It's official I can sail a schooner again

I've started this series before but only made it up to book five (only because I wasn't able to find more in any thrift store) so this time I am going all in...

This is exactly what I crave in non fiction, a comprehensive smorgasbord of key concepts and the people who worked to bring them about. That way I can sample my way down the line and come back to anything I found particularly tantalizing for further eating-er, reading of course

I definitely wish I hadn't seen the movie before reading the book, because while still enjoyable, Kubrick's vision is just too embedded in my mind to create anything of my own especially since it's a very faithful adaptation.

quite a bit of a mixed bag here with cyber punk, steam punk, cronenberg punk, surreal punk, existential dread punk, dying world punk....

Despite a peculiar writing style that takes one a little to warm up to, this story about a young girl taken into a foreign clan is an enjoyable page turner. It's the usual fish out of water framework that helps us, the reader also familiarize this fantastic yet immediately recognizable world, but it is so flush with details that it's hard not to like. In a strange way it reminds me of The Book of the New Sun series

I think the odd, abstract yet beautiful writing is what is keeping me in this one...kind of like a more straightforward Virginia Woolf

this book is capital D depraved and I think I love it

There is something incredibly life affirming about a book that ties together philosophies in such a stimulating matter such as this. I lack a strong background in most of the philosophers being mentioned but Sloterdijk manages to convey the most salient points while still offering up the deeper cuts for those interested

Seems pretty deese so far, a lot of thought provoking ideas presented in an understandable way

I started reading this last night at about 2 in the morning and read for an hour before going to sleep. I woke up at about 7 and haven't put it down until now.

Very cool stories so far here. The first story is about a dimension jumping assassin on a mission to eliminate a threat that warps reality around her. The next two are connected with time travel, the first being what would happen to free will if everyone was being sent a "journal" from themselves from the future. The next concerns a couple toying with the idea of making a genetically perfect child. Very smart stuff

wooo HARD SCIFI

Way too much of Willeford catching up the reader into Hoke's world. A lot has happened but this much exposition is boooooring

I'm not entirely sure what this is, but I am digging it

Once again a completely different vibe from the first two books, this time Hoke has had enough and is planning on retiring early from the force but will a self proclaimed sociopath's crime spree bring him back?

Maybe it smacks too much of my low brow lower middle class taste but there is something about Willeford that keeps drawing me back to his work just to see what he'll say or do next. This is the 2nd book in the Hoke Moseley series and I am excited to get into it

really evocative storytelling as usual, Mr. Sebald really is a modern master

Seems to me Sebald is on the upswing in popularity with readers and after having enjoyed The Rings of Saturn in all of it's decaying splendor, I am eager to read more of his work.

Ah a little less obscure work for Mr. Barthelme, but still nonetheless his trademark style is strewn about like Xmas lights on an otherwise dumpy Xmas tree. It's a little surreal and a lot insightful

While a lot of the beginning is kind of a refresher for anyone who has taken an introductory biology class it's now starting to evolve into a deeper look into what it must be like for octopi who seemingly developed their own form of consciousness...

I do appreciate the comedy that comes from having a fantastical world and making it a rather boring place and I also appreciate the philosophical opportunities this provides. There is just this milquetoast vibe about this that won't leave me alone.

Finally dipping my toes into this and yeah it's Hitchiker's Guide with magic instead of aliens so far

Are you sayin' to me that one of Willeford's unrepentant, smug and violent protagonist is going to be the antagonist, and a down to earth world weary gumshoe is gonna be the protagonist and not some shmuck? I love it, thank you.

this one is an earlier work so it feels a bit moodier, a bit more uptight, but the wackiness and absurdity is all over it..however I feel like he is copying Vonnegutt a bit too much here with the flippant shoulder shrug humor

As a dipsomaniac who has read Under the Volcano, Bukowski, Carver and Amis, none of them are so frank and honest and DREADFULLY accurate of how the mind of an alcoholic works. I am entranced by this odd mirror of words...

Living homicidal houses, Twilight Zone twists, a world's foliage poisoned by Marian diseases; this and more and I experienced as I continue to delve into the nooks and crannies of Ballard fiction
