Certainly feeling the pace more than the movie. I feel like this is better as written because a slow paced book is great. A slow paced AUDIOBOOK? Doesn't hit the same. I can tell the writing is pretty good, but like...I'm not very invested

Listening to it on Audible bc 1) I paid money for this on a sale and 2) it's spooky month. I've been told this is one of the few great movie novelizations AND makes improvements. Tall order, but so far it is surprisingly well written.

I did not intend to read this much, but when you commute 40 minutes and then hit a 90 minute traffic jam AND listen to this at 1.7 speed - yeah. Anyways, I know most of this through osmosis, other books, and my undergrad and graduate school years. I will never escape KNOWLEDGE

The epitome of "not for me but willing to listen to this during the drive" kind of vibes here

Listened to this with some apprehension considering that this is the silliest premise - and yes it is, but it's self-aware enough to be fun but also competent enough not to be LOL Random humor. It's good fun, like a cartoon.

Re-reading this really exposes how much sh-t the narrator is full of, there is no way this could be interpreted as a book endorsing his actions by any interpretation, even willfully trying to have the worst interpretation.

Welp, I was wondering how they could possibly make a book from this premise. The answer is that they could, it just renders all of the characters passive and simply just reacting to things rather than enacting change. It's fine, good even. But like there's not a coherent narrative. And the same point of "reality tv audiences dehumanize the contestants" gets repeated a LOT.

Currently reading this on ADHD meds and trying to finish it before Thursday (when I bought tickets for the movie). It is good so far, don't know if I am amazed by anything as of yet

Reading it again and somehow it is more gag-worthy than I remembered. Physically recoiling at the line with the "stomachache" in the park. I like to describe this book as a book that is told from the villain's POV who wants to justify their own actions - the prose is an augmentation of that.

Bill Bryson continues to be the king of books of knowledge that I will never use and may possibly forget. American English is pure doggerel compared to the other romantic languages but also the most versatile and ubiquitous.

I was not aware of how rude Noah Webster was when creating the dictionary and how many things were just flat out ignored when English eovlved. I shall now only be a fan of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Audiobook slaps. Don't care too much about Star Wars. The first act was a bit rough, but once Palpatine gets introduced that is when the book becomes exponentially better as we see his progression.

Noticing some inaccuracies (the 90+ words for "snow" myth), but like it's still an entertaining read to take with a grain of salt. Perfect bed time book to "learn" something while probably forgetting it later on.

Equivalent of a word massage that feels pleasant but comprehension being low. Is it a comedy? Drama? Satire? I don't know. Fascism creeps in and then is used as set dressing for an unrelated conflict in the setting. And yet it works - don't ask me why I am loving this despite not understanding what's going on half the time.

Genuinely have no idea what's going on, but after a certain point I just gave up on following the plot and focused on the sentences - and honestly makes for a much better experience. It's not complicated, but rather less concerned with plot and instead moreso emotion (?). I don't know who is who or who is speaking, but I dig what is being said

It is indeed good. I don't have any strong feelings about the book, especially now that I've hit the halfway point and am understanding a lot more of the context it drops us in media res. The reveal is neat it's just I am not impressed overall.

Pretty entertaining read, but man I am just not a huge fan of xkcd comics in general. I do like the science (and the fact the author worked for NASA is a surprise!), but idk, I'm not as engaged as I want to be

Starts super in media res and asks the reader to piece everything together. It's good, but not my thing entirely since it is so plot/mystery focused. I like the obtuseness, but it's not exactly a character study. (Also reading while on vacation and challenging myself to read over break...let's see if I can do it)

Man this book is actually putting things into perspective. Feel like I am reading it at the right time in my life. Learn to appreciate the world. Really enjoying the second half of the book where it's now talking about his own life more often

That "Plague" essay was really touching. Honestly if I had to recommend ONE essay from this book, it would be this. Amazing work.

It's good. Just have a bit of trouble suspending my disbelief THIS much for a sci-fi book that is trying to tout itself as a machine that is changing the world simply through unconscious thought.

Started listening to this at the gym thinking it would be a fun read considering the premise - but then started to feel so sad knowing that parenting and children are involved (aka my weakness when it comes to this). Doing pushups through the feels :(
