View From Mrs. Thompson's - It was good and describes the mindset after 9/11, but it was neither sentimental or critical. Don't know what the point of this essay was tbh, but maybe that's just me

Finished part one and in the middle of Part Two rn. Very good, Cathy is basically the proto-Anton Chigur. All these characters have depth, but man they really let Charlie off without any reprecussions huh.

Sky high expectations and they are being met. It has amazing prose without being show off-y. And the characters are all interesting. Just awesome

So definitely biased. I see where the author is coming from, but I just do not like how he is vilifying America and all the things they do is just rooted in evil. It doesn't excuse the treatment of the Indigenous People, but it makes no effort to at least make the US not seem awful.

I know this book is slightly controversial for the fact that it is a bit biased - but at least I appreciate the fact it does this up front rather than pretend it is objective. No history book is objective so that's welcome.

Revisiting this with a new perspective as to what this book is trying to go for AND listening to it on audiobook, I am appreciating this more. Just enjoying the similes and witty narration, maybe still bothered by the male gaze. Plot is not too special but that's what pulp is all for

I feel bad for making this my first biography because this is setting such a high bar that I really don't think that any other book can top it. It reads just as well as a dramatic reading of the events.

Listening to Audible so idk what the % is, but damn from the "I Have a Dream" speech to getting to King's internal psychology, the way Eig writes is amazing. It doesn't feel dry at all - it reads like fiction with the prose reflecting genuinely amazing writing. He writes King like he's human, but I respect the man with each chapter - flaws and all.

Damn I got to read more biographies because this is on par with a lot of fiction that I've read. MLK Jr. was a fascinating guy

Yeah this book is not scary. It jumps from 25% to 100% scariness and tries to play with the ambiguity of there being ghosts - but there is no plausible alternative explanation than supernatural. But scary it is not tbh

I'm worried bc the first scary thing in the book isn't exactly...scary. I missed when these characters were just vibing out

I am actually very surprised at how modern the dialogue sounds and actually how funny the book is. For a book with a reputation of being spooky, it's surprisingly chill...at least for now.

The last chapter actually elevates this book into something else entirely - awesome book. Maybe not "The Great American Novel" as many are saying, but it still holds up

Feel like I'm missing out on something because this book is just...okay? The prose is very plain and it relies on dialogue so heavily. There is a wry sense of humor but it's only mildly captivating.

This is definitely living up to the hype. It demystifies MLK Jr's life but also puts it into perspective that he was just a human thrusted into an impossible situation.

So much baseball in this book, much more than I expected. Didn't know what I expected but it sure is a lot of baseball for a book about NYC politics

Only 3 chapters in and I can tell this is going to be amazing. This is my first biography and I am already impressed at how much of a narrative it builds. The prose as well is awesome too.

Teddy - 10/10

Honestly, this is worth reading all the stories for itself. I would never have expected a philosophical conversation between an 11 year old and a college Professor to be this endearing, engaging, and surprisingly profound without it even being pretentious. Somehow Salinger writes an intelligent young man without it being caricature

And that ending good lord.

Awesome story

De Damuier-Smith's...

Surprisingly a funny short story about a guy that is pretentious as hell and his ego destroying him. Unlike any of the other stories here, it is not so steeped in subtext and is pretty blunt with how narcissistic the main character is. It's probably my favorite short story out of all these.

8/10
