Reading this on a whim bc I apparently don't have enough light reading on my Kindle. I hated The Time Traveller, but fortunately this is a lot kinder to read - the protagonist is fun and the book wastes almost no time to get into the adventure. The better Jules Verne so far...

Okay this book would have been awesome as a kid, but as an adult I can see the logical faults in the book that I can't ignore. Wouldn't blink twice if someone said this was their favorite book, it was wonferful but not just something I love.

Forget what I said this book is actually really enjoyable once Matilda goes to school.

Got sick so I'm making use of this time to read as many children's books as I can read. So far, this book is more for children than it is a universal appeal but it's entertaining enough. Short read nonetheless

I've got ONE more chapter (long!) to go I ain't a quitter. Was quite lukewarm on this book but the last couple parts that bring home the character drama actually are unique. So, slightly more memorable but still clichéd for the most part.

Will I watch the miniseries though? Who's to say at this point. I don't hate this book, it's just overhyped.

Okay if I don't finish this book by the time I go on vacation I quit this book. I've been distracted with many other things. Just recently I started shadowing and actually on a whim, I started reading Eisenhower's biography to deal with downtime and noise - it was way more enjoyable than this book lol. I swear I'm not a slow reader just impatient with this book that's given me basically nothing.

One more chapter and then I'm just calling it quits with this book lol. About to remove the show from my watchlist too, this is a shojen sports novel where the best parts of scenes are playing chess and the worst part is the human stuff.

I've become less willing to finish books recently huh

Not sure how much I really enjoy this book. The chess scenes are cool but I just feel like this is just really cliched. Will power through to at least 60% of the book but overall - I'm surprised I like the sports scenes more than the character drama.

Chess scenes are actually really lit. Still think the human drama is a little bit dragging because it is really familiar - but surprisingly, everything to do with chess is the highlight of this book. Couldn't care less about chess but seeing Beth wreck everyone with moves I couldn't comprehend reading was surprisingly thrilling.

It's decent so far, but follows a lot of familiar tropes. Didn't treat drug addiction with the severity it really deserves. But it should get interesting soon I hope

Quarter step back bc it deals with that love triangle stuff that I'm tired of seeing, but it is set up for a whole lot more. Starts off really strong and goes really dark, but it doesn't follow up on that with anything strong.

YO. This series is actually great now. This is definitely where the series actually really begins to hit its stride, where I don't even know how the show can improve upon it

DNF. The random commenters were right, this book kinda sucks when you care about no one. I liked the concepts but there after reading so much of it and not being interested in what was happening at all, I just decided to drop it.

Give me strong characters over an interesting plot any day.

Overall a little more focused than the previous volume, but I don't think I'm going to continue with this author's run. Gave it a chance though, just doesn't hit the right notes for me (plus there's a HUGE backlog of what I want to read). Not bad but nothing compelling me to move forward

Ends on an anticlimactic note / cliffhanger and not much happens aside from that mostly unrelated subplot, but the day-to-day life stuff actually serves to develop the characters. Massive improvement even tho there wasn't a big moment

Apparently issue 25 is supposed to be the big one.

Apparently issue 25 is supposed to be the BIG one. So far, no major complaints yet again. Things are picking up and every major character so far has had a moment to shine. It does lean into the coming of age superhero tropes this time around, but it actually executes them in a way that I don't mind it.

Much better. It finally does away with the immature humor without sacrificing the tone, and actually introduces some much needed depth to the characters without shifting the tone of the books entirely.

Also that totally was a Y: The Last Man reference in there. LET'S GO.

Actually really enjoying it now. No existential threat but I think Kirkman is just nailing the day to day superhero antics now so that's it's enjoyable to read this time around.

Wow. Okay so the show does it better but the book really picks up at this point where it's almost as good. I guess I stopped reading here bc I totally would have gone back on what I said. Once 12 comes around, this story actually becomes great and the consequences really follow through as the status quo is shaken up.

Good stuff. Now I want to continue reading.

Frustrating in how much of a downgrade it is from the show. Even dislike it more on a re-read seeing how many big moments are rushed and how minor stuff (like the space fight issue) are given way too much time without much pay-off.

Watch the show instead. It's better.

The way I don't care about any of these characters lol. Everything just sort of happens with some small stakes, but most characters are interchangeable. At least it's kinda interesting but this book really focuses more on its concepts than character

Re-reading this after putting it down due to lack of interest and being blown away by the show. And honestly - the show is still way better. Reading it again, I can't help by unfavorably compare it to how the show improves on it. Can't think of one aspect the book does better than the show. I remember vol 1 being slow but honestly - it feels rushed. Maybe Vol 3 is where it picks up.

Tries to be super edgy and a deconstruction of superheroes by making them terrible people, but forgets to tell a decent story. Everyone in the story is an awful human being and a pervert. I get what he is trying to do but it goes so far to the point it becomes distracting to even read.

And the art is awful.

Ugh

Tries to be crass and edgy for the sake of being edgy; not to say there isn't a point to the book, but it veers way too hard into trying to be a gritty deconstruction. Everyone curses excessively and the art style is crude (as in distractingly bad)

Trying to get through the first two volumes before starting the show just to compare. But so far...yikes

Wanted to start summer off by getting into a new superhero that I heard good things about. So far it's good, nothing groundbreaking but apparently this is the best run. I can see why there is hype but I feel like there is more room to grow in later volumes
