Such an ensamble cast and yet most of them don't stand out to me, it's really hard to identify the killer as it's hard to tell most of the people apart. It's a far cry from ATTWN, where there was atmosphere and each character was unique and fought for survival; here's it's procedural. Maybe the finale will rock my socks

Forgot how procedural these things are. And for some reason, she chose really hard names to remem them by. But despite this, it's still intruiging. Doesn't dress up the mystery with character drama, it's purely asking questions and up to the reader to piece things together. Entertaining.

Not reading this for my book club, just really wanted to read a Poirot story I haven't read yet and just wanted to jump into it. Speed reading to make pace with the club, just wanted to throw in a bonus

Really good book. Didn't reach high highs or low lows, it stayed a very consistent thriller with an insane climax (that does go on for a bit too long).

First time in a while I've had my heart just absolutely pounding from tension, so bittersweet from the dramatic irony. Still in the middle of the climax rn (which imo is a little bit too long and scattershot), but the build up was intense.

Book is really spooky and nothing spooky has happened yet. So far a lot of the intruige comes from the foreshadowing of "Prom Night" from these newspaper clippings that science fails to explain. Really interesting to build up to that this way. Also just find the characters interesting

Trying to read ahead for my primary book club, and I'm actually really surprised as to how well written this is without being flashy. Really builds up to an unnamed event by how off-kiltered everything is. Not bad for a first book.

Contrary to what my updates may indicate, I actually enjoyed the book. I just didn't love it. May read another Kafka book to get my taste.

Opinions unchanged on the book unfortunately. It's fine, definitely slightly above average, but not notable enough for me to enjoy it. The priest scene just went on for way too long for it to have impact.

It is a good book, but man do I wish they broke it up into paragraphs to make this easier to read (might be my translation). But definitely not a bad book, it just strikes me as more academic than entertaining.

So far my opinion hasn't changed; a lot is happening and I have no idea what to think, which is the point, but still. It's a touch improved from when I first read it, but not substantially

Really dropped the ball on this. Loved it at the beginning before it doubled down on the problematic elements like incest and an inappropriate age gap. Also the climax comes out of absolutely nowhere with a new character that takes the torch. Not a bad book, but I probably won't be revisiting it.

Had a reddit post go semi-viral and had large enough demand for a book club (on top of my OTHER book club), so if you're interested in that - check out the subreddit: GuessWhoDunnit where we all read mystery novels without the final chapter.

Alright I could have finished this book like 4 days earlier but I got super sidetracked. Really interesting book though, it is kinda losing me due to how every single woman is one dimensional and it didn't improve on that. But still a great read. Going to binge as much as I can before I leave tomorrow.

As much as I love the book, I have to dock a point on principle for the age disparity of a minor and an adult woman engaging in intercourse, which is statutory rape. It makes sense in context (as in it could be a dream), but describing it in detail is wrong -idk what the legal age of consent in Japan is but it doesn't make it right to read.

Fell off reading for this but coming back, it just reaffirmed what I thought - I am loving this book, so wildly imaginative and unabashedly weird. Some readers may not like how it's so heavy handed and goes on for so long about its symbols and metaphors - but it's done in a way that feels so natural, and feels like the author talking to me via characters about their passions.

So far nothing really happens in this book but it's just the way its written (impressive since it was translated) and the unique perspective of the characters that make this so captivating. I like how it drip feeds you the loose connections between the alternating stories, however loose and bizarre it may seem. BUT the scene with the HJ of a 15 yo did not need to happen.

Really tempted to just give this 5 stars already. After reading a slew of lukewarm to awful books, this book finally just reignited my love for reading. Not much happen but the prose and the way it is written (even if it's translated) makes it so captivating.

Admittedly I rushed reading the ending bc I just wanted this to be over with but this is officially this is the worst book I've read cover to cover. Pure militaristic propaganda that guises itself as pulpy sci fi action that doesn't have any of that. Awful awful book.

Genuinely speaking, this may be a contender for the worst book I've ever read - no positive review is convincing enough for me to see its merits.

Author is unhinged. This book has no first second or third act, it's just a guy going through boot camp and everyone is espousing propaganda. There's literally no reason this should be science fiction aside from the war they are fighting (that only shows up in the first chapter in ONE scene) and the gear they use, plus some history. But this book is stupid.

Hmm a chapter dedicated to deciding if the protagonist should stay in the military and spending the rest of the chapter talking about how great it is to be in the military, saying that those in the military should be the only ones to vote.

Totally normal book.

Okay this book is legit propaganda where entire chapters are just dedicated to political stuff that pushes me to whatever the opposite of what this guy is talking about. Only reason I am pushing through is bc I have to, but this takes too much time on describing technical jargon at the expense of an interesting story. These aren't characters, these are archetypes espousing platitudes and propaganda.

Reading the reviews on this, no one can really agree if it's satire or not but all agree it's at least a good book. On face value, it's actually a good book though, enough to ignore me deciphering if it is a parody or not.

I have absolutely no idea what to expect from this book. Quality? Satire? Action? First chapter tells me this is militaristic propaganda but apparently the movie is a funny satire so this should be interesting

Too much kid logic at the expense of a narrative and a lot of unkind descriptions of Native Americans. Also Peter legit kills children lmao Maybe kids will enjoy it but I didn't find anything worthwhile reading this except for maybe the epilogue.

Sure didn't expect the book to be this politically incorrect. Would drop it but I refuse to be bested by a children's book so I am finishing this no matter what.

But I honestly do not see the appeal. Tbh this book kinda sucks.

LMAO how is this a kid's book Casually talking about how the eponymous character kills children when they reach a certain age like what?

Other than that, the book is getting more interesting but just lacks that world building that I expected. Still early in the book so who's to say

Okay I am nearly 25% in and I don't care about anything. There are no stakes and I thought they would spend some time in different countries so we get a sense of adventure, but it just rushes through it to explain how they get over the next roadblock. Not what I am looking for - way too in the weeds for anything engaging. More power to you if you like it.
