soft bitch. goddamnit

"Why should I kill him? He's done nothing to me." is exactly the kind of line that i read the Iliad and the Odyssey for. as in. like. yes, it hits even without context. but when said context is at hand it just absolutely fuckinv obliterates you and i hate that Madeline Miller knew exactly what she was doing

you know how homeric epics open with a whole literal summary of the entire plotline recited by either the gods or the bard? reading this book is like joining the greek pantheon and gaining instant knowledge of the future and then proceeding to silently watch the foolish mortals hopelessly toil their years away. it feels like you're sisyphus and you're watching the rock roll down the hill. it feels like hell
