Zwischen dem 8. Kapitel des zweiten und dem dritten Teil ist ein unnummeriertes Kapitel "Loretto, Höhe 165" eingeschoben. Aber nicht nur formal hat das Buch hier eine Zäsur.

Familie ist Privatsache, was unter uns passiert, das bleibt auch unter uns. ... Diese gewalttätige Stille, die alles Laute, alle Hiebe und alle Schreie in sich trug und gegen ihre Ohrmuscheln drückte.

Das sagt alles über die Deniz häusliche Situation. Sie schafft den Übergang in die Oberstufe nicht, geht geht nach einer Schneise in ihrem Lebenslauf auf die Abendschule, um die Mittlere Reife zu machen.

Deniz türkische Mutter stirb verfrüht. Ihr trinkender Messivater und der fast blinde Opa bieten ihr keinen Halt. Zugleich spürt sie im Gymnasium, dass sie nicht dazugehört und verstummt immer mehr.

"Ernst knows that everything is meaningless and everything is important. Ernst knows that life exists and then no longer. Ernst knows that you do not have to be happy in life, but just live your life, and that is all."

This is the essence of this book.

I am starting to understand: Drach in essence is a family saga set at the borderline between Germany and Poland, but even more at the borderline between German and Polish culture and language. Many dialogues are in "Wasserpolnisch" or śląska gwara, which require knowledge of both languages and a lot of immagination to understand. But this is one of the aspects that attract me.

Deniz ist ein Kellerkind, das Kanacke gerufen wird, obwohl ihr Vater (Bio)Deutscher ist und sie die Sprache ihrer türkischen Mutter nicht spricht. Sie trägt eine tiefgreifende Verunsicherung in sich, die damit zu tun hat dass die Menschen ihren Namen falsch aussprachen ("Denise") und es kein Lesebuch oder Schlüsselanhänger mit ihrem Namen gibt.

This is a collection of the most short stories of the acclaimed author of "The Doll" (Lalka) and "The Pharao" (Faraon), one of the main representatives of positivism in Polish literature.

The first story is "Antek". It is famous, still I have long shied away from reading it. It displays the backwardness and superstition in 19th century countryside in a most drastic way: the killing of a child in an oven for bread.

Ein Mann mit Vokuhila ??? Eine Hundeart ? Eine Krankheit ? Nein, ein Haarschnitt: "VOrne KUrz HInten LAng ! Da war ich offensichtlich in den 80ern modisch nicht auf dem Laufenden.

Das Buch ist eine Wucht. Nicht im übertragenen Sinne, sondern es startet mit starken, schneidend klaren Sätzen. Ich sehe sie sofort vor mit, die Arbeitersiedlung in Frankfurt-Griesheim - wo der Roman spielt. Gegenüber dem Hoechst-Werk auf dem anderen Mainufer.

Rod Schuchart returns to the zone, this time to find the mystic "golden orb", which is said to make wishes come true. With him goes the tenderfoot son of his former co-stalker, Barbridge.

The institute switched to robots doint the research inside the zone. Having lost his job Rob Schuchart is working as Stalker again. He survives unharmed, but the visits left their genetic scars on his child. When Rob is caught after a successful raid the story moves to Richard Nunnan, salesman for electronic equipment - on the outside.

End of first part. Red Schuchart returned from a successful mission to the Zone, but still there are casualties.

I read this book almost 40 years ago in my SF-heavy youth. A reading group motived me to reach out for it again.

With the commencement of the 20th century changes accelerate. Trains shorten to the travel time to Sarajevo from 2 days down to 4 hours, the annexion of Bosnia and the Balkan wars push the border of the Osman empire back to Istambul, newspaper, pupils and students bring new ideas from the big cites. A generation of rebellious angels has grown up. Where will it end? We know it.

After a short break I have return to the Drina. Višegrad enjoys a peaceful live with order, income and security. The inhabitants meet the occupying power with trust and respect. And the representatives of the new power start to blend into the local population. But, national and religious sentiments did not go away. They were only pushed to the background and start fermenting there.

Almost nothing happens in the 8th part in terms of the plot, still for me it the one with the deepest thoughts. Thoughts about the Russian nation, community of Slaws, nature of war and most importantly about the question: "How to live?" Lewin finally finds his personal answer to it and so the story ends with him and Kitty standing on the porch of the countryhouse looking into the evening sky. Beautiful.

Anna put herself to death but having her head cut of my the wheel of a railcar. The read the chapters leading to her suicide like in a whirl of a wild dance. Ravel's Bolero was sounding in my head. What now? What will happen to her children, what to Wronski? How wilth the posterity remember her?

Dolly, her kids and her mother visit Kitty and Lewin and spend enjoyable weeks in the countryside. We accompany Lewin and Stiwa hunting and meet Anna and Wronski as they settle on Wronski's estate. While Wronski arranges himself with his new role and dreams of a regular family life, Anna still lives in limbo, unable to fully move over to Wronski and doubting in his lasting feelings for her.

The Austrian-Hungarian empire is replacing the Ottomans. Fortunately the inhabitants of Višegrad are clever enough to renounce any fracas despite the sedition of a Turkish firebrand. Looking at the generally peaceful, sometime friendly cohabitation of Muslim, Serb and Jewish inhabitants in the book I feel sad this no longer is the case. Today Višegrad is predominantly Serbian.

Kittys und Lewins Hochzeit, ihre schwierigen ersten Monate miteinander und wie sie bei der Pflege von Lewins sterbenden Bruder zueinander finden, liest sich trotz der schrecklichen Umstände wunderbar. Anna und Wronski, hingegen, kehren unerfüllt nach St. Petersburg zurück. Dort steuert die Tragödie aber ihrem nächsten Höhepunkt zu. Anna macht sich in der Gesellschaft unmöglich und geht mit Wronski auf dessen Landgut.

Wisława Szymborska has been and continues to be my favourite of these four. Her mastership and playfulness with language is unique.

The bridge is finalized shortly before Mehmad Pascha is killed in a terrorist attack. It is beautiful and solid and weathers all the floods that regularly afflict the city.

Ich geb's auf. Dies ist nicht mein Buch, weder vom Inhalt, noch von der Art wie er dargereicht wird, noch von der Sprache.

I was told the genre of this book, "nature writing" is hip at the moment. Well, I prefer old fashioned non-fiction or artful description of nature to this kind of fusion. So far, at least.

Ich muss sagen, bislang bin ich enttäuscht. Wirklich Neues habe ich kaum erfahren, und die eigenartige Mischung von Fakten und Flow-of-Conscience sagt mir nicht besonders zu. Mal sehen, ob ich mit dem Buch noch warm werde.

This was tough, I almost discarded the book (and still might do so). Be braced for violence, when you read this.

A reading group finally gets me going at this book, which has rested on my shelves for all too long. It should also be a good round-up to Saša Stanišić's award winning "Herkunft", which is (partly) situated in the same city, Višegrad at the border between Bosnia and Serbia.
