Re-reading this again since I just completed Spider-Man on PS4 and really enjoyed it and apparently Dan Slott wrote it. Decided to give this another chance and its influence shows. However the thought bubbles kill me. Especially when he chooses to "tell" instead of "show" to an excessive degree. Going to read up until Superior Spider-Man and see what happens.

Yes it took me months to read a book I could realistically read in a week, but the impact is still the same: awesome book, horrifying memoir, but left me with a sense of hope. Worth the journey.

Yes I'm taking forever to read a book I could reasonably finish in an afternoon and messing up the reading challenge - but this book is still amazingly written. I really like the small hints of symbolism she skillfully weaves into the narrative without distracting from it.

TV People (4/10) - this short story was supposed to be the best but I actually really hated this one (like it may be my least favorite). The concept didn't intruige me and the ending didn't land the impact it wanted. Maybe bc TV is a relic now. This collection does have some peaks and valleys.

Going to finish this book by tomorrow. Returned to it after another hiatus, but once she gets to college - my interest kicked into high gear.

Returning to this book after a long hiatus. I am just reminded how much Dad is an evil, terrible human being that ruined his family's life because of his narcissism. It's heartbreaking to read the damage he's caused.

My eyes may never be the same again after this in one day, but I did it. I prefer the movies more - but I feel like these books are something I could read a lot more again now that I am familiar with the history of the world. Great stuff.

I've reached the epilogue. My eyes are currently drying and screaming in pain. People who say my generation is weak forget a lot of them read the last Harry Potter book in a single sitting. My eyes could barely do it for a <400 page book (albeit with a small font)

I know there are people out there who could read a 800+ page book in a sitting, I don't know how you operate. This was an endurance test even with an audiobook.

As a challenge (and due to time constraints) I am going to marathon the hell out of this book (with an audiobook to keep up the slack). So far, pretty good - I am regretting not using an audiobook earlier as I have the entire trilogy.

Better than Fellowship, but also suffers from pacing issues imo. The backtracking in-between the books really didn't help. Still good, but the movie intercutting the chapters works wonders for the pacing.

Taking a slight detour to reading stuff I'm interested instead of for the podcast; it's a wild memoir, if written a little more plain than I would like. Read a lot of it within a short span of time.

Tom Bombadil is on this a lot more than I thought he would be. Also - not as out of place as I was led to believe. Maybe overstayed his welcome just a bit, but he wasn't a bad character.

I am actually really enjoying how verbose it is, makes for much easier reading actually. A lot of lore is dumped but it breathes life into the world.

3.5/5 rounded to a 3/5. I liked it, especially the ending and the writing style grew on me. But I just didn't find myself relating to the characters as much as I thought I should have. It's good. I see the appeal and I may check out Hemingway's other works now.

Okay hype train is over. The book is good but I also don't feel much towards anything that's going on. However, the prose is the least of my problems, it's just that I feel more omniscient rather than empathetic.

Family Affair - Murakami is so close to writing something heartfelt, but just didn't vibe with this one either. It's his biggest swing at aiming for emotional moments instead of surreal moments, but it isn't executed well. A for effort though

Barn Burning- actually my favorite story, I have no idea what the point of it was but now I'm just anticipating watching the movie now. It feels like there's no ending to it but it feels like I am just missing something.

This short story collection has some of the best and worst Murakami has written.

The Fall... - worst story out of the bunch. Pointless.

Lederhosen - also a story that I struggle to find what the meaning was. Punchline, if it was one, didn't make sense.

Definitely not a great short story collection, but it has its moments.

Video game industry is messed up. But even for something I wasn't necessarily interested it, I found it mildly enjoyable. Perfect gym book.

"Holy crap" levels of amazing. Some of the most emotional I've been reading a play in a while. Beautifully translated and tastefully goes into artful soliloquy without confusing the average reader like Shakespeare would (Hooker translation). That ending :(

Not the most well written book, but it is interesting to listen to while I'm doing menial chores. People straight up do not know how to run video game studios without being mean :(

Can't in good faith so I loved this book, but I can see why someone would. Beautiful prose, but also marred by tangents and a brutally slow pace and excessive southern dialogue that makes it seem more like a play than a novel. Also passive characters (which adds to the themes of the book). So much to love, but unfortunately it doesn't save it entirely for me.
