The writing reminds me of good omens a bit with heaven and hell being ran more as businesses than anything else. I also like stories where death isn’t good or bad, it just is. Very cool introduction to all the characters so far.

The case was good too, I definitely didn’t guess all the parts. And let’s be honest we all love a badass one man army. The ending was a little brutal at parts but still very impressive. Will definitely read more in this series. Another badass to add to the ranks. 4.5

The fact that he was very good at risk assessment was interesting. I also just liked his character, he was a bit weird and quirky, I liked that he just knew a bunch of random stuff both trivia and badass training. I also liked that he wasn’t shot one day and instantly ‘lost’ his fear, but that it was an actual medical thing that was so gradual he didn’t even realise.

I really enjoyed this one! It reminded me a bit of orphan x with a badass hero who’s a bit weird and socially awkward. Ben was an interesting protagonist, I though how they handled his fearlessness was really interesting, I liked that it was honestly more of a hinderance than an advantage most of the time. Because fear is important, it keeps you safe and helps in decision making in life or death situations.

Honestly I feel like these were two people who should be in a relationship, with anyone if I’m honest. They both should take some time to work on themselves first. The ridiculous fight at the end was stupid and Emily took no responsibility for her part in it which was frustrating, but thank goodness it was all instantly fixed with a grand romantic gesture. This book was evidently not for me, which is a bummer.

And she’s constantly calling him a dickhead in her head and shouting at him and then she sees him as a sexy pirate and swoons. Her whole uncle slim uncle slim vibe with ‘captain blackthorn’ and Simon was so fricking weird. It’s still me!! And the miscommunication annoyed me to no end! If these two could just work out how to have a fricking conversation then the book would only be about 60 pages.

Rhiannon recommended this one to me after we went to the medieval fair and I was really excited for a cute romance in that setting, but for some reason I just really didn’t enjoy this one. I didn’t really click with any of the characters if I’m honest. The instant hate Emily has for Simon is weird and my god can she hold a grudge about one minor interaction! Honestly I have no idea why he likes her?

I thought the bond between August and Em was really beautiful. The mystery was pretty good too, the tension of August being back in town with everyone hating him was really interesting. I like the subtle magic elements too, I liked they were more Wicca than straight up magic. The ending maybe felt a little rushed but overall I enjoyed this story.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. The atmosphere and setting was really good and I enjoyed the writing a lot. I liked August and Emery and liked that we got to see both POVs plus some other people in town. Definitely gave me the vibe of a cross between the Dry and A history of wild places, with the mystery in their childhood and the present and the small community cult vibes. They be getting up to shady shit man!

Archer was still cool but I feel like he’s lost a little of what made him different in the first one, now he’s just another PI character. Liberty is the absolute worse and I’m so pissed at the ending between them! Archer playing chicken with a plane was pretty badass though. Some cool moments for sure but definitely not my favourite. 2.5

This book took me a really really long time to finish. And because of that I definitely forgot who most of the characters were when I picked it back up which I think made the twists less impactful cos I just didn’t remember why that’d be shocking. I also feel like the crime just got out of hand the list of crimes must continued to escalate and not single cop was interested in this case?!

Reminds me of a cross between ‘The Dry’ and ‘A History of Wild Places’ so far.
